For the seventh consecutive year, Petrobras takes the lead as the
main sponsor of the Anima Mundi Festival and proudly celebrates this
partnership. The realization that with each successive edition the Festival
has gained new dimensions, featured successful attractions, expanded its
audiences, and revealed new talents assures us that we are moving in the
right direction. Petrobras took the daring step of backing an animation
cinema festival which has now gained international recognition. Through
its sponsorship for Anima Mundi, the company has also helped encourage
the creation of a broader space for Brazilian animation, launching new
talents every year.
In this 11th edition, Anima Mundi has a record-breaking 889 projects
enrolled. Of this total, 222 are Brazilian. In 2003, the Animation in
Progress module will present work by novel animators to the public,
thereby demonstrating the Festivals emphasis on the discovery of new
professionals in the field.
As the largest sponsor of Brazilian culture, Petrobras reaffirms its
commitment to supporting this initiative, a highlight on the countrys
calendar of great cultural events.

event in Brazil, has been projecting imagination, magic, and enchantment with renewed

and natural scenes do not necessarily exist, but where everything is possible in this open

Koji Yamamura nasceu no Japo em 1964. Em 1987, formouse na Universidade Zokei em Tquio. Em 1993, fundou a
Yamamura Animation.
Yamamura fez curtas-metragens de animao para crianas,
filmes publicitrios e vdeos com massa de modelar, fotos,
lpis de cor, tinta, etc. Hoje em dia finaliza seus filmes em
computador, mas procura manter sempre neles uma variedade
de processos analgicos.
Os filmes de Yamamura fogem a todas as classificaes da
animao, ainda mais se estamos nos referindo animao
japonesa. So filmes pessoais, sem nenhuma espcie de
padronizao. So filmes feitos com preciosismo, mas no com obsesso. Possuem tcnica refinada, mas sempre a
servio da poesia e da reflexo, s quais o humor se integra naturalmente.
Filmes para crianas? Talvez sim. Yamamura procura a essncia da vida nos pequenos momentos, que a criana sabe
valorizar to bem. De pequenos detalhes e grandes sentimentos os seus personagens criam e vivem situaes que nos
tocam, como quando ramos crianas.
Koji Yamamura recorre ao argentino Borges para ilustrar o livro de Bavel. A uma tradicional histria japonesa,
Atama-Yama, para criar seu Mr. Head, que lhe valeu uma indicao ao Oscar. Ele mistura as referncias adultas
ao sentimento e a percepo infantil, de pequenos e simples momentos. Esta habilidade de fundir to bem o mundo
adulto ao infantil a marca de Yamamura, tanto quanto o seu belo trao e sua crtica poesia.
Koji Yamamura was born in Japan in 1964. He graduated from Tokyos Zokei University in 1987. In 1993, he
founded Yamamura Animation.
Yamamura has made short-length childrens animation films, advertising films, and videos using modeling clay,
photos, colored pencils, paint, etc. He currently edits his films on computer, but he always attempts to include a
variety of analogical processes in them.

Yamamuras films defy all animation classifications, especially where Japanese animation is concerned. His are
personal films that obey no patterns. The films are made precisely, but not obsessively. They contain a refined
technique, but consistently pursue poetry and reflection, where humor naturally joins in.

Janet Perlman, animator and illustrator, was born in Montreal. Her unmistakable style and humor often appear in
productions of the National Film Board of Canada (such as the classic Why Me?).
Besides the NFB, Janet has directed independent short films, commercials and educational productions for
many companies which include Olive Jar Studios, Childrens Television Workshop (Sesame Street), and WGBH
Educational Foundation (PBS).
Her films have won many international awards, including an Academy Award nomination and Best Short Film at
the Berlin Film Festival.
She has taught animation at Harvard University and at the Rhode Island School of Design and has written and
illustrated three books - Penguins Behind Bars, Cinderella Penguin, and The Emperor Penguins New Clothes.
She was creative director of The ShowPeace/AnimaPaix series for the National Film Board. This series of films, on
the subject of conflict resolution, include two directed by Perlman, Dinner For Two and Bully Dance.

Her Montreal-based company, Hulascope Studio, was formed with partner Judith Gruber-Stitzer. The studio has just
completed Penguins Behind Bars, a half-hour television special based on the graphic novel of the same name,
written by Perlman and Derek Lamb.

