Wh-questions

Usamos preguntas indirectas cuando pedimos

ayuda en la calle a un extrao, ya que tienen la
cualidad de ser muy educadas.
Para comenzar una Indirect question
comienza la frase con 'could you tell me' o 'do
you know'

Ejemplo
A: Excuse me. Could you tell me where the
nearest station is?
B: Certainly. It's along that road on the right.
A: Thank you very much for your help.

Las preguntas indirectas son una manera de

ser corts.
Son muy comunes en ingls, especialmente
cuando se est hablando con alguien a quien
no se conoce.

Indirect question

Can you tell me why he was late for the meeting?

Wish
Primero hemos de aclarar que las expresiones

' I wish to'

-> I wish to see the manager

'I want to'

-> I want to see the manager

Pueden tener el mismo significado; pero es mucho ms

formal la expresin I Wish to y por lo tanto menos
frecuente o menos comn.

Tambin puede usarse 'wish' con un nombre o

pronombre para ofrecer buenos deseos ( offer good
wishes ).
I wish you all the best in your new job.
We wish you a merry Christmas

I wish you to Ana all the best in her marriage.

Nota que cuando deseas ofrecer un buenos deseos

usando un verbo, debes usar la palabra 'hope ' y no
'wish'.
We wish you the best of luck.
We hope you have the best of luck.
I wish you a safe and pleasant journey.
I hope you have a safe and pleasant journey.

Sin embargo, el principal uso de 'wish' es para decir

que nos gustara que las cosas fueran diferentes de
como son, que tenemos remordimientos sobre la
situacin actual.
I wish I was rich.
He wishes he lived in Paris.

Observa que el tiempo del verbo que sigue a 'Wish'

est ms en el pasado que el tiempo
correspondiente a su significado.

I'm too fat. I wish I was thin.

I never get invited to parties. I wish I got invited to
parties.
It's raining. I wish it wasn't raining.
I went to see the latest Star Wars film. I wish I hadn't
gone.

Present condition.

En Ingls ms formal, se utiliza la forma

subjuntiva 'were' y no 'was' despus de 'wish'.

I wish I were taller.

I wish it were Saturday today.

I wish he were here.
