County
Improvement
Authority
(CCIA), the Cumberland
County Freeholder Board, and the Maurice River Historical
Society have announced that a restoration project being
undertaken on the historic East Point Lighthouse in Maurice
River Township, Cumberland County is underway.
In August 2015, the County, the CCIA, and the Maurice
River Historical Society entered into a multi-party agreement to repair the lighthouse. The County is serving as the
financial manager, the CCIA as the project and construction
manager, and the historical society as Site Manager.
Nancy Patterson Tidy, president of the Maurice River
Historical Society, noted: Navigating the grant process, and
building and historic regulations, had proven to be too difficult for the all-volunteer organization so the society reached
out to CCIA for help.
In the fall of 2015, a public hearing was held, and bidders were prequalified. The County received approval for
the funds for the project on December 23, 2015. The
$852,000 project is financed by funding from the Federal
Highway Administration through the New Jersey
Department of Transportation and from the New Jersey
Historic Trust.
According to CCIA Executive Director Gerard Velazquez,
because the work is of an historic nature, bidders were
required to demonstrate their experience both with renovation work on historic structures and to have experience
working with the New Jersey State Historic Trust.
Construction bids opened on March 29, 2016. On April 26,
the Cumberland County Freeholders approved a resolution
to accept the low bid of Aliano Brothers General Contractors

Temperance and womens suffrage were two

movements with which the Grange allied itself.

he agricultural organization
known as the Grange played a
curious role in the relationship
between Charles K. Landis and
Uri Carruth, editor of two local publications, The Vineland Independent and The
Grange, during the 1870s. A proponent of
the farming group, Carruth not only published the local version of its newspaper
but was also accepted as one of its
brethren. Yet it was Landis who had fulfilled many of the principles promoted by
the Grange through his work in Vinelands
early years, something the editor inexplicably chose to viciously attack in his
weekly criticism of Landis.
Temperance and womens suffrage
were two movements with which the
Grange allied itself and Landis and
Vineland promoted both. Yet, in Carruths
vitriolic articles, Vinelands temperance
laws were an example of Landis antiquated thinking and another reason his socalled rule of the town should come to
an end. Yet Vinelands accomplishments
and its founder were being sufficiently
acknowledged by others even as Carruth
cast his aspersions.
Ezra Slocum Carr had witnessed the
progress of Vineland in the early 1870s
and devoted a brief section of his book
The Patrons of Husbandry on the Pacific
Coastto it. His evaluation of the town
reported that In twelve years there was a
population of eleven thousand, mostly
from New England. Fourteen thousand,
and within the last year, twenty-three
thousand acres have been added to the
original tractIt has built one hundred
and seventy-eight miles of excellent roads,
twenty school-houses, ten churches, four
post-offices, fifteen manufacturing establishments, besides shops and stores, such
as would be required by a similar population elsewhere. In the importance of its
agricultural productions Landis Township
ranks the fourth in New Jersey. There are
seventeen miles of railways on the tract,
and six stations.
By the time the Grange began its
demise after 1875, Carruth was dead, having been shot by Landis who had reached
a breaking point with the editors weekly
diatribes. The groups rapid growth had
given way to weak management and poor
organization, according to online sources,

but the Grange would be revitalized by

the turn of the 20th century and, in the
decade after Landis death in 1900, its
founding principles would be reflected in
Vineland.
In an address given in 1912, W.C.
Parsons reported, It is with pleasure that
I am permitted to meet with this, the
Fortieth Annual Session of the New Jersey
State Grange and to make the report for
Vineland Grange, No. 11. Our present
membership is 230, 143 brothers and 87
sisters. We meet Saturday afternoon at
2.30 o'clock [sic] in New Grange Hall. We
have held meetings every Saturday afternoon the past year and for the past two
months have been meeting in our new
quarters, a hall secured by lease for five
years.
Parsons described some of the activities of the local Grange: Childrens Day
was observed by a picnic and entertainment at the home of one of our members
and Memorial Day was observed with
appropriate services in our Hall. Ceres
and Flora have each given us an afternoons entertainment and our Worthy
Lecturer always has something for us.
Farmers Institute was held in our new
hall on November 20th and 21st and the
afternoon and evening sessions were well
attended. Vineland Grange was well represented at the Cumberland County
Farmers Exhibit in Millville the fore part
of September, and carried off quite a number of prizes from both places, for fruit,
vegetables, fancy work, etc., exhibited.
Parsons concluded his report by noting
the success the group had been experiencing and acknowledging the reason for it:
Interest in Vineland Grange seems to be
increasing and I believe a part of the credit for that is due to our purchasing committee for since moving into our new hall
they have fitted up a small room and put
in a stock of groceries and are open every
Saturday afternoon for the sale of goods to
any of our members who may wish to
buy.
His statements tend to make one wonder what it would have been like if
Carruth had embraced the communal
spirit the group engendered and abandoned the vindictive sneer that accompanied his outlook of Landis and the towns
early accomplishments. I

