evitalization is a word that were hearing more of these days when were
talking about Fresno. But really, what
were talking about is downtown Fresno. The
city has been making great strides in the last
few years to changing the reputation, and also
the physical presence of the area with things
like the Fulton Mall project and others such
as the Create Here Business Plan Competition, to name a few. However, there are more
hands at work to create a better community
than just our city government alone. World
Impact Fresno has been helping to lift up our
urban neighborhoods since 1971.

From tutoring, to food ministries,
opening thrift stores, and even hosting bike
repair events, the organization is doing everything it can to help out. Our single largest
event is our Neighborhood Christmas Event,
inviting families to do crafts together, eat
good food and take family photos together.
We give out food boxes to each family and we
even raffle off Christmas Trees. We have over
100 volunteers who serve 400 to 600 people each year, says Sharon Browatzke, community minister and staff member. The real
work, however, is not just in the act of giving
but also in the principles of teaching. The organization believes that in working directly
with the urban poor and helping to facilitate
the growth of community leaders, it will help
to create a strength in the foundation of these
neighborhoods that will give them the ability
to weather the storm of hardship as they continue to improve.

World Impact was birthed out of the
rubble of the 1965-Watts riots in Los Angeles

when the love of community and the Christian faith combined. Founder, Keith Phillips
made a deal with six boys that he would tell
them about Jesus if they would tell him more
about life in the city. When Phillips returned
a week later, the six boys grew to 25, and in
six weeks time the number grew to 100.

Phillips spoke at the chapel service
at Biola University and told the story of his
new friends in Watts. Three hundred Biola
students joined him in the city. Soon, bus
loads of college students were arriving to not
only teach the bible clubs in Watts, but to
also teach the children that they were integral to the forward and upward motion of the
community, important to those around them
and above all else, loved. Seeing the scope of
what was already being started, it was obvious
to Phillips that there was a significant need
and opportunity to create an urban missions
organization. Now the organization is working to help empower impoverished communities all over the country through education,
outreach, partnerships and the teachings of
the Christian faith.

One of the many notable programs
World Impact is leading is the Incarceration
to Incorporation (I2I) initiative. Compassion and Justice is one of our four focus areas.
Thrift stores, job training, tutoring, and food
ministry all fall under meeting the needs of
those around us. I2I and The Urban Ministry Institute come under our mandate to
Empowering Urban Leaders. We train individuals from the urban community or those
incarcerated to minister to those around
them, Browatzke states. World Impact part-

ners with reentry homes, local churches and

mentors to moves these future leaders toward
success.

If youre reading this and wondering
if there is a way that you can lend a hand,
you absolutely can. Volunteering is open to
the public for those who would like to get
involved. Sonshine Thrift Store, completely
run by volunteers, provides needed household goods and clothing at low prices, and
individuals or families are welcome to come
either sort the inventory or run the front
counter. Work projects are always coming
and going, such as painting, building maintenance, repairs and other skilled jobs that happen on a case-by-case basis as resources allow.
And of course, the special events during the
holidays are something that could always use
a little bit of help.

Right now, World Impact Fresno
is working on a development plan to rehab their ministry building on Broadway St

downtown. This plan includes doubling the

size of Sonshine Thrift Store, bringing their
kitchen up to date and creating 2 emergency
housing studios for trafficking victims. They
are currently looking for donors of funds,
time, skills, and ministry partnership to utilize the building to empower the community
spiritually, physically, emotionally and economically.

Fresno is rich in diversity and home
to many brilliantly talented people, but it
also suffers with areas of extreme poverty.
As the city races to grow in to a reputable
and booming metropolis, we need not forget about those that need a helping hand. To
learn more about how you can get involved
and ways you can help, visit WorldImpact.

Finding
Hope
W

you apply these feelings to future events.

If you have no hope that they will happen
in the future, the joy, happiness, peace and
contentment will not attach themselves to
the event either.

It is very common in my office to
hear people say that they have lost all hope
of ever being healthy again. They remember
a time when their bodies cooperated and
were pain-free. Once their calendars fill up
with doctors appointments and medical
hat do you think is the most
important emotion to possess? tests, however, the level of hope in feeling
healthy again simply plummets. You can

ts not quite summer yet, but with temperatures in the Valley heating up fast, on
comes the frizzies, dry hair, and tresses
that fall flat no matter what. To solve these
problems, you could go spend big bucks for
expensive salon products-or you could use
one of these fast, easy, (and most importantly,
cost-effective) DIYs I have listed here. Most

Hair products as well as hard water deposits

can build up over time and not only affect
the shine of your hair, but the manageability as well. The fix? Once a month do an
ACV rinse. Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple
cider vinegar (ACV) with 8 ounces of water.
Experiment to find a dilution that works best
for you (dry hair likes less ACV and oily hair
prefers more). After shampooing apply the
vinegar rinse. Massage into hair and scalp and
pay special attention to the ends. Let it sit for
a couple minutes. You may then either rinse
it all out, or leave it in your hair. Leaving the
ACV rinse on your hair helps prevent tangles
in longer hair. Since the vinegar restores natural pH it also helps prevent an itchy scalp. No
need to worry about the smell either-it will
completely dissipate once your hair has fully
dried.

big bucks for expensive conditioner? No need:

physical and emotional pain for a reason.

Not all pain is bad when it is temporary.
But without hope, the time limits of
temporary can feel like it stretches on
forever and ever. When pain enters your
life, look for its reason. Sometimes the
reason is obvious a broken bone, the
death of a loved one, etc. Other times,
you might have to put some effort into
uncovering the root cause. Either way,
when pain is temporary then it is probably
not a problem. When the pain takes root,

3. Beautiful beach waves: Want gor-

geous beach waves just in time for summer?

