BRITAINS LEADING expert on tackling Islamophobia has

warned fellow Muslims they cannot demand action
against anti-Islamic prejudice while holding anti-Semitic
views, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.
Fiyaz Mughal, director of Tell MAMA, which monitors
anti-Muslim attacks, was reacting to a disturbing survey
on UK Muslim attitudes published this week, which showed
that one-in-three think Jews have too much power and
talk too much about the Holocaust.
Mughal, who is also a director of Faith Matters, an interfaith project set up to counter extremist attitudes, said: It
is clear that the scourge of anti-Semitism still pervades some sections of Muslim communities.
He was speaking after data emerged this
week from respected polling company ICM,
which interviewed 1,081 adults between
April and May last year, for a Channel 4
programme called What British Muslims
Really Think, which aired on Wednesday night.
More than a quarter of respondents felt Jews
were responsible
for most wars,
compared to a
six percent average across
the UK, while
almost four in
10 felt Jews had
too much control over
global affairs, compared to a 10 percent
average over the general population.

Elsewhere, three in 10 said Jews think they
are better than other people and four in
10 said Jews were more loyal to Israel
than to the UK, while only a quarter felt
anti-Semitism was a problem in the UK.
Muslims cannot shout out for action on
Islamophobia while holding intolerant

unique insight. He added: We are
used to seeing anti-Semitism polls
stating five or ten percent of the
general population holds anti-Semitic
attitudes. However, [they] seldom adequately capture Muslim sentiment,
so this particular side of the survey is
very important and useful, because it
helps indicate the extent of this really
serious problem and places it alongside a
range of other attitudes.
The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA)
said the results showed that interfaith initiatives
had failed to stop high levels of Muslim anti-Semitism, adding: UK Muslims hold deeply anti-Semitic
views. We note the shocking levels of anti-Jewish opinion,

ANTI-SEMITISM IS EVERYONES FIGHT

DAVID MILIBAND has condemned repulsive outbreaks of
modern anti-Semitism and
insisted the fight against the
scourge requires people to
cross party loyalties and religious faith lines, writes Justin
Cohen.
The former foreign secretary
was speaking to the Board
of Deputies presidents dinner
during a brief return to the
UK from New York, where he is
heading the International
Rescue Committee.
While he did not mention
the string of anti-Semitic scandals surrounding Labour, he
described hatred against Jews
as assault on all humanity.
Miliband told the more than

400 guests: Some of the most

painful conversations Ive had
over the past two years are when
New Yorkers say to me: Should
I be worried about anti-Semitism
in Europe? And, of course, the
answer has to be yes. Outbreaks
of modern anti-Semitism are repulsive. And the response cannot be to turn away. It must be
to engage, not ignore.
Because it is an assault on all
humanity, it is for all humanity to
withstand. In doing so, we have
a responsibility to cross party
loyalties, cross religious faith
lines and cross ethnic backgrounds. Just as the fight
against anti-Semitism is not just
for the Jewish community, so
the Jewish community has

something to contribute to the

fight against all forms of discrimination.
He reserved special praise
for former parliamentary colleague John Mann, chair of the
All-Party Parliamentary Group
Against Antisemitism , who was
ahead of his time in pursuing
the issue.
With just two weeks until
Pesach, Miliband focused on
the modern exodus which,
he said, has seen one in every
120 people on the planet displaced by conflict.
He said he was moved by

Greece when he became a
voice of shared humanity for
those of all faiths and none.
Although none have experienced the trauma of fleeing
quite like the Jewish people,
the community also provides
an example for renewal and resettlement, Miliband said.
Wherever Jews have fled,
they have set about restoring
life building schools as well
as synagogues, earning citizenship, building businesses, running for office, creating charities.
Everywhere they have gone,
they have put down new roots,
without forgetting their own history. They have become their
own light unto the nations.

David Miliband in conversation with, from left, Mark Regev and the Boards Jonathan Arkush and Gillian Merron

The Board, he said, was

itself constantly renewing and
boasted a conscience that
never forgets the rest of the
world.
The former cabinet minister,
who received a standing ovation, also spoke about how his
familys experience of fleeing
the Nazis provided part of the

impetus for taking on his current role at the helm of an organisation, set up by Einstein,
to aid refugees.
I felt that in a small way,
my joining the IRC could close a
personal circle, repaying a small
part of the debt my family owed
to those who helped us by offering support to those who are

fleeing and rebuilding today.

On Einstein he added: It is
no coincidence that Albert
Einstein, a man renowned as
a champion of Jewish freedoms,
was also the founder of an
organisation which aims to save
lives wherever they need saving,
irrespective of religion.

ISRAEL IS the only Middle

The envoy, who took up his

hopes of further enhancing
bilateral ties to more than

Reflecting on the incom-

ing festival of Pesach and its

story of freedom from oppression, Regev, the former
foreign media spokesman
for Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, said: We can
all take great pride in the
freedoms Israel guarantees
to all citizens Jews and
non Jews alike.
In the great expanse of
the Middle East, in a region
plagued by extremism, violence and tyranny, Israel

stands out as beacon of freedom and pluralism. Israel

enjoys a rambunctious parliament, feisty media and active

A SENIOR MEMBER of a Conservative Party group in Bradford has been suspended over
comments one Labour MP has
branded anti-Semitic.
Abdul Zaman, who is
deputy chair of the Bradford
Conservation Association, is
believed to have made remarks about Jews in Mirpuri, a
Pakistani dialect, during a local
elections meeting on Monday.
According to the Urban Echo
newspaper, Zaman said: Why
should we let our daughters dishonour us We will not give up
the Biradri (clan) which is handed
down from our forefathers...
We must send a clear message
to the Christians and the Jews.
Following these alleged remarks, Labour MP for Bradford
West, Naz Shah, wrote a letter
of complaint to David Cameron.
She was quoted in The Telegraph & Argus as saying she

had grave concerns over such

comments, adding: Mr Zaman
was speaking very passionately
about clan politics, women,
Jews and Christians and defying
equality values while endorsing
misogyny and anti-Semitism.
Barry Whitaker, chairman of
the association, refuted Shahs
claims, saying: I did not hear a
single word of complaint about
anything that was said. She is
accusing Abdul Zaman of misogyny and anti-Semitism. He
did use the word Jews. He was
talking about Jews and Christians joining with us, unifying
with us and being as one, rather
than as separate entities.
Board of Deputies president
Jonathan Arkush said: The
alleged comments of Abdul
Zaman are of grave concern.
Every political party must
stand opposed to anti-Semitism and division.

A LABOUR COUNCILLOR has

been suspended for posting a
message on her Twitter account claiming that Hitler was
the greatest man in history.
Aysegul Gurbuz, a councillor
for Lutons High Town ward,
also tweeted that Ed Miliband
would never be Prime Minister
because he was Jewish, and
suggested that Iran could
develop a nuclear weapon to
wipe Israel off the map.
Following the allegations,
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn
insisted that the party was
absolutely resolute on tackling abhorrent anti-Semitism.
He said there was no place
for any racism of any sort
within the party and that swift
action was taken in any cases
coming to light.
Corbyn told BBC Ones
Andrew Marr Show: AntiSemitism is absolutely abhor-

rent and wrong. Anyone that

commits any act of anti-Semitism, that makes anti-Semitic
remarks, is auto excluded from
the party and an inquiry follows immediately.
We have suspended, we will
suspend, any member that
behaves in that way.
Gurbuz suggested her sister
may have posted the nowdeleted comments on her
Twitter account.
The allegations follow a series of incidents involving antiSemitic comments by Labour
activists, including one who was
suspended after posting tweets
referring to Jews with big
noses and describing Hitler as
a Zionist God.
A Labour Party spokeswoman said: Councillor Gurbuz has been suspended from
the Labour Party pending an
investigation.

Labour Party members found guilty of

anti-Semitism face permanent expulsion
LABOUR PARTY members found guilty of
anti-Semitism could be permanently excluded
from the party under proposals to change the
partys rules put forward this week, writes
Justin Cohen.
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell has called
for those who express anti-Semitic sentiment
to receive lifetime bans, but the Jewish Labour
Movement says there are no clear provisions
to enable automatic exclusions for any form
of racism.
But JLM, backed by a number of MPs, is now
urging the party to add an explicit mention of
anti-Semitism and Islamophobia alongside other
offences deemed to be prejudicial to the party.
The organisation said: The current rules have
caused a situation in which anti-Semites have been
able to remain in the party, or rejoin the party after
periods of suspension, despite NEC investigations.
The NEC needs more power to be able to act
swiftly against anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and
other racism. The party needs to set an example
when investigating allegations of racism.
Saying the current rules include three clauses
under which members can be automatically
removed, JLM added: This makes it seem that
supporting another party, in the eyes of the rulebook is a much worse offense than racism.
Jeremy Newmark, chair of JLM, said he hoped
the proposal would be accepted by the national
executive committee before going to Labours annual conference with its recommendation.
Anti-Semitism has been repeatedly condemned by Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn
[pictured] amid a spate of scandals that have
seen at least five members suspended from the
party over the past month.
Among them was Vicki Kirby, who was sus-

pended in 2014 after tweeting that Jews had

big noses before being reinstated a short time
afterwards and being elected as the partys vicechair in Woking. She was then re-suspended.
While anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are
different and distinct, the proposals come on
the back of a rise in both. The changes would
give due regard to the Macpherson definition
of a racist incident which places particular value
on the perception of the victim and make it
clear that Zionism cannot be used as a term of
abuse or substituted for where the word Jew
has been commonly used by anti-Semites.
But JLM said: It will not prevent people
from criticising the actions of Israel or policies
of its elected government. It would draw a distinction between legitimate discourse and antiSemitic rhetoric, which is inflammatory, divisive,
dangerous and undermines the ability of our
party to make a serious contribution to the struggle for
peace between Israel and
the Palestinians.
Jon Lansman, who
founded the pro-Corbyn
organisation Momentum,
told Jewish News: The
idea of a rule change dealing with anti-Semitism is a
good one. Jeremy Newmarks proposal puts it
into the context of
other
hate
speech and actions which is
right. All are
wholly unacceptable.

Stamford Hill rabbi condemns

secularist hate and prejudice
A LEADING Stamford Hill rabbi claims secularists who attack unregistered Orthodox
schools have been shown to be anti-Semitic after the head of the National Secular
Society spoke of a strong Jewish lobby.
Rabbi Avroham Pinter, a spokesman for
the community and principal of Yesodeh Hatorah Girls School, said the outburst
showed that the secularist lobby group held
opinions based on prejudice and hate.
It comes after NSS executive director
Keith Porteous Wood spoke on LBC Radio
last week about government attempts to
close illegal Jewish schools when he made
the remarks.
Asked about the schools, some of which
have been ordered to close, he said: There
is a very, very strong Jewish lobby which actually undermines of which the government appear to be frightened and allows
the rule of law to be undermined.
He said it was an open secret and that
it also applied to planning laws, adding: If
the Jewish community wants to build massively overbuild and extend their houses,
they just get away with it. He continued:
No doubt there are an awful lot of Jewish
councillors elected who are going to be very
happy to look in the other direction.
But this week NSS officials said: We can
assure you that no malice was intended and
greater care will be taken in future to try to
avoid such language.
In a letter to the Board of Deputies, the
NSS added: We appreciate that the Board
does not condone illegal schools and we
apologise for any offence.

