and apartment buildings, its thriving central business district, its extensive public transportation
system, and its more than 400 distinct neighborhoods. The citys concert house, museums, galleries,
and theaters constitute an ensemble of cultural richness rivaled by few cities. In 2000 the population
of the city of New York was 8,008,278; the population of the metropolitan region was 21,199,865.

This text is for question no. 30 32
One day I flew from Denpasar to Makassar. I went with Kevin and Kethryn. Kevin is the
Project Manager for Kangguru Radio English and Kathryn is the Program Officer for AusAID.
The flight was about one hour. We started to descend and the landing gear made a loud POP
sound.
I was a little worried. The pilot said something over the intercom in Bahasa Indonesia. I didnt
understand him. I asked someone sitting near from me for a clue. He looked anxiously back at me
shaking his head. There was no comfort there. The flight attendants looked scared, too.
Where was Kevin when I needed him? I glanced back at Kethryn. All the color had drained
from her face. She was clutching the armrest of her seat and shaking her head with her jaws clenched.
Again, the pilot said something in their mysterious language. This time, instead of the POP sound,
there was a nice gentle creaking and a slight shudder as the landing gear dropped. I looked out the
window and could see the tires my side of the plane lowering. I felt a little weak in the knees.
I realized I had been holding my breath for quite a while. As I drew in a deep breathe, we gave
each other a shaky smile as the plane bounced along the landing strip. We had made it!
30. Where did the story happen?
A. At the airport
B. On a plane
C. In Denpasar
D. In Makassar
E. In Australia

31. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. The flight was only about an hour.
B. The writer was a little worried.

When a ray of light passes from one transparent substance into another, such as from air into
glass, it is bent. This bending, called refraction happens because light moves at different speeds in
different substancesand makes things appear in different places.
You may have noticed that a swimming pool looks as if it is not as deep as it really is and fish in
a lake or a river appear to be nearer the surface than they really are. The reason for the illusion is that
light rays travelling from underwater objects do not move in the same direction when they emerge
through the surface and into the air.
A similar effect occurs when light rays pass from air into water. The angle between the incoming
ray and the normal (a line at right angles to the surface) is called the angle of incidence. Below the
water surface, the angle between the light ray and the normal is called the angle of refraction. When
light enters a denser medium, as when it travels from air into water or into glass, the angle of
refraction is less than the angle of incidencethe ray is refracted toward the normal. When light travels
from one medium into a less dense medium, as from glass into air, the angle of refraction is greater
than the angle of incidencethe ray is refracted away from the normal.
Refraction can have some strange effects, for example, a drinking straw placed in a glass of
water. The straw appears to bend below the surface. That is because light rays travelling from the
straw and leaving the surface are refracted away from the normal. Another example is setting sun,
when the air near the surface is denser than that above it. Light rays from the sun are refracted as they
pass through this denser air. Again, looking back along the refracted rays, we see the sun in a different
position. As a result, we appear to be able to see the sun even when it has dropped below the horizon.
Adapted from: John O.E. Clark. Physics Matters! Volume 4: Light, Denbury, Grolier Education,
2001.
33. When is the angle of refraction greater than the angle of incidence?
A. When light enters a denser medium.
B. When light travels from the same dense of medium.
C. When light travels from one medium into a less dense medium.
D. When light falls to enter a denser medium because there is an obstacle.
E. When light travels from the same dense of medium because there is an obstacle.
34. The following are the examples of refraction, according to the text, EXCEPT.
A. a straw in a glass of water appears to bend below the surface.
B. a mirror reflects a light ray from an object.
C. fish in a lake appear to be nearer the surface than they really are.
D. a pool appears to be shallower than it really is.
E. we are able to see the sun when it has dropped below the horizon.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain why light travels fast.
B. To explain how light is produced.
C. To explain kinds of light movement.
D. To explain how refraction happens.
E. To explain bent and continuous light.
36. Where is the angle of refraction?
A. Above the water surface, between the light ray and the normal.
B. Above the water surface, between the incident ray and the normal.
C. Below the water surface, between the light ray and the incident ray.
D. Below the water surface, between the incident ray and the normal.

