SECOND COLLECTION
This weekend we take up our monthly collection to support
our children in Catholic Schools. This money helps to cover
the tuition subsidy the Archdiocese requires each parish to
pay for each child registered from our parish. Thank you for
your generosity and investment in our childrens education.

PAULIST MEMORY BOOK

We are compiling a Paulist Memory Book to be available for
the Farewell Weekend. We are looking for photos of
Paulists, stories, memories or reflections on your
experience with one or the Paulists in general. We are
including the parish history written by James Harrison for
the 100th anniversary. Our parish has served immigrant
families from the beginning with the Italian community.
Almost all of our families came to the United States from
another country, some from colonial times and some more
recently. We want to add those stories to our memory book,
so please write your family story and submit to Rose to fill
out our parish profile. Need help, let us know. Need all
photos, memories & immigration stories by June 6.

Pastoral Corner
Pentecost Sunday - The Spirit Brings Hope and Love, which together bring Change . . . .
In the initial Easter stories of the appearances of Jesus, especially in the Upper Room, we see the apostles and disciples
as fear driven men. They are essentially hiding out in the Upper Room, with the doors locked for fear they might be
arrested next by the authorities. Jesus had given them the great task of telling his story, of sharing his message of
God's love and mercy, but they had neither the strength nor the will to even begin. But after Pentecost they were
changed people.
What was it that the Holy Spirit did to them, and how did the miracle of change come about? Even though we are
dealing with mystery, that doesn't mean we can't understand anything about it. To begin with, we must understand
that the apostles and disciples were wounded people, wounded by doubt and grief, by fear and failure, and above all
by a sense of inadequacy.
But after the coming of the Spirit they were changed people. They left their hiding place, and set out courageously to
preach the Gospel. The Holy Spirit brought hope and love to the apostles and disciples. Hope and being loved can
make miracles happen. People change when they are given hope; when someone believes in them, and gives them a
task to do.
Above all, people change when they are loved. They come out of their shells, and hidden energies are released in
them. The miracle of human change is the only real miracle. We mustn't think that the change was affected in an
instant. It had to be a gradual thing, a growth process. And growth can be slow and painful. We do not easily let go of
old habits and attitudes.
All of us have a capacity for goodness. We have hands that can care, eyes that can see, ears that can hear, tongues
that can speak, feet that can walk, and above all hearts that can love. But each of us has some handicaps or faults or
fears which keep us from realizing our true and full selves. We need someone to awaken us to what is inside us.
Someone who will call us to live life fully, and help us grow.
For us followers of Jesus, that someone is the Holy Spirit. The power that changed the apostles is available to us too,
the gentle power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit awakens us to the mysterious power within us, bids us live, and helps
us grow.

Fr. Charlie Brunick, CSP

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD, ISAAC

HECKER, PAULIST FATHERS FOUNDER
They will show that the end and practice of self-denial
and mortification, as well as the exercise of all moral
virtues are preparatory steps toward the increased action
of the Holy Ghost in the soul. For the exercise of the
moral virtues precedes ordinarily the Gifts of the Holy
Ghost. [On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another
person who is ill, and you believe something miraculous has
happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at 202-2692519 and tell him your story.