However, Pinter reacted furiously, saying:

He added: The NSS can no longer claim

The findings also show the
persistence of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about Jewish

ELECTION COUNTDOWN: LONDON ASSEMBLY HUSTINGS

IM ANTI BDS... NOW I KNO

BY MARC

SHOFFMAN
TWO SPEAKERS at this weeks London Assembly hustings were forced into an embarrassing
U-turn this week after admitting they did not
know what the controversial boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign was.
Speaking at the hustings for Barnet and
Camden on Monday evening, organised by the
London Jewish Forum, Green Party candidate
Stephen Taylor at first said he was for BDS
before backtracking to say he was in fact neutral, while John Baskin of the UK Independence
Party standing in for the candidate Joseph
Langton said he would pass on answering the
question.
After being informed that BDS stood for the
boycott, divestment and sanctions of Israel,
Baskin said he and Taylor were unaware
what the acronym stood for and added that it
unfairly singles out Israel.
Taylor later clarified that he believed BDS
was a crude attack on a difficult problem.
The other candidates, Labours Andrew
Dismore, Liberal Democrat Zack Polanski and
Conservative Daniel Thomas said they opposed the BDS campaign.
Dismore said: Part of the problem is people
dont understand what it means in Israel. I visited Israel and saw factories where Palestinian
workers were supervising Orthodox Jews.
There are drugs companies making medication

He added that BDS by default was also
a risk, highlighting the Thames cable car spon-

sorship smallprint of a contract almost signed

by London Mayor Boris Johnson with Emirates
that said Tranport for London could not trade
with Israel.

The BDS mix-up capped an emotive hustings that addressed a wide range of subjects,
from anti-Semitism to local transport and housing issues. Dismore came under pressure to ex-

OW WHAT IT IS
plain why Jewish voters should trust the Labour
Party, given the recent criticism of opposition
leader Jeremy Corbyns attempts to clamp
down on anti-Semitism.
He explained that the recent issues did
not represent the vast majority of members
and listed his achievements as both Hendon
MP and London Assembly member, such as
establishing Holocaust Memorial Day.
Dismore, the incumbent at City Hall for
Barnet and Camden, also gave his backing to
an Israeli investment week to combat Israeli
apartheid events.
He spent much of the evening defending
his track record of speaking out against extremism and standing up for the community as
he looks to stay in his seat at the Greater
London Authority.
Other candidates were also asked how they
would tackle anti-Semitism in the capital.
Deputy Leader of Barnet Council Thomas,
the Tory candidate attempting to dislodge
him, said he would encourage faith schools to
interact with schools of other beliefs to foster
tolerance and said a zero-tolerance policy
was needed on anti-Semitism.
He said he would continue the work he had

already done locally on supporting faith

schools and standing up against anti-Semitism
as well as backing issues such as affordable
housing. He claimed: These things can only
be done with a Conservative government and
a Conservative mayor.
For the Liberal Democrats, Polanski, said he
would scrap the Garden Bridge project and
use the money to finance more police officers.
He said he was proud as a Jewish and gay
man that Israel was the only country in the Middle East where he could walk down the street
holding his partners hand, adding that London
needs a cohesive Liberal voice.
Baskin admitted his party, UKIP, has had
bad apples in the past that have now been
weeded out.
He then appeared to blame immigration for
the rise in anti-Semitism, while the Green
Partys Taylor said the austerity measures were
a factor dividing communities.
The hustings finished with a simple controversial yes/no question as to whether candidates would invite banned organisations such
as terrorist groups to speak at City Hall.
All said no except Taylor, who insisted dialogue was important.

Disability, not dependency.

Parts of Redbridge where Jewish

women feel frightened to walk
ANXIOUS RESIDENTS told would-be candidates for the London Assembly this week that
there were areas of their borough where a
man wearing a kippah would start a riot and
in which Jewish women felt frightened to
walk, writes Jenni Frazer.
The sometimes passionate exchanges took
place at a hustings organised by the London
Jewish Forum, held at the Redbridge Jewish
Community Centre.
But while the audience turn-out was relatively high around 60 people the same
could not be said for the panel. The Conservative candidate, Keith Prince, was not available, and the former MP for Ilford North, Lee
Scott [pictured], stood in for him. Lawrence
Webb, the UKIP candidate, failed to show up,
despite messages that he was on his way.
Scott was joined on the panel by Lee Burkwood for the Green Party, Ian Sanderson for
the Liberal Democrats, and Ivana Bartoletti for
the Labour Party.
Although LJF chairman Adrian Cohen urged
a widening of the debate, it was clear from
the beginning of the evening that anti-Semitism in politics and its fallout was at the
forefront of everyones concerns.
Scott who now works for the Conservative
mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith angrily
brandished a series of anti-Semitic tweets that
had been posted during his last General Election campaign.
He spoke of having to attend a
public meeting
with three plainclothed police officers and two
uniforms and
claimed some of
the abuse directed at him had
come from Labour
political opponents.
He had
received
death
threats
a n d

been called a dirty Jew, he said, and people had been warned not to vote for him in
that guise.
Using anti-Semitic language is not acceptable, he said, adding that long-time
Labour MPs and supporters such as Louise
Ellman or Lord Levy should resign from the
party and sit as independents because of
the ongoing problem with anti-Semitism in
the Labour Party.
However, the meeting all but erupted
when audience member Deborah Fink, wellknown as a Jewish campaigner for Palestinian
rights, repudiated the emphasis on anti-Semitism. She said: I object to these exaggerations of anti-Semitism a lot of the so-called
anti-Semitism towards Jews is because of
their attitudes on Israel. And I have received
many death threats from other Jews.
Asked what they would do to tackle antiSemitic hate crime in London, all the candidates spoke about improving police numbers.
Bartoletti maintained that anyone in the
Labour Party displaying anti-Semitic attitudes
should be expelled immediately adding,
ruefully: If we had won the election in May,
we would have had a Jewish prime minister.
Labour was home to many members of the
Jewish community, and thats how it should
be, she declared.
Perhaps the most remarkable response of
the evening came in answer to a question
about why Redbridge, once home to the
biggest Jewish population in Europe, had declined so rapidly thousands of younger Jews
have left the area. Asked what the panel
would do to restore the Jewish community
presence, Scott had a surprising solution.
He revealed that he is going to France next
month to meet people at Jewish community
centres in Paris to try to encourage French
Jews to move to Redbridge.
There were thousands of French Jews already in London, fleeing anti-Semitism in their
country, he said, but many of them were relatively well-off and had settled in wealthy central London neighbourhoods. He believed that
there were numbers of less well-heeled French
Jews whom he thought might enjoy settling in
Redbridge.

UK-Arab group criticised for Israel primary focus Kinder train to mark anniversary
A LONDON-BASED GROUP working to
advance Arab-British relations has been criticised for a disproportionate focus on Israel
through its social media output.
Caabu, which promotes Palestinian rights
and charts its hard work countering the Israel lobby, has been forced to defend its
priorities after it was revealed that almost
two thirds of its tweets in 2016 have been
about the Jewish state.
The group, which took 55 MPs to the Palestinian territories during the last parliament,
denied that Israel was its primary focus
despite 164 tweets out of a total of 262 this
year being about the state.
Sir Eric Pickles, chairman of Conservative
Friends of Israel, said: For an organisation
committed to educating parliamentarians
about the whole Middle East, its a pity that
it appears to have forgotten that there is
such a diverse and complex range of countries beyond Israel.
Caabu director Chris Doyle hit back at
what he called a cheap smear, adding: Eric
Pickles has had absolutely no dealings with
us and simply does not know what hes talking
about He should look at our website.

Caabu focuses on Palestinian rights

The groups website details links to Palestinian groups such as such as Al Haq, Addameer, DCI-Palestine and Medical Aid for
Palestinians, and in online teaching resource
notes that Hamas performs much-needed
social functions such as building schools and
hospitals, and supports families in need.
Defending Caabu, Doyle said: Our work

as a whole is not summed up by our Twitter

feed. We probably spend more time on Syria
than anything else. We have a small team, focusing on conflict zones like Yemen and Libya,
the issue with refugees We dont pretend
to cover all of the Middle East we cant.
He added: Tweets dont necessarily reflect
the work were doing. Its much harder to take
a specific position in places where the situation
is so fluid, and where there is a lack of access,
although we take a very strong line on things
like the barrel-bombing of civilians in Syria,
which is probably the primary concern at the
moment... It would be wrong to make deductions about our priorities based on Twitter.
He said the stability of the situation in Israel
and Palestine, where the same leaders have
been in place for years, meant it was often easier to report from there and to take a position.
He added: Were perfectly at ease with
the issues we raise with regards Israel, which
are perfectly valid. We make no apologies
for that. The conflict is serious, one of many
that need to be resolved, but there are
some people who would like it to be forgotten, yet we know it can spark wider conflict,
as we saw in Gaza in 2014.

