WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF PLAY

PlayStation ® VR is a new Virtual Reality (VR) system for PlayStation ® 4 (PS4 ) that opens the door to revolutionary, immersive gameplay experiences and transports you from your living room to amazing worlds.

Using a state-of-the-art HD OLED display, motion sensors, 360-degree head tracking and 3D audio, the VR system puts you “inside” the game world, allowing

you to view and interact with your virtual surroundings as if you are physically in the game.

KEY FEATURES

• Pushing the boundaries of play PlayStation ® VR is designed to give you a unique sense of presence – it makes you feel as if you’re actually inside the game world rather than looking in through a TV screen. It’s a powerfully engaging experience that completely transforms the activity of “playing” games. With PlayStation ® VR, you are the game – you’re not controlling a character – it’s you, at the centre of a living, breathing virtual world.

• Powered by cutting-edge technology PlayStation ® VR is driven by the remarkable processing capability of PS4 – the world’s most powerful console*. It’s a complete integrated VR solution that sits within the existing PS4 ecosystem, making PlayStation ® VR an accessible and convenient way for anyone to enjoy leading-edge VR technology in their own home. The PS4 system and PlayStation ® Camera accurately track the system’s movement and allow the spectacular

OLED screen to run at a high frame rate with super low latency – which means the time it takes for visuals to be generated is almost unnoticeable to the naked human eye.

When you move your head, the image you see moves with you, leading to a smooth, natural and blur-free view

as you look around the game world.

• Lightweight and easy to wear

The headset has undergone extensive development and refinement to make it as light and as comfortable as

possible.

It’s effortless to slip on and off, and the innovative design means that the minimal weight is supported by a

band across the top of your head, eliminating heaviness from the front.

• Infinite potential control options PS4 has the best controller for gaming in the form of the DUALSHOCK ® 4 wireless controller, and it works brilliantly with PlayStation ® VR, giving players a familiar, user-friendly way to enjoy VR content. Alternatively, a motion controller – or even better, one in each hand – brings the ability to make dynamic, controlled physical movements and interact tangibly with the virtual space. This was demonstrated in “PlayStation ® VR Worlds” (London Studio); a game designed to deliver a strong sense of presence and advanced two-handed interaction by placing you in a frantic world of gangsters and gunfights. Other software might not even need a controller at all, relying instead on simple, accurate head movements – an example being the “Headmaster”

(Frame Interactive) which sees you physically head virtual footballs to improve the performance of your club.

• Ultimate surround sound

PlayStation ® VR supports 3D audio technology, adding to the immersion factor by allowing you to hear sounds from above, below and all around you as you play. You can even distinctly hear sounds travelling towards or away from you in the 3D space – as experienced in “The London Heist” where you hear sounds

as you move around the room, pinpointing exactly where your enemies are coming from.

• Sharing the experience with social screen Virtual Reality doesn’t have to be a solo experience – there’s loads of scope for social and competitive interaction. PlayStation ® VR can output to a TV screen, allowing spectators the opportunity to see everything you see through the VR headset, and potentially for secondary players to get involved with a controller or device such as a tablet, depending on the software. THE PLAYROOM VR by SCE WWS is a perfect example of social VR and will be available as a free download from PlayStation ® Store to all PS VR owners, simultaneously with the launch of the system.

PLAYSTATION ® VR OFFERS UNIQUE SECOND-SCREEN TECHNOLOGY

Gaming should be, at its core, a social experience. Whether that is gaming with friends using controllers in front of one screen, or playing against someone on

the other side of the world through online multiplayer, gaming should be a social experience.

PlayStation ® has a heritage for creating social experiences:

• PlayStation ® Plus gives PS4 users the chance to jump into a world where your best friend could be your deadliest rival • The ‘SHARE’ button has allowed PS4 Players to broadcast live gameplay via Twitch and YouTube and share key moments to social media channels • Share Play on PS4 has also allowed Players to invite friends to join them in-game even if they don’t own a copy • PlayStation’s leading developers have a broad range of experience creating social content e.g. Japan Studio, London Studio

Plug and play

One of the initial criticisms put to virtual reality gaming was the concept that it could be very

‘insular’; gaming should be about engaging

experiences and shared enjoyment. How can gaming be enjoyed with others if it is contained to a headset

that only I can see?

Through Mirror Mode and Separate Screen Mode, PlayStation ® VR is built for social experiences.

• MIRROR MODE will allow everyone in the room to see what the person with the headset is experiencing.

• SEPARATE SCREEN MODE will display on a television as an entirely separate rendered experience of the same game, so others can play at the same time without the need for a PlayStation ® VR headset.

