This is essentially a 3-hour course, transcripted as follows:

Class Participation Grade

I believe strongly in the classroom as a social learning environment. I expect you to be
physically and mentally present during our scheduled meetings, to be engaged, and to
participate fully in class discussions, group work, and workshops. This class is an
opportunity to improve your writing and speaking skills through interaction with your peers,
lectures, and guided practice, and your focused presence is required.
I expect you to show up to class on time, in your seat, and ready to go. Arriving late will
impact your class participation grade.
Please be very careful with respect to laptops and other electronic devices. I realize that
many of you like to use your laptop to take notes, as well as occasionally surf the web for
information that might bear on the discussion at hand. However, we all know how easy it is
to inadvertently check out with these devices (checking email, surfing, looking at
materials for your other classes, etc.). Also, students sitting near you tend to be distracted
by your screen. Again, be very careful, as a lack of presence will hurt your class
participation grade.

I do not count your specific in-class comments and questions, or otherwise track your
participation in a statistical manner. Rather, I remain tuned in and connected to my
students. I stay fully engaged, and although I tend to give the benefit of the doubt, I pretty
much know when you are with us and when you are not fully engaged.