The following text is for questions 37 to 40

Should Performance Enhancing Drugs be Accepted in Sports?
The issue of using drugs to enhance athletes performance is controversial. Those who agree to
the use of drugs in enhancing performance say that most top players in all sports take drugs to train
harder and feel no pain during play. The trainers, sports doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists and
managers of the big names make sure banned substances are taken at the safest and most efficient
levels. The main effect of banning such substances has turned performers and their coaches into liars
and cheaters.
On the other hand, some still believe that performance enhancing drugs in sport should be
banned. Performance enhancing drugs are not only prohibited because they violate the spirit of sport,
but they can because damage the health of the athletes.
I think the idea of allowing them in sport could lead to a situation whereby sportsmen and women
are used as human guinea pigs for a constant flow of new, unregulated substances.

37. What is the writers intention to write the text?

A. To persuade the readers to agree with the issue.
B. To influence the readers to oppose the issue.
C. To describe performance enhancing drugs.
D. To entertain readers with the issue.
E. To expose the readers with the issue.
38. What argument is given by those who disagree with the use of performance enhancing drugs?
A. Athletes health is badly affected.
B. Guinea pigs are awfully needed.
C. Athletes consume more drugs.
D. Athletes obey the rules.
E. Athletes perform better.
39. According to the proponents of performance enhancing drugs, the effect of banning them is that
performers become ----.
A. losers
B. winners
C. cheaters
D. hooligans
E. supporters
40. What does the writer feel about the performance enhancing drugs?
A. Neutral.
B. Positive.
C. Negative.
D. Pessimistic.
E. Encourage

In their latest paper, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, Prof. Philip Munday and
colleagues report world-first evidence that high CO2 levels in sea water disrupts a key brain
receptor in fish, causing marked changes in their behavior and sensory ability. They began by
studying how baby clown and damsel fishes performed alongside their predators in CO2 enriched

water. They found that, while the predators were somewhat affected, the baby fish suffered much
higher rates of attrition.
Our early work showed that the senses of smell of baby fish was harmed by higher CO2 in
the water, meaning they found it harder to locate a reef to settle on or detect the warning smell of
a predator fish. But we suspected there was much more to it than the loss of ability to smell,
says Prof. Munday. The team then examined whether fishs senses of hearing which are used to
locate and hone in on reefs at night, and avoid them during the day was affected. The answer is,
yes it was. They were confused and no longer avoided reef sounds during the day. Being attracted
to reef during daylight would make them easy meat f or predators
Their work showed the fish also tended to lose their natural instinct to turn left or right which
is an important factor in schooling behaviour which also makes them more vulnerable, as lone
fish are easily eaten by predators. Prof. Munday further explains, All this led us to suspect it
wasn't simply damage to their individual senses that was going on -but rather, that higher levels
of carbon dioxide were affecting their whole central nervous system.

41. What is the writers purpose in writing the passage ?

A. To investigate the increase of carbon dioxide level in sea water.
B. To contrast the influence of carbon dioxide on predators and fish.
C. To predict the impacts of poor senses of fishes on coral reefs.
D. To inform the effects of high carbon dioxide in sea water on fish.
E. To argue over the agility of fish exposed to high carbon dioxide.
42. Paragraphs 2 and 3 are related in that the first ... .
A. argues for causes; the latter deals with conclusion.
B. Describes loss of senses; the latter loss of reactions.
C. Deals with causes; the latter presents further evidence.
D. Theorizes the role of O2; the latter describes the effect.
E. Lists the results of the study; the latter explains the results.
43. The word them in ... and avoid them during the day ... (paragraph 2 line 9) refers to ... .
A. CO2levels
B. predators
C. baby fish
D. the team
E. reefs
44. The following is relevant with the idea of the role of the fishs senses and instinct described in
the passage except... .
A. mice avoid poisons by smelling it.
B. Dogs sniff rubbles to identify disaster victims.
C. People recognize others from their voices.
D. Babies learn to speak by imitating sound.
E. Pigeons send letter to an address.
