Koifman, Natasha. "Can Social Media Actually Benefit Relationships?" The Huffington Post. 17
Oct. 2013. Web. 16 Mar. 2016.
This is a blog post about the positive affects of social media on relationships. The author
truly believes it has the ability to benefit and enhance personal interactions between
people and focuses on the helpful aspects increased technology has on our lifestyle and
relationships. The main points the writer touches on are 1: Linking in helps your build a
professional network, 2: Twitter is one of the best ways to reach out to companies, 3:
Tinder can expand your dating pool and introduce you to new matches, 4: Texting allows
you to get to know people in a more efficient way, 5: Facebook gives you the opportunity
to maintain relationships with friends and family regardless of distance, and 6: It helps
people open up. The author, Natasha Koifman created an organization called NKPR in
2002 in an effort to combine her two passions: shining a spotlight on stories of substance
and supporting causes that are making a difference around the world. She has been
recognized by the industry for her public relations expertise and her authoritative
commentary on popular culture. Winner of the 2014 Notable Public Relations and
Communications Award, and selected as one of the most innovative people in North
America by BizBash, Natasha currently shares her voice as the public relations expert on
Newstalk1010, contributes weekly to the Huffington Post and provides regular popculture commentary on Entertainment Tonight Canada. I think Natasha made some very
good points to think about. We often complain about technology, but I think we forget
how much it has helped us as humans as a whole when it comes to convince, research,
relationships, and many other things. The information is mainly opinionated of the

Mondin 3

authors viewpoint and is a popular source. The purpose of this communication is to

address the pros technology has had on us with support of examples that audiences of all
ages can relate to. This source is a positive leaning opinionated article about the good that
technology has on relationships, which isnt much different from my other sources other
than it just focuses on the good. This article brings forward some opposing opinions on
the positive side of technology whereas the other sources seemed to be a little more
argumentative leaning. It was helpful to read because it helped to make me remember all
the good technology does for us as humans as well as humans together. It helped me to
understand my topic more by showing a different side to the story we often forget. It has
not really changed how I feel about my topic, though I plan to use aspects from this
source in my project. I believe it will add a nice contrast of opinion and outlook.
Lickermen,Alex."TheEffectOfTechnologyOnRelationships."PsychologyToday.10
June2010.Web.14Mar.2016.
This is an article written by Alex Lickerman, a general internist and former director of
primary care at the University of Chicago. In this article, Lickerman focuses mainly on
the downsides to the advancements increased technologies and that much of our world is
corrupt with the dependency of it in our every day lives. He covers the psychological
aspect of how the small aspects of technology affect our everyday lifestyle and sense of
self. A couple of things mentioned in this article were some of the affects on humans that
are a result of this dependency or over usage on technology such as isolation, danger, and
etiquettes. Though, Lickerman also mentioned ways in which we can aid these issues
internally. I believe this article uses a hard approach to the topic in order to spike the
interests of people and to make it a personal experience rather than just an ultimatum. I

do think the author got carried away with his opinion at some spots, and that he was
pretty one-sided throughout the whole article until the very end which isnt a bad thing, it
just became more opinionated than I was expecting from a Psychology website. The
information isnt necessarily reliable because it all is mainly opinion or judgment, but
there were some very nice opportunities for aid in Lickermans Common Sense Rules. I
think the purpose of this article is to arise some issues, but to supply possible solutions.
The article doesnt call out everybody for having a phone nor is it gender or age defying,
but it looks at humans as a whole to see some possible ideas to have both technology and
moderation of it in our lives. This source is pretty opinionated, which Ive noticed is a
trend in a lot of the articles Ive found, but I do think it was helpful for me to read it. It
helped me be open to different ways of expressing solutions to this problem as well as
seeing a different perspective. I may use this source in my project just to show some ways
into which we can moderate our usage.
Powers, William. "How Our Digital Devices Are Affecting Our Personal Relationships." How
Our Digital Devices Are Affecting Our Personal Relationships RSS 20. 17 Jan. 2013.
Web. 14 Mar. 2016.
This source is a news station article written by William Powers Bostons NPR News
Station and it is about how our digital devices are affecting our personal relationships.
The article in itself had a couple different viewpoints from a variety of different people.
There are some opinions to which argue these devices do have a negative affect, but also
there are some that say there is no negative affect. I wouldnt assign this article a specific
side, but I would say they are very aware of some of the affects do have and have a very
realistic approach to the topic. The source helps to sum up the idea of technology and

Mondin 5

how it isnt bad, it has just lost some sense of moderation, not providing negative
comments, but more a factual input. In reading the article I found the author included
opinions of different people to support both opposing views, leading for not a correct
answer, but an open-ended question present. I think the source is very focused on the
objective, not creating bias but surfacing conversation of different views from the people.
Since the site itself isnt necessarily factual or data-supported it is very opinionated,
though not biased in doing so. It is just a newspaper article sparking the popular interest
of thoughts people have about the subject. I think the purpose of this article is to mainly
bring up questions and conversation of the topic, bringing people to think and selfevaluate based on their experience and view providing to people of all ages from adults to
young children. This source is probably one of the more open-ended sources, though I
think it still contains some valuable information with a holistic approach. I think other
than the lack of facts in this article that it will still provide me with some things to
consider. I found it helpful and refreshing to read this paper because it was purely about
the human and their experience rather than what we think is right or wrong. It has not
changed how I think about my topic, but it has helped me think of new ideas to research
in supporting my topic. I plan to use this source in my project because it will serve as an
un-biased viewpoint.
"Technology Can Have Positive or Negative Impact on Social Interactions." Humankinetics. 2010. Web. 14 Mar. 2016.
This is a book excerpt about the positive and negative affects on social skills. The source
remained un-biased throughout the whole article which was very refreshing. It focused
mainly on the fact of the matter rather with the opinions coming secondary. The main

Mondin 6

points were taking surveys and using those results to help the reader develop an opinion
of their own based on the results. Over the course of reading this article, the author
covered topics from the affects of gaming to television, to the affects it has on marriages
and how it has affects of peoples social lives. In itself, it was very enjoyable to read this
article because it gave me new viewpoints and actual data numbers to relate my opinion
to. This is helping me to form my opinion a bit better to be able to have a more un-biased
presentation. The author is not presented in the website, but the maker of the article is the
organization Human Kinetics. It is an organization focused on the well being of the
human body: physically, mentally, and emotionally, which is why I like this source so
much. The writer managed to deliver a paper that was un-biased, factual, inciting, and
easy to understand which was a very nice way to approach the topic. The information
seems to be a reliable website published by an association. The purpose of the article
seems to be to incite and inform to help develop an opinion of the people. It is intended to
audiences of all ages, gender and race, which is another nice aspect to appreciate. This
source is very different than the others of mine simply for the fact that it is more factual
rather than opinionated and it was really very refreshing to read. It helped provide me an
actual data statistic of the actual issue at hand which makes it fit for my research very
well. It has helped me think about the issue from a broken down view, really analyzing
different types of technology and their affects. I will definitely be using this source in my
project as support for my opinions and information.