Phil Mulloy passou 10 anos de sua vida fazendo filmes ao vivo. Ele
havia estudado pintura no Ravensbourne College of Art e ingressado
no Royal College of Arts de Londres para fazer cinema. Teve uma curta
experincia com animao nesta poca, que deve ter ficado firme em seu
subconsciente. Pois um dia, em 1988, resolveu passar para o time dos
amantes do quadro-a-quadro, dos inconformados com a dura realidade.
E a pirou de vez.
A animao de Mulloy saiu rasgada, suja, cida e crtica. Trash,
talvez?... J houve quem o classificasse como o Ed Wood da animao.
Mas, esperem a! Phil Mulloy sabe muito bem o que est fazendo.
Minimalista, usa um trao irregular, recortes bem contrastados, preto no branco, ressaltando a crueza e o humor de
seu texto. Seus personagens, embora uniformizados no trao, mostram diferentes facetas do irracionalismo humano.
Com aspereza e poucas palavras.
O planeta Zog um resumo do universo de Mulloy. Nele vivem seres estranhos que so revelados aos terrestres atravs
de um filme: um documentrio proscrito, um filme ao vivo dentro de um filme de animao. Os Zogs tm a cabea
no lugar. Naquele lugar. Por isso so assunto hilariante para mais dois filmes.
Alis, Mulloy gosta de explorar personagens. Para o Channel Four, criou a srie Cowboys, em que o Velho Oeste
o cenrio da liberao dos mais baixos instintos do homem. O machismo exposto at o absurdo, para provocar a
repulsa. Sexo e violncia so constantemente tratados por Phil, e ele bem sabe que a abstrao do tratamento grfico
e uma pincelada de humor desglamurizam estes temas e estimulam nossa reflexo.
Anima Mundi 2003, com o tradicional apoio do British Council, traz Phil Mulloy e sua esposa e parceira Vera
Neubauer, a qual merece uma sesso especial parte no programa do festival. Para o casal, a animao uma forma
livre e divertida de fazer cinema.
Phil Mulloy spent 10 years of his life making live action films. He had studied painting at the Ravensbourne
College of Art and entered the Royal College of Arts in London to make cinema. He has had a brief experience
with animation at that time that must have remained firmly in his subconscious, since one day in 1988 he
decided to join the world of the frame-by-frame lovers, dissatisfied with harsh reality. And thats when he flipped
out for good.
Mulloys animation came out ragged, dirty, acid, and critical. Trash, perhaps?... Some have dubbed him the
Ed Wood of animation. But wait a second! Phil Mulloy knows very well what hes doing. A minimalist, he uses

an irregular stroke, well contrasted cuts, black and white, highlighting the rawness and humor of his text. His
characters display a uniform stroke, yet different facets of human irrationalism. With harshness and few words.
The planet Zog provides a summary of Mulloys universe, inhabited by weird beings revealed to earthlings through
a film: an outlawed documentary, a live action film inside an animated film. The Zogs have their heads in the
right placeaccording to their own unique anatomy. Thats why they provide the hilarious subject matter for
two more films.
After all, Mulloy enjoys exploring characters. For Channel Four, he created the Cowboys series, in which the Wild
West is the scene for releasing mans crudest instincts. Male chauvinism is exposed to the absurd, to provoke
repulsion. Sex and violence are treated constantly by Phil, and he is well aware that the abstraction of graphic
treatment and a stroke of humor deglamourize these themes and stimulate our reflection.
Anima Mundi 2003, with the traditional support of the British Council, brings Phil Mulloy and his wife and
partner Vera Neubauer, who has a special session of her own in the Festivals program. For this couple, animation
is a free and fun way to make cinema.

one of the oldest and most popular in Europe, the Brussels Cartoon and Animated Film Festival.

