Bible truths really sink in with new Deep Blue Rotation Stations!

Scope and Sequence

Summer 2016Spring 2017

Rotation teaching is popular, and for good reason!

As children move through different learning stations, they
explore each units theme story from many angles for deeper,
more engaged learning. Busy volunteers will love using
their specialized skills without a huge time investmentthey
plan once, then teach the same lesson for several weeks to
different age groups.

Supplies

herever your one-room Sunday school class

gathersin the back of the sanctuary, a
small room, the pastors office, the kitchen, or even
a hallwaythere are some basic supplies you will
need to have available almost every Sunday. The ideal
situation is to collect the basic supplies you think you
will need and keep them accessible every Sunday.

Store them in a cabinet or a closet if one is available;

if not, think about a box in the corner of a room or
under a pew in the sanctuary, or assign a place to keep
some basic supplies in the trunk of your car. Choose
the activities you will use, and provide what will be
needed for just that unit, or collect supplies for one
lesson at a time.

The Basics

scissors

crayons, colored pencils
pencils and pens
markers
construction paper
drawing paper
tissue paper
glue and gluesticks

Beyond the Basics

Check each session for a list of the specific

supplies needed for each activity.
Make a wish list of the supplies you will need for
that unit. Members of your church will be happy
to know how they can support the children in the
church. Publish the list in the church newsletter or
bulletin.
If you have a place to store supplies, encourage the
congregation to bring items such as old magazines,
paper towel tubes, paper grocery bags, envelopes,
or fabric scraps.
If you do not have a place to store things, make a
new list each week of the things you will need for
the next two or three weeks.

SESSION 1

Noah Builds the Ark

Bible Verse
This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all
creatures on earth. (Genesis 9:17)

Did You Know?

fter the creation of humanity, God declared it supremely good (Genesis 1:31). Just
five chapters later, God regretted making human beings on the earth, and he was
heartbroken (Genesis 6:6). God decided to destroy this part of creation. The images of
God here convey sorrow more than anger. God was heartbroken and disappointed. But
there was Noah, whom God approved of. Noah was a good man who walked with God.
So when God decided to destroy humanity, Noah and his family were spared. Although
disappointed with human beings, God acted mercifully in choosing not to completely rid
the earth of humans.
The story of Noah in the Bible isnt the only account of an ancient flood. The first
known cities were built along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the area that is now
the countries of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. Many people lived in the area between the two
rivers. Seasonal flooding of these rivers occurred. Multiple ancient sources contain
accounts of an epic flood that covered the known world.

q Building Words

God tells Noah to build an ark. Unlike some biblical figures, such as Moses, who
negotiated and argued with God, Noah didnt interact with Gods pronouncement.
In fact, throughout the telling of the building of the ark, the loading of
the animals, the flood, the time aboard the ark, and unloading the
ark, none of Noahs words are recorded. After God instructed Noah
to build an ark, Noah had to decide whether to trust God enough
to follow Gods instructions. Noah did everything exactly as God
commanded him (Genesis 6:22). Noah trusted and obeyed God.

SAY: Today we are talking about the life of Noah.

ASK: What do you know about Noah?
Allow children an opportunity to share.

SAY: The Bible says God told Noah how big to build the ark. The ark was so big it would
not have fit in this room! You are going to build a scaled down model of the ark.
Give each child a copy of How Big Was the Ark? and read the information given.
Have each child cut the ark model out, cutting on the solid lines.
Encourage each child to fold the model along all dotted lines.
Have each child use small pieces of tape to tape the edges of the roof of the ark
together and then tape the sides of the ark up.

ASK: What shape was the ark? (long and narrow, shaped like a barge)
SAY: Remember that the ark was 1,000 times as big as the model you have made.

