Whatisurinetherapy?Howdoesitwork?
Urinetherapymeansusing(yourown)urineexternallyorinternallyasawaytopromote

Sometimeago,myattentionwasdrawntoanarticleinthereputableEnglishweekly
journalTheNewScientist.ItwasabouttheresearchdonebytwoAustralianscientistsinto
drinkingmorningurinebyIndianyogi'sanditspossiblepositiveeffectonmeditation
practice.Thehypothesisisthatthismightbeduetoahormonefoundinmorningurine
calledmelatonin.

UrinetherapyintheWest
Apartfromtheseeffectswithinmeditationcontext,theuseofurineisverypracticalasfar
ascuringallkindofailmentsanddiseasesisconcerned.Thispracticehasbeenknown
allovertheworldandinmanycultures.TheGreeksandRomanswereacquaintedwith
theuseofurineasamedicine.Butalsolaterinhistorytherearemanyreferencestourine
asbeinghelpfultocombatillnesses.AgoodexamplecanbefoundinamajorGerman
encyclopedia(JohannHeinrichZedler'sGrossenVollstndigenUniversallexikon,1747),
inwhichtheauthoroffersthefollowingtipsconcerningtheuseofurineasmedicine:
"Usefulsubstancescanbefoundinhumanaswellasanimalurine...Humanurinehas
strengtheningandcurativecharacteristicsconcerningmanydeficiencies:
"Forexample,amixtureofpotatoandsulphurpowder,mixedwithheated,oldurine
helpsagainsthairloss.Oneshouldrubthismixtureintothescalpthisslowsdownlossof
hair(calf'sgallcanbeaddedifnecessary).
"Onecanbesthealinjuriestotheeyeswithhoneydissolvedinthelightlyboiledurine
fromayoungman.Oneshouldwashtheeyesasoftenaspossiblewiththisfluid.
"Allkindsofthroatinflammationcanbehelpedbygarglingwithurinetowhichabitof
saffronhasbeenadded.
"Tremblinghandsandkneescanbehelpedbywashingandrubbingone'sownwarm

InthiscenturyitwastheEnglishmanJohnArmstrongwhowastheurinetherapypioneer
withhisworkandwithhisbookTheWaterofLife,famousbothinWestandEast.
Armstrongrealizedthatthepowerfulmedicalworldentertainedotherideasaboutthe
usefulnessofurine.
Evenso,hewasexceptionallypersistentinhisconvictionandenthusiasmconcerning
urinetherapy,probablybecausethroughurinetherapy,hecuredhimselfoftuberculosis
whichhadbeendeclared'incurable'.
Armstrongbeganurinetherapyafteralongandagonizingjourneyinwhichdoctorafter
doctorprovedunabletocurehimofhisTBsymptoms.Onthecontrary,hisconditiononly
worsened.Hedecidedtotryurinetherapyfortworeasons.Firstofall,aquotationfromthe
Biblestimulatedhiscuriosity:"Drinkwaterfromyourowncistern,flowingwaterfromyour
ownwell."(TheBookofProverbs5:15)Secondly,hehadchildhoodmemoriesofhis
mothersmearingurineonhisfacewhichwasswollenfromabeesting,andofhis
grandfathertreatinganimalswithurine.Recently,alotofbookshavebeenpublishedon
urinetherapy,especiallyinGermany,andsomeofthosebookshavebeenwrittenby
regulardoctors.Thisshowsthatthereisadevelopmenttowardsalittlebitmore
understandingandacceptancefrompeopleworkingwithintheregularmedicalfield.
Theauthorsofthesebooksshow,justlikeArmstrongdid,howversatiletheapplication
possibilitiesofurineare.Itworkswondersinmanyminorproblemsanddiseasessuchas
earandeyeinfections,burnsandbruises,allergicconditions(hayfever),fungus
infectionsoftheskin,warts,etc..Butitalsocanhelptheimmunesystemtocopewith
moreseriousconditionssuchaschroniccolds,flu,stomachproblems,bronchitis,etc..
Furthermoreithasprovenveryhelpfulinthetreatmentofanumberofveryserious,
immunerelateddiseases,suchaschronicandsevereallergies,asthma,cancer,M.E.and
AIDS.Inthesecasesitdiddefinitelynotalwaysleadtolongtermhealingresults,butit

