aniline point

No. of experiment: 4
Date: 2/5/2016
Introduction
Aniline Point "aniline point temperature," Lowest .temperature (F
or C) at which equal Volumes, of fresh aniline (C 6H5NH2) and an
oil are, completely miscible(form a single phase).
The value gives an indication of the aromatic content of diesel oil,
since aniline is an aromatic compound which is dissolved on
heating by the aromatics in diesel oil. The greater the aniline
point, the lower the aromatics in diesel oil. A higher aniline point
also indicates a higher proportion of paraffin.

Whats aniline:
An organic base belonging to the phenyl amines.
It may be regarded as ammonia in which one hydrogen atom has
been replaced by the radical phenyl.
It is a colorless, oily liquid, originally obtained from indigo by
distillation, but now largely manufactured from coal tar or
nitrobenzene as a base from which many brilliant dyes are made.

apparatus and materials:

1.test tube. Approximately 25 mm in diameter and 150
mm in length made of heat resistant glass.
2.stirrer, manually operated, metal. Approximately 2 mm
in diameter
3.stand and clamp
4.water bath.
5.thermometer
6.aniline

Procedure:
1.Clean and dry the apparatus and put 10 ml of aniline and 10 ml
of sample in tube.
2.Set the position of stirrer and thermometer
3.Adjust the voltage on the lamp until just enough light is given
for the filament tube visible through the film.
4.Raise the temperature of the mixture at a rate of 1 to 2 C/min.
5.Aniline point is denoted by sudden brightening of the filament
and by the disappearance of the interface
6.Cool it down after further heating by 10-15 C and reappearance
of film interface is noted.

1.Why the aniline point gives an indication of the

composition of the sample?
used in some stipulations to indicate the aromatic content of
oils and to calculate near heat of combustion.

2.What is the significance of the aniline point

test?
Aniline point is defined as the lowest temperature at which equal
volumes of anhydrous aniline and oil mix together. Aniline being an
aromatic compound freely mixes with aromatic so a low aniline point

indicates low diesel index (because of high percentage of aromatics).

Significance: High aniline point indicates that the fuel is highly
paraffinic and hence has a high Diesel index and very good ignition
quality. In case of aromatics the aniline point is low and the ignition
quality is poor. This test is useful for calculating Diesel Index