At the invitation of Anima Mundi, he is bringing us a special retrospective on animation in Belgium and
Belgian animation tends to be as delicious as Belgian chocolates and Belgian cartoon strips, two of the countrys
specialties.
Graduated in History of Art and Archeology from the Free University of Brussels in 1979, Philippe worked in the
Belgian animation studio Graphoui and has been publishing cartoons in the Belgian weekly press for 20 years.
But his most intense and impassioned work has been research and dgustation in animation. His so-called serious
studies served to please his parents, although this director does not regret the experience. I was always mainly
attracted by satire, humor, slapstick, the grotesque, which did not prevent me from being an admirer of Nicolas de
Stal and the first abstracts, of which I studied the virtually unknown Belgian branch, says Philippe, who goes on
listing preferences. In cartoons, I like everything by Winsor McKay and Im an unconditional fan of Mattoti. I also draw
I even illustrated some childrens books, but I soon realized that there were a lot of people with a lot more talent,
inspiration, and technique than myself. For the festival that I co-direct with Doris Cleven, I had the huge pleasure
of bringing people to Belgium like Peter Lord, Nick Park, Bill Plympton, Youri Norstein, William Kentridge, and even
Tim Burton and John Lasseter. If I do say so myself, even if these last two dont even remember the experience.
Despite acknowledging the disparities between Belgium and Brazil I live in a country occupied successively by
the Romans, Germanics, Spanish, Austrians, French, Dutch, and Germans, a nation about 500 times smaller than
Brazil (I didnt do the math, Im just guessing) and where we speak three official languages, - Philippe Moins
highlights a common identity through animation cinema itself. In my opinion, animation is above all cinema. I
really appreciate animation artists that give movement to their screens, but I believe that animation is also sound,
framing, and editing, and its very important to never forget this, or one runs the risk of making merely decorative
films.

The Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction of Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg
is today one of the main animation centers in the world. The films produced by Filmakademie students
surprise the audience of most international festivals with a level of quality in stories and production rarely
found in many professional films.
At Filmakademie, students can focus on character animation (cg, hand-drawn or puppet animation)
and visual effects (mostly digital effects for feature films, TV and commercials) as well as on content
creation (story development, character design, production design, script writing, recoupment strategies)

and research & development (for future technical directors). Within the Institute, students are provided
with the most up-to-date computer animation systems, motion capture and motion control equipment,
and have access to the Institutes digital finishing and effects editing facilities as well as sound stage,
film and video cameras, lighting equipment, editing suites, and sound and music production tools.
Numerous animated films from Filmakademie students have received prizes at national and international
festivals like Siggraph, Imagina, Berlinale, Stuttgart, Annecy and London Animation and Effects Festival.
This year, the Institute of Animation had a nomination for the 75th Academy Awards in the category best
animated short film: Das Rad , which has also been awarded in Anima Mundi 2002 with the Professional
Jury Prize.

Nascer. Os personagens rechonchudos e debochados so um pouco o seu auto-retrato. A cada festival, ele surgia
com um novo formato. Podrera&Ovni, personagens curtos e grossos para uma srie de TV. Outra pequena srie com
os conselhos do cnico Dr. Galvo, mestre da auto-ajuda, este sim o seu declarado alter-ego. O curta Almas em
Chamas incendiou o festival. E por ltimo veio o infanto-juvenil Extremes, um piloto de seriado mais ambicioso,
feito em grande equipe nos Estdios Mega, coisa ainda indita e pioneira por aqui.
, parece que a srie de TV seria uma grande sada. Arnaldo procura esta sada, experimentando todo formato de
roteiro possvel. E constata que o cinema de animao ainda est para ser descoberto. A publicidade, onde ele
tambm trabalhou com sucesso, no o nico mercado. Existe um rico caminho nos filmes de entretenimento, que
como considera os seus trabalhos. E quem de ns nunca se divertiu com as boas sries de TV? Porque no vemos
todo dia personagens brasileiramente engraados, debochados, sensuais e empticos como os do Arnaldo?
O que anima Arnaldo e ns todos que a produo de animao vem aumentando, e muita gente est abrindo os
caminhos. Existe a sada. Uma sada poltica?. Arnaldo Galvo escava em todas as direes e alarga o tnel em
busca da luz, fazendo os filmes que o pblico brasileiro deseja assistir .
Souls in Flames. Dont let the kids see it. Sex and tragedy, no happy ending could this be a cartoon? It could. It
set off a shock wave and numerous awards at film festivals, making a name for Arnaldo Galvo outside the circuit
of Brazilian animation, where he was already a veteran character and old friend.

