Pastor: Fr. Max Biltz

This coming Thursday, May 5, the Church observes the great Feast of the Ascension of Our
Lord into Heaven. In many dioceses of the world, it remains a Holy Day of Obligation. Other
dioceses observe the date as an Easter Weekday and transfer the solemnity to the following
Sunday, May 8. The Easter season is coming to a close and Jesus spent 40 days on earth after His
Resurrection. Some believe that His stay on earth for so long was to make certain that sufficient
people knew of the Resurrection. That truth had to be solidly established, for ALL of the other
truths of Our Holy Faith depend on it! Jesus said He was going to prepare a place for us and
also to present Himself to His heavenly Father in our behalf. Can you imagine Our Lord doing
this, presenting His wounds to the Father and saying: This much I have loved them, do Thou
deal mercifully with them.
His Ascension was necessary, however, so we could receive His Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The
Risen Christ, in the act of leaving the world and returning to heaven, commanded His disciples:
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you. I am with you always, until the end of the world. Every follower of Christ
must show Christ within him. Each of us must be another Christ. Our thoughts, words, and
deeds must be that of Christ. It is a large obligation for He meant that we should REPLACE him
on earth so that by our own goodness, we might bring graceless people and sinners to God.
That is our primary obligation. When we give bad example or live a life contrary to Christs
teachingsthis will be our most deplorable condemnation.
Jesus, at His Ascension, also told the disciples, I go to prepare a place for you You can
understand why this feast takes on considerable importance for us. I surely hope that the Lord
has a place for me and all of you in heaven! If we remain faithful, the Lord will never need to
give our place to anyone else.
I recall an analogy that Fr. John Reinkemeyer once explained to me about space travel and
the Resurrection: Remember when the world thrilled at the words, blast off as our scientific
genius made possible the travel of man in outer space? We could think of Our Lords ascension
(and our own, someday), as a blasting off from this earth on the strength of grace and virtue
instead of rocket fuel! It could be like the weightlessness of the astronauts in outer space, but in
our case, it would give us an understanding of what a glorified body would be like. Therefore, to
insure a perfect blast off when your time comes, prepare yourself well, have all of your parts in
working order (like the rocket), for unlike space travel where they postpone a liftoff if something
is wrong, there will be no postponing our take off , our flight from earth. Well go in whatever
shape our souls are in at the time!
Lets celebrate the Ascension, for Jesus is with us through His Spirit and His Sacraments. Try
to attend Mass somewhere next Thursday.

The splendor of the rose and the whiteness

of the lily do not rob the little violet of its
scent nor the daisy of its simple
charm. If every tiny
flower wanted to be
a rose, spring
would lose its
loveliness.
