Intended use

The CX20x0 device series is a modular control system designed for DIN rail installation. The system is
scalable, so that the required modules can be assembled and installed in the control cabinet or terminal box
as required.

Only switch the PC off after closing the software

Before the Embedded PC is switched off, the software currently running on it should be stopped properly in
order to avoid data loss on the hard disk. Please read the section on Switching off.
Switch off all system components and uncouple the Industrial PC from the system if the PC is not used for
control purposes, e.g. during a function test. To disconnect first pull the first terminal behind the power
supply unit (optional), then pull the connectors of the fieldbus connections.
System components that have been switched off must be secured against being switched on again.
The Embedded PCs power supply unit must be supplied with 24VDC.

Damage to the environment or devices

Attention

Do not exchange any parts when under power! The exchange of controller parts when live
can lead to short-circuits or overvoltages. These can damage the controller itself and connected peripherals (terminals, monitors, input devices, etc.).

When components are being fitted or removed, the supply voltage must be switched off.

Software knowledge
System malfunctions
Mandatory software knowledge! Every user must be familiar with any of the functions of the
software installed on the PC that he can reach.

System Overview

CX2020, CX2030, CX2040 | Basic CPU module

The system
The CX2020 has a 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron CPU, the CX2030 has a 1.5 GHz Intel Core i7 dual-core
CPU, the CX2040 has a 2.1 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core CPU. In the CX2020 and CX2030 the controller
is fanless and has no rotating components. Due to its high power, the CX2040 has a fan with ball bearings
and speed monitoring. In addition to the CPU and chipset the basic modules also contain the main memory.
For the CX2020 and CX2030 the size is 2 GB. Up to 4 GB are possible as an option. The CX2040 has 4 GB
of RAM as standard. The controller boots from the CFast flash memory card. The basic configuration of the
modules includes a CFast memory card, two independent Gbit Ethernet interfaces, four USB 2.0 interfaces
and a DVI-I interface. The CPU has an internal 128 KB NOVRAM, which functions as a persistent data
memory if no UPS is used. Optionally the devices can be ordered with a serial or fieldbus interface. Other
components from the CX2000 family can be connected via the multi-pin terminals on either side. The
operating system is Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 P. Up to four modules can be connected to
the basic CPU module. The connection order is irrelevant. Internally the modules are connected via PCI
Express and can be plugged to the CPU "in the field". The power supply for the CPU module comes from a
CX2100 power supply module, which is connected on the right-hand side of the CPU. Two further CFast
memory card modules (CX2550 0010) can be connected between the power supply unit and the CPU, so
that a total of up to three CFast cards can be used. RAID can be used in situations where more than one
CFast card is used.
The CX2020, CX2030 and CX2040 Embedded PCs extend the CX product family with versions with very
high CPU power (optionally with multi-core) and enable direct connection of Bus Terminals or EtherCAT
Terminals. The CX2000 in conjunction with EtherCAT and TwinCAT enables very fast control processes in
the microsecond range (eXtreme Fast Control Technology). The basic CPU modules have two independent
Gbit Ethernet interfaces, four USB 2.0 interfaces and a DVI-I interface as standard. A serial or a fieldbus

Product overview
interface can optionally be ordered. Please note that these have to be specified with the order, i.e.
retrospective installation is not possible. On the left-hand side the CPU features a multi-pin connector for
connecting further optional modules.

The components
The individual system components are modules with a width of 22 mm or multiples of it that can be
connected in-line with one another. The basic unit consists of the CX20x0 CPU module and a power supply
module (CX2100-0xxx).

Power supply unit with integrated I/O interface and optional UPS
The 24V DC power supply unit is available in three different versions:
CX2100-0004: E-bus/K-Bus power supply unit with automatic switchover
CX2100-0904: E-bus/K-Bus power supply unit with automatic switchover and integrated capacitive
UPS
CX2100-0914: E-bus/K-Bus power supply unit with automatic switchover and integrated electronic
charging unit for external battery packs in order to maintain UPS functionality.
All power supply units feature an illuminated anti-glare LC display with two rows of 16 characters each for
displaying status messages. The application programs can also use the display for displaying applicationspecific texts.