Use a sea salt spray!

You will need:

1 cup of hot water (you may substitute this
with strong Chamomile tea if you want to
lighten hair or with black tea if you want to
darken hair, but if you do this the spray will
need to be kept refrigerated)
1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel
2 tablespoons Epsom salt
teaspoon sea salt

How to mix ingredients:

Pour your hot water (or tea) into a spray
bottle (use one that holds at least 10 ounces).
Add the epsom salt, sea salt, and aloe vera.
Replace the cap and shake the mixture for 1-2
minutes. Spray onto damp hair and scrunch
to create waves. For super pin-straight, hard

and towel dry hair until its damp. Spray the
mixture onto your hair and wrap it into a bun
and leave overnight. In the morning, lightly

4. Flyaways be gone: Those annoying

flyaway hairs-oh how we hate them!! They

are so stubborn and when youre in a rush its
tempting to want to just pull them out. But
no need to go bald while attempting to go flyaway free: simply run a dryer sheet over your
hair to calm the frizzies down a bit. If you still
have a few hairs standing on end grab an old
toothbrush and spritz it with hairspray. Run
this through the top of your hair and it should
be smooth and frizz free!!
So there you have it: a fix to all the most
common causes of bad hair days for not even
a fraction of the cost. Not only will you now
have extra money to buy those cute new shoes
youve had your eye on-watch the savings add
up and you pretty soon you may have enough
to get a whole new wardrobe to go with that
fabulous, fabulous hair you now have thanks
to these tried and true tips. Personally, in
the past Ive tried hair products from both
high and low end brands alike out of sheer
curiosity, cute packaging, or wondering what
the hype is all aboutbut I always find myself
going back to these tips and wondering why
I ever strayed. No need to take my word for
it though-try these out for yourself and I
guarantee that your hair (and your wallet) will
love you for it!

Fun Facts
In honor of Mothers Day

1. In Greek mythology spring festivals were held in honor

of the maternal goddess called, Rhea. She was the wife of
Cronus and was believed to be the mother of many deities.

4. The Mothers Day we celebrate today was started by Anna

Jarvis in the early 1900s. Jarvis got Congress to recognize the
holiday, founded the Mothers Day International Association
and even trademarked the phrase Mothers Day. Jarvis was
inspired by her own mother, who had called for Mothers
Work Days to improve conditions for soldiers on both sides
during the Civil War.

it. Around 1920 she starting urging people to stop buying

world, second to only Christmas and Easter. Other countries
celebrate their own versions of Mothers Day. The UK has
Mothering Sunday, which dates back to the 16th century
and is observed on the fourth Sunday after Lent; Japan has
its celebration of the Empress Kojuns birthday, which has
become just as commercialized as the American Mothers
Day; and Spain and Portugal celebrate on December 8 by
honoring both the Virgin Mary and their own moms.

Chris Millar

rums. No band is truly completely

without the backbone, the driving
heart beat of a steady and excellent
drummer. Rhythm is the existential glue that
holds the entirety of a song together. And in
some cases, even a band.

The drum has been a part of our
culture and not just musical culture, since the
beginning of recorded history. Typically used
as tribal dance instrument, the drum fueled

the ritual celebrations of deities long since

revered. During its evolution, the drum
became an essential military tool to inspire
warriors before and during a raging battle.
The modern drum kit appeared in the late
nineteenth century, with 5 drums to be
played by a single person whereas previously
only one drum could be played by an
individual at any one time.

Its been said that even those who
make the drums their instrument of choice
are an interesting breed. A few years ago I
shared a Victorian house with a writer who
wrote for DRUM! magazine out in the bay
area. Andrew and I had many a conversation
on the topic of the unique quality of
drummers. Drummers are organizers. They
often are the business [person] in bands,
and there is something in the character
of a drummer that is different than other
musicians. Andrew had arrived at this
understanding after interviewing drummers
for many years while writing for the famous
magazine. Likewise, I had also observed
the same characteristics in the drummers I
had either worked with or have known over
the years. It takes a certain unique quality to
become a drummer.

Here in the Central Valley there are
many excellent musicians and just as many
great drummers, but Chris Millar is the senior
master drummer round these parts. Hes a
master of the blues, but often handles rhythm
for country and Jazz as well. Millars style is
sonic, when he plays you feel the absolutely
thick sound of a totally focused drummer

layered with a solid texture of

the blues. His career is one that
is long and distinguished.

Millar founded the
Fresno Blues Festival in 1993
and the festival continued on
for many consecutive years
under the sponsorship of the
Fresno Arts Council. In 2007
Millar and Don Heflin, head
of the Fresno Blues Society,
put together a festival staged
at Woodward Park with Blues
legends, Sonny Rhodes and
Blyther Smith. Millar also
founded Fedora Records and
released albums with the late
Harmonica Slim, Josiah Levy
and Homesick James to name a few. Millar
eventually sold Fedora Records, which is
now based in New York, but his catalogue is
still available in the U.S. and Europe. Many
artists who have been produced under Millars
guiding hand have also toured Europe with
Millars blues band serving as a backing band.

These days Millar teaches drums and
keeps a studio at Bentleys Drum Shop. He can
also be found playing drums for The Richie
Blue Band. If youre looking to see him do his
thing, you can hop on down to the Skyline

Blues and Country jams on Wednesday and

Sunday evenings.

When I think of blues and drumming
excellence in the Central Valley, Millar always
appears on my radar. His contribution to the
blues and music community is unparalleled.
If you get an opportunity to catch Chris
Millar showcasing his craft, I highly suggest
that you dont pass it up. Youll be happy that
you didnt.
