Introduction:

Do not call me an Islamo-phobe. Rather, call me an Islamo-realist.

Come along with me through this paper and I’ll show you why.

My alarm about Islam began on 9/11. Before then, like most Americans, I had no strong
opinions about Islam. I stood on my rooftop watching the Twin Towers send plumes of
black smoke into the air and later that day breathed in little white particles of incinerated
people – my fellow citizens. It felt as if an evil hand were reaching across my great city,
determined to squeeze the life out of it. That’s when I began to educate myself about
Islam.

Like many Americans, I’d prefer to believe that Islam has the same ethics of love, peace,
and respect for human life as the Judaism and Christianity with which I am familiar. I’d
rather not have to be leery of a mass of people that large. With a worldwide population
of something like 1.5 billion Muslims that is growing very fast, it is downright eerie to
have to think that Islam’s values are fundamentally hostile to those of other religions.
But, you might object, doesn’t Islam practice godly transcendence, and have the same
sublime values and practices of most religions? Yes, there are Muslims who practice
Islam in this way, but they are not following the actual dictates of Islam, which is to
spread itself across the globe, with or without the consent of those it conquers.

This attitude is based on the life of its founder, Mohammed, the theology of Islam, and its
history as an empire builder.

The Roots of Islam:

Let’s start with Mohammed, believed by Muslims to be the messenger of Islam and the
one and only Perfect Man, the model for all Muslim men. According to a recently
released official booklet put out by the Saudi Wahhabi “Propagation Office,” Mohammed
is “the greatest individual in history… and the most mature man” [1]. He is described in
the sweetest of terms: he is “kind-hearted and merciful” [1, p. 10], steadfastly truthful,
trustworthy and altruistic, as well as moral and selfless beyond compare.

A Portrait of Mohammed – Stripped of Hype:

The life of Mohammed is known to us through three sources: the Koran, the Hadith (the
sayings of Mohammed) and the Suna (notes made about Mohammed’s activities).
According to these sources, we have quite a bit of biographical information about
Mohammed. He was born in Mecca around 570 C.E., the only child of poor parents with

little to give him. His father died before he was born and his mother, Amina, gave him
up to be nursed by another woman. Amina had a mental disease – she suffered with
hallucinations - and died when he was only six years old [2]. Mohammed was then
raised by an uncle who put him to work as a lowly camel driver on his caravans. This
was a humiliating position in a society in which money and power were extremely
important. However, there was a compensation for him. Traveling with his uncle’s
caravans throughout Arabia and as far as Syria and Palestine brought Mohammed into
contact with educated Jews and Christians, who told him about their beliefs. This
informal education taught him about the religions of societies that were more settled and
developed than the one that Mohammed belonged to, giving him an edge over other
nomadic Arabians.

When Mohammed was about 25, Ethiopia invaded Arabia and he was asked by his tribe
to help defend Mecca. However, Mohammed could not bear the stress of war. He tried
to fight but ended up running away, which led to contempt and ostracism from his tribe
[2]. Mohammed then went on to work as a shepherd, yet another menial position in his
society. His luck did not improve until he was employed by a rich older widow,
Khadijah, who later asked him to marry her and eventually put him in charge of her
business. Unfortunately, none of this fit in with the Arabic notion of manliness. Nor did
marriage remove the stigma of contempt and unmanliness he bore, since his marriage
made him look weak and dependent in a culture that valued masculine leadership.
Mohammed was still alienated from his fellow Meccans, whose rage against him began
to grow. His uncle protected him by arguing that Mohammed was mentally ill, which his
uncle truly believed. As we look at this brief psychological portrait of Mohammed and
his early circumstances, we do not get a picture of someone with a secure background,
one that could produce a stable and loving personality as depicted in Muslim lore.
Instead, Mohammed’s personality appears be that of a needy, weak, frightened man.

Perhaps just to get away from it all, Mohammed separated himself from Meccan society
and spent time alone meditating in the hills surrounding Mecca [2]. There he had what
he eventually called revelations from God, brought to him by the angel Gabriel. But
Mohammed himself was not convinced at first that these revelations were from God and
thought he might be possessed by a demon. Those around him also thought he might be
possessed by a demon or mentally ill. Mohammed took this possibility of demonic
possession so seriously and was so disturbed by it that he considered killing himself.
Eventually the messages stopped for three long years, leaving Mohammed feeling
abandoned by God, and even unworthy to be alive [2]. Only after much time had passed
did Mohammed decide that the messages must be coming from God through the angel
Gabriel. However, later critics of Islam cast doubt on this angelic source, ascribing
Mohammed’s visions to either the devil or mental illness, specifically, epilepsy. Perhaps
they were keeping in mind his mother’s proneness to hallucinations. Was Mohammed
mentally ill when he had his visions? Perhaps. Sometimes he lost consciousness, heard
the sound of bells, and perspired even when it was cold [2]. Obviously, a semi-psychotic
Mohammed would be a contradiction of the founder of Islam as The Perfect Man.

Even after Mohammed was fairly sure that the messages came from the angel Gabriel, he
was still filled with dread [3]. Note this is entirely different from the way visions come to
people in the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. Angelic messages arrive with
feelings of certainty about God’s presence, and clear knowledge that it is God speaking.
The God of the Bible is a knowable God. If there is any doubt at all, it is the recipients
wondering about their human ability to do what God asks of them. The presence of God
– and certainty that God is really God and not the devil - are never questions for Biblical
visionaries. Mohammed was not at all certain that his revelations did not come from the
devil, but he decided to call them godly after all. If he was uncertain, can’t we be too?
Can't we wonder if he called himself a prophet to compensate for a lifetime of low status
and humiliation? It is telling that Mohammed and other Muslims can tolerate so much
confusion and ambiguity about God and the devil – about basic good and evil. We can
wonder about the formation of their consciences and their notions of morality. We can
also wonder if there is a certain dissociation from reality in the thinking of Muslims,
which we will discuss later in a section on the ecstasy of the suicide bomber.

Was Mohammed holy? The Koran tells us that Mohammed was found by Allah while he
was “wandering” and that he was given “guidance” by Allah (93:6-8), which contradicts
an extant Muslim fable that he was so holy he knew Allah from his infancy. If
Mohammed knew God from his infancy, why was he uncertain about the source of the
messages he got as an adult? Further doubts are raised about the holiness of the source of
Mohammed’s religious ideas when we realize that his revelations began only after he had
been married for fourteen years to his first wife, Khadijah, who had already adopted a
kind of monotheism. Khadijah and a wide circle of her friends and family practiced what
was called the Hanif tradition of monotheism. While neither explicitly Christian nor
Jewish, this practice emphasized turning away from polytheism and idol worship as
Abraham did in the Jewish Bible. There were other practitioners of Hanif in
Mohammed’s area, and they regularly went off to the hills around Mecca to meditate in
solitude, just as Mohammed did (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanif). The question
naturally arises: Was Mohammed influenced by his wife and her circle to develop his
new religion? It is surprising that so little attention has been paid to the influence of
Khadijah on Mohammed since she supported him both emotionally and theologically,
and as we said earlier, she even pulled him out of poverty and gave him an already
prosperous business to manage. To claim that Mohammed’s Gospel fell out of the sky
seems increasingly disingenuous. Besides, we must wonder if he was truly illiterate, as
his believers like to maintain in order to strengthen the idea of the divine origin of the
Koran. Since he handled his wife’s financial transactions, wouldn’t it be likely he knew
how to read and write business contracts and accounts?

We must also question if Islam is truly a monotheistic religion since Mohammed’s


presence is so central to it, as seen in the Koran and the Hadiths. If it were just a matter
of worshipping God Himself, who needs Mohammed? Raising Mohammed to something
like divine status, makes him at best an impediment to direct worship and at worst, an
idol. Instead of its claim to spiritual purity, Islam appears to be a case of bi-theism, with
Mohammed and Allah having almost equal valence. In the Jewish Bible, Moses is seen
as the founder of a nation, yet he is not treated as perfect: he had human flaws of self-

doubt and hesitation. In the Christian Bible, Jesus is seen as perfect but he is in fact God
– one of the three persons of the Holy Trinity.

Mohammed’s native Meccans rejected him as their prophet. Eventually, however,


Mohammed attracted a small band of followers who apparently were not interested in the
kind of critical thinking discussed above, and he established a power base in Medina.
With the earlier rejections of the still Meccans rankling within him, Mohammed took his
small band of supporters, who were “between jobs,” and ordered them to raid the
caravans going to and from Mecca. Notwithstanding that a peace had recently been
declared, banning such raids, Mohammed broke the peace and attacked his own
clansmen, the Meccans. These raiding parties failed until Mohammed broke an even
more sacred standard and attacked during the month of Ramadan, which had always been
respected as a time for peace. (Note that Ramadan was a pagan holiday that preceded
Islam, yet it is carried over as central to Islam.) Mohammed’s spin on this infamous
betrayal was that it gave divine sanction to his new cult. He rationalized this breach of
trust and impious act by “receiving” a revelation from Allah authorizing him to conduct
warfare during Ramadan (Koran 2:217).

This was to be the first of many such ‘made to order’ revelations permitting Mohammed
to make his own moral code. Such a practice allowed him to damn poetry after feeling
nettled by his inability to master it, as well as smarting from the critical remarks of a
female poet (Koran 26:224, 37:35-36, 52-29), and so he explained away his deficiencies
in poetry by having Allah say, “We have not taught versification to our prophet” (Koran
36-68-69). It allowed him to break precedent by marrying the wife of his son-in-law –
because he found her extremely beautiful - essentially both stealing her from his son-in-
law and violating the incest laws that were in effect at that time. It was used to let his
men rape the captured wives of men who they were holding hostage, even after the
Muslims had promised not to violate the women if they were given ransom money, which
they were. The rape of married women had already been established in the Koran as
lawful (Koran 4:24) but Mohammed’s troops betrayed their word here regarding ransom
money. We see here that the Muslims broke their word to fellow Arabs, a practice that
they felt at least equally free to do to others of different races. We also see in
Mohammed’s portrait that he was given to broken promises, rationalizations, and fits of
narcissistic rage. When a man captured in a battle pleaded for his life so that he could
care for his young daughter, Mohammed received another revelation directing him to
take no prisoners until he had “made slaughter in the land” (Koran 8:68).

Do we see a pattern here? Every time Mohammed breaks a convention honoring life and
respecting the rights of others, he becomes bolder. Soon he was to receive a revelation
about unbelievers as “the worst animals” (Koran 8:55), which led to endless directives
from his God to kill infidels, Jews, and Christians in the most sadistic way. Even among
his own people, apostates were savaged. The non-believers from a certain tribe called
Ukl had their hands and feet cut off, their eyes pulled out, and were left to bleed to death
in the hot sun [2]. This story is included as a victory to rejoice over in Bukhari’s Hadith
[4] (Vol. 7, bk. 71, no. 590). After Mohammed defeated an army sent by the Meccans to
his stronghold in Medina, he was emboldened to commit his biggest massacre up till

then. In one night, he beheaded about 900 men from the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza,
threw their bodies in trenches, and took the women of the tribe as slaves and concubines.
Minutes after being ripped from the protection of their fathers and husbands, the women
were divided up as sexual spoil; their impossibly ironic fate - to breed new Muslims.

Mohammed had formerly looked up to the Jews. His earlier pronouncements say that
“the People of the Book” should not be argued with (Koran 29:46). Perhaps he was
hoping to win acceptance and approval from those from whom he had learned so much.
The rejection by the Jews of his new religion was too much to bear, however, and he
reacted with characteristic rage to this narcissistic injury. As we know from the
American Psychiatric Association’s definition of narcissism, it is a severe character
disorder marked by grandiosity, arrogance, envy, lack of empathy, and excessive
expectations of both admiration and entitlement to receive compliance from others
[5] (emphasis added.)

Apart from his war practices, critics of Mohammed look askance at his character. They
point to his marriage to a girl of six, Aisha, which was consummated when she was nine
and he was fifty-four. In our culture, this is pedophilia and child molestation, yet in the
Muslim world it becomes the justification for many similar ‘marriages’ of little girls to
old men. Mohammed’s war lord behavior and enslavement of people he conquered
function in the same way as models for good Muslims. Critics can also point to
Mohammed’s eleven marriages, seven more than are allowed by the Koran, including his
hastily arranged marriage to his daughter-in-law, and wonder if he was selfish and lustful.
They can note that the dictations he received from God appear to change to suit his needs,
especially when it comes to acquiring new wives, or pursuing aggressive war plans and
breaking treaties. The Hadith [4] tells us that he was afraid whenever a strong wind blew
(Bukhari vol. II, no. 144) and afraid of eclipses (Bukhari vol. II, no. 167). It also tells us
that Mohammed was superstitious, believing in the evil eye, amulets, omens, spells, and
the like (Bukhari vol. 1, no. 144; vol. IV, nos. 110, 111; vol. VII, nos. 636, 648, 649,
650). Superstition is pagan and belies faith in Allah. And from his favorite wife, Aisha,
we learn that he hallucinated having sex (Bukhari Vol. 7, Number 660). Other Haditha
tell us that Muhammad at times came under magical spells, claiming to be bewitched, and
that he told lies and did bizarre things while under those spells (Bukhari vol. IV, nos. 400,
490; VII, no. 660; Muslim vol. III, no. 5428).

If it can be admitted that Mohammed told lies and did strange things while under satanic
influence, then the entire Koran could be satanic in origin, since it all springs from him,
and even he believed for a long time that his messages might be coming from the devil.
A further source of embarrassment to Muslims is that there are some two dozen
grammatical errors in the Koran and several wrong cases [2]. Muslims claim that the
angel Gabriel dictated the Koran in perfect Arabic, although this is just not so, according
to linguists [6]. In addition, there are many words from foreign languages in the Koran,
which also contradicts the claims the Koran makes about itself – that it is written entirely
in Arabic without any foreign words (Koran 16:103; 41:44). These words arose, it would
seem, from Mohammed’s conversations with non-Arabs while traveling on business, as
well as from his later foreign conquests.

The Koran Draws on Jewish, Christian and Pagan Sources:

Now we must continue to question if these revelations really come straight from God
based on their lack of originality. If they were truly God’s literal words, uncreated by
humans, why would they be full of unacknowledged and garbled borrowings from
Judaism, Christianity, Arab paganism, and Zoroastrianism? The Arabia of Mohammed’s
day had many powerful Jewish tribes living there – this was before they were wiped out
or marginalized by the spread of Islam. It is likely that Mohammed picked up his central
ideas of what religion is supposed to be like from them.

For example, from the Jewish Bible, Mohammed got his ideas about Adam and Eve,
monotheism, and the importance of the role of prophets in establishing religious
principles. We see other similarities in the six days of creation, divine revelation, and
ideas of retribution including the last judgment and resurrection [7]. Mohammed also
mixed in ideas he borrowed from the Talmud, a collection of rabbinic commentaries and
interpretations of the Hebrew Bible, as well as Jewish law, ethics, customs and history.
Since the Talmud was first compiled in the second century C.E and again in the fifth
century, it would have been known to the Jews of Mecca, who could have talked about it
with Mohammed. These acquired ideas were most likely lifted from Judaism and then
twisted into something new in the manner of one who has only heard snippets of
conversation, and from them tried to create a new and coherent account. However,
Mohammed’s understanding of Biblical ideas and figures was very confused. He had no
concept of the sequence of events in the Bible and seems to have missed the broader
ethical teachings, as well as the central concept of a loving God who makes Himself
known in His relationship with His people.

