NORWAYNodavirushasbeendetectedforthefirsttimeincodin
Norway.NewresearchresultsatFiskeriforskningcanprovetobe
importantinthefightagainstthevirus.

Earlierthisweek,theNationalVeterinaryInstituteandthe
NorwegianFoodSafetyAuthorityreportedthatthenodavirus,which
haspreviouslyaffectedbothhalibutandturbotfryinNorway,has
beendetectedforthefirsttimeinNorwegianfarmedcod.
Theviruscancausethediseaseviralnervousnecrosis(VNN)inthe
fishthatbecomesinfected.Theresultcanbereducedappetiteand
highmortality.

Frymostvulnerable
TogetherwithEngineerSaskiaMennenandothers,SeniorScientistAnn
IngerSommerhasspentseveralyearsstudyinginfectionbynodavirusin
halibut,spottedwolffishandcod.Sommersaysthatinthecod,asintheother
fishspecies,thefryaremostvulnerabletothediseaseafterinfectionthrough
thewater.
Testshaveshownthatthesmallestcodfrybecamesickafterinfectionwitha
nodavirusfromNorwegianfarmedcod.Duringthetwomonthtestperiod,56
%ofthecodfrydiedthatweighed0.5gwheninfectedviathewater.
Conversely,thelargerfrythatweighed5gdidnotdieofinfectionviathe
water.Inthisgroup,35%diedofVNNwhentheywereinfectedthrough
injectionofthevirusintothefish.

apronouncedincreaseinmortalityinthefishthatareinfectedwiththevirus.
Fryweighing5gthatwereinfectedbyinjectionofthevirussuffered60%
mortalityinwaterthatwaskeptataround15degreesCelsius.Incoolerwater,
themortalityratewasmuchlower.
"Thetestsshowthattheinfectedcodisfarmorelikelytodieofthenodavirus
ifthewatertemperaturerises",saysSommer.