SPECIAL REPORT: ISRAELS BURIAL DEBATE

GRAVE CONCERNS
Lisa Sanders discovers the painful challenges faced by Israelis
who want to mourn relatives and friends in a non-Orthodox way

hen Susan Ahyed attended her friends

funeral in Netanya, she had no idea that
she would end up in Israels Supreme
Court. As she went to stand beside her grieving male
friends, the officiating rabbi ordered her back to the
womens section, fenced off by a row of flowerpots.
I felt terrible, says the retired grandmother, but
all I kept thinking is: whats going to happen when
I die? Are they not going to allow my son to stand
with his sisters at my funeral?
Ahyed left the funeral determined to challenge
the right of the countrys Orthodox-run Chevra
Kadisha (burial societies), to segregate women and
men at funerals.
Several years earlier, a national scandal erupted
when IDF Corporal Lev Peisakhov, who was killed by
Palestinian gunmen while manning a roadblock, was
buried in the outermost corner of Bet Sheans military
cemetery, without official military honours. The rabbis
had determined that, as a non-Halachic-born
Jew, he was not entitled to be buried alongside his
Jewish-born comrades.
The issue of cemeteries and funerals in Israel
is painful and unresolved, and
marred by scandals and accusations of corruption. About
34,000 Jewish people die
in Israel every year. Burials
are mainly the responsibility
of 521 local Chevra Kadisha,
who operate under the governments Religious Services
Ministry. By law, every Jewish
person who dies in Israel,
whether they are a citizen or
not, is entitled to a burial plot
and funeral ceremony paid
for by the National Insurance
Institution.
It sounds simple, but in fact
it is bewilderingly complex.
Chevra Kadisha rabbis decide
who may be buried where,
with more prestigious plots reserved for distinguished religious dynasties, and a sliding scale of
discretionary fees for numerous extras, such as
burial in a particular part of a cemetery, or the
reservation of a double plot.
None of the Chevrot Kadisha allow burial in
a coffin, nor instrumental music. There are places
where women will not be permitted to deliver eulogies even if the speaker is a first-degree relative
of the deceased. These restrictions reflect ultra-

Above: A municipal cemetery. Inset: Menuchat Olam cemetery in Netanya offers a way to be buried in an non-Orthodox Jewish way

Orthodox norms that have

taken root over the years.
Some Israelis have been
opting out of the state
burial system for years, and
private, alternative cemeteries started popping up
in kibbutzim and moshavim
around the country.
At an alternative cemetery, you can choose to have
a strictly Orthodox burial according to Jewish law, or instead you can have a secular ceremony, with music
and floral tributes. The problem is the astronomical
cost associated with these private burials, which
means they are only available to the wealthy few.
The Alternative Burials Law was passed in 1996,
which specified that every Israeli citizen has the right
to a secular burial, funded, just like the Chevra Kadisha
religious burials, by the National Insurance Institute.
In effect, the state has established only a handful of
secular cemeteries and allocates the non-profits that

run them only a tiny budget. One of these is

Menuchat Olam, a tiny, manicured private graveyard
adjacent to the large municipal cemetery in Netanya.
Many of the tombstones display engraved pictures
of the deceased, and lettering in Cyrillic.
Meanwhile, Susan Ahyed took her gender segregation complaint to the Netanya magistrate
court. When her case was thrown out, the issue was
taken up by the Israel Religious Action Center, the
advocacy arm of Israels Reform movement. The
IRAC lawyers hoped to use Ahyeds case to prove
that all public spaces, from buses to cemeteries,
should not be segregated according to gender. But
the district judge also ruled against them.
The district court judge told me I should have
made a scene there if I didnt like what was going
on, Ahyed says. How could I have made a scene
at a friend's funeral?
At the same time, an Orthodox woman, Rose
Davidian, brought a case against the cemetery in
Ofakim in the south, and won 5,000 compensation
after she appealed a Chevra Kadisha ban on eulogising her father at his funeral.

Last summer, Israels Supreme Court overturned

the verdicts in Ahyed vs Chevra Kadisha and ruled
that there was to be no enforced gender segregation at funerals. In practise, little has changed.
For the families of soldiers like Corporal Peisakhov,
there is finally some justice. In February, the legal
adviser to the Defence Department ruled that all
Israeli soldiers killed in the line of duty may now
be buried in a military cemetery without a religious
ceremony but with full military honours. Rabbi
Uri Regev, head of Hiddush, the religious pluralism
organisation, praised the move.
This undoubtedly will be a breakthrough that
will allow families to bury their loved ones in accordance with their faith and lifestyles, he said.
The death debate rumbles on, with opinion
sharply divided over the new high-rise cemeteries
under construction in Tel Aviv. Land is not plentiful in
this part of the world, and there is ongoing debate
over where to build new cemeteries, given the acute
shortage of housing for the living. Under current
plans, 30 further multistorey burial caves will provide an extra 250,000 graves over the next 25 years.

society that a top-rating commentator on Israeli television is an Arab woman who describes herself as a proud Israeli. PETER
KOHN and PHOEBE ROTH meet a reporter
who faces death threats for speaking out on
behalf of both Israel and the Palestinians

y calling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as

she sees it, Lucy Aharish has made enemies among the Arab-Israeli community,
as well as out of some Jewish Israelis and overwhelmingly Palestinians. But she has also
gained a legion of loyal supporters.
Born in 1981 in Dimona, Aharish was five
when she and her family were hurt in a terror
attack in Gaza after two Molotov cocktail
bombs were thrown at their car.
A graudate of the Hebrew University, she
studied journalism in Tel Aviv and worked as
an intern in Germany before becoming the
first Arab news presenter on mainstream Israeli
television.
Speaking to the Australian Jewish News,
during her recent trip to Melbourne for the
United Israel Appeal, the Channel 2 broadcaster admitted that at times, placing herself
above the fray can be lonely and she has had
death threats.
Im isolated from all sides... from the Israeli
Arab community, Im isolated from Palestinians... and also from the Israeli Jewish community, she says.
Aharish said some in the Israeli Arab community dont appreciate the fact that Im outspoken... and from the Jewish community, a lot of
people from the extreme right dont like the

fact that Im also a critic of Israel. I love Israel

and Im proud of it, but when I see something
wrong I dont just stand aside.
Her passionate condemnation of the latest
terror upsurge went viral on YouTube. When
a terrorist enters a coffee house in Tel Aviv to
shoot people, he doesnt ask if they are Muslims, Christians or Jews he just starts shooting and killing.
As the only Muslim Arab student at her
school in Dimona, she recalled that returning

to school the day after a terrorist

attack, as a Muslim girl, thats not
something easy. Everything you
hear is just Arabs... we want them
to die, we want to burn them.
In high school, she saw filthy Arabs and
other hate graffiti on bathroom walls.
She is a critic of Palestinians indoctrination
of their children to hate Jews and Israelis, but
said Jewish Israelis need to increase their sensitivity to Arabs, bemoaning that 95 percent

of Israeli Arabs know Hebrew but only five percent of Israeli Jews understand Arabic.
Aharish sees education on both sides of
the conflict as the only long-term circuit
breaker. The life experience I had does not
allow you to be angry only on one side, she
pondered. Its allowing you to be angry on all
sides that leads to understanding.
Describing Israel as a place where everything is always complicated, Aharish told
guests at the UIA
breakfast that in
order for any kind of
solution
to
be
reached, leaders in
the region must step
up.
Each and every
person can be president, can be a prime
minister. But not each
and every person in
the world can be a
leader. And unfortunately our leaders are
more occupied with
being prime ministers
and presidents than
actually being leaders, she said.
Addressing the death threats she has received for speaking out, she insisted, I refuse
to be an irrelevant majority. I refuse to fight for
peace and to say, Oh the extremists are
louder. Because theyre loud, theyre winning.
I refuse to be this majority. If we are silent, history will repeat itself.

Muslim views on Jews

WHAT DO British Muslims really
think about us? To paraphrase a
study this week, they believe we
only care about ourselves, are
obsessed with the Holocaust
and start wars. Oh, and that we
control governments and
finance the media and anything
else worth controlling. Those
polled werent asked who was
behind 9/11, but if we werent
given equal credit there too
wed feel short-changed.
OK, fine, far from all UK
Muslims think these things, but
a large minority do, according to
stats from ICMs poll. Those
large minorities of respondents,
if applied across the country,
would translate into hundreds of
thousands of lets just say it
anti-Semites. Thats scary.

but privately, many were left

wringing their hands, scratching
their heads and wondering where
this leaves them. Fundamentally,
they wondered why it is so difficult for people who face race
hate to see that others who face
race hate have a lot in common
and lots of shared interests.
Anti-Semitism is different to
Islamophobia. It is thousands of
years old and rears its ugly head
in the form of criticism of a country but both Muslims and Jews
have to deal with people holding
stereotypical views about them.
So it is even more disappointing
to see Muslim anti-Semitic Jewish
stereotypes are so ingrained.
This poll demonstrates with
unnerving clarity that interfaith
work, far from being undermined or redundant, now takes
on huge new significance.

NO HALACHIC BARRIER THE LEFT WILL NEVER

TO IMMUNISATION
ACCEPT THE JEWS
In the column Torah for Today (Jewish
News, 7 March), Rabbi Ariel Abel based his
opinion on immunisation on a complete
misunderstanding.
Immunisation encourages the body to
produce its own antibodies and reduce
reliance on external treatment.
The batch of seven given to babies
protects against grave diseases, such as
meningitis, diphtheria and polio. Scholars
with both medical and Halachic knowledge, such as Rabbi Akiva Tatz, conclude
it is negligent not to immunise children
and there is no halachic barrier to this.
Parents are free to make their own decisions, but Halacha is not a factor they need
to take into account.
Dr Sara Levene
By email
I read Rabbi Abels views on immunisation
with interest and alarm. I am pleased his
child has recovered well, but his experience
should not cloud the general view about
vaccination. The Torah does not have an
opinion on immunisation. To cite the case
of Isaac is misleading and irrelevant.
Though breast is best, it cant give sufficient protection in a way vaccination can.
My main concern is the continuation of
the argument over the general safety of
vaccines as seen with MMR.
What does Rabbi Abel mean by sufferable disease with negligible effect? Does
he consider gastroenteritis negligible?
Vaccination has reduced hospital admission for this condition in the UK alone by
50,000 a year.
Death and serious illness owing to
measles has been reduced greatly, as
have pertussis (whooping cough) and
haemophilus influenzae b (Hib).
Babies immune systems are dealing with
many new live virus and bacteria daily, so
the suggestion they cant cope with a multivaccine is just plain wrong. Can I suggest
the good rabbi concentrates on managing
his constituents souls and leave their
bodies to those who are qualified?

Poor columnist Joe Millis [Jewish News,

Opinion, 17 March]. He deserves our
sympathy, for in railing against the endemic
anti-Semitism of the Labour Party under
Jeremy Corbyn, he unwittingly reveals the
real reason for his impotent fury.
Millis is one of those Jews who secretly
craves acceptance by the hard left
of which Corbyn is an exemplar. To
achieve it, he has fulfilled the role
demanded by it, namely, by being the
good Jew who denigrates Israel and its
governments policies unequivocally.
He writes that the settlers in the (sic)
occupied Palestinian territories are an
existential threat to the third Jewish
commonwealth, and Israels current farright, fundamentalist government is the
worst in the states history and has done

more to destroy the countrys standing

than all the BDS actions in the world put
together.
He obviously hasnt read Prime
Minister Rabins last address to the
Knesset before his assassination, which
was ideologically well to the right of
Netanyahus position today. His rage
rests on his realisation that Israel is only
the excuse for the anti-Jewish hatred that
has sprung to life, and that no amount of
public flagellation of Israel will secure
acceptance of Jews by the hard left.
He further says that I dont think all
anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism, yet it was
the great intellectual member of Israels
Labor party, Abba Eban, who wrote that
the distinction between anti-Semitism
and anti-Zionism is no distinction at all.

