Industry Wide BIM Survey

Introduction to the BIM Survey

This survey is conducted under the purview of the Building Industry Presidents Council BIPC.

The survey aims to collect data, opinions and expections on Building Information Modelli
from industry players. It is hoped that the data collected can be used to formulate an indus
wide national BIM Masterplan and 'Road Map'. The survey is organised into three sections
follows:
A

Company
orofRespondent's
The purpose
this section is Information
to collect data and information on the company respondi
to this survey. The data collected in this section when collated against data in oth
section will be able to 'map' sectors of the industry against IT 'preparedness' (section
and BIM 'awareness' (section C).

Degree of Computerisation / IT Deployment

The purpose of this section is to collect data and information on the degree of
application (hardware and software application). Analysis of data on a macro basis w
provide information on the level of IT application in the industry and by extension, t
level of industry 'preparedness' for the implementation of Building Information Modelli
and identify 'gaps' in industry 'readiness'.
C

BIM Awareness and Preparedness

This section assess the level of 'preparedness' and 'awareness' of Building Informati
Modelling (BIM).

Introduction to the BIM Survey

The survey form is designed in a spread sheet format to facilitate data collation and analys

Introduction to the BIM Survey

In some data cells, selection of certain data will change other data cells making it n
applicable for data-entry; examples are as follows:
Data cells coloured green are locked and
are automatically updated from data
entered in section A (company info).

The values in C1.11 will cause these group

of data cells to "blank-out", making it not
applicable for data entry. All 'bluish-grey'
cells are considered blank-out not
applicable for data-entry.

In some cells the selection of

certain data value will "blank
-out" the cells below. All 'bluishgrey' cells are considered blankout not applicable for dataentry.

A different selection of data-value will change the status of other related data entry cells.

Data cells coloured green are locked and

are automatically updated from data
entered in section A (company info).
Selection of "Vendor" (or "Manufact-urer"
or "Contractor") in section A now unlock
the group of cells in C1.6 for data entry.
The cells in C1.6 are now light yellow.

The selection of different data

value in C1.41 will now unlock
the cell below for data entry.

Improved project design/modelling.

This include a better understanding of design through visualisation, clash
analysis, energy modelling, construction scheduling analysis etc. during the
project life cycle (concept, design, construction, operation).

Improved productivity
This generally means faster turnover time for production of drawings during
the project life cycle and/or project construction period.

Improved cost efficiency/increased profitability

This generally means higher profitability after taking into account increase
cost, lower cost for 'abortive' works, better cost control etc.

Improved project scheduling

Improved project scheduling refers in the project life cycle pertains to critical
path analysis (CPA) of project, identifying manpower needs, coordination
needs, deliverables and time line etc.

BIM proficiency confers advantage in project bidding

Some clients, iconic projects or international/prestigious development are
increasingly specifying BIM proficiency or compliance as a pre-requisite for
project bidding.

General BIM Understanding and Perspective

Indicate your level of "Agreement" or "Disagreement" to the following

statements regarding BIM in industry:
C 3.1

I have been hearing about BIM within the last 1 year

C 3.2

BIM is all about using software

C 3.3

BIM is only about 3D CAD drawings

C 3.4

BIM is about real time collaboration amongst key players

C 3.5

The industry is not clear what BIM is about

C 3.6

BIM do not promote creativity in design

C 3.7

BIM is the future for the construction industry

C 3.8

Most BIM seminars or courses have not been helpful

C 3.9

The government should make BIM compulsory (at
