Objective To teach English in South Korea.

Summary  I was a tutor for Northside public library in Lexington, KY. During my 12 months there, I
would prepare assignments and help students with reading, English, and mathematics. I even
had the opportunity to teach Spanish –speaking children how to read and write.
 I studied abroad in Dijon, France my spring 2007 semester. I attended an International
Business School and my classes were extremely diverse. While there, I led presentations
together with people from around the world. This helped me understand how to effectively
communicate with people who speak English as a second or even third language.
 I travelled to Tokyo, Japan this spring and was able to connect with the Japanese culture by
being reverent, respectful, curious, and open. I have found you can never be to outgoing to
people. This mentality has helped me maintain close relations with people from all over the
world and I hope I can soon say the same for South Korea.

Writing Section Please answer the following questions.

1. Please explain why you are the right type of person to teach overseas.
I am passionate and excited about the opportunity to teach abroad. My personality and life
experiences have set me up for this amazing adventure. I realize this is an invaluable experience
and one to cherish. My hope is to teach students how to speak articulately and effectively, giving
them the all the ingredients for success. In addition, I’m very good at teaching kids and my tutoring
experience supports this claim. I have also lived abroad before in France, so I feel confident with the
transition that lies ahead.
2. Please explain what qualities you think are necessary to be a good teacher.
The ability to listen and understand your students. If you understand them, they will understand
you. A teacher must have patience and realize students learn at different rates. Last but not least,
the ability to reach out and engage students by a strong candor of leadership and character.

3. Please describe how you would deal with a workplace dispute with another co-worker or supervisor.
I would calmly describe the situation to a third-party hoping this would mediate the situation. In
addition, I would try to understand the disputer’s point of view and apologize for the
misunderstanding. To conclude the scuffle, I would offer an invitation to a local restaurant where
the feelings of ill-will could be swept beneath the rug wiping the slate clean.

4. Please describe some actions you could take if you began feeling homesick or lonely while in Korea.
Talk about my feelings with the friends I’ve made and realize it is natural to feel this way at times.

5. Do you have any other plans for your time in Korea? (Further study, hobbies to pursue, places to
visit?)
I plan on keeping a journal of my trip for a future memoir. I would like to continue with music. I
plan on traveling to Japan and where else is to be determined. I also would like to document my
journeys on film and make a video blog about teaching English abroad.
