A national survey is conducted to look at todays teenagers life style, social awareness and

their health and academic performance. You are part of a local team that is involved in the
survey study. The team has identified 5 local high schools for the survey, using geographical
location and social-economical indices.
The survey is conducted during school time, by using a self-completing questionnaire and a
routine health check procedure. Some of the questions in the questionnaire were about their
daily life; some others were about their awareness of and attitudes towards the society, for
example, how much they trust authorities and media. You have been given the task to carry
out the survey in Mayfield High School. You need to target 10% of the schools population
for the survey; the school has given you authorised access to its pupil database after you have
been given ethical approval and an all clear by CRB.
At the end of your survey in Mayfield High School, you are asked to report to the team of the
schools results, before your sample is pooled into the local data for further analyses.
Task
Use appropriate statistical tests to answer the following questions:
Does the level of trust in teenagers differ for the police and the TV?
Is there any difference in the number of hours of TV watched between male teenagers and
female teenagers?
Is there a relationship between IQ and teenagers scores on their Key Stage Two exams?
Is there a relationship between BMI and weight?
Do teenagers favourite sport differ for different age groups, in particular are older (> 14) or
younger teenagers (<14) more likely to choose a team sport over a single player sport?

Marking criteria

Answer the research question given

What are your hypotheses? When you state you null hypothesis, what does the significant
value mean? If significance value above 0.05 are you rejecting or failing to reject the null
hypothesis?
Firstly describe your data. Is it meeting the parametric assumptions? i.e. the number of hours
spent watching TV is interval or ordinal data. Interval data can be used in parametric tests but
only if it is normally distributed and has no extreme scores The histogram indicates,
consistent with this the tests of normality
What test of normality have you used and why? Kolmogorov-Smirnov or Shapiro-Wilk?
What test should you use? which test was used...does this test use mean average or the
median? Report the results of the test (examples have been given each week), are they
significant or non-significant? What does this mean in terms of rejecting or failing to reject
the null hypothesis? What do the results mean?
For example, there is a difference in mean average (or median depending on what test you
used) of scores on the tinnitus questionnaire between those who received treatment and those
who did not, with scores for those who received treatment on average significantly lower than
those who did not. Therefore the tinnitus severity was lower for patient receiving treatment.
