Seattle Public Schools Earthquake Safety/Seismic Information/Data

Eighteen Buildings are on the Building Excellence IV (BEX IV) Capital Levy major projects list, as
approved by Seattle voters in February, 2013 and are being completed over the next 4 years. On
the list are new replacement buildings, as well as renovated, modernized and repurposed
buildings and all will receive earthquake safety/seismic improvements: Arbor Heights, Bagley,
Cedar Park, Fairmount Park, Genesee Hill, Jane Addams, Lincoln, Loyal Heights, Horace Mann,
Meany, Olympic Hills, Pinehurst, Queen Anne, Thornton Creek, T.T. Minor, and on the WilsonPacific site, Robert Eagle Staff Middle School and Cascadia Elementary and Wing Luke.

Thirty eight buildings have received or are receiving earthquake safety improvements as projects
included on the Buildings, Technology and Academics/Athletics III (BTA III) and BEX IV capital
levies, including John Adams, Aki Kurose, Alki, Beacon Hill, Catharine Blaine, BroadviewThomson, Dearborn Park, Decatur (presently housing Thornton Creek K-8) Eckstein, Franklin,

McClure, McDonald, McGilvra, Mercer, Montlake, Muir, North Beach, Northgate, Rogers, Roxhill,
Sacajawea, Sand Point, View Ridge, Washington, Wedgwood, Whitman, Whitworth(Orca).

Five buildings will receive earthquake safety improvements as BTA IV Capital Levy Projects,
including Bagley, E.C. Hughes, Lincoln, Magnolia and Webster, during the period of 2016-20.

Two buildings will receive earthquake safety improvements as BTA III Capital Levy projects,
including B.F. Day and Salmon Bay @ Monroe.

Three buildings have received earthquake safety improvements with a grant from the Office of the
Superintendent of Public Instruction (Distressed School Grant Award): they are John Marshall,
Louisa Boren and (old) Van Asselt.

Six buildings included in the BEX III capital levy had seismic upgrades during the years 20072012: they are Hamilton, Denny, Chief Sealth, Nathan Hale, Rainier Beach and South Shore.

Twelve buildings benefitted from seismic upgrades as part of the BEX II Capital Levy from 20012007, including Beacon Hill, Brighton(now Martin Luther King, Jr.), Center School, Cleveland,
Dearborn Park, Garfield, Graham Hill, Madison, Maple, Roosevelt, South Lake and Wing Luke.

Nineteen buildings received seismic upgrades as part of the BEX I Capital Levy from 1995-2001,

Rainier Beach, Sanislo, Seward (TOPS) Stevens, West Seattle High School and Whittier.

Note: In most cases, there are buildings getting new roofs and given earthquake safety
improvements at the same time, as needed. New buildings automatically receive earthquake
improvements.

In the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake (magnitude 6.8), 73 Seattle Public School buildings received
some damage: FEMA awarded $1.3 million to Seattle Public Schools to make repairs. It is
important to note that none of those 73 schools were closed by the City of Seattle due to
earthquake damage and all work was completed while classes continued in the buildings.