Let'sgobacktotheIndianhistory,whereevenmucholdertextsdescribingthepracticeof
urinetherapyareavailable.Apresumably5,000yearolddocumenthasbeenfound
whichdescribesthepracticeofurinetherapyindifferentrespects.Inthisdocument,there
aremanyreferencestoherbsandmedicinesstillusedinpresentdayAyurveda.This
documentconsistsof107verses(slokas),iscalledShivambuKalpaVidhi('themethodof
drinkingurineinordertorejuvenate'),andispartofadocumentcalledDamarTantra.
(TheentiretextcanbefoundinChapter7ofTheGoldenFountain)Shivambuliterally
meansthewaterofShiva,thehighestgodintheIndianpantheon.ThenameShiva
meansauspiciousness.InIndia,atleastamongurinetherapists,oneoftenspeaksof
drinkingShivambu,whichsimplymeansdrinkingthewaterofauspiciousness.Theyalso
sometimesjokinglyrefertoitas'MorarjiCola',asIndia'sformerprimeministerMorarji
Desaiusedtopracticeurinetherapy.HeopenlyadvocatedthistherapyandsaidIndia
wouldbewelloffwhenmorepeoplewouldusethisextremelyinexpensiveandeffective
wayoftreatment.ThesearetheopeningversesoftheDamarTantratext,inwhichthegod
ShivabeginstospeakwithhiswifeParvati:
Verses14:
"OhParvati!(TheGodShivaspeakstohiswifeParvati.)Thosewhopracticethismethod
canenjoythefruitsoftheirmeditationandthismethod.Forthis,certainactionshavebeen
recommendedalongwithcertaintypesofutensils.TheShivambuistobedrunkfrompots
madeofgold,silver,copper,brass,iron,tin,glass,earth,bamboo,bones,leather,ora
bowlmadeofplantainleaves.Theurineshouldbecollectedinanyoneoftheabove
mentionedutensilsandshouldbedrunk.However,earthenpotsarethebestforuse."
Practicalinstructionsaregivenonhowtocollectandingesturine,andadviceonwhatis
besttoeatifyoudrinkyourownurine.Ithastobekeptinmind,however,thatthis
documentwaswrittenforthosewhopracticeyoga,workintensivelywiththeirbodyand
soulandadapttheirfoodtothislifestyle.Nevertheless,thefollowingversecontainssome
helpfulgeneralguidelinesforeveryonewhousesurinetherapy.
Verse5:
"Thefollowerofthetherapyshouldavoidpungent,saltyingredientsinhismeals.He
shouldnotoverexerthimself.Heshouldfollowabalancedandlightdiet..."
Urinewasequatedwithadivinedrinkwhichhadthepowertoexterminateallkindsof
illnessesandailments.Thefollowingversesuggeststhatphysicalpurificationis
connectedwithalifeofmeditation.
Verse9:
"Shivambuisadivinenectar!Itiscapableofabolishingoldageandvarioustypesof
diseasesandailments.Thefollowershouldfirstingesthisurineandthenstarthis
meditation."
Assaidbefore,drinkingurineisnottheonlywaytoapplyurinetherapy.Anumberof
versesdiscusstheimportanceofmassagingwithurine.Forexample:
Verse48:
"Shivambushouldbeappliedtothewholebody.Itisexceptionallynourishing,andcan
relieveallailments."
Verse87:
"OhParvati!IfhemassageshisbodythriceadayandnightwithShivambu,his
countenancewillbeshiningandhisheartwillbestrong.Hisbodyandmuscleswillbe
strong.Hewillfloatinpleasure."
Thislasttextisspecialbecauseitconnectsphysicalpurificationwithpurityofspiritand
stateofmind.Verse87isanespeciallygoodexampleofthisbelief.Thehormonal
componentseemstohaveapositiveeffectonthestateofmind.Variouspeoplewith
whomIhavespokenfeltnoticeablymoreemotionallystable,highspiritedandvitalafter
theystartedurinetherapy.Probablythispartlyhassomethingtodowiththe
aforementionedhormonemelatonin.
OtherancienttextswhicharepartofthereligiousandspiritualheritageofIndiaalso
containfragmentsaboutandrefereithertourinetherapyorto'amaroli'('nectarof

Ifitisnotpossibleorsafetostoptheuseofcertainmedicines,startwithtakingafew
dropsofurineinternallyoruseahomeopathictinctureorgentlyrubfreshurineintothe

Overtheyears,urinetherapyhasprovedtobeaneffectivetoolforhealing.Mosturine
therapists,someofwhomhavebeenpracticingurinetherapyfordecades,havenever
soughtanexplanationforwhyitworks:theirownexperiencesweresufficientproof.For
sometimenow,however,therehasbeenincreasinginterestinthesearchforascientific
explanation.Thisisbecauseurinetherapistsbelieveitisimportantforurinetherapytobe
acknowledgedasavalidmethodoftreatment:doctorsshouldbewellinformedaboutthe
effectsofthistherapysothatasmanypeopleaspossiblecanbenefitfromit.Since
membersofthemedicalworlddemandanexplanation,theinterestinscientificresearch
hasgrown.
Anotherreasonforthisgrowinginterestisthatanumberof'mainstream'doctorshave
alsohadpositiveexperienceswithurinetherapy,whichisreasonenoughforthemto
investigatehowandwhyitworks.Thisisnotarecentdevelopment:inthe1930's,for
example,theGermanpediatricianMartinKrebssuccessfullytreatedmanypatientswith

Asaphysician,hewasconvincedthaturinetherapywasaneffectivemethodoftreatment,
buthealsorealizedthatotherdoctorswouldnotreadilyacceptthisfactsinceitconflicted
withthescientificdogmawhichformedthefoundationoftheirprofession.
Agooddealofresearchhasalreadybeenconductedwithinthemedicalworldintothe
compositionofurineanditsseparatecomponents.TheresearchersFreeandFree
publishedareportlistingtwohundredsubstancesfoundinurine.Theypointoutthat
theseareonlythemostsignificantsubstances,andthaturineprobablycontains
thousandsofcomponents.
Severalsubstancesfoundinurineseemtobeofvalueasmedication,someofwhich
havealreadybeenprocessedandusedassuch.Thefactthatcertainindividual
componentsofurineareeffectivedoesnotprovethaturinetherapyiseffective.
Conversely,however,itcanbeassumedthatthecomponentswhichhaveaparticular
effectasanindividualsubstance,havethesameeffectwhentakenasacomponentof
urine.Incertaincasesitcouldbeimaginedthatthecombinationofthesesubstanceswith
othercomponentsofurinereducesorcancelsouttheeffectiveness,butthisisnotthe
mostobviousconclusion.Wecan,therefore,reasonablyassumethatifanindividual
substancedisplaysacertaincharacteristic,itwillalsohavethischaracteristicasa
