What is causing Donald Trumps rise to political stardom? Annotated Bibliography
Inquiry Question: What is causing Donald Trumps rise to political stardom?

Comment [AP1]: Great inquiry here.

Proposed Thesis: Donald Trumps profound rise to political stardom has lead many to attempt to
uncover the reasoning.

Comment [AP2]: This isnt an argument. This is a super

obvious axiom. I need you to search for an argument. I feel
like you could, perhaps, see if there are other instances in
American history where something similar (or analogous
enough) may have happened.

Donald Trump Presidential Campaign, 2016." Https://ballotpedia.org. Ballotpedia, n.d. Web. 29

Jan. 2016. <https://ballotpedia.org Donald_Trump_presidential_campaign,_2016>.

Ballotpedias article presents the facts on trump and his political stance on most
political issues within the United States. Ballotpedia does this by compiling different statements
and political values of Trump thus compiling his complete perspective on these issues. Using this
article allows voters to get a complete picture of Trumps political ideals. Overall, the online
piece discusses that Trump is a Christian pro-life candidate. His political campaign is centered
upon his motto Make America Great Again. Trump has lived behind this motto for the entirety

Comment [AP3]: How does it come to that conclusion?

Im not sure about this source. I dont think it is able to
parse through the complex social/political/rhetorical
situations.

of his campaign, used as a rallying cry for supporters. This is one of the primary reasons for
Donald Trumps success within the polls, because of the belief of many people that America has
been dethroned as the greatest country in the World.

Comment [AP4]: Youre going to have to do a little

better than this. Every candidate has some kind of motto
that talks about America and greatness and plans for the
future. But why is this working? What does it indicate?
These questions need to be answered before you can simply
declare his motto one of the primary reasons. Also, it
might be important to note that his motto is a slight
appropriation of Ronal Regans campaign motto.

Micheal Scherer uses his real life experience and interactions with Trump in order to
identify Trumps tactics and political values. The major piece of evidence that Scherer uses in
support of his conclusions are from his recollection of a Trump rally. Scherer also references an
interview that he conducted with Trump as a perspective Time's man of the year candidate.
Scherer in this article is explaining the aspects of Trumps rise but primarily the reasoning for his
consideration of the Time's man of the year award. However, much of the article Scherer uses
author bias presenting Trump as an unlikely presidential candidate and an unlikely man of the
year candidate.

2016.<http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/three-theories-of-donald-trumps-rise/>.

Three Theories of Donald Trump Rise is suggesting that there are three possibilities
for the rise of Trump within the 2016 presidential race. Silvers suggest that Trumps rise comes
due to a political revolt in American citizens, a nationwide transition into republican ideals, or
that his major popularity comes from the media bubble constantly surrounding him. By limiting
the possibilities and only looking at it from a select point of views, Silvers is restricting other
possible reasons for Trumps success. Three Theories of Donald Trump Rise is attempting to
uncover the primary reason for Trumps success within the presidential race. By doing this, they

Comment [AP5]: How is this bias? Dont conflate having

an opinion with bias. Does he give specific reasons? I think
this article is great in terms of showing the attitudes a
particular class of people had toward Trump and how wrong
they were about his possible success. I would like to read
more of your commentary and why you think this article is
important to your research.

are trying to convey to the readers that there is a false security within Trumps success thus
causing complacent and uninformed voting by the American population.

Comment [AP6]: This is a really interesting source here.

I like that is offers three different theories. Which, if any, of
these do you espouse?

"Republican Presidential Field: The Known And The Unknown." Rhodes Cook Letter 12.2
(2011): 11-13. Academic Search Complete. Web. 29 Feb. 2016.

"Republican Presidential Field: The Known And The Unknown discusses the GOP
presidential field of the 2011 election. Republican Presidential Field: The Known and The
Unknown shows the same increase that has been reflected in the 2016 GOP presidential race
with Donald Trumps voters. The article references Donald Trumps increase from 1 percent to 16
percent of the vote within the matter of one month. The obscure thing about this is that Trump
never officially declared himself for president in the 2012 election. This leads to the idea that
Trump strategically chooses 2016 to run for the presidency because of the increasingly extreme
beliefs and distrust of Americans of political leaders, including Barack Obama.

"Secular Immortality and The American Ideology of Affluence gives the foundation for
Trumps behavior within the private sector. "Secular Immortality and The American Ideology of
Affluence discusses the successes and the wealth that Trump has accumulated over his time in
business. Hirschman focuses on the entitled and the rich within the article discussing the secular
benefits of wealth and business. Not only does Hirschman mention Trump in this article but also

Comment [AP7]: Do you mean that he predicted the

growing frustration people would have with the political
system four years ago? If so, can you make this claim
beyond speculation?
Comment [AP8]: This seems needless to say that Obama
is extremist here. The subject is on Trump, and to make the
claim that Obama is an extremist seems like the topic of a
separate paper. Youll have to prove that point first. You
could, though, make a point about Obamas approval rating
(which gallup puts it at about 51% right now), which isnt
terrible while congresss is much worse (which is something
like 13%), right? My only point is when you make a claim,
you then take on the burden of proving that claim (unless of
course you are writing to people who already buy into the
claim). Be mindful of the ethos you are willing to reveal
(think about kairos) and how that influences the rhetoric of
your argument.

discusses other large economic players such as Mr. Forbes. "Secular Immortality and The
American Ideology of Affluence allows me to get in-depth insight into Trump and the people
that were like him.

Dochuk, Darren. "The Fissuring Of The Republican Party." New Labor Forum (Sage
Publications Inc.) 25.1 (2016): 26-33. Academic Search Complete. Web. 29 Feb. 2016.

The Fissuring Of The Republican Party presents the Republican party as selfdestructing. It describes Trump increasing to the top of the polls as the Trump phenomenon.
The Fissuring Of The Republican Party suggests that the cause of this is that the Republican
party is lacking in philosophical depth. Not having philosophical depth is causing an uproar
within the political party and is reflected a lack of control of the political candidates and their
voters. Dochuk quotes Daniel Rodgers saying, All Americans have lost the capacity to
conceptualize. Overall, this journal provides a synopsis of the fall of the Republican party and
the effects Trump has had on the collapse.
Spencer,
I think you have a really terrific topic here. You do a good job presenting this research and
summarizing the sources in your annotations. Im still struggling with the specific direction of
your research and/or what it is that you want to say. Im left with the so what? So Donald
Trump has risen greatly in popularity. So what? What does it indicate? Why should we care?
There is an implication that we should, but Im not seeing why we should. We live in a
democracy, right? So what does it matter, the people with choose their candidate. If there is
something problematic about Trump, are you suggesting there is something problematic about
democracy? Think through this line of thinking and come up with an argument for your paper.
This may be the crux of your research, and you dont want to hinge a research paper on
speculation (speculation with respect to why he is winning as he says). Really looking forward
to seeing how this develops.