Arnaldo is one of those people who has watched and practiced animation ever since he was a kid, and anything that
appears before his eyes in life he can turn into a script and characters. Kids films? He makes them. Commercials?
Yes, sir. TV series? Of course. Educational films? Take your pick. His portfolio is full of well-done projects and others
just waiting for the chance to be made.
Arnaldo has been present since the inaugural edition of Anima Mundi, with two short films: Uma sada poltica
(A Political Solution) and Disque N para Nascer (Dial B for Birth). His chubby, prankish characters are something
of a self-portrait. He shows up at each successive festival with a new format. Like Podrera&Ovni (Rotten&UFO),
short-and-stubby characters for a TV serial. Or another short serial with advice from the cynical Dr. Galvo, a selfhelp guru and Arnaldos self-declared alter-ego. The short film Souls in Flame set the Festival on fire. The latest
production was the kids film Extremes, the pilot for a more ambitious serial made with a large team at Estdios
Mega, an unprecedented project in these parts.
It does in fact appear that TV serials are a good solution. Arnaldo is exploring this route, experimenting with every
possible script format. And he has observed that the potential of animation cinema remains to be discovered
in Brazil. Advertising, where he also works successfully, is not the only market here. There is a rich avenue for
entertainment films, which is how he views his projects. And who among us has never enjoyed a good TV serial? Why
dont we see funny, prankish, sensual, and empathetic Brazilian characters like Arnaldos every day?
What animates Arnaldo and all of us is the fact that animated film production is on the rise, and many people are
blazing the trails. There is a solution. A Political Solution?. Arnaldo Galvo digs in all directions and broadens the
tunnel in search of light, making the films that Brazilians want to watch.

Pixar um nome curioso que hoje todos conhecem muito bem, graas
ao extraordinrio sucesso no cinema de longas-metragens como Toy Story,
Vida de Inseto e Monstros S.A. O cowboy Woody, o astronauta Buzz, o
monstrinho Mike contracenam com outras estrelas nas festas do Oscar, e
isto nos parece bastante natural.
Mas na poca em que John Lasseter, um bem sucedido animador da
equipe da Disney, trocou sua mesa de desenho por um computador, era
difcil acreditar que bits e pixels pudessem criar personagens com tanta
personalidade e empatia.
George Lucas foi um que apostou nesta possibilidade, ao convidar Lasseter
para trabalhar com ele. Era 1984, a computao grfica vivia o auge dos
logotipos voadores e tinha como virtude a limpeza e os movimentos
matematicamente perfeitos. Mas Lasseter queria algo mais. No curta As
aventuras de Andr e Wally B, em que assina a criao dos personagens e a animao, comeou a tomar gosto pela
arte de transformar polgonos em criaturas mais prximas do desenho animado. O resultado chamou a ateno de
Steve Jobs, da Apple, que resolveu comprar de Lucas o seu novo brinquedo. O departamento de computao grfica
da Lucasfilm, com Lasseter includo, mudou de mos e passou a se chamar Pixar.
Lasseter criou ento sua primeira obra-prima, Luxo Jr.. Aplicando com maestria o timing e outras manhas de
animador, ele conseguiu atribuir a duas geomtricas luminrias de mesa as expresses gestuais de uma travessa
criana e sua cuidadosa me. Minimalista, o filme uma diviso de guas na histria da computao grfica, por
sintetizar uma unio de tecnologia e emoo que alargaria os caminhos para a animao de personagens 3D. No
toa que at hoje o pequeno Luxor brinca no logotipo da Pixar que antecede todos os seus longas.
Cada novo curta de Lasseter na Pixar representou um avano estudado, em que o roteiro era genialmente adaptado
s limitaes do desenvolvimento em curso de uma nova tecnologia. Em Reds Dream os personagens ainda so
objetos (monociclos e bicicletas), mas se introduzem desafios de textura como a chuva. Em Tin Toy acontece a
primeira tentativa de modelar seres humanos (um beb que resulta horroroso, mas para o roteiro bom que ele seja
assustador!). Knickknack encontra, num boneco de falsa neve, um timo personagem para testar a animao de
partculas.
A Disney acabou se reunindo a seu ex-funcionrio em 1990, assinando contrato para uma srie de cinco filmes em
que preserva a marca Pixar em sua integridade. Toy Story foi a primeira prova de que a animao 3D tambm
poderia sustentar um longa-metragem, e o reincio de uma histria de muito sucesso (mais uma vez reconfirmada
agora com Finding Nemo).

