SPLITTING UP? SOCIAL MEDIA

COULD SINK YOUR CASE
Wanting to share whats important to
you with friends and family is only natural.
Email, texting and posting messages or
photos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
and other social media make this easy. But
if youre embroiled in an emotional breakup, be very careful about what you share
your texts and posts could come back to
haunt you.
When going through a separation or
divorce, the first rule of social media is:
Dont email, text or post anything you
dont want a judge to see.
Once emails, texts and posts are out
there, they can be accessed, copied, shared
further and printed. Even a deleted post
can still be retrieved. As well, people you
thought of as reliable confidantes may pass
things on to your ex.
Also, your privacy settings arent
foolproof. They change all the time and
may have unexpected loopholes. And
information you think is private may not
be protected. Courts need to balance your
claims to privacy with the other sides right
to put forward relevant information, which
may trump your privacy claim.
In family law disputes today, much of
the evidence filed in court may consist of
chains of text messages, photos or posts.
These can damage or in some cases even
destroy a case. If you say you cant afford
to pay child support, then texts or photos
of your fancy new car or expensive tropical
vacation wont help.
And when it comes to the critical
issues of parenting time and contact with
your children (custody and access in

divorce cases), social media posts can do
untold harm. Posts sent to your ex out of
frustration and anger can come across
as bullying, threatening or harassing
later. If they amount to psychological or
emotional abuse, they may be treated
as family violence under our family law,
with serious potential consequences a
protection order against you, an order to
get counselling, maybe even an order to
leave the family home. Photos or posts that
show you partying hard, using drugs or
engaging in other risky behaviours can also
hurt your claims for parenting time and
contact with your kids.
Even less dramatic emails, texts or posts
can have negative consequences. They can
show your character to be different than
what youd like the court to believe. And
it can be devastating for your kids to see
negative posts about your ex.
Its normal for emotions to run high
when your family is breaking apart. But
you should express your hurt and outrage
in a more private (even professional)
setting, not in a public forum which can be
seen by everyone, including your ex, their
lawyer and the judge deciding your case.
So when splitting up, take your ex and
their friends and family off your social
media networks. Dont leave your phone
around unlocked for your ex or others to
snoop through. And dont put things on
social media that could anger your spouse
and turn things into a bitter court fight.
Remember, especially if kids are involved,
youll want a civil relationship later.

Celebrates May Day
Precarious employment, discriminatory low wage strategies and lack of regard for safety, are themes the labour
movement has organized around and continues to fight
to achieve progress. Historically, workers gathered, often
illegally, to fight for change; organizing into unions and
forcing governments to change laws and companies to
change practices. Despite some claims that unions are no
longer needed, nothing could be further than the truth.
Child labour that was commonplace in North America
is still prevalent in the global economy. It was swept out
of sight into work ghettos in Asia by international companies that profit from lack of enforceable workers rights
legislation. Society rarely pays attention to the plight of
workers unless there is a terrible disaster, like workers killed in factory fires or trapped in mine explosions.
Labour has several days of remembrance, to honour those
workers who made significant sacrifices to fight for workers rights. One of the most important is May Day.
This year marks the 130 anniversary of the May Day
General Strike, May 1, 1886, by workers in the United
States to fight for the eight hour day. Eight hour day with
no loss of pay, was the rallying cry for hundreds of thousands of American workers who struck, protesting their
exploitation.

Canadian Author To Speak

On Refugee Crisis
One of Canadas most

acclaimed authors says
the country could be
doing a lot more than it
has to help the plight of
refugees here and around
the world.
Lawrence Hill will be
bringing that message to
a pair of lectures sponsored by Selkirk College
later this month. I am
pleased that we are welcoming Syrian refugees,
but we could do more, says the author of The Illegal, a
2015 novel that explores the plight of displaced and stateless persons. We could process Syrian and other refugees
more quickly, so people dont languish and die while waiting to come to Canada. We could also fast-track refugees
from other countries and we should do all in our ability
to integrate refugees well into our society and economy.
Hill says the current crisis is one of the most pressing
humanitarian issues in our world today, and will likely
remain so for years.
Hills first lecture will take place on Wednesday, April
20 at 7 pm in Grand Forks at the USCC Community Centre. As well as in Nelson on Friday, April 22 at 7 pm at
Mary Hall on the Selkirk College Tenth Street Campus.
Besides two speaking engagements, Hill will be holding
a closed, two day workshop for established writers on the
art and business side of being a creative writer.

Detection Of Deadly Bat Disease

On The West Coast
WANTED: Reports of dead bats, bats flying during the

day and information on bat roost sites.
On March 31, the Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife confirmed that White-Nose Syndrome had been
detected on a dead bat near Seattle, Washington. This
is very worrisome for the health of bat populations in
British Columbia. The BC Community Bat Program in
collaboration with BC Government and Wildlife Conservation Society Canada is developing a rapid response to
this emerging crisis.
We knew this deadly fungus that kills bats was moving
westward across North America says Juliet Craig, coordinator of the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP)
and BC Community Bat Program, but we thought we
had many years to prepare.
Currently there are no known treatments for White
Nose Syndrome that can be used to save bats in the wild.
However, mitigating other threats to bat populations and
preserving and restoring bat habitat may provide bat populations the resilience to rebound from the mortality that
may be caused by the disease. This is where the KCBP and
the general public can help.
Although White-Nose Syndrome affects bats in caves,
it will be during springtime when bats return to building
roosts that we have our best chance at detecting the presence of the disease, making the work of our community bat
program more important than ever before continues Craig.
We are asking the public to report dead bats to the toll
free phone number or email below and to also provide
information on bat roosts. Bat carcasses will be submitted
for testing of White-Nose Syndrome and may provide the
earliest indication of the presence of the disease in BC
says Craig. If you find a dead bat, be sure not to touch it
with your bare hands. Collect it in a bag and label the bag
with the date, location and your name, and then put the
bag in the freezer. Contact the KCBP as soon as possible
for shipping directions and further information.
The KCBP also encourages residents to report bat
roosting sites in building structures, such as attics, sheds
and bat houses, to help identify where certain species are
present; if you are needing to evict bats from a structure,
you are encouraged to contact the KCBP who can provide
information on proper procedures to follow.

Receives Donation
A $5000 donation from the Doukhobor Cultural Association will help support students from around the world
enrolled in Selkirk Colleges Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping Program.
Selkirk College, in collaboration with nongovernmental organization Nonviolent Peaceforce, has begun the
program, the first program of its kind offered at a post
secondary institution. It teaches the principles of nonviolence to provide protection to civilians in a variety of
volatile contexts.
There are 15 students enrolled in the program this year,
with eight hailing from the local region and seven coming
to the West Kootenay from around the world.
On April 28 at 6 pm at the Nelson United Church, the
public is welcome to attend a community event to learn
more about the Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping Program, the students experiences and to share in a meal.
The cost is $12.

thrown by unknown person(s), which set off a terrifying
confrontation. The result of the indiscriminate gunfire
from police and others was the wounding of more than
100 people and the death of 11, including seven police.
This is known as the Haymarket Massacre.
Activists were targeted and accused, even though there
was no direct evidence against them. Four were condemned and executed (August Spies, Adolph Fischer,
Albert Parsons and George Engel) becoming known
around the world as the Haymarket Martyrs. Others
imprisoned were pardoned a few years later by the new
governor, who decried the public hysteria, the overt racism against immigrant workers and the general miscarriage of justice. Canada has its own share of working class
heroes, like BCs Ginger Goodwin who organized in Trail
and across the province before he was eventually framed
and murdered.