SAY: This month we are raising money for Heifer International, an organization
working to end poverty and hunger around the world. You have a letter to take home
to your parents that explains more about our mission project. Natural disasters
occur around the world every yearearthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.
leaving people displaced from their homes and struggling with basic needs. Heifer
International often partners with communities in disaster areas. In April 2015,
the country of Nepal suffered a large, damaging earthquake. Thousands of homes
were destroyed or damaged, and many livestock animals that belonged to Heifers
project participants were lost or killed. Two weeks later another strong earthquake
caused even more damage. Heifer has created the Nepal Relief and Recovery
Fund to provide money for supporting the families during their long term efforts
to rebuild their communities, replace livestock, and participate in needed training
opportunities. The money you donate will be given to the Nepal Relief and Recovery
Fund.
Encourage your children to write a prayer on the back of the mission project letter.

SAY: Gods power is often seen in nature (Psalm 77:18) as well as Gods promises
(Genesis 9:8-13). Write a prayer thanking God for the gifts of nature, asking for
Gods protection from danger, and seeking Gods help for the people in Nepal.

Talk About Noah Builds the Ark

Look up todays Bible story in your Bible:

Genesis 6:13-22
Use these questions to talk about todays Bible story at home:

How do you think Noah felt when God told him to build an ark?
How do you think Noahs family felt about Noahs instructions from God?
How do you think the world was different before the flood?
Say the Bible verse together:

This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all
creatures on earth. (Genesis 9:17)
Pray:

Thank you, God, for your promise to always love us. Help us to trust and
obey your Word. Amen.

Two of Every Kind

Bible Story

Bible Verse
This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all
creatures on earth. Genesis 9:17

Genesis 7:1-16

Anchor Point
We can trust Gods
promises

Did You Know?

ast week we read about God instructing Noah to build an ark. Noah obeyed God and
now, as the story continues, it is time to fill the ark with passengers. Eight people
would board the ark: Noah, his wife, his three sons, and his sons wives. People were far
outnumbered by animals. We traditionally envision two of each kind of animal on the
ark. In Genesis 7:2, however, God instructs Noah to take seven pairs of each clean animal
and one pair of each unclean animal. Used here, the terms clean and unclean refer to
animals used for sacrifice.
Before the rain started, God set a time limit, assuring Noah the rain would not last
forever. When God told Noah to load the animals onto the ark, God said the rain would
begin in seven days and last for forty days and forty nights. Noahs family spent more
than the forty days and nights on the ark. Including the time it took for the waters to
recede, Noah and his family were on the ark for about a year.
After informing Noah of the plan to flood the earth, God made a covenant with
Noah. In ancient Israel, covenants made between groups or individuals were a way of
life. These agreements, alliances, or treaties were designed to establish loyalty, and
their making was usually marked with some act, such as eating a meal
together or the giving of a gift. The covenant God made with Gods
people was a promise of Gods faithfulness. God is the initiator of the
covenant and requires in return the exclusive loyalty of Gods people.
A covenant with God differs from a covenant between individuals in
that God will always keep the covenant and remain faithful, regardless
of the faithlessness of Gods people. Ultimately, it is Gods mercy
and faithfulness that are responsible for the continuation of Gods
covenant.

Sending Out the Dove

Bible Verse
This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all
creatures on earth. (Genesis 9:17)

Did You Know?

ord, remember your compassion and faithful love . . . they are forever! But dont
remember the sins of my youth or my wrongdoing. Remember me only according
to your faithful love for the sake of your goodness, Lord. (Psalm 25:6-7) Although King
David wrote these words, we can imagine Noah having similar thoughts after spending
a year on an ark with seven members of his family and many animals. And God did
remember! Genesis 8 begins, God remembered Noah, all those alive, and all the animals
with him in the ark.
As the waters began to recede, Noah sent out a succession of birds, one raven and
a dove three times, to determine the condition of the earth. Ancient mariners used
the practice of releasing birds while sailing to test whether they were close to land.
Other ancient flood stories also included accounts of birds being released.
Even though Noah monitored the receding of the waters by sending out the raven
and the dove, this information was ultimately not what determined when Noah, his
family, and the animals left the ark. Just as God told Noah to build the ark and to
load the ark, God told Noah when to disembark. As he had since the beginning, Noah
continued to trust God and obey Gods instructions. The covenant God
made with Noah, and with us, promised Gods faithfulness. Gods
covenant of faithfulness meant God would remember Noah. Gods
covenant extends to us. We can trust in Gods faithfulness, also. In
return, God requires our trust and faithfulness.
Teaching Sunday school is one way you live out your faithfulness to
God. Thank you for the important work you do each week.

