Salient Features of 19th Livestock Census

The total livestock population consisting of Cattle, Buffalo, Sheep, Goat, pig, Horses & Ponies, Mules, Donkeys,
Camels, Mithun and Yak in the country is 512.05 million numbers in 2012. The total livestock population has
decreasedbyabout3.33%overthepreviouscensus.
Livestock population has increased substantially in Gujarat (15.36%), Uttar Pradesh (14.01%), Assam (10.77%),
Punjab(9.57%)Bihar(8.56%)Sikkim(7.96%),Meghalaya(7.41%),andChhattisgarh(4.34%).
The number of milch animals (inmilk and dry), cows and buffaloes, has increased from 111.09 million to 118.59
million,anincreaseof6.75%.
The number of animals in milk, cows and buffaloes, has increased from 77.04 million to 80.52 million showing a
growthof4.51%.
TheFemaleCattle(Cows)Populationhasincreasedby6.52%overthepreviouscensus(2007)andthetotalnumber
offemalecattlein2012is122.9millionnumbers.
The Female Buffalo population has increased by 7.99% over the previous census and the total number of female
buffalois92.5millionnumbersin2012.
Theexotic/crossbredmilchcattleincreasedfrom14.4millionto19.42million,anincreaseof34.78%.
Indigenousmilchcattleincreasedfrom48.04millionto48.12million,anincreaseof0.17%.
Themilchbuffaloesincreasedfrom48.64millionto51.05millionwithanincreaseof4.95%overpreviouscensus.
Thetotalsheepinthecountryis65.06millionnumbersin2012,declinedbyabout9.07%overcensus2007.
The Goat population has declined by 3.82% over the previous census and the total Goat in the country is 135.17
millionnumbersin2012.
Thetotalpigsinthecountryhavedecreasedby7.54%overthepreviouscensusandthetotalpigsinthecountryare
10.29millionnumbersin2012.
Horses&Poniespopulationhasincreasedby2.08%overthepreviouscensusandthetotalHorses&Poniesinthe
countryis0.62millionnumbersin2012.
ThetotalMulesinthecountryhaveincreasedby43.34%overthepreviouscensusandthetotalMulesinthecountry
are0.19millionnumbersin2012.
Camel population has decreased by 22.48% over the previous census and the total Camels in the country is 0.4
millionnumbersin2012.
ThetotalDonkeypopulationinthecountryhavedecreasedby27.22%overthepreviouscensusandthetotaldonkeys
inthecountryare0.32millionnumbersin2012.
Thetotalpoultrypopulationinthecountryhasincreasedby12.39%overthepreviouscensusandthetotalpoultryin
thecountryis729.2millionnumbersin2012.
ThetotalMithunandYakinthecountryhasregisteredagrowthratesof12.98%and7.64%respectivelyoverthe
previouscensusandtheMithunsandYaksinthecountryis0.29millionand0.07millioninnumbersrespectively.