The system also has a Cinematic mode, which lets users enjoy a variety of content in a large virtual screen while wearing the headset. Supported content for the Cinematic mode includes standard PS4 games and videos as well as variety of PS4 features including Share Play and Live from PlayStation ® . Users will also be able to enjoy 360 degrees photos and videos that are captured by devices such as omnidirectional cameras on PS VR via PS4 Media Player, which will let them feel as if they are physically inside the captured scene.

LIMITLESS POTENTIAL BEYOND GAMING

PlayStation ® is all about bringing new gaming experiences to players, but it’s worth mentioning that virtual reality technology

carries endless potential beyond gaming. The only limit is a

developer’s imagination – VR makes it possible to step into any

situation, interact with anything and explore any location from the real world to the realm of fantasy.

DRAWING ON A GREAT HISTORY OF INNOVATION

As a company, PlayStation ® has never stood still. Since the very first system, every PlayStation ® generation has brought players fresh, imaginative new ways to interact, connect and experience games. From the introduction of motion gaming with EyeToy ® on PlayStation ® 2, PlayStation ® has earned a reputation for “doing it first”, creating and championing brand new ways to play. PlayStation ® VR is the latest development in this illustrious history of ground-breaking innovation.

• The holy grail of gaming

Since the 1980s, gamers have dreamed of entering and exploring virtual 3D worlds where they could look around

with their own eyes and experience sensations as if they were really there. (Cont.)

In the ’90s and later years, a few early Virtual Reality devices emerged but never quite got off the ground, leaving the tantalising prospect of the “VR headset” restricted largely to the imagination of Hollywood sci-fi movies. The world is now eagerly awaiting the arrival of PlayStation ® VR, previously known by the working title ‘Project Morpheus’. However, did you know that Sony’s journey into the world of VR actually started as far back as 1999…?

gaming technology

• Now it’s time to make the virtual dream a virtual reality The term “Virtual Reality” might have been around for years, but genuine high-quality VR gaming is a brand new horizon, only made possible by recent advances in the quality of digital screens and computer processing power – such as that provided by the PS4 system.

PlayStation ® VR – is one of the pioneering devices bringing the gaming and entertainment industries to the brink of something truly historic.

• A new reality for games

With Virtual Reality technology the possibilities of what you can do in a game really are endless. Software developers from Indies to AAA studios now have the

tools and freedom to create their visions, putting players inside their games and transporting them to other worlds.

In the run up to launch, various demos have been unveiled for PlayStation ® VR, showcasing the types of emotional experiences and hinting at the immersive gameplay possibilities the tech allows.

With many studios currently working on Virtual Reality games and industries beyond gaming investing heavily in the medium, the VR platform is set to thrive.

WHAT IS COLOUR?

In order to fully understand colour, and therefore colour display, we need to understand light. If the visible element of the light spectrum is divided into three –

then the predominant visible colours are red, green and blue (RGB).

Screens use RGB additive colour by using thousands of red, green and blue dots to make up the images – the dots emit light when activated with electricity

11

and the combination of varying intensities of these colour produce all the final colours we see emitted. The dots are so close together and so small that we don’t see them individually – we see the

colours formed by the mixture of these lights. To keep things simple: it starts with nothing – mixes combinations of red, green and blue light together to produce other colours. The vivid display on a

screen is intensified when more of these pixels (or dots) are concentrated closely together.

The importance of these three colours existing together to produce vivid images can’t be

underestimated. Humans and many mammals use trichromacy to absorb spectrums of colours through three types of receptions (cone cells). Trichomatic colour vision combines these responses

and it’s estimated that the average human can distinguish up to seven million different colours.

So what does this all mean when it comes to screen display? Put simply, whilst a screen works using RGB additive colour – there are two variations. Full RGB spectrum means that every pixel (no matter the size and number of pixels in the display) will include red, blue and green. Limited RGB spectrum means that not every pixel (even if there are more pixels numbers overall in the display) will include red, blue and green – there will be some variations. PlayStation ® VR uses Full RGB.

REFRESH RATE OF PLAYSTATION ® VR IS UP TO 120Hz

WHAT DOES ‘REFRESH RATE’ MEAN?

The refresh rate is the number of frames per second that a screen can display. The unit refresh rate is measured in is Hertz (Hz), which essentially

equals 1/per/second.

Simply put: a refresh rate of 120Hz means that the screen can draw 120 images per second Why is refresh rate important? The faster the refresh rate of a display is, the more frames can be displayed each second. The more frames displayed, the lower the latency to the user. Without latency, you will experience increased immersion and reduce the likelihood of nausea.