SAY: Clay is denser than water. When the clay is in a ball it does not have enough
surface area to float. When you shaped your clay into a bowl or boat shape, it spread
the clay out on the water. Even though Noahs ark was big, it was able to float.

The Rainbow Promise

Bible Verse
This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all
creatures on earth. (Genesis 9:17)

June 26
Bible Story
Genesis 8:209:17

Anchor Point
We can trust Gods
promises.

Did You Know?

fter the flood, God made a promise to Noah and to every living creature that there
would never again be a flood to destroy the earth. In the events leading up to
God instructing Noah to build the ark, God grieved over the wickedness of humankind
and decided to destroy this part of Gods creation. Humankind did not change during
the flood experience. Humans were still imperfect creatures. Gods choice to make a
covenant indicated Gods commitment to the future of a less than perfect world. Even
though human beings have faults, God continues to place confidence in them.
Gods covenant with Noah, and with us, is not dependent on the behavior of
humans. Yes, there are expectations and requirements of us in return for being Gods
people. We have a responsibility to be faithful to God and to live as God wants us to.
When we fail to keep our part of the covenant, God is disappointed. However, God is
the initiator of the covenant, and its continuation depends ultimately on the mercy
and faithfulness of God. When we fail to keep our end of the covenant, which, being
human, we will, God continues to reach out to us. Gods covenant never ends.
God used the rainbow to mark the covenant established with Noah and all living
creatures. God did not create the rainbow for this purpose but gave it a
new significance for the future. The rainbow serves as a reminder to
God of Gods commitment to humankind. The rainbow also reminds
Gods people of Gods constant and never-ending faithfulness.
Gods covenant with Noah is one of many covenants mentioned in
the Old Testament. God also made covenants with Abraham, Moses,
and David. These covenants were made many years ago, yet they
remain pertinent to our lives today. The rainbow reminds us that God
has promised to be our God. We are Gods people. Thanks be to God!

Love

Bible Story

Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Did You Know?

oday we begin a study of the fruit of the Spirit as described by the apostle Paul in
his letter to the church in Galatia. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Just
as apples are the proof of a healthy apple tree, fruit of the Spirit is proof that we follow
Jesus. These characteristics, Paul says, are signs of the Spirits presence within us.
Each week we will look at one fruit of the Spirit listed by Paul. We begin by looking
at love. First Corinthians 13 is sometimes referred to as the Love Chapter. This
chapter is part of a letter Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth when he received
word that they were struggling and arguing among themselves. In the midst of and
integral to this advice are Pauls thoughts on love. Love, Paul says, should be at the
center of the communitys thoughts and actions. Love is an essential element of a
Christians life.
Pauls description of love applies to any circumstance in which love is found. The
love Paul describes begins with God. Gods love claims us and, through us, reaches out
to others. We, who have been loved by God, honor that love by sharing it.
Several Greek words are usually translated into English as love.
Two of themstorge, used for the love between family members,
and eros, referring to sexual desireare not used at all in the New
Testament. Phileo, meaning friendly love or family affection, is used
a few times. However, the Greek word used most frequently, and
the one Paul used in this letter, is agape, the term that refers to Gods
love. Agape is self-giving love. Agape is the love that is patient and
kind, which does not boast and is not envious. This is Gods love and
the kind of love that Gods children are called to show to each other
when we are Spirit-filled.