ORTHODOX OR NOT,
Sketches & kvetches WE STAND TOGETHER
By Paul Solomons www.daftoons.com

I am heartened that letter writer Robert

Dulin Jewish News, 17 March) is prepared
to state I am entitled to my views on
Jewish observance as I agree he is to his.
The major point of contention between
us is the insistence that we recognise
the non-Orthodox movements as forms of
Judaism and, perhaps more significantly,
their converts as Jews.
Given Liberal Judaism chief Danny Richs
description (Jewish News, 10 March) of
Liberal Judaism as non or post-Halachic,
this is virtually impossible.
However, though it might surprise him,
I totally agree we must surely stand
together to overcome our detractors
or face an uncertain future, although
I would extend such co-operation to
anyone, Jewish or not.
This should be the model for Orthodox/
Liberal relations but can happen only if the
non-Orthodox recognise, as Mr Dulin so
correctly puts it, that we will never agree
religiously and, in consequence, are
genuinely prepared to accept that we are
also entitled to our views.

Labour anti-Semitism: the

tone comes from the top
THE ANTI-SEMITISM in the Labour Party of
Jeremy Corbyn is a narrative that refuses to die.
Not so long ago we, as Jews, believed that the
real anti-Semites sat on the Tory benches; they
were the right-wing Hooray Henrys who would
mock when Jewish Labour loyalists would rise
from the backbenches to defend Israel. Labour
was the party of devout Israel supporters, such as
Harold Wilson, George Brown and Richard Crossman, who could not have been more staunch
Zionists had they been Jewish themselves.
An alternative, less hospitable view of Israel,
Zionism and Jews has long fermented on the farleft and visibly was to be seen in copies of the
Socialist Worker distributed in dank weekends
outside supermarkets and other public places in
the late 20th century. To those of us at university
in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a toxic version
of Israels behaviour and history, bleeding into
anti-Semitism, could already be heard in the well
of some of the debates in the students union.
Never did we really imagine that such views
would gain a hold in the Labour Party, let alone
on the front benches.
That is precisely what has been happening, and
the very tolerance of anti-Zionist attitudes among
members of Her Majestys opposition, an officially
recognised part of the nations democratic set-up,
has given succour to grassroots members of the
Labour Party. The nastiness of the views has also
been influenced by some Islamic extremism.
Among the alleged tweets of Aysegul Gurbuz, the
latest Labour councillor to be suspended, were:

Adolf Hitler=greatest man in history; Iran are

going to have their own nuclear weapon and are
going to wipe Israel off the map and Ed
Miliband is Jewish. He will never be prime minister
of Britain. She was correct in her third tweet, but
missing out on Number 10 was nothing to do with
his Jewishness and much more to do with misguided policies and perceived geekiness.
The views of Corbyn, his shadow chancellor
John McDonnell and member of Labours national
executive Ken Livingstone, are not some spontaneous eruption. A painstaking investigation by my
Daily Mail colleague Guy Adams, an award-winning writer, took him back to the early 1980s when
McDonnell and Livingstone edited the Labour
Herald a paper on the partys fringe yellowing
copies of which can be viewed in the British library.
The Labour Herald was graced by cartoons
which would have done credit to the distinctive
Nazi hate sheet Der Strmer. A 1982 cartoon
shows the late Prime Minister Menachem Begin
dressed as a Nazi officer trampling over Arab
corpses. A 1985 edition, under the editorship of
McDonnell again, uses Nazi symbolism showing
Palestinians herded into concentration camps.
One of the more disturbing aspects of modern
anti-Semitism is the way in which critics of Israel,
in the Middle East and the west, think it is somehow smart to use the language of the Shoah,
the most horrific event of modern times, to
crudely make their point. It makes the connection
between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, which
people who attack Israel, often seek to deny.

It may be impossible for the leader of the

Labour Party and his cohorts to know everything
that is going on in the grassroots and weed out
all of those with unacceptable views. Most of the
time, however, the Corbynistas are on the back
foot, having to react to disclosures made by an
increasingly alert media. In many ways, a free
press is doing what Labour itself should be doing.
It is tricky, however, when the leadership is so
mealy-mouthed in its condemnation of the most
ancient hatred. That seems to run in the Corbyn
family. His brother Piers Corbyns description
of claims by Labour MP Louise Ellman that she
has faced anti-Jewish attacks as absurd betrays both an ignorance (not befitting of a respected climate scientist) and a prejudice. Piers
goes on to say: Zionists cant cope with anyone
supporting the rights of Palestinians.
Each part of that tweet needs deconstructing.
Zionist is effectively being used as a term of
abuse, it makes an assumption that all those
who passionately believe in Israel do not believe
in Palestinian rights which is poppycock. The
reason that Jews in Britain generally support a
two-state solution is because they want the aspirations of Palestinians across the region to be met.
In a New York speech, former Archbishop of
Canterbury George Carey warned that hatred of
Jews exists in dark corners of Britain, including
Labour ranks and at top universities. If only it
were just confined to the dark corners. The tone
comes from the very top. Until the head is cut of
the snake, it will continue to spew venom.

We must fight for a Labour

Party Jews can call home
SADLY, IT still requires some courage to speak up
about racism in ones political party. Last week,
Shazia Awan, a former Conservative Party candidate called out Zac Goldsmiths London mayoral
campaign for using tactics she described as divisive and racist against his Labour opponent,
Sadiq Khan. In the same week, Sadiq told this
newspapers Jewish hustings that Labours poor
response to anti-Semitism within our own ranks
meant that he wore a badge of shame as a
Labour candidate. It is a badge that I, too, wear
as a Labour MP and Im proud of Sadiq for the
strong stance he has taken against anti-Semitism.
Those of us who have spoken out about antiSemitism within the Labour Party havent received a universally positive response. I have
been taken aback by some of the reactions Ive
had when Ive called out anti-Semites within the
party and expressed frustration that the response
has been flat-footed. That flat-footed response
has given many the impression that we are apathetic when it comes to tackling anti-Semitism.
Indeed, even when confronted with hard evidence about the behaviour of some of our
elected representatives, too many Labour members have adopted the ostrich strategy of burying
their heads in the sand and pretending that we
dont have a problem. Some have even engaged
in the worst sort of whataboutery about antiSemitism: What about Israel?
Indeed, what about Israel? Lets be clear: criticism of Israel isnt anti-Semitic, although too often
criticism of Israel does spill over into anti-Semi-

tism. There can be no better example of this than

demanding that British Jews answer for the actions of the Israeli government or seeking to deflect from anti-Semitism in politics by talking
about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. When a
Labour councillors Twitter account carries praise
of Hitler, I dont expect a debate about Israel in
response; I expect swift action to make sure that
such views are never tolerated in the Labour Party.
Speaking out against racism in the Labour Party
isnt an act of disloyalty: its an act of duty. Some in
the party have sought to dismiss those of us with
concerns as having an axe to grind against Labours
democratically-elected leader, Jeremy Corbyn.
But a number of the incidents that have been
brought to light in recent months pre-date Jeremy.
If only Labours problem with anti-Semitism was as
superficial as one man. What we have learned in
recent months is that, like the rest of society,
Labour is not devoid of anti-Semitism. More worryingly, we have fallen short in our response to it.
I would not be doing my duty as a constituency
MP and recently elected co-chair of the All-Party
Parliamentary Group for British Jews (APPG), if
I didnt speak out about the deep concerns that
many people in the Jewish community currently
have about the Labour Party. They are not alone.
A number of decent minded members of my local
Labour Party who are not Jewish have also written
to express their fear that the party is becoming a
place where anti-Semitism is allowed to fester.
People will judge Labour by our actions, not
words. Thats why I welcome the anti-Semitism

action plan proposed by Richard Angell, director of

Progress. It proposes training for Labours National
Executive Committee on how to identify modern
anti-Semitism, with new capacity for Labours compliance unit to make sure complaints are properly
investigated. It suggests adding a vice-chair for the
Jewish community on the NECs equalities committee and self-organised groups for Jewish Labour
youth and student members to help combat
anti-Semitism on campuses. It also demands a lifetime ban for anti-Semitic conduct, supported by
Labours shadow chancellor, John McDonnell.
The plan has been widely welcomed by Labour
MPs and members. It offers an opportunity to
bring the party together in support of meaningful
action to tackle anti-Semitism within our ranks and
to start rebuilding confidence that the Labour
Party, with its proud history of tackling antiSemitism, is fit for the fight against modern hatred
against Jews. Jeremy Corbyn has agreed to meet
with Labour members of the APPG to discuss our
proposals and it is vital that we see swift action.
Ive spoken to lifelong Labour voters who are
questioning whether they can vote Labour again.
I know that some Jewish Labour members have already cut up their membership cards. I hope they
will return and stand with a resurgent Jewish
Labour Movement and their allies who will fight,
fight and fight again for a party we can be proud
of. Until we can replace the badge of shame with
one of pride, we will continue to press for real action against anti-Semitism and a Labour Party that
Jewish people can proudly call their home.

him. He went into the camps himself to get
people out and allowed Leo Baeck, chairman
of the Association of German Rabbis, to use his
home to brief journalists on the Nazi terror.
Benno Cohen, chairman of the German
Zionist Organisation, recalled that in the
months after Kristallnacht one man stood out
above all others like a beacon.
Captain Foley, a man who was
one of the greatest among the
nations of the world. He was the
pimpernel of the Jews.
Not that he would have been
thanked for it in London. The opposition to Jewish refugees
coming to this country was intense. The British Medical Association lobbied government to
prevent the immigration of Jewish doctors. The head of MI6, Sir
Hugh Sinclair, clearly unaware of
what his own man in Berlin was
doing, told the Home Secretary Sir Samuel
Hoare that the number of Jewish refugees arriving in the UK was a menace.
Throughout history, fear and prejudice have
frequently led to opposition to mass immigration, a phenomenon seen in the reaction to
those fleeing for their lives from Syria. Yet nothing demonstrates better than the example of
those who fled Hitler in the 1930s that we have
little to fear from immigration and everything

to gain. Many of those who came here transformed our lives, and very often those of people across the world. Half a dozen of those who
fled the Nazis for Britain went on to become
Nobel prize winners. Their heritage, and that
of Frank Foley, reaches across the generations.
Last year, students at King Edward VI College in Stourbridge, the West Midlands town
where Foley lived in retirement, were asked to
come up with a name for a
new building at their school.
They ignored the claims of
various icons of popular culture and by a large majority
voted in favour of calling it
the Frank Foley Building.
But Foleys efforts cross
generations in a far more tangible way. In 1999, as a result
of the evidence collected for
my biography of Foley, he