EtherCAT as a fast I/O system

The CX2020, CX2030 and CX2040 Embedded PCs were developed with a view towards optimised
interaction with EtherCAT. EtherCAT offers a wide range of application options. The separate Gigabit
Ethernet interfaces enable EtherCAT to be used with cable redundancy by using one of the Ethernet
interfaces as redundancy port. In addition, devices with EtherCAT slave interface can be operated such that
several intelligent controllers can be synchronised via an EtherCAT network.

PLC, Motion Control, interpolation and visualisation

As IPC on a DIN rail the CX2000 in conjunction with TwinCAT offers the functionality of large Industrial PCs.
Multi-core CPUs in conjunction with TwinCAT 3 enable PLC projects to be distributed to several cores,
resulting in significant performance gains. Moreover, all TwinCAT functionalities are available for Motion
Control applications: in theory, up to 256 axes can be controlled. In addition to simple point-to-point
movements, more complex multi-axis functions such as electronic gearbox, cam plates and flying saw
can be implemented. Due to the high-performance CPUs, the CX2000 can also perform interpolating 3-D
path movements and execute DIN66025 programs. In addition to handling real-time control tasks the
TwinCAT real-time kernel leaves enough time for the user interface (HMI). The high performance of the
graphics kernel integrated in the CPU enables demanding visualisations with advanced user interfaces to be
realised.

Fieldbus interfaces
The fieldbus interfaces are currently available as master and slave versions for the following fieldbuses.

Optional interfaces:
The optional interfaces can be used to connect single-channel fieldbus interfaces. Operation is limited to one
interface at a time. If several fieldbus interfaces are required, they can be added as E-bus terminals
(EL67xx). The following fieldbus interfaces are available:
CX20x0-N010 = DVI-D, DVI-D connector
CX20x0-N030 = RS232, D-Sub connector
CX20x0-N031 = RS422/RS485, D-Sub socket

The software
In combination with the TwinCAT automation software, the CX20x0 Industrial PC becomes a powerful IEC
61131-3 PLC with up to four user tasks. Additionally, Motion Control tasks can also be executed. Depending
on the required cycle time, several servo axes can be controlled. Even special functions such as flying saw,
electronic gearbox and cam plate can be realised.

Architekture overview

All Embedded-PCs of CX20x0 family have the same architecture. This architecture is described in the
following section.

The CX20x0 Embedded-PCs based on the Intel-Sandy-Bridge-Microarchitecture. Intel named the

architecture Sandy-Bridge processors as 2nd Generation Intel Core Processors. The CX20x0-family uses
the following CPUs:
IntelCeleron 827E (Singlecore)
IntelCORETM i7 2610UE (Dualcore)
IntelCORETM i7 2715QE (Quadcore)
The CPU contains the computing unit, the memory controller and the graphic interface. The single core
processor contains the Intel HD Graphics core. The two CoreTM i7 CPUs (Dual- and Quadcore) contain the
Intel HD Graphics 3000 core. This is more powerful than the Intel HD Graphics core in case of the quad
core CPU the clock speed is a bit higher than the dual core CPU. Details of the CPUs can be found in the
documentation from Intel. The embedded PCs are available with 2GB and 4 GB memory. The memory is not
expandable and must be ordered ex works.
All CX20x0-EPCs have the Mobile Intel QM67 Express chipset (Intel BD82QM67 PCH). This chip offers
all necessary interfaces::
4x USB 2.0 (interface)
1x USB 2.0 intern (power supply button / display)
DVI-I und DVI-D interface (2nd interface optional CX20x0-N010)
1PCIe Lane for each Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controller