Bible Verse

Psalm 100:1-5

Bible Story

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Anchor Point
The Holy Spirit helps
me act in good ways.

Did You Know?

e are continuing our study of the fruit of the Spirit as described by the apostle
Paul. This week we take a look at Psalm 100 to explore the topic of joy. Get ready
to make some noise this week as you and your children celebrate God with shouts
of joy!

Your Lesson

Sometimes we equate joy with happiness, and it is true that the two emotions
are similar. However, if God is deserving of our joyful praise, surely that is not true
only when we are happy. Even in the midst of sadness or confusion, it is possible
for joy to exist as the assurance that God is with us in the midst of whatever we are
experiencing or feeling. God is our God and is faithful no matter what. Now theres a
reason to be joyful.

q Make Joyful Noise

Makers

In Psalms we find a reflection of the entire range of human emotion: sadness, joy,
anger, happiness, despair, hope, fear, and trust. This aspect of Psalms provides a
couple of valuable reassurances. First of all, whatever you are feeling, you are not
alone in that experience. One of the psalmists has felt your pain or experienced your
doubt or celebrated your joy. Secondly, you may take any emotion or situation to God
in prayer. It is a good and appropriate thing to offer our entire human
experience to God.

q Joyful Coloring

The structure of Psalm 100 is typical of a song of praise. It begins

with an invitation to praise, followed by reasons for praise. Most
of the psalm is dedicated to the invitation to praise (verses 1-4).
The reason for praise is succinctly stated in verse 5; God is good and
Gods love lasts forever. Just five verses long, Psalm 100 contains an
important reminder. God is our God and deserves our praise. What a
great reason to be joyful!

Peace

Bible Story

Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Did You Know?

he third fruit of the Spirit we are discussing is peace. Todays Bible story is from a
sermon Jesus preached that has come to be known as The Beatitudes. In Matthew,
the Beatitudes are the beginning of a series of Jesus teachings known as the Sermon
on the Mount.
In the Beatitudes, we find instructions for how to live our lives. Jesus tells us what
we need to do to be blessed or happy. In this list of instructions we find a description
of how Jesus followers should live. We also find reassurance that when people treat
us badly or when we grieve, God is with us to comfort and bless us.
The way Jesus teaches us how to live is sometimes different than how the world
tells us to live. This was true of Jesus followers who heard the Beatitudes originally,
and it is true for us today. God calls us to depend on and obey God, and to be humble,
merciful, pure of heart, and peacemakers, even when the world tries to get us to do
otherwise.
The references to peace are frequent in Jesus teachings, so it is not surprising
that peace is mentioned in the Beatitudes. Notice that Jesus followers are not simply
instructed to live in peace but to be makers of peace. We have a calling
to be advocates for peace, to do what we can to make peace a reality,
even when it seems that the world would prefer otherwise. When we
live in peace, we are demonstrating that we are living Spirit-filled
lives.
Children may feel they have a limited ability to be peacemakers.
Help them understand they can work for peace by modeling peace in
their interactions with others. This may be as simple (or as difficult)
as living peaceably with their sibling.

Exploration Points
We can choose to be peacemakers.
Living peaceably shows others we are following Jesus teachings.

Patience

Bible Story

Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Luke 18:1-8

Anchor Point
The Holy Spirit helps
me act in good ways.