Seniors: Just Say No, Dont
Enable Manipulators
Yet another cry came in from a senior
citizen who is being monopolized by a family member whos been sponging off her for
years! This is a situation that has come to
light too many times. Sometimes, folks, you
just need to use common sense. No one can
help you if you refuse to help yourself!
According to AARP Consumer Report,
financial ruin runs rampant among senior
citizens who become victims of manipulation at the hand of others, be it another

household member, adult child, partner, or

grandchild, millions of dollars are swindled
every day! It is a travesty, and generally
caused by a feeling of emotional responsibility. However, many times, it is a fear of
disappointing someone, or worse yet, fear
of retribution. If the perpetrator of this
behavior is one who will lie, steal, threaten,
tantrum, and cause physical or emotional
distress to you, it is time to reach out for
help (i.e., a restraining order, change your
locks, change your bank account number,
and alert your bank of any suspicions you
may have). Never give your Social Security
number or Pin numbers out, keep credit
cards to a limit, and check transactions regularly. NEVER co-sign for anyone!
We all love our kids, but you are not
doing right by them by enabling them to
continue their unacceptable, and criminal
behavior. Manipulation is the key here, as
they prey on Grandma, or Pop Pop because
they know they can. They prey on those
they know will never say no.
There are three types of profiles that fit
an enabler:
1. Pushover Partner: You allow others
to stick you with all of the household
expenses, despite the fact that they run up
the bills, generally they dont or wont
work, they are addicts, or they simply feel
entitled to free accommodations.
2. Freeloader Favorite: You are a
bleeding heart! You are swayed by his or
her continuous hard-luck stories, they
know they will gain your sympathy, (end
result being, you open your wallet).
3. Human ATM: You continually lend
out money to people who never have any
intention of repaying you.
It has been my experience in dealing
with the victims of these situations that
they have become embroiled in circumstances that have escalated way out of control. They are either harboring fear of being
embarrassed, retaliated against, or losing
the relationship with this person. (This is a
toxic relationship.) No one should tolerate being pressured to empty their life savings in order to accommodate the selfishness of another; but, be it so noted, if you
let your emotions rule, you will forever be a
self-imposed victim!
Learn to say no! Despite their ongoing
woe, such leeches have learned to make
an occupation out of manipulating. They
will not starve! These characters have
learned the system and have no intention
of doing without. Once you are out of the
picture, they will move on to some other
unsuspecting soul.
If you feel that you are a victim of such
abuse, or you suspect a friend or loved one
is a victim, you have the option of contacting the APS (Adult Protective Services) of
Cumberland County. (856-825-0255, ext.
208) Pursue a solution, do not live with a
life sentence.