There is an often quoted passage from the Koran: “We ordained for the Children of
Israel that if any one slew a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in
the land – it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it
would be as if he saved the life of the whole people” (Koran 5:32). This injunction comes
right after the Koran’s retelling of the Cain and Abel story. It makes no sense to speak of
slaying a whole people here, since only Abel was murdered by Cain - until we look at the
Talmud’s comment on the story, keeping in mind that the story originated in the Talmud
(Mishnah, IV Division 5), which was written previously to the Koran. The Talmud
interprets the story in this way. “It is not said (in the Bible) blood in the singular, but
bloods in the plural, that is, his own blood and the blood of his seed. Man was created
single in order to show that to him who kills a single individual it shall be reckoned that
he has slain the whole race, but to him who preserves the life of a single individual it is
counted that he hath preserved the whole race” [3]. First of all, one must note the almost
exact duplication of words and meanings in this passage plagiarized from the Talmud.
Secondly, one must note the moral wiggle room afforded to jihadists in the phrase
“unless it be for spreading mischief.” The Koran states that any disagreement with its
teachings is considered an act of ‘mischief.’ In fact, disagreements with the Koran are
considered heresies and are punishable by beheading. This renders the entire injunction
against killing cited above, not only NOT merciful, but meaningless. However, it has
become a useful tool in the practice of taqiyya, or holy deception, among Muslims. Thus,

a Muslim can put himself in a good light and gain unmerited trust by saying he would
never kill an innocent person. What the hapless non-Muslim does not know, however, is
that by the simple fact of not believing in Allah, he is guilty and deserves to die, in the
eyes of the Koran. ["Kill non-Muslims wherever you find them. Lie in wait and ambush
them, seize and capture them using every stratagem of war. If they convert to Islam and
pray and contribute to the cause of Islam (Jihad), let them go." (Koran 9:5) "When you
win a war over non-Muslims, torture them severely so that they may learn a lesson."
(Koran 8:57)] . It should also be noted that the ‘saving a life part of the line’ is taken
directly from the Talmud, which is not followed by anything like an injunction to kill.
Rather, the Talmud goes on to talk about the holiness of life.i

To return to the theme of the Koran lifting concepts and phrases from other religions, we
look now at the Ebionites, an early Jewish sect that believed in some tenets of
Christianity; they were influential from the first to the fourth centuries [8]. They were
one of several early Christian sects that were later ignored or suppressed by historians, in
their case most likely because they opposed the teachings of St. Paul, and other tenets of
what was to become the canon. Ascetics, they took their name from the Hebrew word for
‘poor ones:’ ebyonim. The Ebionites retained an emphatic belief in the Mosaic Law,
which Islam turns into a highly legalistic approach to religion, one which explicitly
rejects a doctrine of salvation by grace alone. The Ebionites saw Jesus as holy because of
his outstanding righteousness, but not because he was the son of God. As Jewish
believers in Christ who were struggling to reconcile the teachings of Judaism with
Christianity, they could not accept that Jesus was the son of God, nor that he was
resurrected. This anti-Trinitarian view of God was adopted by the Muslims, who include
Mary and Jesus in their story, but change it radically from the Christian one, as we shall
see.

Originally, Mohammed ordered prayer in the direction of Jerusalem, acknowledging the


influence of Judaism on his creed, but when he became outraged by the Jews’ lack of
excitement about the ‘improvements’ he made to their religion, he changed the direction
to Mecca in order to differentiate himself from the Jews. (Ironically, Muslims now claim
Jerusalem as one of their holy sites, their scant evidence being a dream Mohammed had
of traveling there on an imaginary beast.) Islamic food laws are a simplified version of
Jewish kashrut, as we see in the avoidance of pork. Mohammed quoted Moses more than
one hundred times in the Koran (though not always accurately), and of the 25 prophets
listed in the Koran, 19 are from Jewish scripture. Islam lays a heavy emphasis on the
long line of prophets in both the Old and the New Testaments, which ends in Mohammed
proclaiming himself the final prophet. It is odd that Mohammed should call himself a
prophet, that is, one who makes predictions, because the few times he did, his predictions
about the Day of Judgment were either embarrassingly meaninglessii or just plain wrong
– that is, they did not come true.iii Most likely he was aspiring to the Old Testament role
of prophet as a moral guide. However, this is contradicted by evidence in one of the
Hadiths that Mohammed had to beg for forgiveness seventy times a day (Bukhari, vol. I,
nos. 711,718; vol. V., no.539). Unlike Christians and Jews, Muslims believe that
prophets must be sinless. Therefore, how can Mohammed be a prophet, since he had
obviously sinned many times?

The Ebionites were despised by both Jews and Christians because their doctrines were
heretical to both, yet Mohammed took on some of their teachings. Was he identifying
with this rejected group as a way of expressing a sense of inferiority, a sense of being an
outsider, just as Ismael, the illegitimate, exiled son of Abraham who became the father of
the Arabs, is presented to us in the Jewish Bible? Certainly, Mohammed’s early life had
an abundance of circumstances inducing feelings of rejection and alienation, as described
above. I would like to venture the speculation that Mohammed’s later claims to be a
prophet arose as compensation for a lowly and humiliated past. It is not hard to imagine
fatherless Mohammed becoming taken with the ways of Jews who believed in a
powerful, unitary God they called ‘Father,’ and to see Mohammed trying to win
acceptance from this band of believers by doing them one better – by inventing his own
messages from God and seeing himself as a prophet. Jewish disinterest in joining
Mohammed’s new theology led to his first major massacre – the Jews of Quaraysh, with
whom he had a peace pact. Mohammed called Jews apes and pigs (Koran 2:65; 7:166;
5:60) just before ordering their massacre, his first major blood-letting. It appears that
Mohammed had a hard time dealing with rejection, especially from those to whom he
was so indebted. This is highly unsettling. Now the plagiarist denies not only the original
author but the author’s intentions and values, twisting the very core of its meaning. One
thinks again of Ishmael and wonders if Mohammed felt resentful and narcissistically
entitled to do whatever he wanted as he stole from the heritage of the legitimate and
preferred descendents of Abraham (Genesis 21: 1-21).

If these psychological speculations seem unkind, one can take comfort in knowing that
perhaps they are unnecessary. A number of modern historians doubt that Mohammed
ever even existed as an actual individual. Rather, they think he was created as something
of a figurehead meant to pull together the cultural, legal and spiritual concerns of the
vastly diverse peoples comprising the rapidly expanding Islamic empire. These new
historians state that there is no physical evidence of records made about Mohammed’s
life during his lifetime. All the information we have about him came well after his death,
and therefore they could be confabulations [9]. By contrast, there is an abundance of
archeological material pertaining to Jewish life of the Old Testament eras.

If Mohammed the man never existed, we still must ask why he is central to the Islamic
story, and why he is considered the ideal man by millions of Muslims. What does it say
about Islamic culture and values that they revere a man who – at least, to Western eyes -
was a pedophile, a warlord, a liar, a bigamist?

Let us now examine Islam’s claim that it is an extension of Judaism and Christianity and
that it reforms them. The Koran is packed with Biblical characters, but their stories are
mixed up, with ridiculous results. Haman from the period of the Jewish Babylonian exile
(6th century B.C.E.) is thought to be the minister of Pharaoh (approximately 13th century
B.C.E.), and Mary the mother of Jesus (1st century C.E.) is mistaken for Miriam, the
sister of Moses and Aaron (13th century B.C.E.) This would require obviously
impossible jumps across time, place and meaning, and so one concludes that their
inclusion is simply a mistake, a garbling of something overheard in an undisciplined way.
Either illiterate Mohammed pulled together these snippets or various other sources of the

Koran patched together bits and pieces of religious and cultural lore taken from a
complex of conquered peoples.

As for the Christian influence on the Koran, much of it comes from the tales of heretical
Christian sects who were expelled from the Roman Empire and then migrated to Arabia
before the time of Muhammad. From books called The Gospel of Thomas the Israelite
and The Gospel of the Infancy, Chapters 1, 36, and 46, come stories that Jesus spoke from
the cradle and created birds of clay which he then made come alive (Koran 3:41-43,
5:119). From the heretic known as Basilides, comes the idea that Jesus was not really
crucified (Koran 4:156). Denying the divinity of Jesus, the Koran erroneously thinks that
the Trinity consists of an earth-bound biological father, mother, and son (Koran 4:169,
5:77), which harkens back to Egyptian Pharonic ideas of holy numbers that used three as
a base.

Islam teaches that Jesus was not crucified and resurrected, that he was a man like all
others, and that Jesus was no more than a messenger like other figures in the Jewish and
Christian Bibles. In fact, the Koran strenuously denies the divinity of Jesus, declaring
“The fate of believers in Jesus is Hell Fire” (Koran 5:72-75). Muslims teach that even
the Bible does not believe that Jesus was God, claiming that none of the original writers
of the Bible saw him as divine, which either denies, ignores, or is unaware of the obvious
centrality in the New Testament of the divine nature of Jesus. Perhaps most annoying to
a Christian would be the Koran’s statement that Jesus himself predicted that Mohammed
would be the prophet to follow him. Thus, chapter 6, verse 6 of the Koran states:

And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O Children of Israel! I am the
messenger of Allah sent to you, confirming Torah, which came before me, and
giving Glad Tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name shall be
Ahmad.

Ahmad is the short form of Mohammed. However, there are no Glad Tidings about
Ahmad in the New Testament. Muslim traditions are full of stories that Christians were
expecting another prophet after Jesus and that they recognized Mohammed as one even at
his birth, sort of like Jesus’ nativity. But there are no Christian writings about any
prophet coming after Jesus, especially one who will be born in Arabia 540 years after
Jesus died. There is not even any record of Christian heresies with such expectations.
So this belief must be made up from sheer fantasy. Nevertheless, Islam likes to say it
respects Christianity. Clearly, it does not, not from a Christian point of view. There is an
insult embedded in Islam’s way of rejecting Jesus as God, yet laying claim to Him as one
of their own. They say that Jesus was a Muslim, a prophet of Allah who proceeded
Mohammed, the final and perfect prophet. Thus, a kind of reconciliation is made, but
only at the expense of reducing the God that Christians know to a mere subordinate of
Mohammed. This kind of bogus respect is mirrored in the Islamic political process of
saying it ‘respects’ Christian and Jewish populations, but only if they yield to Muslim
supremacy.

Muslims claim that in pre-Islamic times, Allah was the biblical God of the Jewish
patriarchs and prophets, as well as the Christian apostles, and that he was the true God
from which Jews and Christians have deviated, to which all must ‘revert.’ In fact, the
very credibility of Islam as a religion stands or falls on its core claim of historical
continuity with Judaism and Christianity. However, Islam has many disavowed pagan
roots. There is archaeological evidence that Allah, far from being the biblical God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, was actually a moon-god. The Arabic Sabeans were a tribe in
southwest Arabia who worshipped a moon-god they called Almaqah, who is represented
on monuments by a cluster of lightning bolts surrounding a curved, sickle-like weapon
(www.wikipedia.org). They fasted thirty days from nightfall to sunrise, observed the
holiday of Eed from the setting of five stars, and venerated the Ka'ba, all of which is
done in Islam [7, 10]. Other scholars believe that the name “Allah” comes from the word
"Al-Ilah," which pagan Arabs used in their worship of one of the gods in the Ka’ba [11].
Still other scholars trace the Koran’s sources to more distant pagan influences in the area:
Samaritan, Nestorian, and Syriac [7]. Islam also incorporates pagan Zoroastrian sources.
Mohammed’s night journey into heaven parallels the second century Persian story of a
heroic figure called Arta Viraf, who was guided by an angel through a series of Heavens
[12]. Zoroastrianism also inspired the Islamic belief that dark-eyed virgins await every
man who enters heaven. And the Islamic ritual of praying five times a day most likely
comes from the Syrian Sabeans, polytheists who practiced an ecumenical mixture of the
Babylonian and Hellenic religions [13].

Other direct ties to Arabian pagan practices abound: Mecca was a pre-Islamic pagan
center of worship; the Ka’ba shrine in Mecca was a temple filled with three hundred and
sixty idols; pilgrims journeyed to Mecca and then ran between two hills and around the
Ka’ba seven times; they kissed and caressed a large black stone on the wall of the Ka’ba;
a magical number of stones were thrown at a pillar representing the devil; public
meetings were held on Friday instead of on Saturday or Sunday; water was snorted in and
out of the nose as part of the ritual cleansing before prayer; thieves were punished by
cutting off their hands. All these pagan practices are essential parts of the Muslim
religion. One has to wonder why Islam adopted all these practices wholesale from
sources they said they despised and had come to eradicate. Was this a concession to
pagan tribes to win their participation in broader Islamic practices? Or is Islam so full of
pagan practices because it is a pastiche of various religious and cultural practices resting
on a pagan base with a veneer of respectability coming from misunderstood monotheistic
beliefs drawn from the People of the Book? It is of interest psychologically that the
contradictions that are rife in Islam are not of much apparent interest to Muslims. Is that
because sheer emotion overpowers reason and logic, and that this stance is an
unquestioned cultural norm?

I am taking pains to show you the human sources of the Koran because it is essential to
appreciate the importance of theology to Muslims and to debunk the Islamic argument
that the Koran is the perfect and uncreated word of God. Follow their logic. If the Koran
is the perfect expression of God’s will for humankind, then it MUST be followed and
those who impose it on us are doing us a great favor. We would indeed be vile if we
turned away from holiness, right? So goes their thinking. Spreading the religion fits in

with the Muslim plan of salvation. Islamic reasoning is that all non-believers are lost in
darkness. They are seen as morally filthy and they contaminate Muslims both spiritually
and physically. These beliefs come directly from the Koran, and are the explanation for
why Saudi Arabia closes off its “holy cities” to non-Muslims and does not allow the
public practice of other religions on its soil. "Do not make friends with inferior people
(Jews, Christians and all non-Muslims)" (Koran 3:118). “Truly the Pagans (non-
Muslims) are unclean; so let them not…approach the Sacred Mosque” (Koran-9:28)

Therefore, Muslims have an obligation to spread their faith everywhere, cleaning up the
world. Jihad becomes a kind of moral sanitation project, one conducted for the good of
all. For the individual jihadist too, spreading the religion is a way to achieve moral
cleanliness. This is a religion of works, not faith. Even if a believer does a million good
works, he still is uncertain whether he will attain Heaven. There is one exception, one
loophole, to this religion full of rules that damns even its own followers, if their practice
of it is imperfect. If a believer becomes a martyr, a shaheed, (literally, a witness for
Allah) who dies while attempting to kill a non-believer, he will go straight to Heaven and
be rewarded with all those virgins. So a Muslim can be completely sinful his whole life
and buy forgiveness with one act: killing a non-Muslim.

The word “Islam” is incorrectly translated as peace. According to a colleague who is a


native speaker of Arabic and an Egyptian born Christian activist [14], the word Islam
comes from “istislam,” which is the noun form of Mohammed’s command to his victims,
“Submit or else.” The verb is sal-lem, or surrender, which is quite different from salam,
or peace. Following this interpretation, islam was originally a war cry, and not at all a
call to devotion to God. However, the word for “surrender” came to be understood in a
religious context as Islam’s power increased over time. Most likely, both those who
ruled and those were ruled sought a religious explanation as both a pretext and a
justification for the injustices of political domination.

The Islamic calendar begins not with Mohammed’s birth or death, but with his entrance
into Medina – the time when Mohammed attracted enough followers to become a
political entity. Why is this? Medina marks the beginning of Islam as a state, a state that
spreads itself through war. An aspect of Islam that Westerners find hard to grasp is the
extent to which Islam is a political body ruling every minute aspect of life. It is not a
religion such as we are used to, which limits itself to inspiring a private, inner practice.
Rather, it is a political system, shari’a, both overlaid with religious edicts and derived
from religious edicts. The dating of Islam from the time of its military and political
ascendancy in Medina underlines this hard-to-digest fact.

The Koran becomes a self-righteous sword, obsessively and compulsively controlling


every aspect of life – from making war, to going to the bathroom, even to how long a
mother should nurse her child - in every country it conquers. Radical Islam is ruled by a
theology that is an ideology. In our relaxed era this seems strange, yet we must
comprehend this central value for Muslims. Remember a time in Catholic history when
conquistadores murdered legions of Native Americans for Christ (while stealing native
wealth) and when the Spanish Inquisition tortured and killed vast numbers of its own

people for not having a faith good enough or pure enough to match the standard. That
kind of intense drive to conquer others for their ‘salvation’ will begin to let you feel your
way into the mindset of the jihadists. Fortunately, Catholics have moved beyond that
moment – well beyond it.

The Absence of Reason and the Ecstasy of the Suicide Bomber:

What is it like to think and feel as a Muslim warrior does? What is the allure? The
obvious first reply is that the jihadi is doing Allah’s will and he is promised Heaven, no
matter what sins he committed before that would have surely condemned him to Hell, in
Muslim theology. But beyond that, lies an identification with Allah’s omnipotence.

