Making an impact on business and wider communities

2015
Super Pioneers, Placing people into employment
Our Super Pioneers programme supports social businesses increasing employability skills and
employment opportunities with ambitious plans to grow their business and scale their social
impact.
Super Pioneers is the evolution of three years of Deloittes involvement in social business. In
that time we have invested 3m into 58 of the UKs leading social enterprises.
In an effort to grow our impact and become more targeted Super Pioneers will be selected
around the theme of employability.
The theme was identified using the Social Progress Index (SPI) with employability being one of
the themes with the highest opportunity for social impact and the best alignment to Deloittes
strategy.
We are working with 11 social businesses that are focused on increasing employability skills and
employment opportunities. (http://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/about-deloitteuk/articles/meet-our-pioneers.html)
The Super Pioneers receive a support package worth an estimated 1m over 12 months. The
programme gives Super Pioneers access to a wide range of skills, experience, networks and
opportunities from across Deloitte, delivered by a dedicated Relationship Management team.
The programme is tailored to each organisation through a three-stage approach: Scope, Deliver
and Impact.
We are currently in the fourth year of the Social Innovation Pioneers Programme.
Across the first three years of the programme we have engaged more than 2,000 Deloitte people
in different parts of delivery this includes directly in relationship teams, through workshops and
clinic-based delivery into pro bono projects. In total we have provided more than 15,000 hours of
time and have completed over 50 bespoke pro bono projects for our Pioneers. This has resulted
in an estimated inward investment by Deloitte of over 1m per year.
In Year 3 we worked with 12 Pioneer ogranisations.
In Year 2 we worked with 16 Pioneer organisations that achieved:

an average growth in turnover of 38%

and 80% increased employment within their organisations, equating to 60 full-time roles

and 83% increased employment within their organisations, equating to 80 full-time and

Firm to invest 1m in UK employability related social enterprises through 11

new Deloitte Super Pioneers;

Deloitte, the professional services firm, has announced that it is investing 1 million
of time and expertise to boost UK employability. Through its Deloitte Social
Innovation Pioneers programme, the firm has this year committed to support eleven
Super Pioneers, all of which have ambitious plans to increase job opportunities in
the UK.
The Super Pioneers include:

Modern Muse, a social enterprise which aims to inspire and engage the next
generation of female business leaders and entrepreneurs;

The Employability Trust which helps unemployed people in the North East
develop the skills they need to secure long term employment; and

Future First, which coordinates an alumni programme for state schools to help
boost social mobility.

David Barnes, managing partner for corporate responsibility, said: This year, we
have prioritised employability as part of a targeted approach to working with social
businesses that are tackling this important issue. We recruit 4,500 young people
every year so improving employability and social mobility is a strategic priority for
the firm. We are proud that Deloittes expertise will be used to make a real impact
on this issue.
Deloitte Social Innovation Pioneers has already worked with 58 social businesses
across the UK, providing 3m of support. More than 2,000 of its people have been
engaged in the programme and 15,000 hours of time and expertise have been
received by the social enterprises. On average, the 58 Pioneers increased turnover
by 38% per year and two hundred new jobs have been created to date. The report
estimates the total amount of value added at more than 4.5m over the first three
years of the programme so far.
Ben Allen, CEO and founder of last years Pioneer, Oomph! Wellness, said: The most
significant impact has been the quality and quantity of introductions to senior
management at major corporates in our sector. We have already converted around
300k of business off the back of these introductions with another 200k of
contracts lined up.

