Task 3
In task 3, we test the connectivity of the physical connection from computer to the server and to
another computer connected to switch. Then, we need to connect to the internet sources by using
dynamic protocols as the current network. The current network was connected to the internet
resources then DOS command which are ping, tracert and netstat has been used to test the
connection.

INTRODUCTION
In this Voice and Data Cabling lab exercise we have done an exercise regarding on Network
Cabling Testing And Commissioning. This exercise involving three tasks which are task 1 to
connect the server to the switch, task 2 to configure the PC in order to allow communication with
the server and participate in the network and task 3 to test the connectivity of the physical
connection from PC to the server and to another computer connected to the switch.

EXERCISE REPORTS
Task 1
In task 1, we are required to set up the connection from the client to the server. We connected the
cable from the client to the patch panel 2 on rack 1. From the patch panel 2 we connect the cable
to the patch panel 1 then straightly connect to the patch panel 1 on rack 2.After that we connect
the cable from patch panel 1 on rack 2 to the switch. From the switch we connect the cable back
to patch panel 1 on rack 2,from patch panel 1 on rack 2 to the patch panel 1 on rack 1,then from
patch panel 2 on rack 1 to the face plate and the last one we connected the cable from the face
plate to the server. You can refer the connection in the sketch 1. Please take note that every
connection must use straight-through cable. The mistake when cable connection will cause
unable connection problem. After settle the connection process, we can test the connection from
end of the both side by using cable tester to make sure the connection(data flow) occurred. After
done the configuration process, we need to turn on the switch if else the network status will not
move to up. Then we can observe that the signal will change from orange to yellow within 12
seconds to 20 seconds. The yellow signal means that the switch is ready to use. After that, as
same as switch, it can be seen that the light is blinking from orange to yellow on our RJ45
connection port on the computer.

Sketch 1: connection for client to server

As the rough view of these lab 3, the distance of the server to my computer is about 29m long.
The calculation was shown below.

Sketch 2: estimation distance of cable

Calculation(4m x 2) + (3m x 3) + (5m x 2) + (0.5m x 4) = 29m

Task 2
For this task, we are required to configure the setup of the clients and server manually. We
configure the connection by using IPv4 on LAN connection. The network address given can be
referred in table 1.
The number of ip address for clients are given base on position in class. So I need to set up my
computer to 10.100.0.2 255.255.0.0 as I am at second position in my class. We can see when we
open the IPv4 properties that the configuration in my computer was set as dynamic
configuration. We can refer in figure 1. We adjust the configuration and set to static IPv4
configuration as shown in figure 2 to settle the task 2 exercise.

Figure 1: standard(dynamic) IPv4 configuration

Figure 2: static IPv4 computer configuration

5

Then the server was setted up manually on IPv4 based on table 1 which is 10.100.0.100
255.255.0.0. The set up figure was shown in figure 3.

Figure 3: static IPv4 server configuration

Task 3
After finished task 1 and task 2. We need to test up the connection between the client to the
server ,connection between server to the client and also the connection to the other computer. As
we can see on the figure 4 which is the configuration of the clients and ping test to the server
with the Dos commands while Figure 5 shows the configuration of the server and ping test to the
client. We check the configuration by using the ipconfig means that, used ip configuration and
ping to check the connection between these two devices.

Figure 4: client configuration and ping test to server

Figure 5: server configuration and ping test to client

figure 6: connection to the other computer

8

Base on figure 4,5 and 6 , Microsoft Windows ping outputs four messages - confirmation line,
size in
bytes, time and Time to Live (TTL). bytes means the packet size transmit while
time means the total time to transmit a packet of data. We can see from the figure 4 that 32
packet of data transmit in <1ms. The value of TTL=128 means that the device is on the local
computer without other networks in between. What is TTL? For your information, TTL means
Time To Leave. TTL is a timer value included in packets send over TCP/IP-based networks that
tells the recipients(user) how long to hold or use the packet or any of its included data before
expiring and discarding the packet or data. For DNS, TTL values are used in resource records
within a zone to determine how long requesting clients should cache and use the information
when it appears in a query response answered by a DNS server for the zone. Then we can
continue our ping test from server to the client and client to another client that is connected to the
switch on the rack 1 by using the Dos command. In simple, TTL is the number of networks
which the ping passed through on its way to the target. The connection between the server to the
clint was shown in figure 5.
9