FEW PEOPLE in Britain have heard of Frank

Foley [pictured, inset], a short, bespectacled
MI6 officer who served in Berlin during the
1930s. Yet many Jews who fled Nazi persecution have him to thank for saving their lives.
Foley was the MI6 head of station in the
German capital from the early 1920s until
shortly before the Second World War.
His cover was as head of the British Passport Control Office, which issued visas to the
UK, the empire and Palestine, which was governed by Britain under mandate from the
League of Nations.
From the moment Hitler came to power in
1933 and the first concentration camps were
set up, Foleys offices on Berlins Tiergartenstrasse were inundated with Jews trying to flee.
For the next six years, until shortly before the
Second World War, Foley helped tens of thousands flee Nazi Germany for Britain or Palestine, blatantly ignoring the rules in order to get
Jews to safety. As the pressure ramped up on
the Jews, Foley stepped up his own efforts to
help. After Kristallnacht when mass round-ups
of Jews began, Foley and his wife Kay hid three
or four Jewish males in their home every night.
The British Passport Control Office was besieged by the wives of the thousands of men
taken to concentration camps.
With the threat of war imminent, Foley had
other work to do. He was a British spy, running
agents into the heart of the Nazi war machine.
He had no diplomatic immunity. He could have

No place for this poison in

Labour or modern Britain
THE LABOUR Party has a proud history of tackling intolerance and championing equality.
For over a century, Labour has been at the
forefont of the fight for racial, gender and sexual equality and sought to confront discrimination wherever we have found it. As a result, it
has helped build a more tolerant, diverse and
self-confident Britain.
So to hear reports in recent weeks of antiSemitism within our party is deeply concerning.
In my own Holborn and St Pancras constituency we have as Jewish News recently
highlighted rightly refused membership to
one applicant following clear evidence of antiSemitism. My Constituency Labour Party [CLP]
can be proud of the way it handled this difficult
situation and the strength it showed in upholding our core principles.
Wider reports from colleagues and CLPs
across the country show that, sadly, this is not
an isolated incident.
I believe we need do more to support CLPs
facing this challenge. We also need to reassure
voters, supporters and party members that we
will do everything possible to root out and remove anyone using anti-Semitic, racist or discriminatory language.
This should, as the Jewish Labour Movement
and a number of colleagues have said, include
looking at whether existing party rules could
be strengthened to make it easier to expel or
refuse membership on these grounds.
There can, of course, be no doubt that the

overwhelming majority of Labour Party members, supporters and voters will feel anger and
disgust at any allegations of anti-Semitism.
There is no place for this poison in our party
or modern Britain.
There can also be no suggestion that antiSemitism can be justified in any way or at any
time including by the ongoing violence, instability and injustice in the Middle East.
The reality is, though, that in recent years
there has been an increase in recorded anti-Semitic incidents in the UK whenever there has
been a resumption of open hostilities between
Israelis and Palestinians.

that the highest number of recorded anti-Semitic incidents in the UK occurred in July 2014,
the same month as the Israel launched Operation Protective Edge in Gaza.
The CST also report that 2014 saw a record
number (1,179) of such incidents in the UK and
that this was primarily caused by anti-Semitic
reactions to the conflict in Israel and Gaza.
I strongly support a two-state solution with a
secure Israel living alongside a viable and free
Palestinian state.
I am also clear that both sides in this painful
and prolonged conflict must recognise, respect
and abide by international law and fully honour
their human rights obligations. There is a long
way to go on these issues.
But it is absolutely vital that whatever ones
views are of the Middle East, there can be no

excuse for anti-Semitism or Islamophobia.

A key part of confronting this must be to listen to the concerns of the Jewish community
and to other communitys facing discrimination.
I know from my own constituency that there
remains genuine concern about the threat of
violence and intimidation among some ethnic
and religious minorities. We need to acknowledge and address this and to work with the Police and within the community to do so.
We also need to do more to support victims
of hate crime to come forward. I know from my
time as Director of Public Prosecutions and my
from work with victims groups how crucial this
can be, but that too often our criminal justice
system lets down those who have suffered violence or intimidation and fails to protect those
at risk. The Government could and must take
action on this.
Parliament and the tech industry must also
urgently look at what more can be done to address the appalling level of anti-Semitism,
racism and intimidation that is occurring online.
New forms of communication should not offer
new avenues of hatred for racists and xenophobes.
There is, of course, no simple solution to
eradicating anti-Semitism both within our
Party and in wider society. But I believe that
through these steps we can make a difference.
As in the best moments of our past, it will
take collective and concerted action to achieve
progress.

OPINION:
RABBI MIRIAM BERGER AND MARK MAIER
OPINION

DOES MY

BUT LOOK BIG IN THIS?

One big issue, two opposite opinions...

ISRAEL HATRED is simply another form
of anti-Semitism and should be included
in the European definition of anti-Semitism ASAP. Old-fashioned anti-Semites
didnt disappear overnight; they just
changed their modus operandi, replacing
their bleating about Jews (unacceptable)
with bleating about Israel (acceptable).
Israel haters and Jew haters are one
and the same. How else do you explain
the obsessives? Does anyone really believe that they're motivated by an innate,
finely-honed, territory-specific sense of
fairness? Or is it at its core about
JEWS, as it has been since the time of
Abraham? If it werent, wouldnt we see
equally virulent Boycott, Divestment and
Sanctions campaigns directed against
any number of other countries?
Strangely, only Israel (the only Jewish
state) is targeted. Chance? Come off it.
The Board of Deputies says: Anti-Israel
bigotry tends to morph into anti-Semitic
hate. True. Justice Secretary Michael
Gove says: The new anti-Semites rally
behind the BDS campaign It reintroduces into our world a prejudice that
should have vanished. True. The University of California has even called antiZionism bigotry. Its time to stop
pussy-footing about, call it what it is and
add it to Europes Working Definition of
Antisemitism, which acts as a guide for

law enforcement agencies.

It wouldnt mean people couldnt criticise Israel, just that if they only criticised Israel, in such a way that collectively
demonised Jews, it could be classed as
race-hate, depending on context.
Moreover, this isnt just some lofty point
of principle. Hatred of Israel often fomented anonymously and online often
leads to hatred of Jews. We see it in spikes
of anti-Semitism following Israeli actions in
Gaza, and the online bile this generates.
Time to join the dots, stop pretending that
these people are anything other than simple anti-Semites... and label them as such.

BUT...
DOING SO would cross a very important
line. People must be free to criticise a state
for its behaviour even its existence
without fear of being called racist for
doing so. It is especially important that this
fundamental principle of free speech applies when a state is closely associated
with one particular race or religion.
Were not calling for fierce critics of
India to be labelled anti-Hindu, nor are
we asking for Myanmars detractors to be
classed as Buddhist haters, so why do so
with Israel? Besides, Israeli and Diaspora

Jews are themselves among the first to

criticise Israel. Many Jews are proud antiZionists. Others hate what Israel does
vis-a-vis the Palestinians. Under an extended definition of anti-Semitism, thousands of Jews who share these views
would, overnight, be deemed racist
against their own race.
Even if an Israel hater is not Jewish,
he/she is not typically motivated by Jewhate. The vast majority of the 150,000
demonstrators marching through the City
of London two years ago were marching
because they hated what Israel was doing
in Gaza, not because they hated Jews.
Similarly, many boycotters dont want
to wipe Israel off the map, they just want
Israel to stop building Jewish settlements
in the heart of any future Palestinian state.
Yes, some dress up their race-hate as Israel-hate, but these people tend to get
found out very quickly, and Europes current definition of anti-Semitism already includes things such as denying the Jewish
people their right to self-determination,
e.g. by claiming Israel is a racist endeavour; applying double standards; using
symbols/images associated with classic
anti-Semitism to characterise Israel/Israelis; drawing comparisons of Israeli policy to that of the Nazis; and holding Jews
collectively responsible for Israels actions. Enough to be getting on with.
Are Israel haters and Jews haters simply one and the same?

THE MAN WHO BECAME A

MASTER
OF
REINVENTION
Fiona Leckerman speaks to award-winning Israeli novelist
A B Yehoshua about love, family and ambition in The Extra
E
ven in his 80th year, acclaimed Israeli
author A B Yehoshua believes its never too
late to challenge himself and he has certainly done so in his latest novel, The Extra.
Yehoshua, described by critics as the Israeli
Faulkner says of his new book, which tackles
love, family and artistic ambition: Its difficult for
an old writer to invent something new each time,
its not easy not to repeat myself.
While he asserts that this is the most
non-political and non-ideological book that
I have ever written, he concedes that politics
inevitably stray again into his work. I thought
I would be totally free of this but I wasnt
free because when I saw all the interpretations, I noticed people had still connected political and ideological theories to the story and
its characters.
The Extra revolves around Noga, who has
returned to Israel to carry out a social experiment conceived by her brother to move their
widowed mother into assisted living accommodation in Tel Aviv.
Noga, a harpist in the Dutch Orchestra, agrees
to house-sit the family apartment in Jerusalem
for three months.
On returning to her native Israel, Noga is
confronted with her past and her controversial
decision not to have children, a decision that saw
the end her marriage and forces her to re-examine the deeper reasons for that choice.
The book is unromantic in its description of
Israel, not heavily Zionist, but shows a normalcy
to being Israeli and living in Jerusalem.
Yehoshua, an award-winning
author who has previously published 11 novels, says the critical reaction in Israel is of huge
importance to him.
The real public for me is
the Israeli public. This is the
public that I have created an
intimate relationship with over
the years. They are the readers who follow my work the
closest.
He describes the greatest
moment of pleasure in how
academics have taken to his
work: They reveal things to
me that I could not have seen
myself, as the writer; they are
touching on the delicate issues that I could not have,
expressing some profound
analysis in my work.
His wife Rivka, a psychoanalyst, and close circle of friends were able to
provide sharp insights into The Extra, which has
given me immense satisfaction.
However, Yehoshua confides that he did not
start his latest novel knowing all the answers to
the questions he poses within the narrative.
I threw away the easy answers during
the writing of the novel and tried to go for a

A B Yehoshua sees himself as a writer and an intellectual rather than as an ambassador for Israel

more profound explanation,

he says.
In regard to Nogas decision to forgo motherhood, he
adds: The mechanism of the
novel was to penetrate indirectly, trying to crack her firm
conviction that she is doing
good by her decision not to
have children and I dismissed
from the beginning the easy
excuse like career or because
she didnt believe in the future of Israel from a
political point of view.
Yehoshua explains that in his opinion, Nogas
decision not to have children is the exception.
In his own life, he enjoys a large extended family
of three children and seven grandchildren, so
such a decision is certainly an exception in his
life and the topic greatly intrigued him.

He delves deep into Nogas childhood in

search of explaining her life choices and
concludes: There is a symbiotic relationship
between her parents as described in the first
chapter they have a bed that is anot big, but
find themselves comfortable in this bed and they
amuse each other and talk to each other.
There is a feeling they are even dreaming
the same dreams together and this is the reason
why Noga doesnt want to stay at home, because this symbiosis did not give her the space
to develop herself as a separate human being.
In this sense only when the father dies and
now the mother is separated, little by little she
has the feeling of an extra, a superficial experience she is in a scene where others are the
main parts.
Yehoshua continues: The word extra in English is so specific and accurate; by taking part in
this kind of experience, she is unknowingly con-

fronting something in her self-confidence.