Todo trabalho feito na Pixar pretexto para um novo salto de qualidade. No importa a durao do filme, pois
comerciais de publicidade tambm so feitos l com o mesmo princpio. A linhagem de curtas, continuada por novos
animadores do estdio, segue a tradio de Lasseter. O pblico de Anima Mundi sabe bem disso, pois aclamou Geris
Game e For the Birds com vrios trofus.
Esta retrospectiva Pixar em Anima Mundi, apresentada pelo animador Doug Sweetland, nos faz perceber o golpe
de gnio da Pixar: descobrir, desde cedo, que a criatividade tem estar na base de toda tecnologia, e no apenas na
superfcie.
Pixar is a curious name that were all now well familiar with, thanks to the extraordinary success of feature-length
animated films like Toy Story, Bugs Life, and Monsters, Inc. Cowboy Woody, astronaut Buzz, and little monster
Mike take the stage side-by-side with other stars at the Academy Awards ceremonies, and we take this totally for
granted.
But when John Lasseter (a highly successful animator on the Disney team) first traded his drawing board for a
computer, it was hard to believe that bits and pixels could create characters with such personality and empathy.
George Lucas was one who wagered on this possibility and invited Lasseter to work with him. It was 1984, and
computer graphics was experiencing the apogee of flying logos, with the virtues of sleek, mathematically perfect
movements. Yet Lasseter wanted more. In the short film The Adventures of Andr and Wally B, bearing his
signature for the character creation and animation, he began to take a liking for the art of turning polygons into
creatures more akin to cartoon characters. The result called the attention of Steve Jobs from Apple, who decided
to purchase Lucas new toy. The computer graphics department at Lucasfilm (with Lasseter included) thus switched
hands and was renamed Pixar.
Lasseter then created his first masterpiece, Luxo Jr.. Masterfully applying the animators timing and other skills,
he managed to instill two geometric lamps with the gestures of a mischievous child and his doting mother. This
minimalist film was a watershed in the history of computer graphics, since it synthesized a fusion of technology and
emotion that would broaden the avenues for animating 3D characters. It is no coincidence that we see little Luxor
playing in the Pixar logo that precedes all his feature films.
Each new short by Lasseter at Pixar meant a precisely studied step forward, in which the script was ingeniously
adapted to the prevailing developmental limitations of a new technology. In Reds Dream the characters are
still objects (unicycles and bicycles), but textural challenges like rain are introduced. Tin Toy witnessed the first
attempt to model human beings (a baby that turned out horrendous, but for the scripts purposes it was fine to be
so terrifying!). The fake snowman in Knick Knack was a great character to test particle animation.
Disney ended up joining forces with its former staff member in 1990, signing a contract for a series of five films
which fully preserve the Pixar trademark. Toy Story was not only the first proof that 3D animation could sustain
a feature-length film, but also the resumption of a highly successful story (reconfirmed again now with Finding
Nemo).

Every project at Pixar is reason for a new quality leap. It doesnt matter how long the film is, since Pixars
commercials are also made according to the same principle. The line of short films carried on by new animators at
the studio follow Lasseters tradition. Anima Mundi viewers are well aware of this, having showered trophies and
accolades on Geris Game and For the Birds.
This Pixar retrospective at Anima Mundi, presented by animator Doug Sweetland, helps us appreciate Pixars stroke
of genius: having discovered, early on, that creativity must be at the base of all technology, and not only on the
surface.

dia ser uma modalidade olmpica? Talvez no mas, de qualquer jeito, alguma coisa McDull ter aprendido com

McDull, a little pig like millions of others, lives in Hong Kongs maze with his mother, Mrs McBing, a woman
with a strong temper who loves her pig more than anything else. She dreams of a good British education and
a corresponding social life for him. And it seems that, in order to gain those, they need to master the art of
bun snatching a trendy sport in the ancient territories. Will it become an Olympic discipline? It is unlikely but