Allah is pure will. He is not bound to govern the universe according to consistent and
observable laws. “He cannot be questioned concerning what He does” (Koran 21:23). In
fact, natural laws are held in contempt from the vantage point of Allah. Al-Ghazali, the
renowned Sufi thinker, denounced natural laws, the understanding of which is the basis
of science, as a blasphemous constraint upon the free will of Allah. Since creation is
understood to the Muslim mind as no more than a succession of miraculous moments,
reason is useless to comprehend it. Belief in Allah trumps everything, especially reason
and critical thinking. Allah himself cannot be described by the laws of nature, according
to Muslims, for that would limit him. So on circular fashion, having destroyed a
scientific and orderly way to approach understanding the world - without any expectation
that the world makes sense - there is only Allah to trust in. Human thought processes are
a waste. On the one hand, that is frightening. Yet on the other, it is incredibly
exhilarating. One can identify with the pure, unfettered-by-reality will of Allah. The
individual feels omnipotent, beyond limitation, way beyond vulnerability, shame or
defeat. At the moment of blowing himself up along with his intended victims, he is led
by his culture to expect the greatest bliss imaginable.

Although there were Muslim thinkers who tried to integrate theology with science and
rationality, there was always tension in their endeavor. Muslim scientists and
philosophers often had their books burned, or their lives summarily ended. By the
fourteenth century, philosophy – which included critical thinking and doubt about the
claims of religion –“had fallen so far from grace [among the Muslims] as to be relegated
to a string of contemptuous paragraphs following the discussion of magic, talismans and
alchemy” [15]. Science was an insult to Allah’s might. Allah’s omnipotence was seen as
so total that he is removed from anything approaching human understanding. The mere
idea that his ways can begin to be understood by the human mind is sacrilege. When the
limitations on reasoning became official, Muslims were officially cut off from use of

reason, which left them in an exciting, yet very dangerous place. One soars in a world
above all limits, all reality, perhaps like a dream, perhaps like psychosis.

You might ask how this identification with an almighty God is different from identifying
with the God of Christian and Jewish understanding. The difference is in the word love,
which is heavily emphasized and repeated in the Christian Bible, occurs over and over in
the compound word ‘lovingkindness’ in the Jewish Bible, yet is extremely hard to find in
the Koran. Certainly there are no commands to love one’s enemy, which is the core
teaching of Christianity. Instead, we see that while forgiveness is permissible, even more
attention is given to justifying taking revenge. “Forgiving those who wrong you is a
good thing. But if you take revenge instead, you will not be blamed. Repaying evil with
an equal evil is allowed” (Koran Sura 42:37-43; 2:194). Nor do we see God presenting
Himself in the form of a vulnerable infant, as he does in the Christ child.

By comparison with Christianity and Judaism, the God of the Koran is aloof, impersonal,
unknowable – and cruel.

Is the jihad’s quest for power and invulnerability linked to the public circumcisions of
young men, performed by some Arab tribes? These circumcisions are done in mid-
adolescence. With the whole tribe watching, the young man’s penis is stripped of all its
skin, and sometimes the surrounding groin is stripped too. No anesthetics are used in
order to test and build character. The young man is watched carefully to see if he
flinches or cries out. If he even whimpers, he is shamed and loses the right to marry his
fiancée, who sits right beside him, scrutinizing his reactions to being tortured to see if he
will turn out to be worthy [16]. How does one survive an ordeal like that without
extreme dissociation? That is, without cutting oneself off not only from painful
sensations but also from emotion, thought and consciousness itself? And doesn’t that
retreat to dissociation remain as a tendency, as a kind of escape from reality that can have
military consequences? One thinks of the historical roots of the word ‘assassin’ and its
etymological ties to the drug ‘hashish.’iv Imagine the freedom to skyrocket unbounded
through the black universe by identifying with omnipotent Allah, unrestrained by reason
and nature.

What else will be limited are the applications of reason to civil society in favor of the
pure will of the caliph, acting in imitation of Allah. It was this issue that Pope Benedict
addressed at his Reagensburg lecture - the role that reason plays in the Catholic tradition
compared to its role in the Muslim tradition: Allah is without reason [17]. Think about
the consequences of that for sanity, both individual and collective. I believe the
consequences are terrifying, both to the Muslim faithful and to those who must suffer
their attempts to impose order on a world that is seen as inherently without a trustworthy
organization. Science is negated and democracy is an insult. Only what is perceived to
be the will of Allah must reign, just like the will of the strongman who is the head of a
local tribe. One thinks back to the original state of politics on the Arabian peninsula –
disorganized, chaotic, the tribes constantly and willfully at war with one another with the
strongest tribe of the moment reigning supreme. Their perception of the cosmos shows
they have not overcome that original disposition to disorder and willfulness. Jihad as a

permanent state of war against outsiders served the function of providing some degree of
internal unity, both collectively and within the minds of individuals[18]. It is not
surprising that the Muslim world we see today is saturated with rumors and conspiracy
theories, given the discouragement of critical thinking and even what psychologists call
‘reality testing,’ that is, checking to see if one’s state of mind corresponds to reality. A
climate of stubborn defense of fantasies which save face, both for individuals and the
culture, is built up by allowing lying, and ennobling it as taqiyya – the art of lying to gain
victory in war, and even in personal relationships. Thus, Muslims have perpetuated a
culture uninterested in distinguishing between truth and lies. Pride and triumph appear to
be all important, even if they have no foot-hold in reality.

Emotional states appear to clank against each other with little awareness of their
inherently conflictual nature. Thus we see Mohammed revered both for his ruthless
prowess in war and contradictorily for his lovability, as we remember an earlier quote
from official Saudi literature, that the Perfect Man is “kind-hearted and merciful” [1, p.
10]. Love is dangerous amid tribes that constantly war. One must marvel at how
precarious and even dangerous the emotion of love was to these desert people; how the
one they most revered is covered in tough spiny thorns of war like a cactus while
producing, as they saw it, a tender flower at his crown.

Mohammed represents an ego ideal for Arabs – that is, the best part of themselves.
Perhaps Mohammed helped Arabs overcome a sense of inferiority towards the Jewish
and Christian civilizations that were more advanced than their own in writing, literature,
governance, art – in short, just about everything that makes for what we know as a
developed society. Without fully understanding the religions he plagiarized, Mohammed
elevated his own vision and himself by criticizing those from whom he borrowed.

When Mohammed’s armies reached the library of Alexandria, they burned it to the
ground.

Conquest, Slavery, and Dhimmitude:

Mohammed’s Conquests:

When Mohammed was in the early phase of building his empire, and was politically
weak, he wrote some verses that spoke of respect for Jews and Christians. He also wrote
some lines promoting kindness and gentleness, which were directed at fellow believers in
order to build up communal bonds while his men pillaged the surrounding communities.

However, this was not to last. When he became stronger and more aggressive, the verses
changed to reflect his new power and greater ambitions. Now the verses speak of Jews
and Christians as infidels who should be killed: "Believers, take neither the Jews nor the
Christians for your friends (Koran 5:51). "Unbelievers are those who declare: 'God is
the Messiah, the son of Mary" (Koran 5:17). The verses from this period abrogate the
earlier ones and they read like a war manual. “And kill the unbelievers wherever you
find them…such is the reward of the unbelievers (Koran 2.191). "Believers, make war
on the infidels who dwell around you” (Koran 9:123). Those would be the neighbors.
"When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield strike off their heads and, when you
have laid them low, bind your captives firmly" (Koran 47:3). Nowhere in the Koran do
we see any verses admonishing against stealing, raping or lying. Nor is there any verse
that commands one to love Allah and love one’s neighbor, or that commands one not to
lie or to covet a neighbor’s possessions. Instead, to motivate his soldiers and draw new
recruits, there is a chapter called “The Spoils” which details how to divvy up the booty.
Mohammed gets 20 percent and the men under him get the rest, including the male and
female sex slaves.

Islam exploded out of Arabia – and before that, out of a tiny spot on the map, Medina –
so quickly as to astonish. Soon, a mere 25 years after Mohammed’s death in 632 C.E,
Muslim forces leapt out of Arabia to create an empire that covered both western Asia and
the Mediterranean. By 700 C.E, Carthage had been conquered and the entire North
African coast, once part of the mighty Roman Empire, had been brought under Muslim
control. At about the same time, Muslims crossed into Spain, and then pushed into India
and the western part of China. Within just one hundred years after Mohammed’s death,
the Islamic empire covered all of Arabia, parts of the North African coast, the Holy Land,
Persia, and Spain. The Muslim conquests surpassed the achievements of Alexander the
Great and even the Roman Empire. In the 200 years from the founding of Islam by
Mohammed, Islamic armies conquered more territory than the Roman Empire did in
2000 years. Eventually they ruled from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. There is
a warning for the present in the speed with which Islam spread. Its wildfire advance
could happen again.

Muslims believe that once they have conquered a place, it always was and always will be
theirs. And perhaps we too have come to think of certain conquered places as
intrinsically Islamic, like North Africa, Turkey, Israel, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq,
but it is important to keep in mind that other cultures once thrived there. Wherever early
jihad went, except for Persia, Arabic became the official language. Beneath it were
crushed many cultures and their languages. To name several: Jews, Samaritans, Berbers,
Kushites (Nubians), Kurds, Hindus, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, and among Christians -
Copts, Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Melkites and Maronites. Pre-Islamic history
was referred to by Muslims as “the age of darkness,” and they refused to speak of it. It
simply disappeared. As a social scientist, I can't help but wonder, with sadness, about all
that was lost. All those eradicated peoples and cultures! If they could be restored, what
would they tell us about themselves and would their presence shake off the hegemony of
Arabic customs with their stifling grip on local cultures and ways of thinking? Perhaps
they would even possess enough sense of a separate identity to break up the exclusive

hold that Islam itself has on the region, and restore their former religions and nations,
before they were culturally annihilated.

In brief, Muslims ruled the known world from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The sweep of
their occupation adds new reason to wonder about where and when the Koran was
written. It is possible that it was written over at least two centuries as Muslim warriors
swept over the known world [6]. As Muslim armies advanced, they acquired and
incorporated words and other non-Arabic elements from the peoples they conquered,
which helped them administer their new colonies. The range of their conquest and the
addition of new terms to Muslim culture and the Koran adds weight to the idea that
Mohammed may have been a symbolic figurehead carrying the hopes and needs of many
people in the form of accretions of confabulated ‘facts.’ By borrowing liberally from the
legends, myths and religious traditions of pagans, Jews, Christians, Hindus, and
Zoroastrians, the Muslims could create one unifying religion to facilitate political rule
over all their subjects. Thus the Koran might have been the product of multiple authors
from different times and places. This would make sense of its obvious borrowings from
other languages, its stylistic contradictions, and its scrambled presentation of ideas.

New soldiers were recruited easily into the advancing Muslim armies with promises of
war-captured booty. As the theology of war evolved, soldiers were also promised
glorious rewards in the afterlife if they died as ‘martyrs’ for the cause of spreading Islam.
It was a win/win proposition. If you live, you get to capture lots of wealth and women.
If you lose, you gain eternal life in a bountiful garden, attended by beautiful virgins,
eager to serve you. You are materially rich, either way. These less than spiritual
inducements swelled the ranks, which helped account for the amazing victories of Islam
over its neighbors. India in particular was a great storehouse of treasure for the Muslim
invaders, since the Hindus stored their considerable wealth in their temples, making for
easy collection. To quote one Amir Timur, who participated in the invasions of India,

My principle object in coming to Hindustan…has been to accomplish two things.


The first is to war with the infidels, the enemies of the Mohammedan religion;
and by this religious warfare to acquire some claim to reward in the life to come.
The other was…that the army of Islam might gain something by plundering the
wealth and valuables of the infidels: plunder in war is as lawful as their mothers’
milk to Musalmans who war for their faith [19].

The rewards for the Hindus? Between 80 million and 100 million of them were killed by
invading Muslims [20] [21], starting in the 11th century and lasting until the 17th century.
The skulls of conquered Hindu men were piled so high they became mountains. Their
widows threw themselves en masse on their husbands’ funeral pyres, in the practice of
suttee, deliberately choosing death by their own hands over slavery or death at the hands
of their Muslim conquerors [19].

Further West, the result of Islam’s march was the destruction of Christianity in the
Middle East, Egypt, Turkey and North Africa. At least 60 million Christians were
slaughtered during the Islamic conquests and half of the Christian population was lost. In

Africa alone, more than 120 million Christians and animists were killed over the last
nearly 1400 years of jihad. About 10 million Buddhists died and Zoroastrianism was all
but eliminated from Persia. Jews became a permanently downtrodden minority
throughout Islam. These numbers come from Bill Warner, head of the Center for the
Study of Political Islam [22]. Approximately 270 million nonbelievers died over the last
1400 years for the glory of Islam. Were you taught this in school? I wasn’t, and I
wonder why not. How do these numbers compare to the Nazi regime? The multiple
Holocausts of the Nazi regime were much fewer in numbers, and lasted only several
years compared to nearly 1400 years.

Can one imagine how large a number 270 million is? That is approximately the size of
the U.S. population around 1960! All those souls gone, under great pain and torture.
Who were these people subtracted from history and what would they have contributed to
our world? Pondering this is like encountering Holocaust statistics and wondering what
new personalities and talents the world could have enjoyed had they not been removed
from us by murder.

As of July, 2009, the number of infidels murdered just since 9/11 is more than 13,600
(http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/ ). Can you name any other religion in modern
times that has killed so many people, in so short a time, just for holding different beliefs?
Making good time in their goal of world wide conquest, just since 9/11 Muslims have
committed terrorist attacks in Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chad,
Chechnya, Dagestan, Denmark, East Timor, Egypt, England, Eritrea, Ethiopia, France,
Germany, India, Indonesia, Ingushetia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Jordan, Iraq, Kabardino-
Balkans, Kenya, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco,
Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Gaza-Palestinian Authority, Philippines, Qatar, Russia,
Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Somalia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand,
Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Arab Republic, United States, Uzbekistan
and Yemen.

The jihadist conquest ruled for over a millennium in Europe, and was only stopped at the
gates of Vienna and the Battle of Lepanto, near Greece. Islam became the largest and
most successful imperial power in history, even exceeding the size of the empires built by
the Romans, British, Persians, and the Byzantines. So it is ironic that Muslims condemn
what they call the ‘imperialism’ of Israel, especially since Israel reclaimed land that had
once been Jewish. The name ‘Judea’ attests to that, as do the innumerable artifacts
uncovered by excavations and the scriptures of the Old Testament. Call it a Jewish
reconquista. However, Islam believes that once it has conquered land, it forever belongs
to Islam, as we see now in its current attempts to take back Spain. Even more alarming
for those who do not want to submit to Islam, this religion teaches that it must take over
the whole world for Allah. Everyone who it encounters will be ‘invited’ to accept Islam
and if they refuse, they either become slaves, or second class citizens, or they die.

So we see that the mantra ‘Islam is a religion of peace’ is almost 1,400 years out of date.
It was only for about 13 years that Islam was peaceful, when it was too weak to make
war. From 622 C.E onwards it became increasingly aggressive. The Koranic injunction

is to cover the Earth with Islam. Slavery is just one means, conquest another. Terrorism
is not new. The very word, terrorism, is used in the Holy Book of Islam. “Cast terror into
the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, maim them in every limb” (Koran 8:12).
It is not the hijacking of a peaceful religion that we are dealing with. Jihad, or holy war,
means fighting or struggling to bring about the conquest of Islam over all, and that is its
traditional meaning. The root word means effort. While there is one usage of the term
that means ‘spiritual struggle,’ it derives from a Hadith believed to be of doubtful
authenticity, and is therefore highly misleading (see the Glossary, p. 35). v Jihad can take
many forms: proselytism, financial control, armed battle, and population explosions.
The purpose is one and the same. The holy obligation of every serious Muslim is to
cover the earth with Islam and to bring Sharia, or Islamic law, into existence everywhere.
"Non-Muslims MUST convert to Islam or they will be killed." (Koran 48:16).