Product overview
LPC-interface for super I/O controller for serial interface (CX20x0-N03x)
4 PCIe lanes via backplane connector (left)
1 PCIe to FPGA for K-/E-bus and NOV-RAM
2x SATA internal via backplane connector (left)
2x USB internal via backplane connector (left)
The interfaces (USB, DVI, und LAN) ports are standard ports. External devices which support the certain
standards can be operated via these interfaces. A VGA monitor can be operated via an adaptor over the
DVI-I port. A split cable (DVI-D and VGA) allows the use of VGA and DVI-D at the same time. If the option
interface CX20x0-N010 (2nd DVI-D port) is used the 1st DVI-I port can operate either in DVI or VGA mode.
The network controller is an Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
There are two independent ports. Both ports are able to operate at 10 / 100 / 1000Mbits and they are able to
support Jumboframes.
Details are described in the chapters of the system interfaces.

Battery compartment

The battery compartment is located under the front cover of the CX20x0. The opening in which the battery
bracket is mounted can be seen when the front cover is opened. The battery is then pulled carefully out of
the holder with the help of the ejection tab and then removed. Before you can change the battery you should
power off the system. The settings for time and date must be reset after the change. All other BIOS settings
are not affected.

To insert a new battery push it into the battery compartment. Ensure correct polarity. Then close the front
cover. The battery change is then complete.

The battery is a CR2032 type from Panasonic.

CF slot

A CFast Flash slot is located at the front, which enables the storage medium to be replaced. This allows the
storage medium to be exchanged. In the basic module this should only be done in switched-off state,
otherwise the system may crash. The CFast Flash card can be removed from the module for maintenance.
In this way it is also possible to expand the system (only operating system and program memory). CFast
Flash cards (CFast cards) are available as accessories in various sizes.

Product overview
The following images illustrate the handling of the CFast cards. The eject mechanism is based on the pushpush principle: The CFast Flash card is disengaged with a soft click by lightly pressing the card. At the same
time the card moves approx. 4 mm out of the housing, so that it can be pulled out.

On inserting the CFast Flash card it engages again with a soft click. The card is seated correctly if it is flush
with the front side of the device housing.

2.9

CFast card

The CFast Flash Card (CFast Card) is a non-volatile memory.

Data to be retained in the event of a power failure should be saved on the CFast card. The CFast card
operates like a hard disk.

Using CFast cards

Note

We strongly recommend that only CFast cards supplied by Beckhoff Automation GmbH
should be used. These are industrial CF cards with a higher number of write/read cycles
and an extended temperature range (+85 C). Proper operation can only be guaranteed
with CFast cards from Beckhoff Automation GmbH!

Danger of damage to the device!

Attention

During transport in cold conditions, or if the device is subjected to extreme temperature differences, condensation on and inside the device must be avoided. Prior to operation, the
device must be allowed to slowly adjust to room temperature. Should condensation occur,
a delay time of approximately 12 hours must be allowed before the unit is switched on.

Installation
The devices are designed for installation in control cabinets.

Shipping and relocation

Despite the robust design of the unit, the components are sensitive to strong vibrations and impacts. During

Installation on the mounting rail

Snapping onto the mounting rail

The CX20x0 can simply be snapped onto the mounting rail. The bar clips are inserted on the top side and
underside Then simply position the block on the mounting rail and push it slightly until it engages on the
right-hand side. This is indicated by a distinct click. The bars are then engaged again. The engagement of
the individual bars is indicated by a distinct click.

Avoid damage!
Do not force the module or apply excessive pressure!
Attention

Installation position
Comply with the permitted installation position and minimum distances!

Attention

The maximum ambient temperature for CPU modules mounted on a DIN rail is 60C. The
orientation in which the device is fitted must be selected in such a way that cooling air can
flow vertically through the ventilation holes. The images below show the permitted and two
incorrect installation positions. Mounting must provide a clearance of 30 mm both above
and below a CX20x0 device combination to ensure adequate ventilation of the base CPU
module and the power supply unit.

Correct installation position

The high performance and the compact design of the CX20x0 systems may result in increased heat
generation. The heat is dissipated via a passive ventilation system. This system requires the unit to be
mounted correctly. Ventilation openings are located at the top and bottom of the housing. The system
therefore has to be installed horizontally. This ensures optimum air flow.

