Timing
Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:
Always fit a new timing belt after removal
Check the tensioner and idler pulleys; renew if necessary
Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation
Inspect the belt(s) for cracks, fraying, wear and oil contamination
Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment
Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction

General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal,

Removal
Raise the vehicle,
Disconnect the battery earth cable,
Remove the engine upper cover,
Remove the air-inlet hose from the turbocharger,
Remove the dipstick tube,
Remove the air filter housing,

Timing
Remove the timing belt cover,

Remove the right front wheel,

Remove the right inner-wing splash guard,
Remove the right wheel arch liner,
Remove the reinforcement brace,

Remove the reinforcement brace, pic

Lock the ancillary drive belt tensioner,
Fit the locking pin, 5 mm
Remove the ancillary drive belt,

Timing
Remove the crankshaft pulley,

Remove the engine lower cover,

Place the jack under the engine sump,
Remove the right hand engine support,

Timing
Remove the engine support bracket,

Loosen the tensioner pulley nut,

Remove the timing belt,

Installation
Remove the blanking plug,
Fit the camshaft locking pin, 1.870.896.900

Note: Fit only the exhaust side locking pin as the inlet side can only be accessed by removing the
camshaft housing,
Loosen the camshaft gearwheel,

Timing
Note: Use a wrench to counter-hold, 1.870.815.000 / 1.870.836.000

Fit the timing belt onto the crankshaft gearwheel

Remove the bolt,

Fit the stud

Timing
Fit the crankshaft locking tool, 2.000.003.000

Fit the timing belt

Align the timing marks on the timing belt with the marks on the gearwheels,
Press the tab to turn the tensioner to maximum tension,
Use a screwdriver at the arrow, A

Tighten the tensioner pulley nut, 23 - 28 Nm

Tighten the camshaft gearwheel, 29 - 32 Nm + 40

Timing
Note: Use a wrench to counter-hold, 1.870.815.000 / 1.870.836.000

Remove the crankshaft locking tool, 2.000.003.000

Remove the camshaft locking pin, 1.870.896.900
Rotate the engine 2 rotations by hand,
Loosen the tensioner pulley nut,
Align the marks on the tensioner,
Use a screwdriver,

Tighten the tensioner pulley nut, 23 - 28 Nm

Fit the crankshaft locking tool,
Check that the camshaft locking pin can be fitted,
Repeat the procedure if required,
Remove the camshaft locking pin,
Remove the crankshaft locking tool,
Refit the bolt,

Timing
Fit the engine support bracket,

Renew the idler pulley,

Fit the idler pulley,

Fit the right engine support,

Remove the jack,

Fit the engine lower cover,
Fit the crankshaft pulley, 23 - 28 Nm

Fit the ancillary drive belt,

Refit the reinforcement brace,

Refit the cover inside the right wheel arch,

Refit the right inner-wing splash guard,
Refit the right front wheel, 108 - 132 Nm

Fit the timing belt cover,

Refit the dipstick tube,

Refit the air filter with the inlet hose,
Refit the upper engine cover,
Reconnect the battery earth cable

Torque settings
Camshaft gearwheel:, 30 Nm + 40
Tensioner:, 23 - 28 Nm
Reinforcement brace:, 80 8 Nm
