ENVI Tools for ArcGIS

Image Processing and Analysis Tools Now in the ArcGIS Toolbox
Organizations around the globe increasingly depend on geospatial information in critical decision making
processes. Whether you are a defense or intelligence analyst, an urban planner, resource manager, or an
emergency responder, the need to have accurate and timely information about an area of interest is growing
exponentially. In order to meet these growing demands, software technologies must provide workflows
that are increasingly interoperable, easier to use, and provide data to large communities of users in a timely
manner.
Geospatial imagery is a powerful and cost effective way to update geodatabases with the most current
and detailed information about a geographic area. ITT and ESRI, as industry leaders respectively in remote
sensing software technologies and geographic information systems, have worked together in a multi-year
effort to integrate their two software technologies. This effort has resulted in the seamless integration of
ENVI and the ArcGIS platform to deliver the power of image analysis to the GIS environment. Now, the
integration of these two technologies takes the next step ENVI Tools for ArcGIS.

Access Proven ENVI Functionality as Tools within ArcGIS

With ENVI 4.8, ENVIs scientifically proven image analysis capabilities are available as discrete tools in the
ArcGIS toolbox and can be executed directly from ArcGIS desktop and server environments. Upon installation
of ENVI products, a selection of powerful image processing and analysis tools will be available within
ArcGIS. These tools will deliver the popular image processing and analysis functionality most useful in
providing important geospatial information for GIS applications including:
Detecting change over time
Finding features of interest or anomalies
Identifying and classifying features or
land cover
Categorizing terrain
Correcting for atmospheric conditions
Detecting and mapping lines of
communication
Analyzing LiDAR data

ENVI tools are available natively in ArcGIS,

making it easier than ever to add image processing
and analysis capabilities to GIS applications.

Add Image Analysis to GIS Models for Your Application

Information from geospatial imagery is often only a part of the data needed to get a complete representation of
an area of interest. Now, with ENVI tools for ArcGIS, image analysis processes can be integrated into GIS models
to add information from imagery to a variety of applications. Incorporating feature extraction and classification
tools into an urban planning model can deliver accurate and robust information regarding impervious vs. pervious
surface areas for a metropolitan area, increasing the accuracy and currency of land cover data. Adding change
detection and vegetation index tools to a model for resource management can give you complete information about
environmental impacts from man made or naturally occurring change. The ability to add image analysis processes
to GIS models further abstracts the complexities of image analysis and gives the power of geospatial information
extraction to GIS users without requiring remote sensing expertise.

Customizable ENVI Tools and Models

One of the most valuable features of ENVI
has always been the access to its underlying
development environment, IDL. This open
architecture platform also extends to ENVI
tools for ArcGIS, giving users the ability to
readily customize ENVI tools or to create new
image analysis tools from the full
compliment of ENVI functionality. Available
with a desktop deployment of ENVI plus
IDL, developing customized ENVI tools can
be done using simple IDL scripting and
wrappers that facilitate the integration of
ENVI tools with the ArcGIS platform.

Publishing to ArcGIS Server for

Enterprise and Web Applications

ENVI tools can be incorporated into ArcGIS models to easily add image analysis
processes to GIS applications.

ENVI tools for ArcGIS can be deployed in several different scenarios. They
can be used individually in the ArcGIS desktop or used to develop imagery
services that can be published to ArcGIS Server for use across a workgroup or
enterprise. For ArcGIS Server environments, a new version of ENVI, ENVI for
ArcGIS Server, is also now available, allowing multiple, concurrent uses of ENVI
image processing tools. ENVI for ArcGIS Server will expose ENVI capabilities
natively within ArcGIS Server allowing users to leverage server class resources
to speed processing and analysis workflows on large data stores. ENVI
processing tools can also be included in geoprocessing models and applications
for desktop users, for batch analysis, and over the internet as web services in a
variety of clients for remote users.
