in assisting children to communicate; In the
1950’s the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in
the Southern Jurisdiction of the United
States initiated the Scottish Rite Aphasia
and Dyslexia Program. The results
obtained from this Program have led to the
establishment of the Scottish Rite
Childhood Language Development Centers
in the Southern Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite
Freemasonry. In the 170 plus Centers in the
Southern Jurisdiction children are provided
with treatment for language disorders. To
hear—to speak---to understand; these are
the basic steps of Language development in
the young child’s mind. Yet, these are nor-
mal, healthy pre-school age children who
are shut off from communication. These
children have language problems that arise
from various reasons, problems that affect
the rich and the poor alike. It is estimated
that 10% of children in the United States
have speech and other learning disabilities.
Scottish Rite Masons in Kentucky
stepped up to the plate in 1985 and
answered the call to help, aid and assist
children with Language Development.

Kentucky since 1852.

greater respect for philosophy and a never-
ending love for our Mother Lodge. It
inculcates patriotism, love for the Flag of
our Country, respect for law and order and
undying loyalty to constitutional govern-

Kentucky that is located in the Scottish Rite
Temple, the children are under the supervi-
sion of the Speech Pathologist of Mathis &
Wempe Therapy Associates, the West
Kentucky Center opened in the early 1990’s.
The Center in Lexington opened in the
early 1990’s, the children are under the
supervision of the Speech Pathologist locat-
ed with Horn, Richardson and Associates.
It is our MISSION in Kentucky Scottish
Rite Freemasonry to provide treatment
Centers for our young pre-school age chil-
dren between the ages of 2 to 5 years who

Becoming a Shriner
People often think of Shriners as the men with the funny hats who
participate in parades and circuses. That’s true, but there is much
more.
When you become a Shriner, you become part of a brotherhood of
men committed to family, engaged in ongoing personal growth, and
providing care for children and families in need. While our back-
grounds and interests may be diverse, what binds us together are
shared values and a desire to have fun, do good and build bonds that
last a lifetime.
Shriners are a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic
principles of brotherly love, truth and relief. Throughout history both
the Freemasons and Shriners have had a reputation for secrecy, but
our mission is straightforward. Shriners are committed to:

bers, their families and their friends in a spirit of fun, fellowship
and social camaraderie.

There are many social events and activities at Kosair Temple—
dinners, dances, parties, tours, conventions, parades, picnics and, yes,
the annual Kosair Shrine Circus. Not only is the circus a grand event
for the family and general public, but also, ticket sales enable the
Shrine to take to the circus, free of charge, thousands of children each
year that could not otherwise afford to go.
Kosair also operates a restaurant and club that is open on week-
days for lunch. Dinners are held on Friday nights and the club pro-
vides catering services for events.