Did You Know?

his week we take a look at the fruit of the Spirit, patience. Jesus told the parable
of the unjust judge and the patient and persistent widow. Of the four gospels, only
Luke tells this parable. It is a short story, just eight verses long.
Judges and widows both occupied specific places in ancient Israeli society.
Judges were responsible for settling disputes between Israelites. They had the job
of maintaining harmonious relationships among the people. Judges were to listen
to cases and rule fairly and impartially. It was an important job, as there were no
juries and the decision was the judges alone. Jesus depicts the judge in this parable
as unfair and unjust, describing him as one who neither feared God nor respected
people (Luke 18:2).
The treatment of widows is often mentioned in the Bible. Women whose husbands
had died no longer had the support of a husband, and in the patriarchal society of
the time, few women supported themselves. A widow was not allowed to inherit her
deceased husbands property. Instead the property passed on to the mans sons or
brothers. Therefore, women who were widowed had no means of support. There was
a clear expectation that society would care for widows (and orphans and
foreigners). Those who abused the powerless, such as widows, were
considered particularly despicable.
In this parable Jesus tells about a widow who brings a grievance
before an unjust judge, but he refuses to hear her case. The widow
doesnt give up. Instead she is patiently persistent in approaching the
judge time after time until he finally decides to hear her case. Do not
give up, this parable encourages us, even when patience is required.

Talk About Patience

Look up todays Bible story in your Bible:

Luke 18:1-8
Use these questions to talk about todays Bible story at home:

How do you think the widow felt when she asked the judge repeatedly to
hear her case?
How do people respond when you show them patience?
What is something you do that takes a lot of patience?
Say the Bible verse together:

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Pray:

Thank you, God, for your patience with us. Help us to show that same
patience to others around us. Amen.

The Holy Spirit helps me act in good ways.

Kindness
Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Did You Know?

he fruit of the Spirit we will be looking at today is kindness. Our Bible story is about
the actions of King David shortly after he succeeded King Saul on the throne. In
order to understand the significance of todays story, it is necessary to understand the
practice of kingly succession during the time Saul and David lived. When a new king
took control, it was common practice for him to kill the previous king as well as all of the
previous kings sons and grandsons. The idea behind this practice was that it prevented
one of the previous kings heirs from rising up and claiming a right to the kingship.
Although it would have been cruel, it would not have been thought unusual for
David, once he became king, to kill all of Sauls heirs. Saul and three of his sons died
in battle. Another of Sauls sons was killed in the establishment of Davids kingship.
One of Sauls sons, Jonathan, had been a close friend of David. Jonathan helped
David escape when Saul was trying to kill him. Jonathan and David made a covenant
together. According to the covenant, David promised to show loyalty to Jonathans
descendants and he would never be cruel to Jonathans family.
David learned Jonathan had a son who was still living. Jonathans son,
Mephibosheth, was crippled as a result of a fall that occurred when his
nurse escaped with him after Jonathans death. When David learned
of Mephibosheth, he sent for the boy. When Mephibosheth appeared
before King David, he may have been afraid David would have him
killed. Instead, David honored Mephibosheth by returning some
of Sauls property to him, arranging for servants to take care of the
property, and inviting Mephibosheth to eat at his table every night.
David did not have to be kind to Mephibosheth. Davids friend,
Jonathan, was dead and would never have known whether or not
David kept the promise he made to him. But David chose to be kind.

Goodness

Bible Story

Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Book of Ruth

Anchor Point
The Holy Spirit helps
me act in good ways.

Did You Know?

oday we will take a look at the fruit of the Spirit, goodness, by hearing the story
of Ruth and Naomi. This story begins at a time when there was a famine in Judah.
Naomi and her husband moved to Moab with their two sons.
While in Moab, Naomis husband died. Her two sons got married to Moabite women
named Ruth and Orpah. After about ten years, both of Naomis sons also died, leaving
Naomi with no family to support her other than her daughters-in-law, who were
themselves widows. So she decided to return to Judah.
Naomi urged her daughters-in-law to return to their families as they were under no
legal obligation to stay with Naomi. A widow did not usually stay with her mother-inlaw. At Naomis urging, Orpah returned to her family, where eventually she might have
an opportunity to marry again. Ruth, however, refused to leave her mother-in-law.
Ruth chose to do a good thing. She demonstrated goodness when she showed love
and loyalty to Naomi beyond what would be considered normal or expected.
Naomi and Ruth lived at a time when women did not have many rights. Widows,
such as Naomi and Ruth, had no socially acceptable way to support themselves
other than begging and gleaning. Gleaning refers to the practice of
going through the fields after harvesting has been completed and
picking the unharvested grain. It was the custom at the time for the
harvesters to leave some stalks of grain in the field for poor people
to pick up. Leaving grain in the fields to be gleaned was a way to do
good and help the poor.
Sometimes we tell children to be good. As you are talking about
goodness this week, speak with the children about doing good.
Choosing to do good is a characteristic of a Spirit-filled Christian.