In addition, the firm has now exceeded 1m of investment in the social enterprise
sector through its supply chain. The firm already receives services from former
Pioneers includingFrom Babies with Love, House of St Barnabas, Debate
Mate, Connection Crew and Elvis and Kresse. Deloitte has now awarded its UK
stationery contract to WildHearts Office, part of the WildHearts Group. One of this
years Super Pioneers, WildHearts provides employability and entrepreneurship
training in the UK and funds microfinance in the developing world.
Mick Jackson, founder of WildHearts, said: Becoming a Deloitte Social Innovation
Pioneer in 2013 was transformative for WildHearts; our B2B office supplies business
grew exponentially and Micro-Tyco* went from an exciting new idea to an award
winning talent development programme for schools, universities and global brands.
The fact that a brand as prestigious as Deloitte is now a WildHearts Office customer
is deeply significant. It demonstrates that a social business can service large
corporate accounts and the implications for the future are very exciting.

Social Mobility

Its not where youre from, its where youre going

We are supporting social mobility and changing the way we recruit and support our people, to
enhance the service we can provide to our clients and to make an impact that matters to our
clients and to society.

By 16, children receiving free school meals achieve 1.7 grades lower at GCSE.

30 per cent of all A* grades at A level are achieved by children at independent schools, yet
only 7 per cent of the school population attend independent schools.

32% of MPs, 51% of top Medics, 54% of FTSE-100 chief execs, 54% of top journalists and
70% of High Court judges went to an independent school, compared to 7% of the population.

In September 2015 we introduced contextualised academics which allows our recruiters to make
more informed choices about candidates by considering the context in which their academic
achievements have been gained. Contextualisation allows us to recognise these important
qualifications for young people, whilst also ensuring that for example, 3Bs at A Level in a school
where most students achieve 3Ds, is recognised as exceptional performance.
We have also introduced school and university-blind recruitment, ensuring that our recruiters do
not consciously or unconsciously favour those who attended a certain school or university, so
that job offers are made on the basis of present potential, not past personal circumstance.
For school- and college-leavers, we have re-designed and re-launched our BrightStart scheme,
to ensure that our attraction strategy is more closely aligned to our outreach activities. In
September 2016 we will be welcoming 200 students into the firm as they take their first steps in
their careers through this important programme.

In summer 2015, Deloitte ASPIRE was launched, a new experience of work programme
designed to give school-age students an insight into the world of the work, access to
professionals to build their networks, and opportunities to develop their skills for the workplace.
Deloitte ASPIRE involved 141 students, all of whom were eligible for free school meals, or
attended a school with above average free school meal eligibility and were the first in their family
to go to university. In 2016 Deloitte ASPIRE will grow to take on 200 students across more of our
regional offices.
Our twice award-nominated programme, Deloitte Access, delivered in collaboration with Teach
First, is designed to raise aspiration, support achievement and provide opportunities for students
in low-income communities. In September 2015 we launched the Evaluation Report of the
second year of Deloitte Access highlighting the programmes continuing success and growth.
Deloitte has been recognised by the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills as one of 12
Social Mobility Business Compact Champions UK businesses who are playing a leading role
on the issue of social mobility. The firm is also a signatory to the Access Accountancy initiative, a
movement for change across the accountancy profession.
British Olympic Association
As Professional Services Partner of the British Olympic Association, Deloitte will be providing
expertise through the provision of secondees working at the heart of the organisation and
leading the programme planning for Rio 2016. Utilising our experience and knowledge from
previous Games, Deloitte is helping ensure the BOA leaves no stone unturned so the
environment in Rio is the best it can be for the athletes. If the planning is right, it will give Team
GB the best chance possible of making history.
London 2012 was unforgettable but with less than a year to go all eyes are now firmly on Rio
2016. The planning is reaching a critical stage and once again we are in the heart of the action
working with both the British Olympic Association (BOA) and British Paralympic
Association(BPA) as their Professional Services partner, standing shoulder to shoulder as they
get ready for the challenge ahead.
The expectation of a nation following the success of London 2012, demand that ambitions for
achieving excellence across preparation and performance is on a par with that of elite athletes.
No host city nation has ever won more medals at the following Games and UK Sport has
stated that their aspiration is for Team GB and Paralympics GB to do just that. It is going to be
tough! If we get the planning right, then we will give the athletes the best chance possible of
making history.
British Paralympic Association
Our sponsorship of the British Paralympic Association has gone from strength to strength since
2007, supporting disability sport at both grassroots and elite level. The partnership reflects the
passion of our people for sport and high achievement and through fundraising and services we
are helping them on the road to Rio 2016. Deloitte Parasport, our joint initiative, signposts
disabled people to sporting opportunities and now boasts a disability club database of over
2,000 clubs in the UK.