Despite his international success, he admits
that he does not see himself as an ambassador
for Israel, but instead as a writer and an intellectual and has deliberately chosen to veer
away from the political situation for his latest
work.
He adds: I have to express myself as a citizen,
to my family and friends about the major problems in Israel and the questions that surround
the Jewish people now and historically, but with
this book I maintain a non-political stance.
The Extra is a fascinating novel that positions
the issues and challenges of its characters at
the forefront and for once, refreshingly places
Israel as the extra and not the main focus of the
narrative.
The Extra by A B Yehoshua is published by Halban
Publishers, priced 12.99

SUITS
JEW!
Francine Wolfisz visits a new exhibition
revealing the Jewish story behind mens
fashion and discovers how the famous
phrase the full monty was coined

hat do ready-to-wear suits, unisex clothing and ostentatious kipper ties have in
common? As it turns out, they are all
the innovations of Jewish tailors and designers
which, as a new exhibition reveals, have long
been at the forefront of mens fashion.
Moses, Mods and Mr Fish, now open at the
Jewish Museum London and running until
19 June, uncovers the fascinating history of the
modern male wardrobe over the course of
100 years.
The exhibition begins with a story familiar to
many descendants of Eastern European immigrants living at the turn of the 20th century,
when a staggering 60 percent of Jews in Britain
worked in tailoring a statistic partly explained
by religious laws regarding the mixing of fibres,
as well as the fact that Jews from the Pale of
Settlement were restricted in their choice
of profession.
When they migrated to the UK, no fewer

Moss Bros was set up by Moses Moss in 1851

than one in four were tailors with the

skills essential for Britains flourishing textiles industry, but
it was within readyto-wear clothing
a cheaper alternative
to traditional tailoring that these
Jewish artisans
began to make
their mark.
One
such
man
was
Moses Moses,
who
later
changed his
name to Moss
and purchased
remnants
of
cloth to manufacture ready-towear suits. When
he died in 1894, he
left the company to
his two sons, Alfred and
George, who established
the now well-known retailer,
Moss Bross.
Curator Elizabeth Selby explains: These
early companies were instrumental in producing ready-to-wear clothing, as well as helping
the democratisation of mens fashion.
Jews were really important in bringing fashionable clothes to a bigger section of society.
Previously, working-class people couldnt
afford new clothes, but these companies really
changed things using the new technology that
was now available.
Another Jewish-owned company at the forefront of the ready-to-wear revolution included
Marks & Spencer, founded by Michael Marks
and Tom Spencer in 1894, which launched its
range in the 1920s. By 1936, textiles accounted
for no fewer than two-thirds of the companys
total sales.
The exhibition also highlights the literal ragsto-riches story of Montague Burton, a Lithuanian immigrant who set up his first shop in 1903.
Scoring success by selling bespoke suits at
affordable prices, Burton experienced immense
growth and by 1939 had 595 branches, with

Designer Mr Fish (seated) with celebrity friends including Twiggy,

a presence in every
major shopping
area.
On display is
a beautifullypreserved, double breasted
pinstripe lounge
suit,
bought
in 1936 as a
rite of passage,
says Selby, who
notes the owner
wore it throughout
his lifetime, including to his own wedding in 1949.
During the war, Burton
made one-quarter of all uniforms for British armed forces and
one-third of all demob suits after.
Returning soldiers were given a complimentary
hat, suit, two shirts, a tie, shoes and a raincoat
hence the saying the full monty, in honour
of Burtons founder.
But it was in the years after the Second
World War that menswear really took off and
fashion changed most radically, with Jewish
designers again at the forefront of emerging
trends.
From the heart of Carnaby Street, the epicentre of this fashion revolution, emerged
a host of innovative stores, that included Lord
John, run by brothers Warren and David Gold,
Irvine Sellars pioneering unisex chain Mates
and the vintage-loving I Was Lord Kitcheners
Valet, set up by Robert Orbach.
Typifying this era of forward-thinking, outrageous fashion, the exhibits include a beautifully-crafted brown suede Cecil Gee jacket,
worn by John Lennon in 1963, a mod suit by
Harry Bilgorri, from 1966 and a flamboyant
kipper tie so-called after a play on the
name of designer Michael Fish.

Selby adds: In the Sixties we see this real

explosion of colour and theres this temptation
to think this was very new, very different, but
of course, back to the 18th century, men were
wearing bright and colourful clothing. Whats
really interesting to see is just how influential
Jewish designers were in setting the trends,
many of which continue into todays fashion.
Moses, Mods and Mr Fish: The Menswear
Revolution runs until 19 June at Jewish Museum

2 TRAVEL

JEWISH TO ITS CORE!

Deborah Cicurel makes the most of her Big Apple minibreak, visiting as many shops and eateries as possible

ew York is a Jewish travellers paradise.

With kosher restaurants on every corner, scores of synagogues to pick from
and familiar strains of oy vey, matzo ball and
what a schmuck walking down any street, its
easy to feel right at home just moments after
touching down at JFK.
Visiting for a family barmitzvah, my trip
lasted a short four days: but theres plenty of
history, shopping and eating to pack into even
a fleeting stay.
While in London, the kosher restaurants in
Golders Green Road are delicious enough, the
offerings in New York knock them out of the park
a sad fact for all those of us constantly on the
hunt for a new type of shawarma in the confines
of Golders Green, Hendon and Edgware.
Reserve Cut, a smart kosher restaurant in
Wall Street, offers everything from sushi to
steak but be warned: frequented by suited
and booted bankers on business lunches, the
prices match the clientele.
We were bowled over by the filet mignon, and
the wagyu beef sliders, but our favourite dish
had to be the smoked short rib tacos, which were
quickly snatched up by all, melting in our
mouths, and leaving us begging the manager to
open an equally delicious eatery in London.
We also visited Le Marais, a buzzing kosher
French brasserie just by Times Square packed
with visitors from all over the world and not just
Jews. A Frenchman at the table next to us told
us the place was opened by a non-Jewish restaurateur, whose Jewish friends advised him his style
of eatery would be a flying hit in New York
and so it is. While the entrecote steaks and cte
de boeuf are delicious, my personal favourite
was the steak tartare a rare find for a kosher
restaurant, and just spicy enough without being
overwhelming.
Other eateries worth checking out, which
are not licensed but offer plenty of vegetarian
options, include Machiavelli, on the Upper West
Side, for a fun, relaxed atmosphere, live music
and tasty Italian food, Gemma, in the lower East
Sides Bowery Hotel, for a cosmopolitan menu
and innovative side dishes, and Freds at Barneys,

for people watching and plenty of shopping

close by to work off the calories post-lunch.
Just round the corner from Le Marais in
Midtown Manhattan was my temporary New
York home, the Sheraton New York Times
Square, which has welcomed esteemed guests
from The Beatles to Barack Obama and
which, as New Yorks third largest hotel, is a distinctive feature on the citys skyline.
Comfortable, convenient and recently renovated, the hotel is an ideal place in which to crash
for both business travellers and those looking to
make the most of the city.
In my four-day opinion, the Sheraton offered
the perfect location for curious touristic eyes. In

the centre of all the action without drowning in

the madness of Times Square, its near enough
to countless landmarks including Carnegie
Hall, the Rockefeller Centre and the Museum of
Modern Art so you can explore on foot for
hours and know your base is never far away.
While I could never be described as someone
who prefers walking to sitting in the back of a
nice comfy car, I found that, in the Big Apple,
my favourite mode of transport ended up being
my own two feet and not just because I
wanted to gawp at all the scenery (and pop into
one or two or 10 shops on my merry way).
First, because although taxis were far cheaper
than London, the traffic was often intolerable;
and second, because the subway is absolutely
incomprehensible.

Now I know why New Yorkers are so much

friendlier than Londoners, I thought, after getting lost and going in the wrong direction for
the third time that hour: because there is no
comprehensive method of finding your way
around and, get this, no clear Subway map
everyone, and not just tourists, constantly asks
each other things like: Is this going uptown or
downtown? Whats the next stop? Did the ticket
machine also not work for you?
As a tourist with nowhere in particular to be,
I chalked it up to being part of the experience,
but I think if I lived in New York, Id be a whole
lot fitter and probably just as confused as a
result of walking everywhere.
Finally, the shopping: and what wonderful
shopping there was. I got lost for a good afternoon in the glorious aisles of Century 21, where,
if your arms can bear the weight, and your
patience doesnt wear thin, you can find amazing deals on everything from cashmere cardigans to designer coats at a mere fraction of what
theyd cost in London even in sale season.
I also picked up some great buys in Macys,
where the friendly and in-demand sales assistant Allen not only helped us find some amazing pairs of shoes, but also gave us 50 percent
off all our purchases.
For boutique stores, delicious food stalls and
Instagram-perfect surroundings, take a walk
through Chelsea Market in the achingly cool
Meatpacking District, where everything from
fresh cheese to cute personalised gifts to kooky
trilby hats is waiting to be snatched up.
Nearby is the High Line, along the tree-lined
greenway that was once a disused railroad,
where you can enjoy scenic views of New York
without the traffic, bustle and noise you would
normally experience walking the city roads.
And when you get off the High Line, there are
museums, monuments, musicals and more to
discover, not to mention kosher hot dog stands.
Now, when will those be coming to the UK?
Rates at the Sheraton New York Times Square start
from $199. For details, visit www.sheratonnewyork.

2 ORTHODOX JUDAISM

Torah
for
Today
BY RABBI ARIEL

ABEL

BLACK MARKET gangs in

the Punjab have been selling children to families in
Britain for just over 5,000.
The Sun newspaper reported that the children are
sent here to serve in homes
as cooks and cleaners,
prompting Home Secretary
Theresa May to order an investigation into this report.
So, what does the Torah
say about child servitude?
Let us first consider the
law in this country on the
matter. The Modern Slavery
Act 2015 insists that holding another person in servitude and to require that
person to perform forced
labour of any kind is an offence, and may be determined as an offence
whether or not consent was
said to have been given by
that person, adult or child.
This means that one must
consider not only force,
but coercion to labour as

NEW A-GENDER

What does the

Torah say about... Much can be learnt from Icelands

MODERN
SLAVERY?

criminal behaviour.
Does the Torah agree
with this definition?
Classical Judaism admits
the existence of servitude
in so far as a Jew may own
another human being as one
owns property.
The Canaanite slave, a
reference to any person not
of Israelite stock who is put
on sale at a slave market,
may be purchased by a Jew
according to Mosaic Law.
There is, however, no
trace of slave trading between Jews of non-Jews
it appears that the Torah
presumes that slaves are
sold only by non-Jews.
This point is especially significant as we Jews are descendants of slaves and are
commanded to reject the
cruelty of our oppressors.
Violence against a slave
is not tolerated. Grievous
injury inflicted upon a slave
results in their freedom.
A slave who runs away
owing to ill treatment must
not be returned to his master: he is now free. No slave
may be in any way physically

SOLOMONS
THE PARSHA this week deals with the issue
of pure and impure with respect to human
beings.
There has often been a misconception that
pure means clean.
Of
course,
this cannot be
the case, as with
all impurities
of a spiritual nature,
the cleansing is nothing
to do with cleanliness,
but rather with changing the
status of a person or an item to
make it fitting for the highest level
of ritual use.
On the most basic level, a woman is
forbidden to her husband at certain times
in the month.
Clearly this has nothing to do with her
personal hygiene and, if she observes all the
traditional rituals, she will have a thorough
bath and cleanse herself thoroughly, prior to
entering the mikvah.
More than this, in religious circles, it is customary to view the world through the prism of
purity and impurity.

restrained, and is free to

come and go from the
home.
All slaves of non-Jewish
origin were converted to
Judaism and kept all the
precepts of free person
beholden to running a
home, such as that of a Jewish house-spouse.
This serves to show how
even thousands of years
ago, slaves were regarded
as a member of the family.
Nowadays, the law of the
land prohibits all coercive
work and human trade.
All fellow human beings
should be adopted or employed in a legal fashion
only and not through black
markets of any kind.
This is in the spirit of the
Torah, which reminds us repeatedly: This you shall
remember, for you too were
slaves in the land of Egypt.

