Discuss Challenges and Opportunities of Commercial Drones

Assignment of Research Project Parts
As a group, we discussed our strengths and weaknesses for researching specific project topics
and divided the project points as follows:
Emily decided to research historical information of drones and how they have been used in the
past, present, and future.
Joe decided to research legal issues of the commercial usage of drones.
Michael decided to research the programing of GPS functions and how drones work together.
Juan decided to research how drones are used for emergency aid.
Jabal decided to research commercial delivery using drones.
Initial research
Emily researched general information to get a better understanding of drones before beginning
research for the historical overview. Research for historical information of drones turned out to
be very difficult, but she did find one ebook about how drones were used in the past for military
purposes. With this, she elaborated on how drones were developed over the years for specific
military purposes.
Joe found there was much information that was able to be viewed in regards to the legal issues
surrounding drones. Some high profile issues involved are surveillance and privacy regulations.
Operators of drones flying them too close in proximity to privately and commercially owned
property have been pushed to the forefront of legality discussions. Drones gathering pictures
and videos without consent of targeted individuals has also been a pivotal catalyst in the
ongoing surveillance and privacy issues.
Michael did not find much available on programming of drones. Most of what is available for
challenges is legal issues and privacy issues. Others areas of research would be better suited
for this time period in drones technological development. Mechanical issues may be a good
topic to investigate.
Juan was unable to find any small business applications on emergency aid as most use of
drones in emergency aid are implemented in a larger scale operation. Upon research more
current opportunities and applications on the use of drones in data research, data monitoring,
and surveillance where drones are applied.
Jabal researched into the application of using drones in businesses, where he mentioned
commercial drone delivery, precision farming and photogrammetry. He mentioned almost every

big retail is looking or researching into drones. He also mentions, the drones have already made
their mark into precision farming and there is a lot of secondary research already taken place.
Announcement and Adjournment
As a group, we decided that each member should continue to research their individual topics.
We also decided on a communication platform and a collaboration platform; Google Hangouts
and Google Drive.