The Islamic world view is built on an extreme duality, and so are its ethics. There is one
ethical code for Muslims and quite another for infidels, who are considered as less than
human. "Muhammad, the messenger of Allah, and those who follow him [Muslims] are
compassionate with one another but aggressive to non-Muslims." (Koran 48:29). "Do not
make friends with inferior people [Jews, Christians and all non-Muslims]" (Koran 3:118).
Remember, according to Muslims, non-believers are the descendents of pigs and apes –
and that is the best of them, the monotheistic Jewish and Christian “People of the Book.”
“So when they [non-believers] took pride in that which they had been forbidden, We said
unto them: Be ye apes despised and loathed” (Koran 7:166) and this sentiment shows up
in many hadiths and contemporary pronouncements. The polytheistic pagans fare badly
too. “O ye who believe! Truly the pagans are unclean; so let them not, after this year of
theirs, approach the Sacred Mosque” (Koran 9:28). This profound contempt for non-
Muslims should be kept in mind when feeling drawn to some of the friendlier verses in
the Koran. They are not meant for you, if you are not a devout Muslim. In fact,
friendship with you is forbidden, except as it may further the jihad. Muslims are aware
that they must lay low and build up their resources until they are strong enough to strike
and conquer, as Mohammed did while building his strength in Medina. Friendship with
infidels may serve that end.

This dualism applies to male and female relationships within Islam too, with the female
being regarded as inherently inferior to the male, and created by Allah to submit to the
male in all things. The infidel woman, then, becomes the lowest of the low. Raping her
is sanctioned by Allah and tradition, and is used as an instrument of war. Rape
humiliates both her and her male kinfolk, breaking their spirit, and demoralizing their
society.

The language of Islam is a good indicator of how it views other religions and peoples.
Dar al harb, the house of war, refers to all infidels while dar al salaam, the house of
peace, refers only to Muslims. Truces with infidels are to be entered into when Muslim
armies are weak and need time to rebuild. They are meant to last no longer than ten
years, and then they must be broken. To cease making war against infidels is considered
a sinful defeat, which dishonors the Muslim. Therefore to atone for the sin and remove
the stain of dishonor, the truce must be broken. It thus becomes the kiss of death for a

non-Muslim to enter into a truce with a Muslim, considering that it not only is it a prelude
to an inevitable war which catches the non-Muslim off guard, but the truce itself actually
hastens the war by setting a deadline on the time allowed to honor the truce
(www.kimo4jesus.org). Thus, a 10 year truce, or hudna, becomes an incitement to the
Muslim to step up his aggression in order to crush the despicable infidel whose presence
he has been tolerating out of military weakness, a very humiliating situation.

Slavery:

Islam reached as far north as Sweden and Iceland, which we know from Islamic coins
dating from the Viking age that have been found in Sweden
(http://kleviusnews.blogspot.com/). Islam may also be linked to a little known aspect of
the Vikings, that is, capturing Europeans and selling them as slaves to Muslims. White
slave girls were preferred, following Mohammed’s tastes as registered in one of the
Hadiths,vi and white women were the highest priced slaves in Mecca [22]. While slavery
was taken as a given in the worlds of the Old and New Testaments, it was never seen as
sanctioned by God. Compare this with the Koran. Allah, speaking to Mohammed, says,
"Prophet, We have made lawful to you the wives to whom you have granted dowries and
the slave girls whom God has given you as booty" (Koran 33:50). In addition to this,
there are hundreds of Hadiths that deal with slavery. Whole chapters of Hadiths are
dedicated to dealing with the taxation, management, sale, and jurisprudence of slaves.
This institutionalizes slavery, and in fact, slavery was an essential part of the Islamic
economy and its mission to spread Islam. Female slaves were used as breeders of new
Muslims and as domestics, while male slaves were used as soldiers who were forced into
fighting for the very people who had taken away their freedom.

Muslim slavers preferred female slaves to males because they were used for the rapid
reproduction of new Muslims. A Muslim man was allowed to own as many female
slaves as he wanted, and all of them were put to use for sex and breeding. Some of the
female slaves were only subjected to mut'ah; this is a temporary rape-marriage designed
for the sexual gratification of Muslim men away from their wives while on raids, a
practice that continues even now, especially in Iran. (The sex slave trade is one of the
most profitable activities in Iran today. The ruling fundamentalists are aware of it and
participate in it. Government officials themselves are involved in buying, selling, and
sexually abusing women and girls [23]).

Although these temporary wives and any resulting offspring were neither provided for
nor welcomed back into their society – they were simply used and dismissed, with a
token payment - they were probably more fortunate than women who were captured as
permanent slaves. Those women chosen to be breeders became Muslim baby factories,
with the mothers having no choice in the religion or ideology of the children they
churned out. When Islamic slavery was more rampant, Muslim missionaries were not
needed because Islam used forced reproduction to spread itself. Think of the untold
voices of those millions of enslaved women, ripped from their husbands, fathers,
societies and religions, and then raped by a stranger, who takes their children away from

them and indoctrinates them into an enemy code. Such a woman loses not only her
family, her freedom, and her right to practice her faith, but even her children, who are
trained to become enemies of all she had held dear. She is forced to be alienated either
from her children or from herself and her own beliefs. Who loves her and who does she
have to love? What are her feelings about the future her children face, knowing as she
does that only full blooded Arab males command respect in Islamic society, and that all
children of non-Arabs are ranked much lower? Even once her children accept Islam,
which is inevitable, their futures as slave children are bleak. The numbers of these stories
must be massive, yet they are not talked about nowadays, out of respect for the image of
Islam.

As for the male slaves, perhaps their fate was worse, especially if they were African.
Black slaves were at the bottom of the barrel. In fact, the Arabic word for black, abd, is
the same as the word for slave. Slaving in Africa began to burgeon with the Muslim
expansion into Africa in the middle of the seventh century. Communities such as the
Nuba had to pay the Arabs a kind of protection money by giving them an annual tribute
of slaves. The male slaves were made into eunuchs in a way that is so cruel I almost
don’t want to tell you. Not only were their testicles cut off but their penises as well.
They were mutilated while en route, in forced marches, to their new masters in foreign
lands. The vast majority of them – some ninety percent - bled to death. The majority of
African slaves sent to Arab lands were worked to death. They were regarded as
expendable economic commodities, according to Serge Trifkovic [2], who distinguishes
their usage from that of slaves in the Americas. American slaves were valued more
because they were not so easily replaceable due to the trouble it took to obtain them. In
other parts of the Arab world, slaves had to fight as foot soldiers in Muslim armies
against their own people, as did the Janisarries. So widespread was Muslim slaving in
South Eastern Europe, that the very word slavery comes from the name Slav, designating
the ethnic group.

Another form of slavery was the devshirme, also known as the ‘boy tax,” practiced in the
Balkans from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Christian boys were enslaved and Islamized
to serve the Sultan, whether as sex objects, clerks or soldiers. The boys were removed
from their families, usually never seeing them again. These human taxes took place
every year, demanding that tribute be paid with thousands of young lives. Similar levies
are being enacted now in parts of Africa.

Islam is built on slavery. Slavery served the function of feeding the armies of Islam,
empowering them to make new jihadis, which is of central importance in Islam. Slavery
also assisted in the quick amassing of wealth, which served a dual purpose. New
converts were attracted to the prospect of getting rich fast while the power arising from
the wealth induced other infidels to surrender out of fear. Slavery was the happening
thing for centuries, the ‘strong horse’ (to use an expression of Osama bin Laden), the
wave of the future. But it was parasitical then as now. Previously, Muslim wealth was
built on slaves and plunder, and now it is built on buried treasure in the sand – oil- for
which other people are willing to pay a fortune, and do all the work of taking the treasure
out of the ground, process, and ship it.

Muslim Arab enslavement of blacks continues to this very day in Africa, especially in the
Sudan and Mauritania. Muslims in the northern part of the Sudan enslave tremendous
numbers of Christians and animists from the southern part of the country. Arabs consider
themselves "the noblest of all races" and therefore exempt from enslavement, in
accordance with Mohammed’s racist views about himself and his own
people. Consequently, racist pride is so strong that Muslim Arabs feel entitled to enslave
blacks, and even those blacks with some mixture of Arab blood feel entitled to enslave
other blacks who do not have any Arab blood. Yet Muslims, professing the ‘purity’ of
the Arabic language and religion, call themselves non-racist and have managed to
convince large parts of the American black population, and others, that this is so. This
privileging of things Arabic is seen in the insistence that the Koran be read only in
Arabic, even though many Muslims do not understand it, since it is not their native
language. It allows Saudi Arabians to import foreign Muslim laborers and to misuse
them horribly – confiscating their passports and then reducing them to near slave labor.
It allows them to make Saudi Arabia off limits to the practice of any other religion even
though it vigorously exports its own religion into other lands, and then demands more
than equal rights for its followers. And perhaps it is one of the factors that makes non-
Muslims refrain from pointing out that the genocide going on right now in Darfur is an
act of Arab and Islamic aggression, tied to basic Koranic teachings. The point I want to
drive home is that the current arrogance and hostility we see from Muslims is nothing
new; it is just a reversion to form after a period of economic and military weakness in the
late nineteenth century and the earlier part of the twentieth century.

Dhimmitude:

What was life like for the infidels who were not put to the sword? They were spared, if
they accepted a second class existence as dhimmis, or ‘protected people.’ The protection,
done under a non-negotiable contract imposed on them, amounted to extortion. In
exchange for being permitted the right to live, miserable beings that they were considered
to be, they had to support the perpetual Muslim war effort. Remember the word
‘miserable.’ It will come up later in a discussion of Muslims attempting to impose a
‘civilization jihad’ on the Western world. Special taxes, called jizya and kharaj, were
demanded of the dhimmis, and they had to be paid under most humiliating conditions.
(The jizya comes from an Arabic root meaning compensation and in fact was an
obligatory payment made as a ‘compensation’ for not being a Muslim, which amounted
to extortion money that had to be paid to stay alive. Kharaj was money collected as the
fruit of labor, whether from the fields or the shops.)

Everything about the dhimmi life was humiliating, which was really the point. Dhimmis
had to express acceptance of their inferiority to Muslims at every turn, from walking
barefoot in the streets, to not being allowed to repair their synagogues or churches, to
having to wear special clothing to announce their degraded status. The yellow star of
Jewish opprobrium was introduced in Muslim ruled Spain. In spite of these hateful
conditions of oppression, Islam has managed – amazingly - to float a myth of Islamic

tolerance, especially in Spain, where it is said to have enjoyed a ‘Golden Age,’ which
does not bear up under scrutiny [24, 25].

Not tolerance, but a psychology of deference was cultivated and demanded throughout
the Muslim world as can be seen in the following passages by Bat Ye’or, a distinguished
scholar who has written extensively on what she calls ‘dhimmitude.’

The law required from dhimmis a humble demeanor, eyes lowered, a hurried pace.
They had to give way to Muslims on the street, remain standing in their presence
and keep silent, only speaking to them when given permission. They were
forbidden to defend themselves if attacked or to raise a hand against a Muslim on
pain of having it amputated. Any criticism of the Koran or Islamic law annulled
the protection pact. In addition, the dhimmi was duty bound to be grateful, since
it was Islamic law that spared his life [26].

The dhimmis are inferior beings who undergo humiliations and aggressions in
silence. Their aggressors, meanwhile, enjoy an impunity that only increases their
hatred and their feeling of superiority, guaranteed by the protection of the law
[27].

We in the West are shocked by the Muslim riots over cartoons, the beheadings of so-
called adulterous women - some of whose adultery consisted of being raped - the public
hangings of homosexuals, and death threats against Islamic apostates, as well as actual
assassinations. But that shows our naiveté and lack of historical knowledge. All these
practices were historical parts of Muslim society when it was stronger, and they are
dictated by sharia, the body of Islamic law made up of the Koran, the Hadiths, the Sunna,
and centuries of Islamic jurisprudence. They are painstakingly documented in the
writings of Ms. Ye’or and others [26, 28, 29]. The rage we are seeing now is traditional
Islamic contempt for infidels and dhimmis. To blame ourselves for it and attribute it to
causes like poverty, is a mistake. As for humiliation as a cause of Islamic rage, Yes,
certainly, but that is so because anything less than supremacy is humiliating to the
Muslim mind, trained as it is to see the West as inferior. Dhimmis are meant to serve
their Islamic masters and to provide for their material needs.

We must understand that the much vaunted Islamic ‘tolerance’ is based on deep contempt
for other religions, not respect. People following other religions are allowed to live
instead of being exterminated as insults to Allah - but they must prove their usefulness to
Islamic rule by furthering Islamic society and by squelching the development of their
own culture.

What Is Our Part In Allowing Ourselves To Be Dominated?

According to Bat Ye’or, the attitudes of dhimmitude develop slowly, sometimes


imperceptibly. People invent myths to replace history because they are terrified to look
at the reality of their situation. Their own values are jettisoned in order to support these
tales and to avoid realizing how confused they have become. Then they struggle to hold
onto these fables, even though they are suffocating under them. The myths come to seem
like the only things that will save their lives. As Ms. Ye’or writes, “Terrorized by the
evidence and teaching of history, those peoples prefer to destroy it rather than to face it.
They replace history with childish tales, thus living in amnesia, inventing moral
justification for their own self-destruction” [30].

If you are surprised by the facts I am relating to you, it might be because academic
dhimmitude demands that the painful history of jihad be ignored, and instead, that
dishonest platitudes be spoken about Islam [28]. Dhimmitude is a learned condition of
psychological and intellectual suppression as well as political subjugation. The proper
dhimmi attitude towards Islam is self-abasement and self-accusation. The same servility
that was demanded in former days of dhimmis who had to walk in filthy gutters to avoid
offending a Muslim and who had to make sure their signs of wealth never exceeded those
of the Muslims around them, now shows up among intellectuals. Today, dhimmis who
get out of line are fired from their positions in academia, the media and other prestigious
positions; they are spurned by other dhimmis who enforce the unspoken code of
deference to Muslims’ desire to avoid criticism and to appear to be superior. Speaking
plainly about the terrifying aspects of Islam is misconstrued as boorish, bigoted and
repulsive. In short, dhimmis do not face their fears honestly but seek to deny them.

In addition, we may be putting up with these platitudes camouflaging evil because we


are ashamed of how our ancestors suffered under the heel of Muslims. If our ancestors
came from Europe, Africa, Asia, or the Middle East, jihad had to have been in their past,
knowing what we do now about Islamic history. Yet it is not talked about. Perhaps, too,
we are simply at a loss to comprehend an ideology so different from ours, one that
despises our Golden Rule, and whose kindnesses and acts of justice are intended only for
fellow Muslims. This is the thesis of Bill Warner, head of The Center for the Study of
Political Islam, who suggests that we do not want to realize how ashamed we actually are
[22]. Perhaps because of shame as well as fear we forget our history and tolerate
impossible lies and manipulations, until the need to actively resist becomes too
overwhelming. This is what happened in the Reconquista of Spain, the repulsion of the
Turks at the Gates of Vienna, and the Battle of Lepanto. Christians faith in themselves as
Christians finally found a resurgence, they pushed back the Muslim invaders, and they
regained their freedom.

The flip side of shame is pride. There are some among us with a need to look down on
people they consider inferior to themselves. They remember only the Islam of the first
part of the twentieth century, a beaten, weak Islam, teetering under Western colonization,
deferential to us. That was an Islam one could pity, and certainly not one to be feared.
Unfortunately, that was only a brief moment in the history of Islam and one that it is

determined to forget – at our expense. Nevertheless, some Westerners excuse or
overlook barbaric acts by Muslims, using the notions of ‘cultural relativism’ and
‘multicultural diversity’ to excuse horrific practices against women and dissidents in
Muslim societies. Through dhimmi cowardice, essential Western ideals such as
intellectual freedom and the equality of women are already being abandoned - it is
considered ill mannered to talk about Islam’s barbaric treatment of women and its bloody
history and theology. Apology, rather than honest confrontation of facts, has become the
intellectually fashionable way to approach Islam. Apologists take seriously the absurd
idea that terrorism is caused by poverty, a notion that barely has legs now that we see that
so many of the terrorists have come from upper middle class families and have been
trained as doctors and engineers. Apologists ignore the actual teachings of Islam in the
Koran and in the mosques of today, as well as its warring history and currently bloody
borders. They let themselves be convinced of some kind of vague guilt towards Muslims,
when their actual guilt is being in dar al-harb, the world of the infidels, and not being
Muslims. They are too easily sold on the idea that it is Western foreign policy that
triggers terrorism, and not a genocidal, jihadist ideology intrinsic to Islam.

