INTRODUCTION.

The three Computer- Based Tools, Computer-Aided Design(CAD), Computer-Aided

Engineering(CAE), and Computer-Aided Manufacturing(CAM) have been took part in
the shipbuilding industry since the early 1950s, and it had been expanding during the
early 1960s to fabrication activities and certain design. Through the 1970s, th e first CAD
and CAM had been a commercial system. Well it has been a short time of evolution
which has been taken place compared to the present age of shipbuilding.
CAD, CAE and CAM. This is the also software that use in UniKL Malaysian Institute of
Marine Engineering Technology(MIMET). In the university, it have four courses in
diploma such as Diploma in Ship Design, Marine Engineering, Ship Construction and
Electrical. Beside that, in Degree have four courses too. It BNASB, BMO, BMEE, and
BME.
So our objective is to identify the software that are using by students at UniKL MIMET.
Why it is relevant to using all the software above?. The suggestion fot the new software
(CAD/CAE/CAM) for UniKL MIMET.

ABOUT COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN(CAD).

Computer-Aided Design(CAD) is a direct outgrowth of the traditional drafting board

approach to ship design. CAD depicts geometry and dimensions on a computer monitor
and not directly on paper. They may have extensive parts libraries, cut-and-paste
capabilities, and efficient, menu-driven user interfaces.
Examples of CAD software.
AutoCAD- AutoDesk, United States
AutoCAD for 2D and 3D drawing is complete, it brings AutoCAD for student to
design the most popular program compared to other programs.
This is basic for student want to learn it from 2D to 3D.
It used command short cut such as circle as 'c' compared to inventor.

SOLIDWORKS

Solidworks is a solid modeler, and utilizes a parametric feature-based approach to

create models and assemblies.
5

It usually starts with a 2D sketch (although 3D sketches are available for power
users). the sketch consists of geometry such as points, lines, arcs, conics (except
the hyperbola), and splines.

INVENTOR
inventor is called a parametric modeler because the sizes of the features and their
relationship with each other.
It use to combined component to a component and easy to finish quickly in every
mode. It also helps students 3D design component in the form compared
AutoCAD.
Personalize the function keys quickly and easily inside any environment such as
2D sketch, sheet metal, drawing and others.
ABOUT COMPUTER-AIDED ENGINEERING(CAE).

Computer-Aided Engineering(CAE) automates various ship design calculations in the

areas of hull and equipment. Typical CAE programs specialize in specific areas, such as
ship structure, some are modules of more integrated ship design programs and represent
an evolutionary link to product model programs.

Example of CAE software.

Maxsurf- Formation Design Systems Pty, Australia
Used for hydrostatics, hull design, fairing and hull structure.
Provide student with software tool for all phases analysis process and vessel
design.
LABVIEW

LabVIEW (short for Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench)

LabVIEW is a graphical programming platform that helps students scale from design
to test and from small to large systems.

MARINE ENGINEERING SIMULATION

The Marine Engineering Simulation Software shall be capable of simulating a
realistic environment for all applicable, or qualifying.
This software can shows the problem at the ship such as:

Planning schedules and operation procedure

Analysis of engine performance

Monitoring and control functions

Fault detection

Maintaining a safe engineering watch

Operation of main and auxiliary machinery and associated control systems

Operation of pumping systems and associated control systems

Operation of alternators, generators and control systems

Safety and emergency procedures

Prevention of pollution

ABOUT COMPUTER-AIDED MANUFACTURING(CAM).

Computer-Aided Manufacturing(CAM) programs help the bridge the gap between ship
design and construction. CAM programs develop data for se in areas such as welding,
cutting, lifting, bending, forming, planning, and monitoring.
Example of Computer-Aided Manufacturing(CAM).

ALPHACAM
Alphacam is intelligent for Woodworking, Metal & Stone Cutting.
The emphasis of Alphacam is to provide customers with productivity, reliability
and flexibility.
WHY THE SOFTWARE IS RELEVANT TO STUDENT FOR STUDY IN THEIR
COURSE?

First for all, in this modern technology, people are no longer using design the ship in
traditional way. So using computers technology that are used in every courses in UniKL
MIMET is to provide accuracy, flexibility, cost-savings, efficiency, record-keeping, vast
storage, decision-making tools, and modeling. CAD or CAM is the main of engineering
design. Any automobile component, machine part, or industrial design has to be designed
using CAD, CAM and CAE. It usthe design.e to increase in the productivity of the
designer and engineer. The software helps in visualizing the final product that is to be
made, it subassemblies and constituent parts. It also helps in synthesizing, analyzing, and
documenting. It also will improve the quality of the design with the offered large number
of tools that help in carrying out thorough engineering analysis of the proposed design.
The tool help to consider large number of investigations.

SUGGESTION FOR THE NEW SOFTWARE IN UNIKL MIMET.

Today most service in the world involves electronic communication neither in public or at
home. Some people can admit the involve of the electronic communication and some
people does not really know how to use it, as same as the computer-based tools situation.
In Computer-Aided Manufacturing(CAM), we prefer to suggest CATIA because it is
increasingly chosen as the primary 3D design system from many companies in the world.
Learn to use CATIA also learn to work with leading-edge technology and play on
important role in innovation. There is no boundaries in CATIA and it is very useful for
you to put your imagination wit full speed. Once your know how to use it, you had
equipped with the most versatile design tool that's applied in many industries.
Beside that, in Computer-Aided Engineering(CAE), we prefer ProE as our suggestion.
ProE is a multi-programs software that can be used for design, analysis and
manufacturing. In this portion of the course that you will be dealing with the first
9

capability of ProE which deals with the model creation and assembly of design.
Lastly, for Computer-Aided Design(CAD), we prefer to suggest Fibersim software for
composites engineering is used by numerous leading manufactures in the aerospace,
automotive, marine, and wind energy industries. It supports all of the complex and unique
design and manufacturing necessary to engineer durable, innovative, lightweight
composite product and parts. It's also the only comprehensive software that addresses the
entire composites engineering process- from conception, laminate definition, and ply
creation through simulation, documentation and manufacturing.

CONCLUSION.

In this assignment, we can conclude that the Computer-Based Tools is very important in
marine engineering study in order to design, operate and drawing the ship. It help to savecosting and easy to manage. This assignment help us to know more about the software
that have been use for degree and diploma students in UniKL MIMET. We able to know
the function of each software even though we are not learn in our course.
