PRACTICE INSIGHTS:

Assess for cardiovascular reactions, especially signs and symptoms of MI.


Check for rash and itching.
Give first dose under close supervision if patient has coronary artery disease or
other risk factors.
Don't give within 24 hours of another 5-HT1-receptor agonist or ergotaminecontaining or ergot-type drug.

DOSE
ADULT:
Migraine

2.5 mg PO at onset; may repeat once after 2 hr

Maximum dose 7.5 mg/day

MODE OF ACTION: It causes vasoconstriction and reduces inflammation associated


with antidronic neuronal transmission associated with relief of migraine
ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS:
1-10%

Chest pain

Dizziness,dyspepsia,fatigue,flushing,headache,hot or cold sensation,myocardial


infarction and coronary artery vasospasm in patients with cad risk
factors ,nausea,paresthesia,skeletal pain,somnolence,xerostomia

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
CONTRAINDICATIONS & WARNINGS:

Contraindicated in
o Hypersensitivity
o

Severe hepatic or renal impairment

o Migraine prophylaxis
o Ischemic heart disease,
o Uncontrolled HTN,
o Hemiplegic or basilar migraines
o

Cluster headache,

o Cerebrovascular syndromes
o Peripheral vascular disease
o Do not use within 24 hr of another 5-HT1 agonist or ergot derivative,
or within 2 weeks of maois
Risk of
o Overuse of acute migraine drugs (eg, ergotamine, triptans, opioids, or
combination of these drugs for 10 days/month) may lead to exacerbation of
headache
Use caution in
o Hypercholesterolemia
o Hypertension
o Cigarette smoking
o Obesity
o Diabetes,mellitus
o Strong family history
o Menopausal women or men >40 yr
DIETARY & GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Instruct patient to take one tablet with plenty of fluids at first symptom of migrai
ne.
Tell patient he may take second tablet 2 hours after first if migraine returns.
Instruct patient to administer frovatriptan as soon as symptoms appear, but it m
ay be administered any time duringan attack. If migraine symptoms return, a se
cond dose may be used. Allow at least 2 hr between doses, and do notuse more
than 3 tablets in any 24-hr period.

Advise patient that lying down in a darkened room following frovatriptan admini
stration may
further help relieveheadache.
Advise patient to avoid alcohol, which aggravates headaches, during frovatripta
n use.

MONITORING PARAMETERS:

Monitor:
o BP
o ECG
o Lipid profile
o RFT