Piracy:

Mediterranean piracy was another form of Muslim predation, one glamorized in recent
times by Hollywood films, which strip it of the religious meaning it actually had. From
the time of the Crusades until the early 19th century, Barbary Coast pirates preyed on
ships in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the West African
coast as far north as Iceland. Not only ships were robbed. Europe’s coasts were also
raided, and many captives were taken and sold in slave markets. According to Robert
Davis, between one and one and one quarter million Europeans were captured by pirates
and sold as slaves between the 16th and 19th century [31]. Between 1609 and 1616,
England alone had a staggering 466 merchant ships lost to these pirates from the Barbary
Coast.

Some of the European nations made deals with the pirates. They would pay them
extortion money to avoid being attacked. Notice the similarity to jizya – the taxes that
dhimmis had to pay their Muslim masters just to stay alive. The European powers
tolerated these incursions as a way to keep their rivals in check. The pirates, in some
ways the equivalent of teams of terrorists, had backing from established forces on land.
The captains of the pirate ships pooled their resources, forming something like a
corporation. Pirate ships were also financed and equipped by bankers with one purpose
only, to loot ships and kidnap Europeans. Bankers took ten percent of the loot, and then a

certain amount was paid to the ruler of the Muslim state. This was a highly organized
activity; you might call it state sponsored piracy.

America was hit by the brigands too, and unlike the Europeans, we responded by fighting
back. By late 1793, a dozen American ships had been captured, goods snatched, and
everyone onboard enslaved. In response to this threat, President Thomas Jefferson
authorized the re-formation of the United States Navy in March 1794, with six frigates
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_pirates). Earlier, when Jefferson was ambassador
to France, he met with the ambassador from Tripoli and asked him why his government
raided American ships, even though we had not provoked them. The reply of the
ambassador is very telling of the theological supremacy of the Muslim mindset. The
ambassador's response, as reported to the Continental Congress:

That it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their
Qur'an, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were
sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they
could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that
every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.

We successfully defeated the pirates in two Barbary wars, in 1801 and 1805. Eventually,
Islamic piracy was crushed when England and France attacked Algiers, the capital city of
this piracy, and then went on to colonize northern Africa. Note that it was the initiative
of the United States that led to Europe finally resisting the tyranny of the Muslims at sea,
even though the U.S. was a tiny, weak country, just 30 years old. But the U.S. had a
spirit of liberty that inspired the rest of the free world to act. (Note also that Thomas
Jefferson had a Koran in his library for military purposes. As commander in chief, he
needed to understand the thinking of the enemy of the U.S. in order to defeat it. The last
thing he would have been was a religiously searching ‘student’ of Islam. To say that
obfuscates the reality that Islam was aggressive enough less than two hundred years ago
to have made war on us. Yet this has been claimed by Keith Ellison, a Muslim
congressman who was sworn into office in 2006 on the Koran instead of on a Bible. It
remains to be seen how the inherent conflict between the American Constitution and the
fundamental teachings of the Koran will be played out here.) [Additionally, note that the
French invasion of North Africa was a result of the Barbary Coast’s piracy against French
fleets. The war was started by Muslims, but one would never know that given the
rhetoric of the day alleging that the imperialistic West pounced on innocent Islam for no
good reason.]

“Civilization Jihad” and the Muslim Brotherhood:

So far, I have taken you mainly to Islam’s past. To bring us up to date, the last of the
surviving Islamic empires, the Ottoman caliphate, began to go into decline around 300
years ago and collapsed by 1922. This caliphate was a vast empire which had ruled for
over 600 years. When it was crushed, it was clear that expansionist Islam was soundly
defeated by the West. However, it quickly rebounded. It was brought back to life in
1928 with the founding of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt by the Sufi schoolteacher,
Hassan al-Banna. (Yes, Sufi, as in the Persian poets Rumi and Hafez. Although some
Sufis were mystics, others have been in the forefront of jihadist activities. It appears that
no Muslim sect is entirely separated from that core obligation of Islam.) Al-Banna’s
credo:

We want the flag of Islam to fly over these lands again, who were lucky enough
to be ruled by Islam for a time….Andalusia, Sicily, the Balkans, Southern Italy
and the Greek Islands are all Islamic colonies which have to return to Islam’s lap.
(Flaig, 9/28/2006).

Please remember the phrase, ‘Islamic colony.’ You will soon see how Muslims are
applying it to us.

Working under the Islamic doctrine of kitman or concealment in order to “Islamize” the
country, the Muslim Brotherhood called for sharia law to be established in Egypt to start
with, and then everywhere else. When the Egyptian authorities found out about it, they
banned it. The Muslim Brotherhood became the largest political opposition organization
in many Arab nations, always pushing for a ‘pure’ and expansionist kind of Islam, and
setting itself in opposition to established Arab governments, which wanted diplomatic
relationships with the West, and were somewhat open to democracy. Although the
Muslim Brotherhood’s philosophy of Salafism went on to take many different forms, at
bottom it was a return to a basic jihadist Islam. Some of the branches preached violence,
following the influence of Sayyid Qutb, while other branches advocated – at least
publicly - a non-violent spread of world-wide Islam; but they all agreed on the most
important thing: Islam must cover the globe.

The Muslim Brotherhood has played a leading role in spreading Islamic expansionism.
Osama bin Laden's close associate, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was a member. The Hamas
terrorist movement in Palestine is one of its offshoots. Another top Muslim Brotherhood
leader, Abdulrahman Alamoudi, is serving a 23 year sentence for taking part in a plot to
kill King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia [32]. In October 1981, a Muslim Brotherhood
offshoot group assassinated Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. In the last decade alone,
Muslim Brotherhood branches including Gama'a al-Islamiya and the Abdullah Azzam
Brigades repeatedly attacked Western tourists, killing hundreds and wounding many
more.

Can there be any doubt that the Muslim Brotherhood is a dangerous movement? In Saudi
Arabia, this movement took root as Wahhabism, named for the sixteenth century

preacher, Muhammad ibn Abd-al-Wahhab. Fueled by the failures of pan-Arab
nationalism and by the success of the rival Shiites in Iran who managed to humiliate the
U.S. in the revolution of 1979 by holding 52 American diplomats hostage for over a year,
the Sunni Saudis launched a huge campaign to spread their kind of Islam in the world.
The prestige of the Islamic Revolution in Iran is an insult to the Saudis, something they
need to outdo. The Saudis see themselves as the rightful leaders of the Islamic world
since they are the guardians of its two holiest places, Mecca and Medina. Adding to their
humiliation was the fact that the Muslims of Iran were Shiites, which the Sunnis
considered to be heretics, just one step above infidels. So we have jihadis of different
stripes egging each other on, competing to see who is the ‘holiest’ – that is, who is the
most outrageous and effective in bringing down the infidel West.

To restore their standing among fellow Muslims, and also to deal with internal problems,
the Saudis launched a massive program of proselytism throughout the world. Using the
billions of dollars the West pumped into Arabia for oil, the Saudis built madrassas and
mosques almost everywhere, “Wahhabitizing” the world. Their influence can be viewed
in the film, Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West,
(www.obsessionthemovie.com). It shows Middle Eastern TV newsreels of Arabic and
Farsi speakers screaming for the death of Westerners, as well as training children as
young as three years old to pretend in gory and graphic detail that they are killing us.

The Saudis also launched numerous deadly attacks on the U.S. previous to 9/11, which
did not provoke a strong response from us then, and still do not. Starting as far back as
March, 1977, jihadists have been murdering us on our own soil. Only blocks from the
White House, 12 terrorists seized 134 hostages, of which one was killed and 12 were
wounded. They occupied three building, one of which was the city hall of Washington,

Recently, Islamic rhetoric has included using flexibility and non-confrontational


approaches in order to achieve the caliphate [33]. While it is the goal of every true
Islamist to take over America and “save” it from its impurities, not every strategy is as
violent as Osama bin Laden’s, which some Muslims believe has backfired by causing a
stiffening of national pride rather than an easy surrender.

The “Project” – Soft Jihad:

The other strategy is to take a softer, more gradual approach to an inevitable take-over
using flexibility, deception and stealth. This strategy would increase the Muslim
population by immigration, reproduction, infiltration and conversion [34] until it reached
a tipping point and could vote sharia law (Islamic law) into power, overturning the
Constitution. The Muslim Brotherhood came up with what it calls a “Master Plan” in
1982 for a 100 year assault on Western civilizations, ending in Muslim rule. Two
documents were found attesting to this. The first was found in a raid of the home of

Muslim Brotherhood financier Yousef Nada by Swiss authorities in November 2001, and
is referred to by intelligence officials as “The Project.” It was written by Muslim
Brotherhood spiritual leader Youself Qaradawi and is titled “Towards a Worldwide
Strategy for Islamic Policy.” This fourteen page document written in Arabic and dated
December 1, 1982 coolly lays out a twelve point strategy covering the next one hundred
years to “establish an Islamic government on earth.” The Project details ways to incite
Muslim fervor, as was in fact done with the Danish cartoon riots and the subsequent
month long riots in France, in order to create more soldiers for its civilian army. It calls
for establishing shadow societies in all the lands that Muslims immigrate to, with a full
exploitation of democratic institutions, leading eventually to Muslim ruled Parliaments
and the replacement of the American Constitution with the sharia. Out-breeding the
native populations, winning converts by deceitfully representing itself as friendly and
compatible with democracy, establishing footholds in all the professions and making
themselves appear both safe and indispensable – all these are part of the plan. The
Project advocates secrecy and maintaining an appearance of moderation by avoiding
obvious connections with known terrorist groups. The first document was found just two
months after the horror of 9/11, yet has not made any kind of a dent in the main stream
media. It took an online conservative news magazine, www.frontpagemagazine.com, to
bring it to the world’s attention [35] in May 2006, but it has not been commented on at all
by the mainstream media.

The second document revealing The Project was recovered in America. It is an eighteen
page paper signed by Mohamed Akram, dated May 22, 1991, and bears the title, "An
Explanatory Memorandum: On the General Strategic Goal for the Group." The idea is to
create a parallel Muslim society as a foundation for the ultimate objective: establishing
sharia and overturning the Constitution. After detachedly scrutinizing the American
predilection for doing things in organizations, the plan emphasizes establishing many
different kinds of Muslim organizations in order to give Islam more of a foothold in this
country. While America sleeps, chiding itself for its supposed injustices towards Muslim
minorities, these same minorities are cold-bloodedly working to undermine their hosts
and take possession of their nation. [36]. Here is a quote from the American Project.

The process of settlement [of Islam in the United States] is a "Civilization-


Jihadist" process with all the word means. The Ikhwan [the Muslim
Brotherhood’s word for its members] must understand that all their work in
America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western
civilization from within and "sabotaging" their miserable house by their
hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God's
religion is made victorious over all religions. Without this level of
understanding, we are not up to this challenge and have not prepared ourselves for
Jihad yet. It is a Muslim's destiny to perform Jihad and work wherever he is and
wherever he lands until the final hour comes, and there is no escape from that
destiny except for those who choose to slack [36]. (emphasis added.)

What Americans are faced with now is an invasion and infiltration of our institutions,
coming as a Trojan horse. Jihadists are preparing to use our own hands to destroy our

civilization, which they mock as ‘miserable,’ and to replace it with what they call their
superior one - a culture that has originally pilfered its religion, destroyed all other
religions it has come in contact with, and that despises democracy because they believe it
interferes with surrender to Allah.

Was this second document a weird paranoid fantasy? No, unfortunately not. The Project
passed sufficient legal scrutiny to be entered into evidence in a federal trial and the
defendants did not present challenges in court to its authenticity or veracity. In July,
2007, the government brought a forty-two count indictment against an Islamic charity of
self-styled moderates, the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and
Development, stating that they “provide financial and material support to Hamas.”
Specifically, they are charged by the Treasury Department with funneling $12.4 million
to a designated terrorist group, Hamas, so that Hamas could encourage children to
become suicide bombers. The FBI also charged them with conspiring to infiltrate the
U.S. political system, attempting to change Middle East policy, and to gradually Islamize
America. A great many other seemingly moderate Muslim groups have been named as
unindicted co-conspirators at this trial, proving the effectiveness of the Muslim

Pervasive Infiltration:

What’s hurting us is that they have done such a good job so far. Muslim Brotherhood
supporters make up the American Islamic community's most organized force. They run
hundreds of mosques and dozens of businesses, engaging in influential ventures such as
real estate development and banking. They also helped set up some of the leading
American Islamic organizations that advocate for Muslims, promote Muslims becoming
politically active, and seek to spread Islam. In 1963, the Muslim Brotherhood established
the Muslim Student Association (MSA). Today, the MSA urges the spread of the Islamic
caliphate and jihad. Another organization set up by the Muslim Brotherhood, The
International Institute for Islamic Thought, plans a process of historical revisionism to
erase scholarly records of the past if they are produced by non-Muslims and to replace
them with a ‘history’ favorable to Muslims. If that happened, papers like the one you are
reading would be forbidden. Our own Judeo-Christian and Enlightenment roots be
negated as part of “the age of darkness,” as was done previously to all the great
civilizations conquered by Islam in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Fortunately, this
Institute is being investigated by the Treasury Department for possible funding of
suspected terrorists.

By the 1970s, helped by lavish Saudi funds, the Muslim Brotherhood began to establish
professional organizations which included social workers, science and engineering
syndicates, and Muslim doctors [37]. You will remember that several Muslim doctors
made the news when they participated in terrorist activities, both here and in Britain. In

addition, the Muslim Brotherhood carries on secret weapons training and engages in
counter-espionage activities against the FBI and CIA (www.wikipedia.org).

One of the goals of the Project was to insert Muslim rituals into mainstream America.
This too is succeeding. Now there are publicly funded schools throughout the nation
teaching the Arabic language and hatred for non-Muslims. See:

universities we now have foot-bathing stations that are used only by Muslims. Why are
we making this accommodation to Muslims? Do we have prayer stations exclusively for
Christians or Jews? Even worse, public foot baths are NOT provided in the Middle East,
according to reports from people who have lived in that part of the world. Our
corporations make exceptions for Muslim employees to pray in ways that they don’t
make for our established religions, giving them time off and even days off. Islamic
preaching in prisons is accepted, even though it incites criminals to direct violence
against non-Muslims.

Deception:

Deception was an integral part of the Holy Land Foundation’s activities. Since they
couldn’t commit sabotage blatantly, they established friendly sounding non-profit groups
and charities to camouflage their activities. The U.S. prosecutors who made these
charges cite wiretap transcripts and documents that were revealed in a criminal probe of
the Holy Land Foundation. These are the charges of our FBI and Treasury Department,
and yet the big news media have been downplaying it. The N.Y. Times, Washington
Post, and L.A. Times have barely mentioned it, like good dhimmis. Fortunately,
Investor’s Business Daily has given the trial some coverage, including statements that
these so-called peaceful ‘moderates’ made to each other when they thought we would not
hear. Here is a collection of these once secret statements, now published in the Investor’s
Business Daily article:

Deceive your enemy. Politics is a completion of war. Let's damn America, let's
damn Israel, let's damn their allies until death. Muslims sooner or later will
be the moral leadership of America. Either we do it now or we do it after a
hundred years, but this country will become a Muslim country. I think if we are
outside this country, we can say, 'Oh, Allah, destroy America.' But once we are
here, our mission in this country is to change it. The U.S. should be destroyed.
Osama bin Laden hasn't killed enough Americans [38]. (emphasis added)

I hope you are as shocked as I am. The indicted men had all been very well received by
top government officials, from the Pentagon to the White House. They earned our trust
with smiles and assurances saying, "I am a very moderate Muslim person. I condemn
violence in all its forms. Our religion is against terrorism.”

Now they are convicted terrorists. This was a magnificent deception. (As a side note, one
can hear the phrase, “Let’s damn America” echoed in the later words of Pastor Jeremiah
Wright, “God damn America” speaking to the congregation that President Obama
attended for 20 years. Whether the echo is ‘poetic’ or political can only be conjectured,
at this point.)

