Qigong transliterates to skill with energy. Medical Qigong has

been defined "the skill of body-mind exercise that integrates body,
breath, and mind adjustments into one" and emphasizes that
qigong is based on "adjustment" (tiao

, also translated as

regulation, tuning, or alignment) of body, breath, and mind

(Liu, Chinese Medical Qigong). It is being researched world-wide
as a practitioner-provided treatment and meditative-exercise
therapy that oers help in a broad array of disorders from anxiety
and high blood pressure to pain and cancer care. A kind of Taoist
yoga, qigong is linked to traditional Chinese medical, spiritual and
martial arts traditions.
Yiquan Qigong
I am fortunate to have become involved in the North American
dissemination of a modern internal martial art and qigong system.
Wang Xian Zhai was restricted from teaching his martial art during
the Cultural Revolution in China. He focused his eorts on
hospital care using the qigong-dimension 0f his art, compiling a
significant amount of research data. The distinctive feature of his
method is the emphasis on the little-known tradition of standing

The 3 Keys to Postural Balance

To take this posture itself is the purpose of our practice. - Zen Master
Shunryu Suzuki

The success or failure of any endeavor is influenced by our posture

or attitude (in every sense of that word) and how we hold ourselves
as we initiate, continue and finish our tasks. You will learn a simple
maneuver to address three keys that cover the entire body
5-Element Theory and the Triple Burner
"In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was
accomplished by moving energy. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Nobel Laureate in
Medicine

5-Element Theory in Traditional

Chinese Medicine

We will use the meditation postures to enliven or relax the niduspoints of each organ pair that act as fulcra between our organs and
muscles. 5 in number, the 5-Element theory in medicine represent
the relationship between the organs as part of the Taoist
understanding of human function. By meditating upon the site of
each of the organ pairings nidus we begin to make the adjustments
alluded to in the definition of medical qigong.
Adjusting Your Spine, Ribs and Pelvis
The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients
in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of
disease. Thomas Edison

If we control our acupuncture meridians and postural muscles we

can adjust our own bones to a large degree. Once the principles of

armamentarium. What great skills to have!
Standing can be compared to the work of
Zen: first, you start with the precepts, then you
cultivate wisdom, then you verify with the
mind, and finally you achieve enlightenment
in the void. Only when we have completed
the work of understanding emptiness and the
exploration of polarities, can we practice the
Tao. So in this respect, the work of Zen and
the martial arts are the same.
Wang Xiangzhai, founder of the Yiquan
system of qigong and martial art

"The practice of the Tao is closely

linked with the martial arts and
medicine. Meditation is the
inner,martial arts is outer, and
medicine assists both."
Sun Zi Kun
