CLASSROOM PLACEMENT

@ CENTRAL PRIMARY SCHOOL

April 2016

Placing your child is an incredibly important task for the School. Assigning 550-580 students into 26 or 27
learning groups across K-3 grades is a complex process. Our aim is always the same: putting all students and
teachers in a position to achieve maximum student learning, growth, and development during the school
year.
The placement of Kindergarteners and new students is a little more challenging. These students are very much
an unknown. The Kindergarten pre-registration learning screens are used in conjunction with constructive
parent information about their child to place our incoming Kindergarteners (and new students). 1st through 3rd
grade students are more of a known commodity to us because we have worked with them in the
classroom/school setting. As it relates to learning for themselves and others, we feel that we understand our
students strengths and opportunities for growth specifically as they relate to the Primary School learning
environment. With that said, parent input for all grade-levels is acknowledged and considered by teams of
teachers and the principal when planning for the next school year. The District has worked diligently to recruit,
hire, and support a roster of outstanding teachers and staff. While teachers may vary in subtle ways (i.e.
personality), each teacher is a dedicated, skilled professional working within the same collaborative program of
curriculum and instruction. Parents are encouraged to offer child-specific observations that will help us make
their childs placement the best fit for all of our students (i.e. personality traits, relevant medical issues,
unique observations or history, conditions that have been conducive to success, etc.). Parent contributions to
the placement process (anything submitted to teachers and the principal) are shared with our placement
planning teams as we carefully evaluate groupings for next year. During the months of February and March, a
preliminary set of class groupings was set at the 1st 3rd grade levels using the fall-to-winter learning measures
and teacher observations. Our pre-registered Kindergarteners will be organized into an initial set of class
groupings by the end of next week (April 29). With the exception of Kindergarten, multiple grade-level teams
and various resource staff members collaborate to consider current learning and developmental factors to
arrive at a balanced set of student groupings. The placement teams will meet on one or two more occasions
this school year to review our spring learning measures and make final considerations for student groupings --including any information shared by parents (to either a teacher or the principal). The pre-summer groupings do
not change much (if at all) ---- so that advance knowledge of students can be evaluated and related planning for
their learning started. Finalizing teaching assignments and the organization of students into classes are
planning activities that truly impact the fall and our ability to hit the ground running. Every effort is made to
complete these tasks prior to the summer break. *I will continue to ask our teachers to keep the planned
student groupings confidential as they are subject to possible adjustments at registration (late July/early
August). A release of final class placements via Skyward typically occurs no later than one week prior to the
start of the school year.
