Anyone who owns a Himalayan Cat can tell you that there are literally hundreds of
interesting things about these cats that makes them the ideal the pet. However, there may be a
few things that even the most avid Himalayan cat owner may not know about this special
breed. For those who have never owned one of these beautiful felines but would like to learn

1. Although you will never see their name appear on any list of ten most popular breeds
of cats the Himalayan is considered the second most popular breed of cat in the world
today. The reason why Himalayan cats do not appear on any list of the most popular
cats is because these lists are made up from the International Cat Fanciers
Associations that considers Himalayans to be a variety of Persian cat not a separate
breed.
2. Himalayan cats have won over 41 national awards since 1981 and over 175 regional
awards since 1992. In 1998 Himalayans that were shown at cat shows averaged
almost 6 cats per show.
3. Since 1957 there have been almost 343,000 Himalayan cats registered.
4. Virginia Cobb a cat breeder and Dr. Clyde Keller of the Harvard Medical school began
development of the Himalayan cat in the 1030s by crossing a Siamese with a Persian.
The Cat Fanciers association accepts Himalayans as separate breed in 1957 and then
in 1980s re designated them as a variety of Persian.
5. Color points on the Himalayan cat are varied. Some of the most common accepted
color points are seal (black coloration) lilac, blue, chocolate, red, cream, and tabby or
tortoise coloration.
6. In order to produce chocolate or lilac color points in a kitten both parents must have
the chocolate or lilac genes. This is not true of the other color points that appear in
Himalayan cats.
7. There are actually two face shapes in the Himalayan cat breed. The doll face
Himalayan is not considered as meeting show characteristics as their faces lack the
flat features that is associated with this breed. However, they are popular among cat
owners who want a Himalayan for a pet. Extreme Himalayans have the flat face and
snub nose that is common to the Persian cat. Doll face Himalayan cats eyes are less
given to tearing.
8. The name for the Himalayan cat through out Europe is the color point Persian. Most
European countries do not recognize the Himalayan as a separate breed from the
Persian. So, if you are talking to a friend in England and mention your new
Himalayan kitten your friend may have no idea of what kind of cat you are talking
about even if she owns a dozen of them herself.