Deloitte Ride Across Britain (more online)

Deloitte Ride Across Britain is our flagship annual corporate challenge. Since the inaugural event
in 2010, the nine day cycle ride, a 969 mile end-to-end journey, sees over 100 Deloitte riders
and clients participate every year. With the challenge raising over 1.5m for the British
Paralympic Association, riders are supporting disability sport from grassroots to the podium.
Charitable Giving
We dont just raise funds; over a three year period we provide our charity partners with time and
expertise through volunteering and pro-bono support, creating sustainable solutions to
community need.
Our aim is to play a proactive role in helping our charity partners deal with key organisational
challenges, supporting them by raising funds but also providing time and expertise through
volunteering and pro-bono support. The focus of our support until 31 May 2016 is on our three
national charity partners, voted for by staff: Alzheimers Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK.
Every office has a Corporate Responsibility Champion who organises local activities alongside
our calendar of centrally managed events and challenges. Additionally, each year the firm
allocates a matched funded amount for staff fundraising activities.
Deloitte Access
Deloitte is working with Teach First to provide a holistic support package to schools, giving pupils
from low income communities a greater understanding of the opportunities available to them
beyond education, whilst equipping them with the skills they need to succeed in the
workplace. Deloitte Access will use the firms people to support over 1,000 students from Teach
First schools as they develop the skills needed to access the best possible opportunities after
their education. (http://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/about-deloitte-uk/articles/deloitteaccess.html)
http://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/pages/about-deloitte/topics/corporate-responsibilitysustainability.html
We continue to contribute extensively to the wider community. The Deloitte Foundation
(http://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/pages/about-deloitte/topics/deloitte-foundation.html) is leading
two community initiatives that support disabled people in sport and have built employability skills
for 20,000 young people. We are also developing socially innovative businesses through a
pioneering scheme.
The Deloitte Academy supports this and offers guidance to Boards and individual directors. It
came about in response to the demands, challenges and increased accountability for those who
manage and govern.
The Deloitte Social Innovation Pioneers programme supports socially innovative businesses,
providing them with a package of support to help them grow to scale and become investment-

ready. In total we are investing over 1m a year in this ground breaking programme which
utilises the skills and capabilities of our people to support social business.
This programme includes access to our business experts, a dedicated team of business
mentors at their disposal, networking opportunities with our clients and master classes on
topics such as leadership and investment readiness.
Those who benefit from social businesses are their employees and direct customers as well as
the wider community and a fair proportion of surpluses are reinvested into the business.
School Mentoring
Secondary School Mentoring is one of the firm's core Community Investment Programmes and
each Deloitte office has its own scheme. Mentors meet their mentees once a month over two
years, providing advice and guidance on all aspects of their school life and future careers. The
scheme aims to help provide role models to young people from disadvantaged communities and
help bridge the gap between the world of work and the world of education.
Deloittes reading partner scheme supports primary and secondary school pupils with their
reading and speaking and listening skills. Our number partner scheme helps primary or
secondary school pupils to improve their mental maths through playing number games supplied
by the school. This scheme also helps to boost their confidence with numbers.
Deloitte & London 2012
Nine years ago we chose to back Londons bid to host the Games. Considering London wasnt
favourite to win, it was a bold move for our firm. But we believed the Games would be a force for
good, that they would create new social, economic and business potential and reinforce the UK's
position as a leading global player and this was the vision we stayed true to as our London
2012 journey unfolded. We dedicated the breadth and depth of our firm to help make the Games
happen - contributing over 750,000 hours of integral expertise to support the Organisers with
some of their most complex challenges. And so as the world set its sights on London, we
watched with delight as all of our hard work backstage paid off in possibly the most successful
and memorable Olympic and Paralympic Games in history.
Deloitte made a bold move by embarking on a major relationship with the Royal Opera House.
This collaboration between Deloitte and the Royal Opera House brings together both
organisations' appetite for innovation, desire to challenge the preconceptions of the audience
and engage with young professionals.
The Deloitte Institute provides a fresh and distinctive way to deepen relationships with our
clients, offering them deeper and tailored insight to accelerate their own growth, and helping to
drive innovation and entrepreneurship to the top of the corporate agenda. (More on:

