be necessary when reassembling an 870 if the detent was removed before

HOW TO USE
Before reswaging the lip, MAKE SURE THE SHOTGUN IS UNLOADED.
Depress the action bar lock and pull the forend halfway to the rear. Unscrew
the magazine cap and lift off the barrel. Position the barrel vertically and
secure it in a padded vise so you have free access to the muzzle side of the
barrel guide ring.
If reswaging is all that is required, position the detent staking punch over
the magazine cap detent so the relief cut on the punch matches the opening
in the guide ring for the magazine tube. Strike the detent staking punch
lightly with a small machinists hammer such as a 4 oz. ballpeen. A great
deal of force ISNOTnecessary. The detent staking punch will automatically
depress the detent as it swages the metal of the barrel guide ring. Carefully
remove any metal that may have been forced out into the barrel guide ring
opening during rewaging since it may prevent proper installation of the
barrel over the magazine tube.
If you must remove the magazine cap detent for any reason, a small center
punch can often be used to force back the lip that secures it. When doing
this, be very careful that you do not lose the detent since it is spring-loaded.
After the barrel work is completed you can reinstall the detent and spring
and restake with the Brownells 870 Detent Staking Punch.
ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN USING A HARDENED PUNCH.