Fortunately, some officials in high places understood the threat. A Pentagon Joint Staff
analyst, Stephen Caughlin, has stated that many Muslim groups considered moderate by
the Justice Department and other government agencies are actually linked to the pro-
terrorist Muslim Brotherhood. He adds that they use deception to conceal their true
ambitions [39]. (However, less fortunately, Coughlin was dismissed for writing a
“controversial paper” drawing attention to the problem of Muslim extremists. His
dismissal was called for by a Muslim, one Hesham Islam, a Defense Department aide
who has some influence with Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England. Although
Caughlin, the whistle-blower, was since reinstated elsewhere in the Department of
Defense, the circumstances of his original dismissal remain murky.) The paper he wrote
that got him in trouble is called “To Our Great Detriment: Ignoring What Extremists Say
about Jihad.” Coughlin states that we do not listen to Osama Bin Laden and other
jihadists simply being true to their religion, and that in order to defeat them, we must
understand their beliefs. What is especially alarming about this incident is that a Muslim
in the United States government had the power to cause the dismissal of a patriot who
tried to awaken people to the threat of radical Islam. This is just one instance of the
depth of Islam infiltration into the very governmental agencies that are supposed to be
protecting us.

In general, there is confusion among government officials about how to deal with the
Muslim Brotherhood. Some federal agents worry that the Muslim Brotherhood has
dangerous links to terrorism, while some U.S. diplomats and intelligence officials trust its
non-violent rhetoric and think that working with it could help isolate violent jihadists. In
my opinion, it is not to be trusted since it says very clearly that it seeks supremacy. Its
credo is “Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Qur'an is our law. Jihad is our
way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope (www.wikipedia.org). In spite of the
Muslim Brotherhood’s public repudiation of violence, one of their members was the
blind sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, who was convicted in 1995 of plotting to blow up New
York landmarks.

Emboldened perhaps by a passive response to these obvious threats, an Islamic website


now appears proclaiming it will achieve sharia rule in America in half the time planned
by the Project! A Washington D.C. based cleric, Abdul Alim Musa, boasts that the group
he spearheads will achieve an Islamic take-over in fifty years and establish an “Islamic
State of North America” [40]. The concept makes perfect sense – from a Muslim point
of view – if one realizes that Muslims do not recognize nation states the way we do. For
them, the idea of the ummah, the trans-national body of Muslims, is the more important
population delineator. This is in accord with the Muslim division of the world into the
house of war and the house of peace, depending on the acceptance of Islam and the rule
of sharia. Again, we see the arch imperative of religion for Muslims, and the

supremacist ambitions of Islam. Musa’s ambitions are not empty, since he has
established connections with branches in at least five other cities. Musa’s organization,
As-Sabiqun – or the Vanguard, began in the early 1990s at the Al-Islam mosque in
Philadelphia. Are they talking about a peaceful take-over? No. His group identifies
itself as aligned with Muslim Brotherhood founders Hasan al-Banna and Sayyid Qutb,
and Iranian revolutionary Ayatollah Khomenei.

There is no reason why the Muslim Brotherhood does not fit the definition of a latent
insurgency. According to the new U.S. counterinsurgency manual (FM 3-24), an
insurgency is defined as “an organized movement aimed at the overthrow of a constituted
government through the use of subversion and armed conflict…[in a] protracted politico-
military struggle.” The Muslim Brotherhood, with its links to terrorist groups, has the
potential to do military damage and should be considered a military threat. It is now
twenty five years after the Muslim Brotherhood’s plans were put to paper (that we know
of). However, Homeland Security, intelligence and military officials are just now
coming to terms with this danger, which is still not front page news. Another law that
could be used to protect us, in spite of the bland apathy blanketing our nation, is Section
2385 of the federal criminal code. This states that “whoever knowingly or willfully
advocates, abets, advises, or teaches the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of
overthrowing or destroying the government of the United States or the government of any
State, Territory, District or Possession thereof, or the government of any political
subdivision therein, by force or violence, or by the assassination of any officer of any
such government…shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty
years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any
department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.”

_2385.html.) Considering that this code was in place as late as January 14, 2004, the
punishments for the crimes of treason, sedition and subversive activities. Were they
aware of the supremacist ambitions of the people who attacked us on 9/11? If not, why?

The findings of the Holy Land Foundation trial and the schemes in the Muslim
Brotherhood’s “Project” serve to confirm earlier warnings from blog spots like
www.jihadwatch.com and www.littlegreenfootballs.com. The trial discoveries are also
corroborated by the findings of investigative author Paul Sperry, whose book Infiltration:
How Muslim Spies and Subversives Have Penetrated Washington [41], presents well
researched information about how Muslims are now undermining our police forces,
educational systems, the military, the FBI, the chaplaincy of prison systems, our nuclear
defense facilities, corporate workplaces, and airport checkpoints. For example, before he
was arrested for conspiring with terrorists, Sami al-Arian held a cover job as a professor
at a Florida university. He wrote to his band, “[You] should infiltrate the sensitive
intelligence agencies in order to collect information and build close relationships with the
people in charge of these relationships” [41]. It appears that his plans were well
executed. Sperry details the penetration of Muslim operatives into top positions in the
Department of Homeland Security and the White House staff. This is especially alarming

because the operatives were protected by very prominent and respected politicians until
enough pressure was brought to bear on some of them, who since left their positions.

More corroboration of the effects of the Project are found in Harvey Kushner’s book,
Holy War On The Home Front: The Secret Islamic Terror Network In The United States
[42]. Kushner gives evidence of a vast fifth column, undetected by most. While jihadist
web sites flourish in Arabic, Urdu and Farsi, the English speaking media we rely on do
not translate them and downplay security issues. Police officers find their jobs
impossible to perform because profiling is not permitted, according to Kushner’s
research. A vast network of so-called charities collect money for use in terrorism. Other
money for terrorism is collected by selling a narcotic called khat, or Catha edulis. An
evergreen shrub that grows in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and an
amphetamine like stimulant, it is listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act,
the most restrictive category used by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Very
popular in the Middle East, khat is a dangerous drug, capable of causing violence,
hallucinations, psychosis and suicidal depression. What is worse in terms of national
security, the profits from it are huge and they are used to fund terrorism [43]. According
to Kushner, law enforcement tends to give sellers of khat a pass, since they are Middle
Eastern and are “sensitive” to slights. In this too, the official policy appears to be
appeasement, which is dhimmitude.

Terrorist training camps are now fixtures in rural America. To give just one example, in
upstate New York a camp called “Islamberg” is off limits to non-Muslims. It is a
paramilitary base with firing ranges, obstacle courses, and underground bunkers; sounds
of gunfire and other explosions are heard coming from it all the time. The local residents
are terrified and stay away from it. The members of Islamberg are part of Jamaat ul-
Fuqra, a jihadist organization founded in Pakistan that has at least forty five other similar
camps throughout rural America and two in Canada. The Department of Justice reported
that the Jamaat ul-Fuqra "has more than 35 suspected communes and more than 30,000
members spread across the US, all in support of one goal: the purification of Islam
through violence."

The trainees are mostly former prison inmates who converted to radical Islam under the
guidance of Muslim chaplains (http://blog.americancongressfortruth.com/). Individual
members have been convicted in U.S. courts of such crimes as conspiracy to commit
murder, firebombing, gun smuggling, and fraud. Others are leading suspects in criminal
cases throughout the country, including ten unsolved assassinations and seventeen fire-
bombings between 1979 and 1990, according to a report by Paul Williams, a former
consultant to the FBI on organized crime and terrorism [44]. What is being done about
these camps? Nothing.

The Council on American Islamic Relations (C.A.I.R.) is the most well-known of the
advocacy groups for American Muslims. It has emerged as an unindicted co-conspirator
in the trial against the Holy Land Foundation, is tied to Hamas, and can now be officially
considered as the front group for terrorist Hamas. Evidence in the case put C.A.I.R.'s

founders, Nihad Awad and Omar Ahmed, in close connection with Hamas as fund raisers
and as individual members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestine Committee in
America. C.A.I.R.’s executive director Nihad Awad lied before a Congressional
committee when he testified in 2003 that he had never received any seed money for
C.A.I.R. from the Holy Land Foundation. However, an exhibit at the recent trial shows
that the Holy Land Foundation gave a $5,000 check to C.A.I.R. in 1994, just as C.A.I.R.
was getting founded.

C.A.I.R.’s executive director has publicly proclaimed his support for Hamas and the
group defended the mastermind of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, Sheikh
Omar Abdel Rahman, calling his conviction for conspiring to blow up both the United
Nations building and the FBI headquarters a “hate crime.” Numerous officials from
C.A.I.R. have been convicted and/or deported by the United States for their part in
terrorist-related activities. C.A.I.R. chairman Omar Ahmad revealed C.A.I.R.’s true-to-
the-faith Islamic ambitions when he said in July 1998, "Islam isn't in America to be equal
to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran . . . should be the highest authority
in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth."

C.A.I.R. continues to dhimmify the population, using our right of free speech against us
and demanding a one-way kind of tolerance. We are expected to tolerate Muslims so that
they can be in a position to show us no tolerance: as non-Muslims we are fit only to be
ruled or destroyed, in their eyes. C.A.I.R. has also moved to “legal jihad” as seen in the
recent attempt to sue anybody who dares to follow the government’s injunction to report
suspicious activities to authorities, following the incident known as the “flying imams.”
When airline passengers told the captain about provocative and frightening activities of
imams (Muslim prayer leaders) who were returning from a conference on how to
strengthen Islam, the imams were put off the plane. Then the imams brought law suits
against the airline and its passengers – the John Does on the plane – who simply followed
the law by reporting suspicious activities, which could have averted an airplane hijacking.
Future good citizens who wish to prevent disasters would be squelched by legal jihad,
which would pit them in expensive court battles against an organization that is backed up
by Saudi wealth. The very acronym, C.A.I.R., when spoken aloud implies caring
concern, which has a way of cleverly dispelling suspicions about its negative intentions.

C.A.I.R. has launched a massive public relations campaign to appear harmless and to
fight what it calls “Islamo-phobia.” The word itself makes no sense, since a phobia is an
irrational fear and the fear of Islam is entirely rational. It is for this reason that I said at
the beginning of this paper that I am an Islamo-realist. My fears about Islam are entirely
rational and it would be rational for you to be afraid as well. What do you think our
ancestors felt as some of them were grabbed into slavery and others went off to defend
their homelands at Lepanto, Granada, Vienna, Jerusalem, and countless other places?
Would it make sense to feel no fear regarding an organization that has said, many times,
that it plans to dominate our way of life? If C.A.I.R. wants Muslims to be regarded
without suspicion, they should launch a massive campaign not against non-Muslims but
against the very core of Islam - Islamic supremacy - and its consequent demands for jihad

and the installation of sharia to replace the constitutions of democratically organized
nations. It is absurd that we should let an organization dedicated, in their own words, to
“destroying our miserable civilization” presume to take the moral high road and preach to
us about tolerance and good manners. We should know from history and Islam’s own
doctrines what the outcome will be if we let Islam gain ascendancy. We will be reduced
to servitude, our freedoms in every area of life will be lost, we will be held in contempt
for practicing religion differently than Muslims do, and we will live under a massive
black cloud of barbarism, backwardness and double talk.

Access to our own history has been blocked by politically correct forces in our
educational system. At the college and graduate level, there is deliberate misinformation,
funded by the Wahabis. Ultra-rich Saudi Wahhabists endow universities with billions of
dollars in order to spread ideas that deny radical Islam, undermine American values, and
teach a blind hatred of Israel, our one ally in the Middle East. Departments of Middle
East studies and foreign policy were established with Saudi oil money, much of it our
own money, ironically. Jihad is ludicrously misrepresented as “a sort of yoga”[45, p.
177], and we have accepted that. Our vision has been blurred so that we can not even
define the enemy that has set itself upon us. The brain and central nervous system of
America, its collective academic mind, has been targeted since the 1970’s for infiltration,
at the same time that there was a significant surge in oil prices. The germ of
disinformation about jihad was cultivated in professors and their students, who then
spread it to the worlds of the media, secondary education, government and even the
military. A fake tolerance, based on ignorance, has become the ruling paradigm, and
critics of jihad are marginalized and dismissed as out of step. While the collective mind
of America shakes and trembles with a palsy of uncertainty, our enemy continues their
infiltration. Soft jihad infiltrates education. Whether it is textbooks, curriculum,
classroom exercises, film screenings, speakers or teacher training, public education in
America is under assault.

The Creeping Caliphate:

In short, more and more of our way of life is becoming compromised by the Islamic
intent to replace our democratic institutions with Islamic law, sharia. This is the same
law that the Taliban practices in Afghanistan and the Saudis in Saudi Arabia. It is
seditious and hostile to its core. Is this what we want for our country? An outmoded
concept is that all Islamic hostilities will end if Osama bin Laden is captured. The
ideology of jihad did not begin with him and does not end with him. There are now
droves of other jihadists practicing the same ideology as bin Laden did, many of them
quite independently of him, though he is still an inspiration for multitudes. Other
jihadists, as mentioned earlier, prefer the stealth jihad approach of working their way
through multiple facets of our civilization, reducing it to dhimmitude.

Still another approach is referred to as al Qaeda’s Plan B by Amir Taheri [46]. A


political analyst who writes for the New York Post and whose native language is Arabic,

Taheri warns us about bin Laden’s latest strategies. Based on the ideas of his chief
theoretician, Sheik Abu-Bakar Naji, as found in his new book written in Arabic
"Governance in the Wilderness," the plan is to create local sharia staging grounds for
domestic violence. Taking infiltration to a more intense level, this plan would make life
so terrifying on a daily basis that Americans would have to submit to Islam. One could
expect constant kidnappings from neighborhood schools and workplaces, rapes in malls,
and show beheadings on broad boulevards – all of which would be meant as a display of
Muslim power and American impotence. This is not so far fetched, at least not going by
its success in Europe. There we see Muslim neighborhoods so dangerous that even
police dare not enter. From them issue forth assaults, rapes, car burnings on a grand scale,
and even the torture and murder of at least two young Jewish men (Sébastien Selam in
November, 2003, and Ilan Halimi in March 2006). Europe is well on its way to
becoming Islamicized, leaving America as the sole outpost of freedom, a heavy

Mark Steyn’s witty “America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It” [47].

What used to be innocuously called ‘multi-culturism,’ which many took as a lovely idea -
a host of different cultures all present themselves as interesting in their uniqueness, like a
variety of ethnic foods at a community pot luck - has morphed into something sinister.
Some of the foods on the table are poisonous, at least for us. At the same time, our own
American culture, and Western culture in general, is presumed to be deeply distasteful,
something to be spat out. The only morally correct and palatable culture is whatever is
opposed to American culture, and nothing is more opposed to it than Islam. So Islam can
become – as it had always intended to be – the only acceptable culture. Islam could win
without much of a fight, grinding into the ground our own values, just as it has stamped
out the other cultures around it in the Middle East.

One can think of forest fires. Instead of a huge wall of flame, all concentrated in one
place, there may be many small fires, equally deadly and set by the same arsonist. The
latter is a trickier and more effective way to cause destruction: Instead of a general alert
going out and a huge marshalling of forces, there is reduced concern, even apathy and a
struggle to stay in an emotional comfort zone. After the attacks of 9/11, many Americans
experienced a surge of national pride and anger against jihad. Now, however, there is
wide spread apathy and anger – not so much towards the jihadists – but towards those
who would warn the free world about them.

In addition to the soft sharia of creeping infiltrations, we are still faced with the threat of
sharp sharia, that is, nuclear attacks. Credible evidence from various sources says that
al-Qaeda has nukes in America and is waiting to use them, on several cities
simultaneously, according to Paul Williams writing about what is called the “American
Hiroshima” [48]. Beyond Williams, similar warnings about nuclear attacks have been
issued by Vice President Cheney, Attorney General John Ashcroft, and Homeland
Security Director Tom Ridge. The president of Iran lets us know on a frequent basis
about his intent to rain down nuclear bombs on us. But our response is woefully
inadequate. While the FBI is monitoring some of this situation, it is prohibited from
entering the mosques and Islamic centers where much of the threat is unfolding. Why?

Because they are listed as ‘houses of worship’ and thus become sacrosanct, off limits to
crime control. Federal judges won’t issue search warrants. The State Department and
FBI still ignore their own intelligence and evidence about C.A.I.R. by attending dozens
of the group’s fundraisers as guests and even admitting top C.A.I.R. officials into the FBI
Citizens' Academy. Political correctness trumps reality and survival.