Over the counter medications may

seem safer because they dont require a
prescription. But we have to be aware that
they can still interact negatively with alcohol. Mixing alcohol with certain medications can cause nausea and vomiting,
headaches, drowsiness, fainting, or loss of
coordination. It also can put you at risk for
more severe problems, such as internal
bleeding, heart problems, and difficulty
breathing. In addition to these dangers,
alcohol can also make a medication less
effective. Even in small amounts, alcohol
also may increase the side effects causing
sleepiness, drowsiness, and light-headedness. All of these side effects may interfere
with your concentration and ability to
operate machinery or drive a vehicle,
which can lead to serious or even fatal
accidents. Because alcohol can adversely
interact with commonly used medications,
its important to read all warning labels
and ask your doctor or pharmacist if it's
safe to use alcohol with any medications
that you take. Many popular pain medications, and cough, cold, and allergy medications contain more than one ingredient
that can adversely interact with alcohol.
The following are common over the
counter medication and the effects that
could happen if mixed with alcohol:
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) fever
reducer/pain reliever: Large doses or
long-term usage can cause liver damage.
Alcoholic beverages increase the chance of
liver toxicity from acetaminophen, or will
worsen the liver damage that acetaminophen can cause.
Ibuprofen (Advil) non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID): Ibuprofen
can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers
and stomach perforations in people who
take chronic ibuprofen treatment.
Ibuprofen can cause severe toxic effects to
the kidneys.
Aspirin (Bayer, Bufferin): Aspirin can
cause severe stomach upset. People with
liver damage should avoid taking aspirin.
Alcoholic beverages can aggravate the
stomach irritation caused by aspirin. The
risk of aspirin-related ulcers is increased
by alcohol.
Antihistamines available both by
prescription and OTC, are used in the
management of allergies and colds.
Antihistamines may cause drowsiness,
sedation, and low blood pressure. Alcohol
can enhance the sedating effects of these
agents and may increase a persons risk of
falling.
We also need to be aware that some
medications already contain a certain percentage of alcohol so mixing these with
alcohol or other medications can be just as
dangerous or have even more severe effects
on your body. Cough syrup and laxatives
may have some of the highest alcohol concentrations. Mixing these with alcohol can
increase side effects such as dizziness,
drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating.

Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should
avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being
treated with cough medicine.
Remember, mixing alcohol and medication puts you at risk for dangerous side
effects. If you are not sure if a medication
can be combined with alcohol, avoid any
alcohol consumption until your doctor or
pharmacist has told you that it is safe to
mix the two. And to learn more about a
medicine and whether it will interact with
alcohol, talk to your pharmacist or other
health care provider.

Coalitions & Communications,
The Southwest Council, Inc.

THE

Memorial Day 2016

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
John McCrae, 1915

McCrae was a Canadian who enlisted

to help the allies in the war. He was
made Medical Officer upon landing in
Europe. During a lull in the battle with
the nub of a pencil he scratched on a
page from his dispatch book. The poem
found its way into the pages of Punch
magazine. By 1918 the poem was well
known throughout the allied world.
Moina Michael, an American woman,
wrote these lines in reply.
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies
She then adopted the custom of wearing a red poppy in memory of the sacrifices of war and also as a symbol of keeping the faith.
A French woman, Madam Guerin,
visiting the United States, learned of the
custom and took it one step further.
When she returned to France she decided to hand make the red poppies and sell
them to raise money for the benefit of
the orphaned and destitute women and
children in war-torn areas of France.
This tradition spread to Canada, the
United States and Australia and is still
followed today.

Tourism at the
Delaware Bayshore:
Its Time Has Come
New Jersey, most populous state in
the nationNew Jersey, too much
traffic, too much suburban sprawl, too
much too much. But in our oftenoverlooked southern ribbon of state,
the natural wonderland called the
Delaware Bayshore boasts a quarter
million acres of protected land,
diverse habitats that support all sorts
of interesting birds and wildlife, and
plenty of amenities for visitors. And
you dont have to take a plane to get
there.
Many people dont know about
this local natural treasure. But
groups such as the Bayshore Center
at Bivalve and the ad hoc Delaware
Bayshore Tourism and Economic
Development Committee in
Cumberland County are hoping to
change that, by promoting cultural
heritage and responsible naturebased tourism as a way to bring
much-needed capital to the region.
Tourism is important for New
Jerseys economy: The industry
reached $43.4 billion in 2015. Yet,
little is known about visitors to the
Cumberland County Delaware
Bayshore.
The Nature Conservancy, which
has been active in protecting
Delaware Bayshore habitat for
decades, has stepped in to help collect data regarding perceptions, attitudes and trends from visitors to
the region, helpful information that
has never before been collated. In
2015, Elizabeth Schuster, environmental economist with The Nature
Conservancy in New Jersey, completed a study of about 600 visitors
to Bayshore sites in Cumberland
County over three seasons, and it
yielded some interesting results.
One assumption is that firsttime visitors to the Bayshore will
see how rural it is and never come

