Strategies for teaching culturally diverse students

Q1: State a few strategies for teaching culturally diverse students.

There are certain strategies which enable teachers to build a stronger teaching learning
relationship with their culturally diverse students. Many of these behaviors and strategies
exemplify standard practices of good teaching and working with students from diverse
cultures. First, consider students' cultures and language skills when developing learning
objectives and instructional activities. Be aware of cultural differences as a source of
problems in learning to read. Accents and dialects seriously affect a childs ability to read
and write, especially in the early stages of these processes. Students should not be
interrupted during the oral reading process; corrections are best done after the reading is
over. Apart from that, a teacher can always provide opportunities for students to share their
experiences by encouraging them to speak from their own experiences and share
information about their familys ethnic background to increase cultural awareness. Besides, it
is crucial for teachers to show interest in every student. This may increase motivation for
students to perform well academically, while also allowing the students to realize that they
are individuals with different cultures. Understanding the lives of your students outside class
helps to also apply academic material to various cultural events and lifestyles. In general, In
general, be sure that your own behavior does not exhibit bias or favoritism in any way. Give
all students the same amount of respect and encouragement.

Q2: How can this help you in classroom?

Students learn more when they are challenged by teachers who have high expectations for
them, encourage them to identify problems, involve them in collaborative activities
regardless of their race, gender, socio background, etc. Students who learn to work and play
collaboratively with classmates from various cultures are better prepared for the world they
face nowand the world they will face in the future. Teachers promote critical thinking when
they make the rules of the classroom culture explicit and enable students to compare and
contrast them with other cultures. Students can develop cross-cultural skills in culturally and
linguistically diverse classrooms. Given the opportunity, students can participate in learning
communities within their schools and neighborhoods and be ready to assume constructive
roles as workers, family members, and citizens in a global society. Furthermore, effective
teachers of culturally diverse students acknowledge both individual and cultural differences
enthusiastically and identify these differences in a positive manner. This positive
identification creates a basis for the development of effective communication and

instructional strategies. Social skills such as respect and cross-cultural understanding can be
modeled, taught, prompted, and reinforced by the teacher. Developing an understanding of
students' lives also enables the teacher to increase the relevance of lessons and make
examples more meaningful.