However, it can be noticed that sometimes when we test the ping to the IP, the result we found is
not reachable or request time out. Let me explain one by one. When the result shown the network
is not reachable, the problem may occurred because the pinging process done by wrong ip
address that have been set with the configuration. It also may occurred because of the firewall
setup because this application will block our connection. The last reason is because of wrong
cable used during cable set up process for example mistakenly used straight-through cable for
crossover cable connection. These simple mistakes is the reason why the not reachable problem
occurred. For request time out problem, this problem normally occurred because of the first
pinging where the data normally will receive only 75% of the data transferred. This problem can
be settled by repeating the pinging process where normally after repeating pinging process the
data will successfully receive 100% of the data transferred.

However these problem also may occurred because of hardware problem. For example the wire
is broken, network card problems and also because of hardware burn. When we have done a
wrong hardware installation so we cannot get a good quality of connection. If we got a problem
on the network interface card or known as NIC, it maybe will affect the connection neither
wireless or wired connection. So, we should take care the hardware and make sure the hardware
in good condition if we want the connection process run smoothly.

The next part is to create the connection to the google.com. First of all we need to set up the IPv4
on Ethernet by using dhcp. This is because we do not know what the ip address to ping the
google.com is. So, by using dhcp we are given the default gateway for this connection and we
can connect to the internet by doing this process. In short, it can be conclude that the basic of
pinging between the client to WAN and LAN connection are difference. For LAN connection we
must set the connection to the static connection while for WAN connection we must set to the
dynamic connection.

Figure 7: ping test to google.com

10

The next step is we need to test the connection by using tracert and netstat. What is
tracert? What is netstat? Tracert means traceroute while netstat means network statistic. Figure 8
and 9 is the result of the tracert and netstat to the network. For your information, traceroute
actually is a computer network diagnostic tool for displaying the route and measuring transit
delays of packet across an internet protocol network while netstat is a command-line tool that
displays network connections for the Transmission Control Protocol both incoming and
outgoing, routing tables, and a number of network interface (network interface controller or
software-defined network interface) and network protocol statistics.
11

Base on the tracert result in figure 8, it can be seen that the tracert test to the default
gateway from my UniKL BMI server. Other than that, we can test the tracert to the other network
that we know the network IP address or we can get the network by doing the ping test to the
webpage that we want to get the Ip address on the Dos command.

Figure 8: result of the trace route

12

In simple, netstat means the device that connected to your pc.To test the netstat, the method was
shown in figure 9, which this is the output where the most servers simply waiting for an
incoming connection. We can see condition of the connection whether the connection is occurred
or not by analyse the state column. Established means there is a connection occurred, time wait
means the connection in process while sync sent means no connection occurred.c

Figure 9: result of the network statistic

CONCLUSION
For the conclusion of these lab 3, Firstly we can conclude that the hardware installation is the
main set up to have good quality network but without testing a ping. We can sure the quality of
13

the signal is good about 70% to 75%. Secondly, we can observe that there are two types of
configuration that we can used that is static or manual and dynamic or auto set up and we can
used that in the two types of internet protocols that have been used that is IPv4 and IPv6 but
using IPv4 is more easier and friendly user by compared to IPv6. Finally, We need to test the
connection by Traceroute which is displaying the route and measuring transit delays of packets
across an Internet Protocol (IP) network and Netstat is a command-line tool that displays
network connections for the Transmission Control Protocol. These three test is to check the
quality of the network quality such example is to see how much the data send and received, time
taken, network flowing and others. We can observe the result with ping, tracert and netstat test.
After doing that test we can observe the results is containing the bytes where the bytes means for
Ipv4 or Ipv6, the speed of data that have been transferred and TTL or time to leave value
between server to the computers are good condition or not satisfied with some losses.
