welcoming to all, we, the community of St. Philip Neri, strive to
reach out, to reconcile and to promote unity for all Gods
creations through worship, education, and service toward the
common good.

SECOND COLLECTIONS
- This weekend we take up the Catholic Charities Collection.
- Next weekend we will take up our monthly collection to
support our children in Catholic Schools. This money helps
to cover the tuition subsidy the Archdiocese requires each
parish to pay for each child registered from our parish.

LOST & FOUND

Do you ever get home and think you left something at church? Glasses,
umbrellas, phones, jacket? These are often found and turned into the office
If you have lost something, give the office a call, 503-231-4955. Currently have
an umbrella and pair of glasses. We keep items for a month but then they are
taken to Goodwill.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
There is much to be done in the offices and in the priest residence as we
prepare for the Paulists leaving in June. We are looking for volunteers in the
front office to help: cover phones, the window, etc. in the coming weeks. If
you have some time you can spend in the office, please call Rose or Jeanne in
the office to let us know when you can come in. No experience needed well
show you all you need to know!

Ascension of the Lord May 8, 2016

Pastoral Corner
Greetings!
Happy Mothers Day to all of you who nurture others! Thank you for the time and effort you extend to all of us!
This weekend we also celebrate the Ascension of Christ into heaven. And, yes, in the not so distant past (40
years)--we did celebrate this Feast Day 50 days after Easter and that would have been last Thursday. In some parts
of the world it is still celebrated on that day. However, many of us celebrate it on this Sunday to accommodate more
people attending this special day.
Luke provides two versions of the Ascension: One in his Gospel and one in the Acts of the Apostles which he also
wrote. In Acts, Jesus ascends at the end of 40 days after a series of appearances to the apostles/disciples. In the
Gospel of today---the Ascension occurs on the day of the Resurrection after Jesus visits the apostles in Jerusalem in
the room where they are staying together. The verses just prior to this selection tell us that when Jesus was with the
apostles---he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures and he especially focused on two points: The Messiah
had to suffer and rise again to new life, and---that the Gospel of repentance/forgiveness should be preached to the
entire world. Both of these points are critical as the apostles and disciples start witnessing to others.
THEN-in the GospelJesus leads his disciples to Bethany, raises his hand, blesses them and parted from them
and was taken up to heaven. Stunning to say the least. Luke concludes this scene with the disciples offering homage
to Jesus and returning to Jerusalem, with great joy. He adds, they were continually in the temple praising God. To
Lukethis was the beginning of the believing community. They had witnessed the risen Lord and were blessed by
him before he left. He also told them he would send the promise of my Father upon you -- the Holy Spirit.
Jesus has left; the Spirit has not come yet. How would this community hold together without Jesus in their midst
to settle disputes among them and keep them focused on the mission he gave them before he departed -- to be
witnesses to his life, death and resurrection? So, while Lukes story of the Ascension ends well and on a hopeful
note, the disciples must have felt the way we do when we have to face challenges in life -- when witnessing to Christ
requires sacrifice or we face challenges to our faith. Believing/ trusting arent always easy -- especially when Jesus
seems absent.
What happens? Next week, the Rest of the Story as Jesus sends the Holy Spirit at Pentecost!
Deo Gratias,

Barbara Marie Harrison

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC

HECKER, FOUNDER OF THE PAULIST
FATHERS
For as Christ is perfect God and perfect man in a single
Personality, so a perfect Christian is one who unites a
complete action of divine grace with a complete cooperation of human nature in one personality. A saint
is a man who is prompted in all his actions by the divine
instinct of the Holy Spirit. [On the Mission of New
Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another
person who is ill, and you believe something miraculous has
happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at 202269-2519 and tell him your story.