Faithfulness
Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Did You Know?

fter King David, Israel did not fare well when it came to kings. King Solomon, Davids
son began well, asking God for wisdom. But he turned out to be self-serving and
oppressive, and as a result of his unfaithfulness, the kingdom was divided into two
parts: Israel and Judah.
After the split, the kings in the Northern Kingdom (Israel) were all failures. Judah
didnt fare much better. A few of Judahs kings tried to do right by God, like Asa,
Jehoshaphat, and Hezekiah. But even these kings did not uphold the laws of the Torah.
Then along came Josiah. Josiah was only eight years old when he became king.
Josiah received high praise from the writer of Second Kings. He did what was right in
the Lords eyes, and walked in the ways of his ancestor Davidnot deviating from it
even a bit to the right or left (2 Kings 22:2).
During his reign, Josiah ordered the Temple to be restored. During the renovation
of the Temple, the high priest, Hilkiah, discovered an instruction scroll that had been
hidden away. Upon hearing the contents of the scroll read, Josiah was overcome with
grief because he realized the people had not been following Gods laws.
Josiah urged the people to be faithful to God once again. Josiah
then ordered that all religious objects made for Baal be removed
from the temple, and he set out to desecrate all the shrines to false
gods in the areas around Jerusalem. Josiah also ordered the people
to celebrate Passover again as described in the discovered scroll.
Passover had not been celebrated since the judges ruled over Israel.
King Josiah obeyed God with all his heart. He did all that he could
to follow Gods commandments. Josiahs faithfulness to God sets a
good example for us.

Gentleness

Bible Story

Bible Verse

faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Psalm 23:1-6

Anchor Point
The Holy Spirit helps
me act in good ways.

Did You Know?

o talk about gentleness, we turn to Psalm 23, the most familiar psalm and possibly
the most familiar Scripture passage. It is often read at funeral services, but it is
also a psalm about living. This psalm puts ordinary activities like eating and drinking in a
God-centered perspective.
The Lord is my shepherd . . . In ancient times, kings were known as shepherds of
their people. It was the kings responsibility to provide for and protect the people,
though they frequently failed to do so. To profess God as our shepherd declares our
intention to live under Gods reign. Unlike earthly kings, God is a responsible shepherd
and provides life and security for Gods people, so we lack nothing.
The images of resting in grassy meadows, being led beside still waters, and being
guided on the proper path convey a sense of tranquility and gentleness. The primary
intent of these verses is to reinforce that God provides for all our needs and keeps
us alive. For sheep, grassy meadows mean plenty of food, still waters mean having
something to drink, and being on the proper path means danger is absent.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley . . . Even at the most difficult of times,
Gods provision is enough. What is ultimately reassuring in times of
trouble is Gods sovereignty. God is in charge and will take care of us.
God will guide us gently as a shepherd guides his sheep.
You set a table for me . . . The image of a banquet table, complete
with an overflowing cup, reiterates the theme of Gods provision for
us. Everything we need, God will provide. Even more than that, Gods
faithful love will pursue us, not just be with us, but actively seek us
for the rest of our lives. That is a comforting and reassuring thought in
the midst of life and death.