Perhaps this is reflective of Kabbalistic

ideas.
Secular culture is said by many in these
circles to reflect many different levels of impurity, and things like film and television make
your house impure.
As this coming week is Shabbat hagadol,
the Shabbat before Pesach, we also remember the symbolism of purifying your own
home of chametz, and the concept of getting
ready for Pesach by raising ourselves to a spiritual height.
In ancient times, we would have eaten the
Paschal Lamb in a state of purity.
Today we eat matzah and marror together
in expectation of regaining these spiritual
heights, and at the same time in the state
of preparation that has been driving all
spring cleaning for the last three weeks.
It is traditional throughout this period
to wish each other a happy and kosher
Pesach. I have heard this criticised
as implying that the person
receiving
the
greeting might
not otherwise
have a kosher
Pesach.
Yet in these
days of universal ritual impurity, the deep cleansing of
our homes and the preparation for
Pesach actually represent in our own
minds a state of purification from the
inflation of the chametzdik pride that
exists during the rest of the year, to create an
island of ritual holiness in our unleavened
homes.

reaction to Panama Papers scandal

BY REBBETZIN CHANA

HUGHES

LIKE MANY others, I have been transfixed by the

Panama papers, a collection of leaked documents that shows Icelands prime minister held
money illegally in offshore accounts which
eventually caused his resignation.
I would love to say that I was shocked by the dishonest behaviour of a person in power, but sadly
I was not. I would love to say that I was surprised
by a politicians hypocrisy or institutional corruption, but sadly I was not. I was, however, astounded
by the massive response of the Icelandic people.
Approximately 22,000 protestors gathered in the
square in Reykjavik on Monday, forcing their prime
minister to resign. As a percentage of the countrys
population, that would be the equivalent of 4.5million Brits attending a demonstration enough to
fill Trafalgar Square more than 200 times.
The question on my mind was why Iceland?
What could be the reason that one in every
20 Icelanders left their sofas for a march in the cold
while holding a banana (a metaphor for Iceland as
a banana republic)?
Do the Nordic people expect more from their
government? Does their Viking past and strong
work ethic mean that they become angrier than
others by laziness and greed? Whatever the reason,
I feel that we would be missing a real opportunity if

we did not learn a lesson from this amazing event.

My teacher and mentor, Rabbi Mordechai Miller
ztl, once taught me a controversial idea. He said
that if one person breaks a social norm, every member of that community is in some way responsible.
Imagine that a guest at Buckingham Palace sat
down to their ceremonial dinner with the Queen
and then proceeded to eat with his fingers and
dribble on the tablecloth.
Every footman in the palace would be called
to task. They would be blamed for not impressing
on the visitor the importance of etiquette around
Her Majesty. They would probably be sent on
training days about the significance of fully honouring Royalty. This is because the stronger a
communitys values and expectations, the less
likely it is that an individual will deviate. And the
stronger the communal response would be if anyone were to break the rules.
Although attending a demonstration is not always the most appropriate response, I admire the
way the people of Iceland were sensitive enough
to be outraged by a politicians dishonesty. Too
often we feel blas when we listen to the news and
hear about peoples cruelty, corruption or betrayal.
Especially as a mother, I feel responsible to
develop a strategy for myself and my family to preserve our values so strongly that we are spurred into
action when we hear about them being neglected.

PERHAPS WE should start by turning this question on its head.

Does Pesach have anything to
really teach us today now we, in the
UK at least, are fortunate and
secure enough to live in freedom?
Should I really turn to my children
on seder night and tell them, in
the words of the Haggadah, that
God rescued me from Egypt and
if they count themselves among
the wicked children, they would not
have also been saved?
Harsh words indeed.
What about the preparation for
Pesach itself; the cleaning and the
sorting, the endless finding of the
stuff we accumulate that we no
longer need?
Is this still valid as an experience
of spiritual preparation? I would say
that you only need to look at the
TV or open a newspaper to see that
this year, more than any other, the
world seems to be gripped by the
experience of exodus.
Not just of one people, but many.
Every time in the weeks over
Pesach I gratefully give away
bags of unwanted and unnecessary
possessions, I cant help but think
about those people crossing land
and sea with only the bags they can
carry on their backs.
When I think about themes
of slavery and freedom, how can
I forget the millions currently running away from the horrors of war

even modern day slavery itself?

Pesach this year seems more
important than ever. In light of the
terrible realities in the world today,
it is time for us all to experience the
festival not just as an opportunity
to connect with our own history and
identities, but perhaps even more
importantly, to act from a natural
and deeply-rooted empathy with
millions of people caught up in this
modern day exodus.
There is some slim archaeological
evidence that the ancient Egyptians called us Hebrews. This
word, Ivri, means those who
cross borders.
I think that this idea of border
crossers, or Ivrim, is as close as you
can get to the word migrants.
I wonder if the word Ivrim in ancient Egypt took on the derogatory
tone that the word migrant seems
to have taken on today?
What might happen when we
start to call the people caught up in
this race for life people instead of
migrants?
This year, join me in beginning
your seder by inviting everyone at
your table to tell their own migration story.
Read the Haggadah through the
lens of what is happening in the
world today.
I think we will find that Pesach,
the seder and the Haggadah itself
will mean more to us than it ever
has.

KARL MARX might seem an odd

or challenging choice for a Jewish hero. Totalitarian communist regimes have inflicted
enormous suffering on people,
but I would assert that no true
expression of communism has
ever been realised certainly
not as how Marx envisions it. I
was drawn to his writings as a
philosophy student, curious
about the clash between the
lofty ideals of communism and
their flawed implementation.
Is he a Jewish thinker? Well he
certainly was Jewish, although,
like many of his time, his relationship with Judaism was a complex
one, coming from an assimilated

family. But as a philosopher, he

was certainly knowledgeable in
Jewish thought and it would be
short-sighted to think that his
upbringing did not have an effect

TACKLING THE
ODYSSEY YEARS
THERES ONE challenge that unites all Jewish
communities whether Liberal or Orthodox, in
London, Leicester or Leeds.
While our congregations are often full of
children or teenagers, once they've finished
their bar/batmitzvah, Kabbalat Torah and Israel Tour, they often disappear.
The lives of people in their 20s and 30s are less
synagogue-focused than in previous generations.
Thats partly because people are marrying and
having children later, or choosing to do neither
much more than before. Young peoples careers,
jobs and location also change more rapidly.
These odyssey years, post leaving home
but before settling down are growing, which
means Jewish community life is changing too.
If I hadnt been an over-keen lover of Jewish
tradition who became a rabbi at a young age,
I might also have been one of these millennials
who didnt go near a shul for years.
My generation, like any generation, looks for
meaning and belonging. At Liberal Judaism
often in collaboration with our sister Reform
movement we have found unique ways to provide that, even if not in a synagogue.
We celebrate the Jewish calendar in welcoming and meaningful ways such as Purim
fancy- dress parties and alternative Pesach
seders as well as offering young people ways
to come together and connect spiritually and
intellectually to their Judaism.
Another strength of the Progressive approach
is our inclusivity around gender, LGBT and
mixed-faith partnerships, which means we can
become a home for Jews who have been excluded from other parts of the community.
Much time is spent worrying about these missing 20 and 30-somethings. But like any Jewish
generation before, we trust in the richness of
Judaism, and our Progressive culture of inclusivity,
to offer meaning and belonging at a time in peoples lives where some are really looking for it.
Rabbi Leah Jordan is Liberal Judaisms student
and young adult chaplain

This week Yon Borthwick,

senior youth development
manager at Reform Judaism,
selects Karl Marx
on his philosophy.
His ideas were vital for his
time and to ours. He lived in a
society with chasms between
social classes, where the economic growth following the
industrial revolution was built on
the exploitation of workers. Many
of these workers were unskilled
and alienated from their means
of production a vast change
from previous industry. He was
one of the first people to analyse
these enormous inequalities and
the unhappiness they caused, inspiring people across the world.
His philosophy, together
with a Jewish tradition that
places enormous emphasis on

tikkun olam repair of the world

makes me question how we
view the goods we consume.
What is it to use an item that
someone has spent their life,
their time on this earth, producing? What impact are we having
on other human beings when
the demands of capitalism is
ever-increasing profits?
Do we really value or appreciate what we buy? Are we just
caught up in a consumerist
cycle of false needs that drive
the wheels of economy?
These are the important questions that Marx raised and they
remain relevant today more
than 100 years after his death.

How to increase sales

conversion rates
Dear Jamie
I run a business making sales from inbound calls generated
by a Google adwords campaign. How can I increase my
conversion rate from calls to sales?
Sam
Dear Sam
If the phone is ringing we need to ensure staff taking calls are optimising the opportunity. Lets look at how this can be done.
1. Record and regularly review call waiting times and abandoned
calls. This data can help identify ways to improve the customer
experience. Changing rotas or multi-skilling staff can help.
2. Staff training on how to convert calls to sales. Call recordings
of the best sales person can be shared in a training session.
3. Introduce a formalised sales process. If we map the customer
journey from the call to a sale and test each stage for effectiveness, we can quickly identify opportunities for improvement.
4. Set conversion rate targets for each team member and review
performance review. Ask for their suggestions on how to improve
and what help they need from you.

