Materials and methods

Experiment 1: One stage anaerobic digestion of market waste
Experiment layout
The digester experiments were carried out in four CSTR laboratory-scale glass
reactors, each one with an effective volume of 10 L. The feeding and sampling
were realized through a cap in the top plate of the reactor. Each reactor was
stirred by a continuous stainless steel stirrer, and temperature was not
maintained by external devices.
Operation conditions
The reactors were operated in semi-continuous mode with 1 cycle per day; 22
hours of digestion and 2 hours of decanting, draw off and feeding. Anaerobic
digestion of market waste was investigated with two different OLR, two
reactors operated with 2 and two with 4 g SV/L.d, for constant retention time of
10 days. The HRT were maintained by feeding 1 L of shredded waste and water
and removing 1 L of effluent daily. Steady-state condition is achieved after
three retention times were met.
Experiment 2: Two stage anaerobic digestion of market waste
Experiment layout
Two pilot-scale reactors of different volumes were used. The hydrolysisacidification step was carried out in a stainless steel tank with an effective
volume of 100 L, and methanogenesis step was performed in a stainless steel
tank with an effective volume of 200 L. The reactors were stirred by a suction
pump of 1.1 kW that worked for 5 minutes every 10 minutes. Temperature was
maintained by a thermal resistance in each reactor. Feeding was realized
through the top of the hydrolytic reactor, and sampling was realized through
valves in the bottom of each tank.
Operation conditions
The reactors were operated in semi-continuous mode with 1 cycle per day.
Feeding was done with an OLR of 3 g SV/L.d, an HRT of 3 days for hydrolysis
step and 10 days for methanogenesis step. Temperature was maintained within

the mesophilic range. Retention time was achieved by drawing off 23 L/d and
feeding 23 L/d of a mix of water and 3 kg of shredded market waste.
For both experiments, waste and methods used were the same.
Waste characteristics
The reactor feed was obtained weekly from street markets located near the
plant, and consisted in vegetable and fruits waste. Total solids concentration
was initially 11,2% with a total volatile solids concentration of 15,69%.
Analytical methods
Biogas production, pH, alkalinity and temperature were recorded on a daily
basis. Parameters such as total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), total suspended
solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biogas composition, and VFA
were recorded weekly. For market waste, TS, VS and COD were recorded every
week. Gas composition was measured by gas chromatograph, and TS, VS, COD,
pH, alkalinity and temperature were determinate according to Standard
Methods. Biogas production was measured via volume displacement in
experiment 1, and flow metering in experiment 2.