Self-control
Bible Verse
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Did You Know?

his is the last week of our study of the fruit of the Spirit. Today we will discuss
self-control and take a look at the story of Daniel. The Book of Daniel tells about
men who chose to be faithful to God at a time when that was not an easy choice. Daniel,
Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah lived during the period of the Babylonian Exile. They
were living in a foreign land, among people who worshipped different gods and had
different religious practices. The Jewish people had experienced times in their history
when they had been tempted to turn away from God. Being surrounded by other
religious practices and sometimes being persecuted for worshipping God made being
faithful a challenge.
In todays Bible story, King Nebuchadnezzar commanded his palace master to
choose some young Jewish men to be trained to serve in the kings palace. As part
of the Babylonian training, Daniel and his friends were to receive the same food
and wine as the king. Daniel refused, deciding to continue to follow Mosaic food
laws. We are not told the specific issue Daniel had with the kings food. Mosaic laws
allowed the Jews to eat more than vegetables and water! It may be that the meat
and wine being offered had been used in sacrifices to Babylonian gods.
God rewarded the faithfulness of Daniel. He and his friends showed
tremendous self-control and excelled in the training program.
Although the choices are different than those faced by Daniel,
being a Christian often requires having the courage not to conform
to societal pressures. Having the self-control to make good choices is
a characteristic of a Spirit-filled Christian.

Exploration Points
Daniels self-control and faithfulness to God set him apart from
those around him.
The Holy Spirit will help me make good choices and act in good
ways.

ASK: How did Daniel and his friends show self-control? (They refused to eat the
kings food and chose to follow Gods food laws instead.) Do you think Daniel was
ever tempted to eat the kings food? (Maybe. The Bible doesnt say.)
SAY: Daniel chose to stay faithful to God and follow Gods rules even when people
who werent following Gods rules surrounded him. That took self-control! It can be
difficult to follow Gods rules when people around us are doing things differently. If

Talk About Self-control

Look up todays Bible story in your Bible:

Daniel 1:1-21
Use these questions to talk about todays Bible story at home:

H
ow do you think Daniel felt eating vegetables and drinking water when
everyone else was eating the kings food?
In what areas of your life do you need some self-control?
C
an you think of a time when self-control kept you from getting in
trouble?
Say the Bible verse together:

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Pray:

Thank you, God, for showing us the fruit of the Spirit we need in our
lives. Help us live Spirit-filled lives and bear this fruit. Amen.

The Holy Spirit helps me act in good ways.

QUESTIONS

by Leigh Meekins
Children learn by asking and answering questions. These questions can be yes or no questions, questions that ask
for details, or questions that will help them dig deeper. In the Talk About... pages at the end of the Sunday school
sessions, questions of wonder about the Scripture story are included for parents to discuss with their children.
So what are wonder questions? They are designed to invite the children into the thoughts of others. We ask questions
to encourage the children to dig deeper into the Scripture story. Such questions ask them to think about the feelings
and thoughts of others. Sometimes these questions are difficult to answer and require time to process. Wonder
questions should not be answered without thought.
How do you create wonder questions? Think about the Scripture story or the situation first. Then consider how you
would invite the children into a deeper conversation about the story. Questions need to be formulated to reflect the
age and development of the children. Five-year-olds need to be asked to think about the story in a very concrete
manner, but fifth graders can explore the understanding of a Scripture story in a more abstract way. For 5-year-olds, we
ask questions like what do you think the shepherd did while watching the sheep? For fifth graders, we ask how do you
think the shepherd felt knowing that the sheep depended on him completely?
An aspect of wonder questions that you, as a teacher/leader, need to keep in mind is not to answer for the children.
Allow them the time to think about the question and discover their own answers. There are no right or wrong answers in
wonder questions, just contemplations. If the children appear to be struggling with the question or not understanding
the question, help them by breaking it down into smaller parts. Once the question is understood, provide them the time
to consider it and share their answers.
Children will see the Scripture stories from a very different perspective. Answering the wonder questions will allow
them to encounter God. They will experience the love of God and grow in their faith through the questions and answers.