that rebuilt the roof and lantern room. In

1980 the U.S. Coast Guard reinstalled the
beacon and today it is an active navigational
aid as well as the only functional lighthouse
on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Bay.
It is currently owned by the NJ Division of
Fish, Game and Wildlife and is on the
National Historic Register.
Long in need of repairs, the renovation
will include replacing the roof, installing a
new barrier-free ramp, renovating the entire
interior, and brick pointing the exterior face
of the lighthouse.
County Freeholder Deputy Director
Darlene Barber noted that these types of
shared services were what the freeholders
envisioned with CCIA taking on economic

back, she says, but 99 percent of

those surveyed responded that they
would return to the Bayshore.
About 50 percent visit the Bayshore
five to 10 or 10 or more times per
year.
Another theory is that visitors do
not support the local economy by
purchasing meals from local restaurants. In fact, more than half of
respondents reported buying food
during their stay.
The top three reasons that
respondents stated for visiting the
Bayshore are wildlife viewing, outdoor recreation and special events
or festivals. Historic and cultural
activities also rated highly, indicating that maintaining both the
regions cultural and natural integrity is critical. Concerns that the area
lacks a compelling flagship species
to attract wildlife-motivated visitors
were put to rest by the survey.
Bald eagles, which are now
flourishing in the Bayshore after
years of decline, are a top draw,
says Schuster. Many visitors indicated they would go out of their way
to see one.
Nature-based tourism is a win-win
for visitors and for Cumberland
County. People who fall in love with
the natural and cultural treasures of
the Bayshore will support the local
economy and enable protected areas
to stay protectedbenefitting nature,
wildlife and residents, too. Then, if
anyone says that the region makes
New Jersey have too much nature,
it will be the highest compliment.

New Jersey, tourism brought in an excess of

$321 millions of dollars to Cumberland
County in 2014.
Construction is expected to begin in June
and to be completed by the end of the year.
While the building is under construction, the
lighthouse grounds will remain open during
that time and for significant events, including
the annual state-wide Lighthouse Challenge
weekend in October. For more information
on events, contact Nancy Patterson at 609501-6345.
The addition of this construction project,
along with the construction, acquisition and
renovation of the other facilities, brings the
CCIAs construction management total to
more than $120 million. For more informa-

development and construction project management for the County. CCIA Board
President Robert Nedohon, reflected, Its
very gratifying to see the Improvement
Authoritys full breadth of expertise and
resources benefitting the County and its residents and partnering with non-profit and
private sector.
CCIA Executive Director Gerard
Velazquez said, Tourism is an economic
driver for the county. The Cumberland
County Improvement Authority saw an
opportunity for us to meet a need that
addresses tourism and economic growth in
our Bayshore area and the County.

New Rotary Group Forms, Inducts First Members

The Tri-County Community Rotary Group, the first of its kind in District 7640,
was formed to enable more business professionals to provide service to people
in need. On April 19, the new Rotary Group became official as District Governor
David Zelley, assisted by other District leadership, inducted its first 23 members,
and welcomed three transferring Rotarians, and six new members of the South
Jersey Rotary E-Club.
The Tri-County Community Rotary Group is an extension of the South Jersey
Rotary E-Club and meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at
Merighis Savoy Inn in Vineland, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. This club represents a
more flexible approach to the traditional Rotary Club meeting, said Zelley.
While it meets fewer times each month, there is also an online meeting opportunity. At the end of the day, it shares the same desire of Rotarians everywhere,
which is to engage more people in service. I applaud this group for its forward
thinking and dedication to doing whatever is needed to help others.
The new group serves Atlantic, Cumberland and Gloucester counties and has
already joined forces with a number of local organizations to provide support. As
part of the South Jersey Rotary E-Club, it also co-sponsors at Buena Regional High
School Interact Club, and the Tri County Community Interact Club at the YMCA.
We work very hard to provide our members with the flexibility they need to
become and stay active in Rotary, said Mary Crawford, president of the South
Jersey Rotary E-Club. The Tri County Community Rotary Group is a blend of the
traditional and virtual club models. It is a more natural Tri-County Community
extension of our efforts and we could not be more pleased with our successful
launch. Our club members have already begun participating in service project to
support our communities.
Rotary International is comprised of 1.2 million neighbors, friends and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in communities around the world. To find out more, visit www.rotary.org.
For more information on how you can join the Tri-County Community Rotary
GroupSouth Jersey Rotary E-Club, contact Tina Ritondaro, chair, at