Vera Neubauer nasceu e iniciou seus estudos de arte em Praga. Passou por
Dusseldorf, Stuttgart e chegou a Londres, para se formar em cinema no Royal
College of Arts, num tempo em que ainda no havia o curso de animao. Ela
descobriu por si mesma o gosto pela inveno quadro-a-quadro. A falta de
instrutores lhe deu a liberdade de encontrar o seu prprio caminho entre o cinema
ao vivo e a animao. Vera no queria trabalhar com comerciais ou se concentrar
em apenas um aspecto de produo, e a animao lhe permitia a liberdade de
experimentar.
Apesar de preferir um modo mais livre e anrquico de trabalhar, ela realizou sries
para crianas e trabalhos encomendados.
Alm de dirigir seus filmes, Vera Neubauer hoje ensina animao no prprio RCA e em outras escolas de Londres.
Vera Neubauer was born in Prague, where she began her art studies. She spent time in Dsseldorf and
Stuttgart before arriving in London, where she graduated in cinema from the Royal College of Arts, at a time
when there were still no animation department. She discovered her taste for frame-by-frame invention on her
own. The lack of instructors gave her the freedom to set her own path between live cinema and animation. Vera
preferred not to work with commercials or concentrate on one single aspect of production, and animation gave
her the freedom to experiment.
Even though she preferred a freer and more anarchic work approach, she made both childrens series and
specifically commissioned projects.
Besides directing her own films, Vera Neubauer now teaches animation at the RCA itself as well as other
schools in London.

Cinma dAnimation (CICA) and the AFCA (Association Franaise du Cinma dAnimation). The films are

Este ano com o co-patrocnio da TELEMAR, mais uma vez acontece o grande espao interativo do festival no Rio
de Janeiro, no qual o pblico realiza seus prprios filmes de animao com materiais diversos, equipamentos de
vdeo quadro-a-quadro, e a ajuda de instrutores.
So seis oficinas, com seis maneiras diferentes de dar vida imaginao:
Zootrpio - antigo brinquedo do sculo XIX. Os participantes fazem 16 desenhos e os colocam no zootrpio. Ao
girar o tambor, criada a iluso do movimento.
Animao na Pelcula os desenhos so feitos com canetas especiais sobre pelcula transparente 35mm, que
logo aps projetada numa Moviola, equipamento profissional para edio e visualizao de filmes.
Desenho Animado a tcnica mais conhecida de animao. Os desenhos de uma cena so feitos em mesas de
luz, um sobre o outro, usando papis furados sobre pinos de registro. Os desenhos so ento gravados quadroa-quadro com o equipamento de vdeo.
Massinha Pequenos grupos de participantes se organizam para criar roteiros e personagens. Estes so
modelados e animados na hora com o vdeo quadro-a-quadro.
Pixilation Este nome esquisito para a animao de pessoas de carne e osso, como se fossem bonecos! Os
participantes se fantasiam e criam historias e movimentos absurdos que eles mesmo executam, fazendo poses
quadro-a-quadro.
Areia Uma tcnica simples de resultados surpreendentes: Uma camada de areia colocada sobre uma mesa
iluminada por baixo. O vdeo quadro-a-quadro registra a transformao dos suaves desenhos feitos com dedos,
pincis ou outros instrumentos sobre a areia, num jogo de formas em claro-escuro.

This year co-sponsored by TELEMAR, the main interactive feature takes place at the festival in Rio de Janeiro.
The Open Studio is a space where the audience creates their own animated films with a variety of materials,
video equipment and the help of instructors.
There you will find six different ways to bring life to your imagination:
Zoetrope a 19th Century toy. The participants create 16 drawings and put them inside the zoetrope. As the
wheel turns, the illusion of movement is achieved.
Direct on Film drawings are made with special pens on transparent 35mm film, which is projected right away
in a Moviola, the professional equipment for viewing and editing films.
Cartoon the most popular animation technique. The drawings for each scene are done over under-lit tables,
one after another, using punched paper and special registration pegs. The drawings are then recorded frameby-frame with the video equipment.
Clay Small groups of participants are organized to create scripts and characters. Those are then modeled in
plasticine and recorded instantly in stop-motion using the frame-by-frame video.
Pixilation This weird name stands for the animation done with real people, as if they were puppets! The
participants dress up in funny disguises and create absurd stories and movements which they perform
themselves, making still poses recorded frame-by-frame.
Sand A simple technique that produces amazing results: a layer of sand is laid over an under-lit table.
The frame-by-frame video records the subtle drawings made on the sand with the use of fingers, brushes or
whatever tools a game of shapes made out of shade and light.

