School

: SMP

Subject

: Mathematics

Class/ Semester

: VIII/ II

Time Allocation

: 2 x 45 minutes

A. Standard Competence
Understading the characteristics of cubes, rectangular prisms, prisms,
pyramids, and their parts, also determine their measure
B. Basic Competence
Calculate the surface area and the volume of cubes, rectangular prisms, and
pyramids
C. Indicator
Students can determine the surface area of prisms
D. Learning Achievement
Students can determine the surface area of prisms manually and by Cabri 3D
E. Main Material
- The surface area of a polyhedron is the sum of the areas of its faces
- The lateral area of a polyhedron is the sum of the areas of its lateral faces
- The formula to find the surface area of cube is
A=6 s 2
With A is area and s is sides
-

The formula to find the surface area of rectangular prism is

A=2(l. w+ w . h+l .h)

With A is area, l is length, w is weight, and h is height

The formula to find the surface area of triangular prism is
A= (2. area of a base ) +(areas of lateral sides)

The surface area of a right prism is

A = (2. Area of a base) + (the perimeter of a base.the height)

F. Learning Methods
Inquiry method
G. Teaching and Learning Activities
1. Introduction
- Teacher opens the learning process
Apperception:
Students will give a problem to collect some object that have same
classification
2. Main activities
- Teacher give problems in worksheet
- Students read the rule to finish the task in worksheets
- Students use their Cabri 3D to find the answer of the task
- Students manipulate the objects
- By those, students finish the questions in students worksheets
- Students make a conclusion base on their investigating
- Teacher and students make a conclusion together
- Finally, to check student understanding, teacher give some problem
related with their investigating
3. Closing
Teacher reviews, and guides the students to make summary
a. The students give argument to draw conclusion and then discuss it
together to make a right conclusion.
b. Teacher reminds the student to read the material that will be studied
next meeting.

J. Evaluation
1. * Short Response A company makes two types of recycling bins.
One type is a right rectangular prism with length 14 inches, width
12 inches, and height 36 inches. The other type is a regular
pentagon prism with length 14 inches. Both types of bins are
missing a base, so the bins have one open end. Which recycle bin
requires more material to make? Explain.
2. Multi-Step Problem Consider a cube that is built using 27 unit
cubes as shown at the right.
a. Find the surface area of the solid formed
when the red unit cubes are removed from the
solid shown.
b. Find the surface area area of the solid formed
when the blue unit cubes are removed from
the solid shown.
c. Why are your answers different in parts (a)
and (b)? Explain.
(Hint: there are just three red small cubes and three blue small
cubes those fill that big cube, like the figure beside)