22

Version: 1.4

Incorrect installation positions

The CX20x0 system must not be operated vertically on the DIN rail. A vertical position would lead to
insufficient CPU ventilation, since the ventilation openings are located on the top and bottom of the housing.
Installation of the system on its side would also lead to inadequate ventilation.

Mounting the module lock

Mounting the lock

The CX20x0 controller system is fully modular, i.e. all system interfaces of the system are field-configurable.
As a rule the latching of the modules to each other is sufficiently strong. However, it is possible for the
controller and its modules to be exposed to vibrations, shocks or impacts. The modules can be securely
connected to one another with the aid of bar clips.

The bar clips are inserted on the top side and underside

Underside

Top side

If all system interfaces are locked, then the entire assembly can be snapped onto the support rail.

Dismounting the lock

In order to dismantle the assembly it must first be removed from the support rail. Afterwards the bar clips can
be removed with the aid of a screwdriver:

Power supply

This power supply unit is equipped with an I/O interface, which permits connection of the Beckhoff Bus
Terminals. The power is supplied via the upper spring-loaded terminals labelled 24V and 0V.
The supply voltage supplies the CX system ant the terminal Bus and Bus Terminal with a voltage of 24 V DC
(-15 %/+20 %). The dielectric strength of the power supply unit is 500 Vrms. Since the Terminal Bus (K- and
E-bus) only transfers data, a separate power supply is required for the Bus Terminals. This is provided by
means of the power contacts, which are not connected to the power supply.

Requirements for the 24V power supply

In order to guarantee the operation of the CPU (CX20x0 module) and the terminal strand in all cases, the
power supply must supply 4 A at 24 V.

The terminals are implemented in spring force technology. Connect the cables as follows:
1. Open a spring-loaded terminal by slightly pushing with a screwdriver or a rod into the square opening
above the terminal.
2. The wire can now be inserted into the round terminal opening without any force.
3. The terminal closes automatically when the pressure is released, holding the wire securely and
permanently.

Compliance of the UL requirements

DANGER

For the compliance of the UL requirements the CX-Controllers should only be supplied by a
24 VDC supply voltage, supplied by an isolating source and protected by means of a fuse
(in accordance with UL248), rated maximum 4 Amp.by a 24 VDC power source, that has to
satisfy NEC class 2. A NEC class 2 power supply shall not be connected in series or parallel with another (class 2) power source! This UL requirements are valid for all supply voltages of the CX-Controllers!

Compliance of the UL requirements

To meet the UL requirements, the CX-Controllers must not be connected to unlimited
power sources!
DANGER

Commissioning / Configuration

Commissioning / Configuration

4.1

EtherCAT cable redundancy

EtherCAT cable redundancy can be realised in the CX20x0 systems through the two independent Ethernet
ports. Minimum requirements:
1. EtherCAT redundancy supplement
2. EK1110 (Bus extension)
3. EK1100 (Bus Coupler)
The supplement product on the Beckhoff website at
http://download.beckhoff.com/download/Software/TwinCAT/TwinCAT2/Supplement/
TwinCAT_EtherCAT_Redundancy/Install/TcEcRedundancy.exe
can be downloaded. The required licence key can be ordered from our sales division. The required couplers
are ordered together with the other hardware. These components can then be used to configure the
controller. The upper figure shows a minimum configuration example for cable redundancy. Once the
hardware has been wired and commissioned, the supplement must be installed on the device, for example
via a USB stick or the IT network. During the installation the system asks for the licence key. The cable
redundancy can be set up in the System Manager. The first step involves reading the terminal configuration.
Then select "Advanced Settings" under the "EtherCAT" tab in the EtherCAT device properties. The second
adapter can be set under the "Redundancy" menu. Use the "Search" button to open the selection menu.
Select "Local Area Connection 2 (Intel(R).....)" for the lower network connection (X001). Click "OK" to
complete the configuration.

