Scene 1
Thunder and lightning makes a theatrical effect that reflects the mood
and reflects the war, that something evil is going to happen
It rhymes-casting of witchs spell
Difference battles- between desire and ambition, greed, sense of
values, may battles. In the case of Macbeth he loses more than he
wins although he wins
It is paradoxical- it means what seems to be true would be
WINNING AND LOSING will become a major theme in the play
Satanic creatures, they are evil says the two lines together. They
continue the couplet. When they say it together, they know something
is wrong.
Hover- shows they are supernatural
Fog and filthy- shows that something is wrong
Scene 2 (fair is foul and foul is fair)
Links between witches and Macbeth, since they are evil
Macbeth has won, he is brave, great warrior/soldier for his king.
Contradicts the first scene- Macbeth on the battlefield- real noble and
valiant warrior on the king, is he this great man
Tragic view on humanity, Macbeth has elements of good and bad. Both
evil and good as seen with his connection to the witches and also the
kings noble warrior.
First is the link with evil. He will turn out to be a tragic hero. Man with
the capacity for greatness but falls due to his flaw. Has more of an
effect on the audience because he does horrible things. The idea of
waste, he had so much going for him, why did he have to do that
e.g. like winning the trophy but dishonestly e.g. lance Armstrong,
Maria Sharapova
TRAGIC HERO-high up, many amiable qualities, human failings and
flaws, which will haste their downfall.
Battle between Scotland and Norway
Duncan
Malcolm- Duncans son. Probably going to be the next king. Malcolm
does not get on his high horse, something respectable about Malcolms
nature. E.g. hail, brave friend
Violent play-introduces violence shown by Macbeth. Macbeth is going
to keep on carrying out violent acts throughout the play
Does not shy away from killing.
He is simply serving his king as he should. Seen as loyalty.

To a king-regicide. God on earth.

Duncan is full of pride because his loyal servant has fought for him
bravely and won a battle that seemed lost
Ross and angus are noblemen
Most disloyal traitor The Thane of Cawdor Duncan trusted,
thought he was a good guy and trusted him but he was utterly wrong.
Duncan- trusts people and he can be DECEIVED. Great and good king,
but too trusting but also too nave. But you can be conned, and if you
con the king, everybody loses. So not too trusting.
Duncan is going to give Macbeth the title that was just revealed as the
deepest traitor in the kingdom. Too trusting. Someone can take
advantage of that, and he did. The man is sentenced to death
immediately, and Macbeth is giving the title.
what he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won
so therefore, Macbeth will choose by the voice. Choose which side. And
he will be tempted.
Nature of kingship- the idea that a king needs to be honourable proper,
respectable and proper but also A GOOD JUDGE OF CHARACTER to
know which ones to trust. He must NOT be nave and gullible.
Scene 3
3 witches, they never say how, just that it will happen