What is it?

The Deloitte Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship is an exclusive ten-year partnership

with the London Business School.
Whats its goal?
We want the Institute to be an engine for growth in the economy. Through its research, teaching
and outreach activities the Institute promotes greater understanding of innovation and
entrepreneurship worldwide. Moreover, it gives our people and clients the insights and tools
they need to innovate within their own work.
How it works
The Institute combines the London Business Schools research and education capabilities with
our real-time insights into the challenges and opportunities facing British businesses. At its core
are four London Business School faculty members. There are also more than ten other faculty
members from each area of study, all of whom aim to build a vibrant community of scholars.
The focus of our support until 31 May 2016 is on our three national charity partners, voted for by
staff: Alzheimers Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK. Regional charities selected by regional
offices are also supported through the partnership scheme.

Deloittes Charity Challenge raises one million
239 Deloitte staff, including 25 partners, took part in four challenges across four continents in
June and July 2015, raising 1 million for its charity partners, Alzheimers Society, Mind and
Prostate Cancer UK. The challenges included summiting Kilimanjaro, completing a tri-x in
Borneo, climbing Mulhacn in mainland Spain and scaling one of the worlds most active
volcanoes, Cotopaxi in Ecuador.
The 1 million target, reached yesterday, was raised by over 10,543 sponsors and includes over
250,000 matched funding by Deloitte, the largest the firm has ever provided. The Charity
Challenge has been Deloittes biggest fundraising event to date and brings the total raised for its
national charity partners to 2.5 million, exceeding the 2 million target set in 2013.
David Sproul, Deloitte chief executive and senior partner, said: We are thrilled to have reached
our 1 million target for the Charity Challenge and immensely proud of everyone who undertook
extreme personal challenges to support Alzheimers Society, Prostate Cancer UK and Mind. The
funds raised will have a huge impact in helping our charity partners to expand on the excellent
work they are already doing across the UK.
Over 600 people supported the participants with fundraising events held at Deloittes offices in
the UK, including a Deloitte Dances showcase judged by celebrity guest and Mind ambassador,
Frankie Bridge. Seventy members of the Deloitte Knitters network also spent over 1,700 hours
knitting 160 bobble hats for Charity Challenge participants.
Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of Alzheimers Society, Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind,
and Owen Sharp, chief executive of Prostate Cancer UK, all agreed: Hitting the 1 million target
through the Deloitte Charity Challenge is a fantastic result for the partnership so far and weve all
been inspired by the energy and goodwill of Deloittes staff with their amazing fundraising efforts.

We are incredibly proud of everything thats been accomplished, from fundraising to pro bono
support, and its exciting to think what we can achieve with Deloitte next year. Together, we will
get vital support and services to thousands affected by dementia, mental health problems and
prostate cancer.
Deloitte are helping Alzheimers Society to fund eight Doctoral Training Centres across the UK to
support 53 new pHD students and clinical fellows. Prostate Cancer UK is using the funds to run
its awareness raising programmes across the country, engaging with men and women worried
about prostate cancer. The funds will also help Mind answer an additional 24,000 calls though its
Infoline and distribute more than 80,000 information booklets, allowing the charity to support
people in need through their charity shops.