39

Commissioning / Configuration

The supplement only supports CABLE REDUNDANCY

Note

This supplement only supports cable redundancy. This means that fail safety exists only for
the cable sections. That means the connections between the couplers. Failures of individual terminals are not covered.Further details can be found in the Beckhoff Information System under EtherCAT cable redundancy.

Cases of failure
The two possible failures are described in the example below.

In this example the supply line for coupler EK1100 is faulty. The EK1100 terminals continue to run despite
the cable failure. The System Manager indicates the failure as follows:

40

Version: 1.4

CX2020, CX2030, CX2040

Commissioning / Configuration

The interruption is indicated by "LNK_MIS B" and "LNK_MIS A".

The next example shows a failure of the "return line":

In this case the second cable is faulty. The terminals at the coupler continue to run without malfunction. The
System Manager indicates the behaviour as follows:

CX2020, CX2030, CX2040

Version: 1.4

41

Commissioning / Configuration

The interruption is indicated by "LNK_MIS C" at coupler EK1100.

The EtherCAT ring is expandable. The number of devices in the ring is controlled by licenses: up to 250, up
to 1000, more than 1000. A master is only able to bridge one failure. In the event of two failures the ring
components will continue to run up to the breaking points.

4.2

Switching on and off

Switching on
The power supply for the basic CPU module comes from the power supply unit. The basic CPU module
starts automatically when the power supply unit is connected to the mains.

Switching on for the first time

When you switch on the PC for the first time, the pre-installed operating system (optional) will be started.

Switching off
The Embedded PC switches off when the power supply unit is switched off. The control software typically
running on Embedded PCs should be shut down or stopped correctly. A user who may not close software
may also not switch the Embedded PC off, since data can be lost from the hard disk by switching off while
software is running.
Once the software has been stopped, the operating system can be shut down. Only then should the power
supply be interrupted.

The number of pulses indicates the position of the last Bus Terminal before the fault. Passive Bus Terminals,
such as a power feed terminal, are not included in the count.
In the case of some errors, rectification does not cause the power supply to leave the blink sequence. The
power supply can only be restarted by switching its supply voltage off and on again.
The CX unit recognizes these terminals automatically on scanning, reads out the terminal types and
automatically places them in the System Manager.

K-bus state
The K-bus status is saved in the state byte (see fig. K-bus interface 1). If the value is 0 the K-bus is
operating synchronously and without errors. If the value is <> 0 there may be a fault, or it may only be an
indication that the K-bus cycle is longer than the task, in which case it would no longer by synchronous with
the task. The task time should be faster than 100 ms. We recommend a task time of less than 50 ms. The Kbus update time typically lies between one and five ms.
Bit 0 = K-Bus error
Bit 1 = terminal configuration has changed since the start
Bit 2 = process image lengths do not match
Bit 8 = no valid inputs (yet)
Bit 9 = K-bus input update not yet complete
Bit 10 = K-bus output update not yet complete
Bit 11 = watchdog
Bit 15 = acyclic K-bus function active (e.g. K-bus reset)
If there is a K-bus error, this can be reset via the IOF_DeviceReset function block (in the TcIoFunctions.lib).

Disassembly and disposal

The disassembly of a CX20x0 hardware configuration with system interfaces takes

place in 3 steps
1. Switching off and disconnecting the power supply
Before a CX20x0 system can be dismantled, the system should be switched off, and the power supply
should be disconnected.

2. Removing from the DIN rail

Before the individual modules are disconnected, the whole CX20x0 hardware block should be removed from
the DIN rail. Proceed as follows:

2.1. Release and remove the first Terminal next to the power supply unit on the DIN
rail.
First remove any wiring from power supply unit and then from the first terminal on the DIN rail next to the
power supply unit. If the wiring is to be reused for another system, it is advisable to make a note of the
connections. Then pull the orange terminal release (see arrow) to release the terminal and pull it out.

2.2. Releasing the CX20x0 systems

In order to release the CX20x0 block, the DIN rail fastening above and below the device must be released.
To do this, press the hooks outwards using a screwdriver. An audible click indicates that the device is
released.