Dear Adele
Loneliness can have a devastating impact on the lives of older
people and its on a rise.
Many clients do not necessarily need a lot of help with personal care, support with medication, feeding or manual handling.
However, we have established that some clients need a companion to support them with other daily activities someone they
can chat with. If there is a need for someone like this in your life,
we can help. They will become a trusted, friendly face, someone

The

On the side
IN THE BLACK!
I was lucky to get to Black Roe just off Regent
Street during its soft launch last week. Its Chotto
Mattes little and much better-looking sister. The
elegant interior is dark
and mysterious, with
attractive lighting and
huge black and white
portrait photos of
fishermen and women on
the walls. The signature
dish is poke (pronounced
poe-kay) a kind of deconstructed sushi roll with
the sticky rice at the bottom of the dish and the
fish/meat/veg (marinated and bursting with
different flavours) chopped up into tiny pieces on
top. But it was the hot dishes that blew me away
especially the asparagus tempura, blackened sea
bass and smoky coconut-crusted lamb chops.
I must give a mention to the garlic chips with
Yuzu mayonnaise they were so good we
ordered a second portion! Great cocktails
and desserts (we had ice cream sundae
and a very sticky tarte tatin). Blackroe.com
TASTEFUL KITCH
Following the huge success of his Muswell Hill caf,
Chriskitch (if you havent been then you are missing some
seriously good food), chef Chris Honor is opening a new
restaurant in Hoxton next month. At Chriskitch Hoxton,
Chris unique style of
fusing flavours and
textures into
a mouth-watering
sensation will be taken
to a whole new level
and he will also be
cooking on a Robata
grill. His Australian upbringing,
classical French training and worldwide experiences
have enabled him to create fantastically flavoursome
food that has delighted customers and critics alike.

FABULOUS FILLINGS
The Dumpling House, recently opened in
Temple Fortune, is a perfect pitstop for freshly
made dumplings, steamed or fried, with a
variety of fillings. The delightful Korean owner
makes them all herself. For nondumpling lovers (do they
even exist?) there are
alternatives, including
soup, rice, fish and
meat dishes. Its well
worth a visit.

Oasis
Hippy friends are great. They make you look like a
snappy dresser and they know really cool places to
eat. My mate, Bohemian Bev, had been raving about
a Moroccan restaurant in East Finchley that serves
massive falafel and I felt it only polite to accompany
her and see if they were as big and tasty as she claimed.
From the outside, OASIS looks like a regular eatery,
but step inside and you are transported to a series
of beautifully decorated rooms that open onto a
covered outdoor space.
Every inch is adorned with colourful ethnic
furnishings, the atmosphere is tranquil and theres even
a waterfall to transport you far away from East Finchley
(not literally, you understand). The drinks menu is vast,
comprising bubble tea, juices and mocktails. Theres no
alcohol, but there is a vast selection of shisha.
(I dont get shisha I thought it was a type of kebab.)
Theres a good vegetarian selection and,
by choosing a mezze, we covered our
bases. The food came on an attractive
wooden platter hummus, two types
of aubergine dip, tabbouleh, stuffed
vine leaves, spicy potatoes (I was

delighted when Bev flinched at how

hot they were all the more for me),
cheese briouat (pastries) and yes, very
big falafel balls. All this was
accompanied by home-made bread
that looked like a pillow. Very tasty fare.
Stuffed, we declined dessert, but on

ogling the array of cakes and pastries on

our way out, I kindly bought a piece of
carrot cake for my husband to have later
(I helped him with it and it was delicious!).

THE RESTAURANT CLUB is a Facebook group

with more than 8,000 discerning foodie
members who like to have their say. It now has
a younger sister, The Little Restaurant Club, for
little foodies with big appetites aged 17-30.
The idea is that cooler restaurants will be featured
on the younger group. As one member said:

We all love going to Oslo Court with our

grandparents, but its not a place where
we want to hang out with our friends!
This week, one of the members was off to Tel Aviv
and asked for recommendations. The responses
included:

Shulchan, Ninihatchi, Zepra, Dinings, Social

Club, Kitchen Market and Vicky Cristina.
The Restaurant Club is launching a loyalty scheme!

Now that the sun is finally showing its face (albeit

occasionally), I find myself drawn to sunshiny
places. DICKIE FITZ, with its yellow banquettes,
oversized windows, shiny marble-topped tables
and stunning, large, sparkly dandelion lights, ticks
all the boxes. Upstairs is a smaller, more intimate
room and the simple act of covering the tables
with cloths lends it a sophisticated element
perfect for more formal dining (same food) or
private parties. But its the menu that has the
most sunshine of all. Head chef Matt Robinson
hails from Australia and it shows. Sunny
flavours shine through the creamy and
tangy Thai cauliflower soup, the truffle
mancini (a clever take on arancini that
replaces the rice with mac n cheese
truffle flavoured at that), the tuna tataki
with avocado and ponzu, the steamed
barramundi in dashi broth and the lamb
chops seasoned with sake and mint. Kale,
ginger and garlic is an interesting side dish, but
dont even get me started on the fries (as indeed
I wish I hadnt!). There are more sunny options for

dessert lemon tart, kaffir lime panna cotta with

green apple sorbet, banana bread with sticky
toffee, coconut and ginger.
A great day to go with a group is Sunday, when
theres a feasting menu offering whole-table
choices, such as a large steamed seabass or BBQ
chicken with bottomless veg. Not boring ones
either think roast cauliflower with cheese or salt
baked kumura. The breakfast menu is really
tempting too (courgette fritters with roasted
portobellos and grilled halloumi; buttermilk
waffles with fresh strawberry syrup Im on it!).
The cocktail list is fun my Wakuda Martini was
as pretty as punch and sweetened with yuzu juice.
The wine list is weighted in favour of Australia and
New Zealand and offers some fabulous choices
alongside a few classics.

SHERWOOD
Scrabble ready for
return to glory days
IT WAS only a matter of time before Scrabble clinched the Division Two title, and no one can argue that they dont deserve
it. Nineteen wins from 21 games with just two defeats and
leading the way at the top of the table since day one, their attitude, approach and style of football makes them undisputed
worthy winners. Speaking at the start of the season, manager
Ray Abrahams spoke of reliving their glory days of the 90s,
theyre certainly on the way.
WITH THE first piece of silverware secured, next up for grabs
is the Cyril Anekstein Cup Final on Sunday and its a mouthwatering prospect between two of the big hitters in the Premier Division. North London Raiders A, a win away from
retaining the Premier Division title, will be looking to complete
the first stage of a potential league and cup double, while
Oakwood, who never truly threatened in the League, will be
looking to get their hands on silverware for the first time in a
while
BEITAR JERUSALEM arent labelled Israels most controversial
football team, for nothing. Theyre in the news once again
after they banned Haaretz newspaper journalists from its press
box over its reporting of the clubs alleged anti-Arab racism.
The case has been taken up by the Israeli journalists union
and in parliament, the former saying: We were astonished to
learn that a veteran soccer club like Beitar Jerusalem is excluding Haaretz sports correspondents from its press section at the
stadium. That though doesnt seem to concern the club, who
say if the paper want to cover home matches, their journalists
can buy tickets and stand with other fans. A spokesman
added: Haaretz wont let facts get in their way, we unequivocally dont care if were not covered by Haaretz.

THE VOICE OF JEWISH SPORT

OAKWOOD A warmed up for

Sundays Cyril Anekstein Cup
Final by drawing 2-2 with Redbridge A, meaning Raiders are
now a victory away from regaining the Premier Division title.
David Woolman and Brad
Wine scored for the Os, with
Nathan Sollosi and James
Berkeley earning a point for
Redbridge. Os manager Daniel
Kristall said: It was a really
tough game against a very
strong Redbridge side, it also
keeps us very much in the fight
for second place.
We now move on to Sundays
final and look forward to welcoming back some of the rested and
njured players. On our day were
a match for anyone and will enjoy
the underdog card.
Hendon A moved up to jointthird in the table as Avi Kormans
double and Ethan Zones strike
saw them to a 3-0 win at FC Team
A. Manager David Garbacz said:
This was a really satisfying win
which enabled us to maintain our
momentum, form and confidence heading into the Pesach
break and then the big Cup Final
in a few weeks time.
Woodford Wanderers all but
secured the Division One title as
goals from Elliott Gold and
James Ryan saw them claim three
points at the top of the table in a
2-0 win over Brady. Joint-manager Daryl Kay said: This was
probably our most professional
and solid performance of the
season. We were brilliant, as a
team were the best in the league
and well have to be at our best
to beat FC Team in a few weeks
to clinch the title.
Oakwood B defeated FC
Team A in a seven-goal thriller.
Ben Annis scored twice, with Rafi
Bloom and Anthony Kintish also
on target. Manager Jason Stein
said: Its one of the most pleasing wins we have had all season.

Wagmans
on the mark
Brady A booked their place in
the final of the Henry Swerner
Maccabi Masters League Cup as
two goals from Mark Wagman
saw them beat Raiders 2-1.
Chigwell are a win away from
their first Masters title. Steve
Summers hat-trick, Dean
Nymans double and Adam Stolermans strike seeing them to a
6-0 win over Scrabble.
Division Two champions London Lions ended their season
with a 14th straight win. Danny
Schindlers double, plus Michael
Abraham, Max Radford and Darren Coon strikes helping them to
a 6-0 win. St Johns Wood
Tigers beat Hendon Harriers 62. Jonny Feinmesser scored
twice, with Perry Somers, Adam
Soller, John Perloff and Paul Herszaft also scoring.

Warner warms
up in Sheffield
Dave Woolman (left) scored for Oakwood in their 2-2 draw; Daniel
Lassman (right) found the back of the net for Real Sosobad

Weve got threegames left and I

want the lads to kick on from here
and end the season with another
sevenpoints. Weve now secured
a top-five finish something Im
proud of but now the aim is to
try and finish third.
Real Sosobad moved four
points clear of the bottom two as
two goals from Fabio Rivieccio,
coupled with strikes from Richard
Rosenthal and Daniel Lassman
saw them defeat Brixton 4-1.
Sosobad manager Daniel Shaffron said: We were nearly back
to our old selves today.
London Lions B inched closer
to securing promotion from Division Two thanks to a 6-0 win at
Boca. Daniel Fattal andNick Landesberg scored two each, with
Benji Weinberger and Zak Linden
also on target. Manager Samuel
Marchant said: It was a very positive performance and result after
last weeks slightly disappointing

draw. Next week is second vs

third and well need to be at our
best to get a result we want.
Raiders C are two wins away
from guaranteeing third spot as
goals from Jonathan Rockwerger
and Will Uflandsaw them win 2-1
at Real Hendon.
FC Team C and Temple Fortune played out a 4-4 draw.
Eddie Sternbergs double, together with strikes from Josh
Cooper and Freddie Marks
scored for the hosts. Amir Wiselman scored twice for Fortune,
with Adam Lenzs penalty and
Gideon Wetrin also on target.
Fortunes
player-manager
Jonathan Cohen said: It was a
thoroughly entertaining and
well contested game, we
showed great resilience to come
from behind on three occasions
and that was one of the more
satisfying points we have picked
up all season.