Economic Jihad – Break the Bank: Destroy the West:

Shortly after 9/11, Osama bin Laden ordered Muslims to use economics to
destroy America. He stated, “…Concentrate on hitting the U.S. economy through all
possible means. . . . Look for the key pillars of the U.S. economy. Strike the key pillars of
the enemy again and again and they will fall as one.”

have led to increased guardedness about financial dealings with Muslims. Amazingly,
however, ‘shari’a compliant financing’ (SCF) is becoming quite popular with major
American banks. Even the Dow Jones Company, one of the backbones of American
trading, has a Dow Jones Islamic Market and a Dow Jones Islamic Fund (IMANX).
Expensive seminars are held to misinform American financiers about this new breed of
investment, which is seen as enticingly exotic. These presentations are not factual. SCF
is presented as safer than the American finance system by protecting against chains of
collapsing debts, such as with sub-prime mortgages. The Islamic claim is that it is
interest free. But in actuality, SCF actually uses a complex and obfuscating set of cover-
ups for what amounts to unregulated, non-transparent usury. One of the risks inherent in
these shari’a instruments is that they make liquid assets illiquid, which could cause even
more of a mess than the recent sub-prime mortgage fiasco. SCF may be safe for the
Islamic ummah, but it is not safe for the non-Muslim investing community, or for non-
Muslim corporations. Property can be seized by Muslim states, as it was in 1980 when
Saudi Arabia appropriated Citibank [50].

Deception is used to induce respect and cooperation in the Western mind. SCF is
presented as ‘traditional Islamic finance,’ implying it is as old and time tested as the
religion itself. Actually, it was invented by the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1920’s and its
stated purpose was to create an economic tool to pry open the political armor of the
Western world.

SCF calls itself “ethical investing.” While it avoids investing in industries involving
pork, if that is your definition of moral behavior, the rest of its ethical claim is a scam.
When non-Muslims think of ethics, we mean things like feeding the poor and providing
medicine for the sick, regardless of religion or ethnicity. Islamic ethics, however,
involves zakat, or charity intended only for other Muslims. Zakat always includes
mandatory donations to the world wide spread of Islam, including the use of terrorism.
In fact, many top SCF advisors in America have direct ties to terrorist organizations [49]

[51] [52]. Don’t forget, this is shari’a we are talking about, and the commitment is
always to jihad. Koran 61:10-11, “Strive for the cause of Allah with your wealth and
your lives....” and Koran 49:15, “(true) believers are only those who…strive with their
wealth and their lives for the cause of Allah.” The zakat can occur either as direct funds
to suicide bombers to make the blood lettings possible or as support for the family
members left behind. One might say that zakat turns murdering civilians into an industry,
with definite material rewards for the participants. As we recall the collective enterprise
involved in buccaneering, we see similarities.

Sovereign wealth funds are state-owned investment funds made up of financial assets
such as stocks, bonds, property and other financial instruments. Right now Middle
Eastern sovereign wealth funds make trading only with Israel off limits, but they have the
power to expand that boycott to anyone or anything they want. According to Rachel
Ehrenfeld in America for Sale [53], they are growing at a rate of 26.7%, outstripping the
growth rate of Western banks. Can you imagine the havoc that could be wrecked on us if
they boycotted trade with the US? Keep in mind that the major shari’a finance
institutions are in the oil rich Persian Gulf states – the same states that fund Wahhabi
teaching and terrorism throughout the world, the same states that we enrich with our oil
money, while draining our own accounts and devaluing our dollar.

A look at the timeline of world oil market events shows a steady pattern of increases in
the price of crude oil in response to the falling value of the dollar.

2005%29). And what has contributed in large part to the declining value of the dollar?
The rising price of oil! The more our dollar is devalued, the more the price of crude oil
is raised, in apparent justification by the Muslim states. Inexplicably, this pattern of
dhimmi-like submission to economic draining by Muslim states determined to overthrow
us has been going on since at least 1970, almost forty years. Have we been seduced with
a smile and a falafel? An alert State Department would have realized with the rise of the
Muslim Brotherhood in 1922 that Islamic states are potentially hostile again, just as they
were in Thomas Jefferson’s days of the Barbarry Coast pirates. And they would have
advised a program, even then, of developing alternative energy sources. Instead, we have
been asleep for nearly a century and the State Department still appears to be willfully
ignorant of Islamic history and core Islamic texts.

The more of our money the Wahhabi states get, the more they have to spend against us.
They can finance fundamentalist madrassas, both in our own country and worldwide;
they can undermine our economy by weakening our currency with inflated oil prices; and
they can buy up our corporations, universities and media, which then gives them the
power to brainwash our intelligentsia. The simplicity and brilliance of this financial coup
is similar to that of using only box cutters and our own airplanes to bring down the World
Trade Center.

In a word, although it looks like shari’a finance offers high growth possibilities (all those
oil profits drained from one’s own oil addicted nation can look very attractive), it is really
poisoned candy. While an individual investor’s profits may grow, so does world wide

shari’a, which means the possibility of the imposition of oppressive Islamic law. With
jizya, the special tax imposed on non-Muslims in order to support the ongoing jihad, one
stands to loose all the profits made by collaborating with shari’a finance. Historically,
when Islam dominated, dhimmis were taxed exorbitantly, the point being not only to
exploit them for the benefit of the ongoing jihad, but to break their spirit and their ability
to mount an effective resistance. Under the humiliation of dogmatically inflicted poverty,
and not just of one’s own family but of one’s whole religious group, hope of regaining
freedom and power fades. Conversions to Islam grow. Opportunistic business leaders
and officials make financial deals with Muslim powers and thereby further open up the
gates of the city to infiltration.

Those gates have already been opened wide in Europe, and often by greedy, corrupt
officials as Bat Ye’or discusses in Eurabia [28], the new name for the Muslimized
continent of Europe. As Mark Steyn writes in America Alone: The End of the World As
We Know It [47], a devitalized Europe has let itself become overpowered by angry
Muslim immigrants who have no intention of integrating into the existing civilization,
sure as they are that it is intended to fall into their deserving hands, even as they sit at
home and collect welfare benefits, waiting for its collapse. This, of course, is what the
jihadists have in mind for America too, once Europe becomes sufficiently weakened.

Jihad Against Free Speech - Muzzling Islam’s Critics:

Do you remember hearing about how the slave owners of the Deep South
prevented their slaves from learning to read? They were afraid that reading would
awaken a spirit of questioning authority, strengthening the natural desire for liberty. In
the same way, our prospective Islamic masters are afraid of our questioning minds, and
what we might find out about what they have in store for us. In a clever move to keep
their hand hidden, they have instituted a campaign of suppression of free speech, one of
our inalienable First Amendment rights. This was laid out in the Muslim Brotherhood’s
master plan, The Project described earlier, which strategized using our Constitutional
system and open society against us in a concerted effort involving infiltration and
propaganda.

Utterances that are correctly critical of Islam are now to be relabeled as ‘hate speech’ and
‘Islamo-phobia.’ Never mind that Muslims do a plethora of things that are actually
hateful, they are not to be criticized. And why not? The Muslim claim to protection is
that they are a victimized minority, yet their absence of self-reflection and accountability
comes from their conviction that they are meant to rule the earth. In their minds they are
masters, unfairly forced into a non-dominant position. As such, they do not have to
question the fairness with which they treat others. And, as the natural masters of the non-
Muslims, they believe they are due the deference of silence and the absence of criticism.
While non-Muslims consent, by and large, to the suppression of their own free speech,
jihadists are permitted to preach hatred and destruction in their mosques towards

Christians, Jews and the American way of life, including our Constitution. They have
vowed to use our democratic practices against us, and we, sad to say, are letting them.

Muslim demonstrators called for Geert Wilders to be killed after the release of his film
Fitna which pairs passages from the Koran with documentary footage of Islamic
brutality. Demonstrations are also staged against the innocent remarks of Pope Benedict
VI, and a nun who dedicated her life to serving in a hospital in a Muslim country is shot
in the back and dies. Ayaan Hirsi Ali wrote two books opposing Islam and a screenplay,
Submission, criticizing Islam’s treatment of women. Her artistic partner, Theo van Gogh,
was murdered because of the film and she was told she was the next target. She now has
to live underground. “Cartoon rage” riots ruled in Europe and the Middle East after a
Danish illustrator drew Mohammed with a live bomb in his bonnet. The Danish embassy
in Pakistan was bombed and many were killed and wounded. The fifty seven nation
Organization of the Islamic Conference held a conference in Senegal warning the world
not to cross a ‘red line’ by attacking ‘the image of Islam,” and then it set up an American
lobby to enforce their demands for unfree speech. The United Nations Human Rights
Council moved to forbid criticism of genital mutilation, stoning and child marriage, all
integral to the proper practice of Islam. This would require deep changes to the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, setting a very dangerous precedent. In Canada, Mark
Steyn and Ezra Levant faced law suits for bringing forth material found ‘offensive’ to
Muslim sensibilities. This depressing list could fill pages, but I think I have suggested to
you that our civil liberties are being threatened and we are being defanged and declawed,
just as we need all the intellectual armament we can muster for the battle of our lives.

In an inspiring turn of events, Rachel Ehrenfeld fought back successfully after being sued
for defamation by a jihadist who objected to her portrayal of him in her book, Funding
Evil: How Terrorism Is Financed And How To Stop It [54]. In her defense and to protect
future counter-jihad authors, a bill was passed in New York State called the Libel
Terrorism Reform Act and a similar bill is under consideration on the national level. May
more such legislation emerge!

What Is At Stake:

We could lose the United States of America. The Muslim Brotherhood is waiting in the
wings, with a name already chosen for their prize booty. Their new country will be
called the United States of Islam. We could lose Israel if America continues to have

weak, confused leadership. America and Israel are in a reciprocal relationship with each
other. The weakness of one weakens the other, and conversely so concerning their
strength. If Israel is lost, jihadists will be emboldened and their terror reign will be
stepped up. America will lose its one ally in the Middle East and jihad will have a new
staging ground for its rockets. Our demoralization would be enormous since Israel is
the seat of our Judeo-Christian religions, and they are the inspiration for our ethical
values. Indeed, they are the inspiration for our very civilization. It would be the
crowning achievement of Muslim civilizational jihad to destroy the root of our
civilization – Israel. Also, one can reasonably expect an unleashing of the demons of
anti-Semitism that are barely kept under wraps now. Jews worldwide will feel threatened
as the level of hatred rises and their only refuge, Israel, will have been lost. Non-Jews
with anti-Semitic tendencies will be given compelling temptations to darken their souls
with a bestial irrationality, destroying their character even as Jewish lives are destroyed.

If the caliphate succeeds, we are facing a new Dark Age of unlimited duration. Western
civilization and our own great country would become mere memories, and banned ones at
that, just like the once great civilizations mentioned earlier.

If this is not what we want, we must take immediate action. No one else will do our work
for us. Both American and Israeli leadership needs to study the theology and history of
the Muslims who attack them. This they have not done, preferring to fool themselves –
and many of us – by calling Islam a “religion of peace” and letting themselves become
tricked by insincere promises of peace. We have to investigate for ourselves what the
true nature of our Islamic enemy is. I believe I have demonstrated in this paper that it is
savage, supremacist, imperialistic, racist, and contemptuous of us. Other claims it makes
are similarly false. It is NOT an Abrahamic religion, along the lines of Judaism and
Christianity. It is a belligerent way of life with jihad at its center, jihad meaning the
imposition of Islamic values on the rest of the planet, whether by the sword, or the radio
advertisement, or the rapid production of babies. As Islam stands now, there are real
problems with welcoming it into our democratic way of life. Islam at its core distrusts
and despises freedom, individual rights, and democracy because they do not promote
submission to Allah and Islamic law, which are its primary values. Islam so distrusts
human nature that it needs to snip off body parts of women as well as intellectual and
spiritual parts of both men and women to render than ‘calm’ and ‘peaceful.’ America and
the West in general still do not recognize how different Muslims are from us, and that
they are driven by values that we have not so far allowed ourselves to understand
regarding its mission to cover the world with itself. We must resist the careless and
politically correct seduction of letting ourselves be told that Islam is basically a peaceful
religion, or thinking that by offering Muslims material comforts and friendliness we can
buy off the thrust of their ideology. Although our Constitution allows the free practice of
religion, we must realize that Islam is a hybrid of religion and totalitarian government,
which would prevent the free practice of any other religion.

Islam has not been hijacked by extremists. It is conceptually and historically warlike. To
deny that is to practice dissociation and make-believe. If Mohammed were alive today,
he would not only endorse Osama bin Laden, he might actually be bin Laden. There are

peaceful Muslims, who by temperament, local culture or lack of exposure to classical,
true teachings of Islam do not desire at the moment to make war on us. Their peaceful
disposition needs to be noted. This can change, however, as jihadists try to persuade
them to follow a purer kind of Islam. You might object that I am over-emphasizing
Islam’s violence. However, to those who grew up under Islam’s heel and went on to
reject it, violence is the very nature of Islam.

Brave Muslims and Middle Easterners Who Are Committed to Peace:

A group called “Muslims Against Sharia” criticizes Islam for the same reasons you will
find here in this paper, and they call for a deep reform that removes all the supremacist,
aggressive and controlling verses from the Koran, as well as a new attitude of taking
responsibility for the religion’s shortcomings (http://www.reformislam.org/). Wafa
Sultan is a psychiatrist who grew up in Syria, became disgusted with Islam, immigrated
to the United States with her husband and has appeared in videos that are rocking the
Internet with her daring denouncements of the evils of Islam [55, 56]. She is currently in
hiding after a fatwa was issued against her and her family. Walid Shoebat is a former
Palestinian terrorist who came to the States, converted to Christianity, and has since
spoken out frequently against the insanity and hatefulness of his former way of life,
comparing Islamic fundamentalism to Nazism [57] [58]. He too receives constant death
threats.

Brigitte Gabriel is a Maronite Catholic who survived the Lebanese civil war by dodging
bullets and hunkering down in a bomb shelter for the better part of her adolescence. She
escaped to Israel, where she was amazed to find a people committed to compassion, even
against those who tried to kill them. When she got to the States, she wrote a book about
Islam called “Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America” [29],
and started a national group to warn Americans about Islamofacism and to organize them
against it: www.AmericanCongressForTruth.com. A second book by Brigitte Gabriel
“They Must Be Stopped: Why We Must Defeat Radical Islam And How We Can Do It”
[59], provides strategies for this difficult battle. Nonie Darwish is the Egyptian daughter
of a high ranking ‘martyr’ who died killing Israelis. She fled her native land to come to
America, where she became a Christian. She denounces the Islamic enemies and critics
of the West as pirates who want, “Not to blend in, but to rob those democracies of their
soul and ruin the value system and culture that made them great" [60]. She also hosts a
web site called www.ArabsForIsrael.com, and has an article calling for “An Islamic
Reformation”[60] and a book about her experiences “Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I
Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror”[60] Her second book
details the horrors of life under shari’a, especially for women [18]. Irshad Manji is a
Muslim-Canadian lesbian with a best selling book, “The Trouble With Islam Today.” She
insists that Islam has to be dug up by the roots and reformulated into a genuinely
peaceful, woman-friendly and Jew-friendly religion [61]. Ibn Warraq is the pseudonym
of an extremely accomplished and prolific scholar born to a Muslim family, whose
ground-breaking critiques of Islam have inspired many other writers [6]. Kamil Solomon

now hosts a web site, www.kimo4Jesus.org., devoted to warning people about the
dangers of Islam after he escaped his native Egypt where he was tortured for preaching
the Christian gospel. Authorities destroyed his doctoral dissertation which would have
exposed the very unholy roots of Islam. Ayaan Hirsi fled her native Somalia for the
Netherlands where she rose to prominence as a counselor to abused Muslim women and
as a member of Parliament. She has two books out exposing Islam’s evils and can be
seen on numerous videos on www.YouTube.com. She has had to flee both the
Netherlands and the U.S. because of fatwas issued against her life. However, she and
Wafa Sultan are not unique in their imperiled status. All the heroic souls mentioned
above are putting themselves at risk on a daily basis in the service of liberty and
protecting Americans.