Once again Anima Mundi is providing Brazilian professionals with the opportunity to exchange experiences with animators
from the worlds top studios. This time its PIXAR, with Doug Sweetland sharing a few of his secrets.
Doug is one of the most consecrated character animators at PIXAR Studios. In 1994 he was hired for Toy Story, and since
then he has participated in all the studios feature-length films. He was animator for Bugs Life and Toy Story 2 and
animation director for Monsters Inc.. He received two Annie awards for his work in these last two films. Doug animated for
the new Finding Nemo and also did storyboards for the film The Incredibles, directed by Brad Bird (of Iron Giant), to be
released in 2004.
The workshop Doug is presenting at Anima Mundi 2003 is called AN ANIMATORS THOUGHTS ON MEANINGFUL
PERFORMANCES, and during two days of meetings in Rio and So Paulo he will be sharing his nine years of experience at
PIXAR, focusing on the importance of performance in animation.

Despite the lure of new technologies, what satisfies an audience about a performance has little to do with the medium used.
Attendants will be looking at examples from many media - music, dance, pantomime, screen acting and animation - to see
why some performances are enchanting and some are not.

Judith Gruber-Stitzer, nascida em Nova Iorque, vive e trabalha em Montreal como compositora
para filmes h 20 anos. Seu trabalho abrange msica para filmes ao vivo (de diretores como
Robert Altman), performances de dana contempornea e peas de teatro.
A maioria das trilhas sonoras de Gruber-Stitzer foi composta para documentrios e filmes de
animao produzidos pelo National Film Board of Canad, para o qual musicou mais de 60 filmes
desde 1986. O mais notvel o curta When the day breaks, dirigido por Wendy Tilby e Amanda
Forbis, que ganhou a Palma de Ouro em Cannes e uma indicao ao Oscar alm de vrios outros
prmios.
Nesta apresentao Judith falar de seu processo criativo e nos contar segredos sobre como
preparar a trilha musical de um filme de animao.
Music and Animation
Judith Gruber-Stitzer, born in New York City, has lived and worked in Montreal as a film
composer for the past 20 years. Her work has included music for live action films (by directors
such as Robert Altman), contemporary dance performances as well as theatre.
Most of Gruber-Stitzers soundtracks have been composed for documentaries and animated
films produced by the National Film Board of Canada. She has scored over 60 films for the NFB
since 1986. Most notable among these films is the animated short When the Day Breaks,
directed by Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis which has won le palme dor at Cannes, an Oscar
nomination as well as numerous other major awards.
In this presentation, Judith will talk about her creative process and tell us some hints on how
to make a soundtrack for an animated film.

Animao (ABCA), Anima Mundi reserva um espao especial para os profissionais da animao brasileira.
Os diretores, produtores e animadores se reuniro com personalidades de destaque de empresas, governo e
instituies, para discutir as possibilidades que podem se abrir para a indstria e o mercado de animao no
Brasil. Sero dois encontros pblicos:
Animao e Sociedade - Insero da Animao em polticas culturais, projetos educativos e iniciativas
pblicas.
Animao e Mercado - Oportunidades possveis e prementes de absoro e integrao da Animao Brasileira
ao mercado cultural, de entretenimento, comunicao e licenciamento de produtos.
Animation is an increasingly important issue for all of Brazilian society. The growth and maturity of our
animated film production, highlighting its presence in each successive edition of Anima Mundi, has
spawned a debate that needs to be intensified both inside and outside the Festival.
In this Brazil Forum, organized jointly with the recently founded Brazilian Association of Animation Cinema
(ABCA), Anima Mundi has reserved a special space for Brazilian animation professionals. Directors,
producers, and animators will meet with outstanding personalities from companies, government, and
institutions to discuss the prospects for the animation industry and market in Brazil. There will be two
public meetings:
Animation and Society Participation of Animation in cultural policies, educational projects, and public
initiatives.
Animation and the Market Possible and pressing opportunities for the assimilation and integration of
Brazilian Animation into the cultural, entertainment, communications, and product licensing markets.