Fighting Back:

The Value of Honest Speech:

When Islam’s own children denounce Islam as insane and vicious how can non-Muslim
apologists for Islam continue with their self-deception? For example, Faith Freedom
International, which is composed of Muslim apostates, declares that “Islam induces hate
backed by lies. Muhammad was a terrorist by his own admission,vii”and they urge others
to free themselves from what they call its ‘immorality’
(http://www.news.faithfreedom.org/index.php?name=Sections&req=viewarticle&artid=2
&page=1). All of these noble men and women receive constant death threats for
speaking their truth even though it ‘offends’ the feelings of Muslims. To insist that Islam
is a ‘religion of peace’ is to undermine their message – for the sake of a politically correct
fantasy and delusion. Given such strong denunciations of Islam from those who know it
intimately and are risking their very lives to speak out against it, does it make sense for
citizens who want a free world to offer refugees from Islam only politically correct
whitewashed comments? That devalues the sacrifice they are making by speaking out for
freedom. By valuing their warnings, we can uphold the very values that have made
America great.

Some say we should wait and hope for the ambiguously silent Muslims - those who do
not denounce the evils of Islam - to save us. But I believe this is not a valid option.
Many of them are sitting on the fence, waiting to see which side will be stronger, and
then join with it. All are under a cultural command to support jihad, and if they fail to
comply, they can be killed or at least ostracized by other Muslims. They are told they
will face the wrath of Allah in the hereafter if they shirk their duty. While there are

Muslims of good heart who may not want to dominate others, their position vis a vis the
jihadists, is not yet strong. They can be overpowered both physically and theologically
by jihadists who are in a position to tell them that they are not being true to Islam if they
do not join the jihad. Perhaps one day they will become strong enough to reform Islam
and tear out the hate filled verses of the Koran, but that day is not here now. Dhimmitude
appeasement by denying its horrors is no help to the apostates, moderates and oppressed
women who suffer under fascistic Islam. Indeed, if they are true refugees from Islam,
they are looking to us to be strong enough to protect them and maintaining our strength
needs to be our priority rather than avoiding offending a jihadist Muslim. Accusations
that it is not “charitable” to expose the wrongs of Islam miss the mark. To the contrary, I
believe it would be uncharitable to back off from making just such criticisms, much like
refusing to call the Nazi regime evil for fear of offending Hitler or his followers would
have been uncharitable to those caught up in its web. While individual Muslims may be
very fine people – in so far as they do not buy into the core jihadist ideology – it is the
fascistic aspect of this movement that must be denounced.

Psychological Preparation for Resistance:

Is there anything we can do? Yes. To begin with, we need to let ourselves feel an
appropriate fear and anger. Our first step is to speak honestly and clearly about the
problem, without fear of being labeled bigots or “Islamo-phobes.” In the words of Bat
Yeor, “The war will be won if we name it, if we face it, if we recognize that it obeys
specific rules of Islamic war that are not ours; and if democracies and Muslim modernists
stop justifying these acts against other countries” [28]. My purpose in this paper has been
to open up a level of thinking and discussion based on real talk about a real threat, and to
encourage each one of you to take responsibility for the preservation of our liberty.

Resist sentimentalizing Muslims or feeling guilty for having suspicions about them. Use
critical thinking when presented with a view of Muslims as victims. Victimhood is used
by jihadis as a launching pad for aggression, and is usually a complete whitewash of the
actual history of Islam. Examine yourself for prejudice – against Christians, Jews and
American values. These are the truly endangered ones. Examine yourself also for
automatic assumptions that all people and cultures are alike and all want the same thing.
You will never understand jihad if you hold onto that belief. Preemptively meet the
challenge of being called an “Islamo-phobe” by calling yourself an “Islamo-realist.” In
the words of the great Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu, we must ‘know our enemy’
and know ourselves. Our enemy’s strength is his determination and ruthlessness. Our
weakness is our inability to believe anyone would be willing to fight that hard, and our
own laziness, softness and alienation from our national values. Our strengths are our core
goodness, our numbers, superior technology and organization, and the dedication of a
handful of patriots who are willing to do everything they can to wake up our incipient
rage and stop jihad.

We need to believe in our own values, as freedom loving Americans and as people of
religions other than Islam, or in fact, no religion at all. We can also continue the work of
teaching ourselves about the theology, values, history and practices of Islam, and as

citizens we can speak out about it, demanding politicians who will not be deceived by
Islam and who will take measures to protect our values and our way of life. If we
understood Islam seriously as the lethal fascist menace that it is, we would demand that
our politicians take different actions regarding our borders, profiling, mosque monitoring,
security clearances, and trade agreements with nations that sponsor our killers. Jihad has
many faces and we must be ready to fight them all. The double standard of allowing
Muslim religious practices in public places, many of them tax payer funded, while not
supporting those of other religions, needs to cease. We must hasten to become energy
independent, so that our wealth does not flow into countries that use it to plan our demise.
In addition to drying up petrodollars, we need to understand the new reality of sharia
finance, and how it is used as a tool to undermine our economy, and our civilization. Our
nation’s disastrous economic picture, with much more money flowing out than coming
in, needs to be reversed, as well as outsourcing our a great deal of our jobs and
manufacturing. Laws need to be passed criminalizing the seditious talk festering openly
in mosques.

Actions You Can Take:

Develop your awareness that radical Islam is radically different from the value systems
you are familiar with. Through self-education, using the bibliography provided by this
paper as a beginning, discover the how different Islamic beliefs and goals are from what
you had imagined. Organize study groups to learn the true history, theology and
intentions of Islam.

Network with other counter-jihadists in order to grow in courage and in your conviction
of rightness and power. ACTforAmerica.org is the largest counter-jihad group in

Understand that the Islamic war against Western civilization has a multitude of fronts.
Find the one that matters most to you and become active in fighting it.

Report suspicious activities that you see to the police. Make accurate notes and take
photos. If your documented proof of dangerous activities does not get an appropriate
response, complain to police captains, and to local newspapers.

Talk to neighbors and see who can give you support, now and in times of immediate
danger. Prepare to defend yourself and those around you.

Write letters to the editor and call in to talk radio shows.

protective actions as the following:

• Teach the history and theology of Islamic jihad and make resisting it the
highest national priority.
• Increase profiling of Muslims and Arabs
• Monitor mosques: use hidden wires, spies, whatever it takes
• Train patriotic Americans to translate Middle Eastern languages
• Increase the surveillance of suspected terrorists
• Deport suspected terrorists
• Tighten border security
• Create and sustain military tribunals
• Develop alternative energy sources and decrease dependence on Arab oil
• End the reign of political correctness and multiculturalism
• Stop giving taxpayer money for Muslim schools or forced Muslim prayer
or other practices within public schools
• Do not accommodate Muslim practices that restrict our freedoms
• Silence any teaching of hate and intolerance against our country
• Remove jihadist Imams from the prison systems
• Show pride in American values: Demand that Muslims prove
their loyalty to America if they are going to be allowed to remain here.

Glossary

Dar al Islam - The House of Islam, the place where sharia rules. The distinction is
political rather than religious. If an area has a majority of Muslims but does not
have sharia, then it is Dar al Harb, even if all the Muslims were to practice their
faith. Dar al Islam is a political rather than a religious term, tied to the core
concept that Islam must rule the Earth.

Dar al Harb - The House of War, the place not yet ruled by sharia.

Dar al Salaam – House of Peace, the place where Islam reigns, peace meaning
submission to the multitude of governance rules of Islam, the political entity.

The Hadith – Commentary on the Koran, necessary for understanding because the Koran
does not provide contexts for its various scenes and statements. (plural – ahadith,
or hadiths in English.) Although there are various commentaries, the hadiths of
Muhammad Ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (810-870) is believed by Muslims to be the
most authoritative. They provide information on Mohammed’s opinions about
many aspects of practical and religious life. Supposedly, scribes noted
Mohammad's utterances on correct Islamic behavior which they wrote on bones,
pieces of rock, parchment and papyrus. However, no archeological evidence of

these writings has been found, inviting speculation that Mohammed was not an
actual historical figure but an invented figure-head.

Hudna - A temporary truce, meant to last only as long as it takes to establish physical and
military supremacy. This is often mistaken by non-Muslims for a lasting truce,
bringing about much surprise when it is broken. Muslims consider it a sin to sign
a peace treaty with a non-Muslim unless he is doing it to gain time to build up his
strength for a new attack. To absolve the sin, the Muslim is compelled to attack
the other party as soon as possible. The Muslim is permitted to take advantage of
the treaty by surprising his enemy and catching him off guard. Thus, to enter into
a peace treaty with a Muslim is to ensure new attacks, the exact opposite of what
the non-Muslim expected. An example of this is seen in the Oslo peace accords
in Israel and the waves of suicide and Kassam bombings that followed the ‘peace’
agreement.

Jihad – literally, effort or struggle. In usage, it means and has always meant the struggle
to advance Islam, whether by the sword, demographics, economically, legally, by
the pen, in or any other way. There is one usage of it meaning ‘spiritual struggle,’
but that derives from a Hadith believed to be of doubtful authenticity, and
therefore not especially important. It is also very misleading. See endnote v. for
a more detailed explanation. Jihad is considered the most sacred duty of
Muslims, and is also used as a boy’s name. The Koran promotes the use of
terrorist tactics to spread Islam (8:12) and promises that Muslims who die for
Allah will be rewarded by being able to enjoy sex with 72 fair complexioned
virgins in Paradise.

Kafir - An unbeliever, or infidel, to use a non-Arabic term. There are two kinds of kafirs
(plural is kuffar). People of the Book, Jews and Christian, are given some respect
as monotheists, even though they are called “sons of pigs and apes.” Polytheists,
however, are held in even lower esteem.

Kitman - Deception involving mental reservation, a kind of holding back. It is used


broadly to mean a less than full disclosure.

Koran – The Holy book of Islam, believed by Muslims to be dictated by the angel
Gabriel to Mohammed, who is said to have been illiterate. Critics see the Koran
as derived from bits and snatches of other religions, primarily Judaism and
Christianity, but also Zoroastrianism, all of which rest on a pagan, moon-God
foundation native to Arabia. The Koran is organized into chapters called surahs,
which are arranged not chronologically but in terms of length. The longest
chapters are the first in the book. The later verses, dispersed throughout, abrogate
or nullify the earlier ones.

Mecca – a city in Arabia where Mohammed was born and grew up. It is the site where he
wrote his early verses, which advocate tolerance of other religions. That was

because he had no political or military power at the time, which changed when he
went to Medina.

Medina – the city in Arabia where Mohammed became powerful because of backing he
received from his dead mother’s tribe. Now his verses become supremacist and
he wages wars to force his beliefs on other people.

Shaheed - a Muslim martyr, held in highest esteem and promised a glorious reward in
Heaven. A shaheed is a soldier who spreads his faith by the sword. Compare this
with Christian martyrs who imitate the love and passion of Jesus, even submitting
to torture and death in order to spread the Christian faith. Every Muslim man,
woman, or child whose death came about – directly or indirectly – through the
actions of the enemies of Islam is a shaheed. Actively seeking a martyr's death
(istishhad) is especially laudable. A shaheed can win salvation not only for
himself but for up to 70 members of his family. Imagine 70 fear and guilt ridden
relatives putting pressure on one member of their clan to get them out of Hell by
blowing up the people they consider religiously impure!

Shari’a - the body of Islamic religious law. There is no separation in Islam between
government and religion, so the religious writings of Islam are the basis for its
laws. Shari’a determines almost every aspect of life, from politics, economics,
banking, business, and contracts, to family, sexuality, hygiene, and social issues.
These laws vary from place to place, but they result in such things as a Canadian
girl strangled by her father for not wearing a veil, a Saudi woman sentenced to
receive 200 lashes for the ‘crime’ of having been raped by a gang of men, and a
British school teacher narrowly escaping death in the Sudan for allowing her
young students to name a teddy bear Mohammed. Other aspects of it insure
second class status for non-Muslims, and strict punishment for Muslims who
question the religion, or worse yet, leave it. Since the whole point of shari’a is to
enforce obedience to Islam, intolerance for other faiths, and the supremacy of
Islam over the rights of the individual, it is totally incompatible with Western
democracy and the American Constitution.

Sira - The life of Mohammad is known as Sira and is believed by Muslims to have been
lived in the full light of history. However, there are historical and archeological
reasons to doubt its veracity (see notes on the Hadith).

Sunna – A compilation of Mohammed’s actions, taken as a model for human behavior. It


contains or suggests the laws of behavior for Islamic society, and is thought by
some Islamic scholars to be divinely inspired or practiced under Mohammed’s
eyes.

Taqiyya - Deliberate dissimulation. In broad usage, deception in war. The term


originated with the pretending done by Shia’s when they had to live under Sunni
domination. Now the term is used by both Shi’a and Sunni as a legitimate tactic

to achieve ideological and political ends. Most pointedly, taqiyya is used when
pretenses are made of benign moderation by Muslims who actually have a hidden
agenda of wresting control of a society and dominating it with Islamic law.

Ummah – The collective body of Muslim believers, which transcends national


boundaries. It is important to keep in mind that identification with the ummah is
ultimately more important to many Muslims than identification with their own
nation state.

Zakat - Islamic charity, meant only for other Muslims. Compare this with the
Hebrew word for charity, tzadekah, from which the Muslim word may derive.
For Jews, charity is not limited to Jews; it is given freely to anyone in need.

was sitting in a leather tent. He said, "Count six signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my
death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will afflict you (and kill you in great numbers) as
the plague that afflicts sheep, the increase of wealth to such an extent that even if one is given one
hundred Dinars, he will not be satisfied; then an affliction which no Arab house will escape, and
then a truce between you and Bani Al-Asfar (i.e. the Byzantines) who will betray you and attack
you under eighty flags. Under each flag will be twelve thousand soldiers” Hadith 4:401.

The term 'assassin' is generally assumed to be derived from its connections to a militant sect of
Ismaili Muslims called the Hashshashin, active from the eighth to the fourteenth centuries.
Folklore has it that these soldiers, who killed members of a rival caliphate, were drugged with
hashish. The word assassin is derived from either hasishin for the supposed influence of the drugs
on their boldness, and their disregard for their own lives in the process, or hassansin for their
leader, Hassan-i-Sabah (Wikipedia.org).

““The… compilations of hadith are voluminous, and they have a lot to say about jihad.
However, before going to these classic collections, we should begin by looking at one hadith that
is very often quoted to demonstrate a nonviolent meaning of jihad: Upon his return from battle
Muhammed is cited as having said, "We have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad
(i.e. the struggle against the evil of one's soul)." This is very often cited as a proof-text for the

"real" meaning of jihad being inward, spiritual struggle. But there is a problem: Muhammed
never made such a statement. The hadith in which Muhammed is said to speak of "greater" vs.
"lesser" jihad is of doubtful authenticity. It does not appear in any of the six collections of the
sahih sittah. In fact, a number of scholars maintain that this hadith is a forgery and of a doubtful
line of transmission. According to one authority:

‘There is a Hadith related by a group of people which states that the Prophet [peace be
upon him] said after the battle of Tabuk: “We have returned from Jihad Asghar [lesser
jihad] to Jihad Akbar [greater jihad].” This hadith has no source, nobody whomsoever in
the field of Islamic Knowledge has narrated it. Jihad against the disbelievers is the most
noble of actions, and moreover it is the most important action for the sake of mankind.’

On the basis of the above statements we can conclude by saying that the evidence used as
proof or the basis for establishing that Jihad against disbelievers on the battlefield is Jihad Asghar
[lesser jihad] and Jihad against the desires and Shaitaan [Satan, the devil] is Jihad Akbar [greater
jihad], are weak if not false Hadith. One of the counter-hadith with a better chain of transmission
… goes like this:
A man asked [the Prophet]: "...and what is Jihad?" He [peace be upon him] replied: "You
fight against the disbelievers when you meet them (on the battlefield)." He asked again: "What
kind of Jihad is the highest?" He [peace be upon him] replied: "The person who is killed whilst
spilling the last of his blood." This seems to leave little doubt as to how Muhammed understood
jihad. But let us not make the case on just one example. There are many ahadith on jihad, and
they make its meaning quite clear. First and foremost, jihad meant combat on the battlefield, and