s you read this, Ill be away in

Milwaukee at the National
Main Streets Conference, along
with Main Street Vineland
Assistant Director Robin Barbetti and
Business Development Director Robert
Scarpa. However, I do want to fill you in
on some events that are coming up fast
and thick.
Coming up this week is our next
Fourth Friday event on May 27. Im really excited about this because it is the start
of a five-month fitness and film themed
Fourth Friday event partnershipMay
through September with the Vineland
Health Department. This series, however,
will be a part of a variety of events being
planned for each Fourth Friday.
Like the other Fitness and Film events
in the series, they will take place at the
mini-park at the southwest corner of
Landis Avenue and the Boulevard, in
Vineland. The rain location for the exercise and movie will be inside Landis
MarketPlace, 631 Landis Avenue,
Vineland.
Start off from 6 to 7 p.m. with fitness
activities for kids; then shop and dine on
the Avenue from 7 to 8:30 p.m., as merchants will be open late that evening.
Round out the evening at 8:30 p.m., back
at the mini-park, as children and adults
alike will delight in a showing of the
award-winning film Minionsstarring
Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, and Michael
Keatonabout three minions who are
recruited by a super-villain and her inventor to take over the world. Please bring a
chair and/or blanket for the fitness program and the movie. Parents must remain
with their children.
You can also satisfy your karaoke passion at Friends and Family Diner, 601 E.
Landis Avenue, at their karaoke night.
This full-filled night of entertainment, is
held outdoors every Fourth Friday from 7
to 10 p.m., weather permitting, and will
feature hot dogs and hamburgers on an
outdoor grill, as well as soft drinks. In
case of inclement weather, it will be held
indoors.
Coming up the following week is our

next Downtown Merchants Meet-andGreet on Thursday, June 2, from 5:30 to 7

p.m., at Members 1st Federal Credit
Union, 37 W. Landis Avenue. Were doing
these Meet-and-Greets every other month
and theyve been getting bigger and bigger
each time as the word gets out among the
downtown merchants. Theyre discovering that these events are a great place to
get to know one another, to network, and
to come away not only knowing about
their fellow businesses, but about what we
in Main Street Vineland are doing for
them and can offer them.
Its also a key opportunity for them to
communicate backto share with us their
concerns and something about what
theyre doing. Refreshments will be served
and wed like to know how many are coming, so RSVP via the Main Street Vineland
office at 856-794-8653 or by e-mailing
mainstreet@vinelandcity.org no later than
Tuesday, May 31.
In between those two events, dont forget to come out to the Memorial Day
events downtown on Monday, May 31
first, the parade on Landis Avenue, to start
at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church at
Myrtle Street and heading to the Sailors
Monument at the northeast mini-park at
the Boulevard. This, as always, will be followed by a ceremony at Landis Park.
Kudos to the United Veterans Council and
the City of Vineland for keeping this noble
and honorable tradition alive.
Watch out in a future column for news
about Cruise Down Memory Lane, coming
to Landis Avenue on June 11.
***
Make downtown Vineland your destination for your shopping needs, as well as
for fun all year round. Save money on
gasoline, avoid the long lines at the bigbox stores, malls, and shopping centers
and also enjoy the events we have in
town. I

Heres a dessert treat that will satisfy anyone who

loves strawberries and rhubarb.
Once again, that forced march to
Atlantic City is looming over me like a
black cloud! My sister Linda still has her
wits about her, so I cant expect her to forget anythingand believe me, she doesnt.
She still brings up that Midge doll of hers
that I scalped when I was six years old,
the time I played Lone Ranger when I was
eight and hit her over the head with the
toy gun and the stitches she had to get,
and of course there was that indelible coffee stain I got on her purple shirt I when I
was 17. Geez, no chance of her forgetting
anything!
Linda loves hot and spicy food, so I
plan on taking her to this new restaurant I
foundMichelles Kitchen on Landis
Avenue in Vineland. It is Jamaican cooking at its finest.
So far, I have had the Jerk Chicken, the
Oxtail, the Brown Stew Pork, the Brown
Stew Chicken and my favorite, the Whole
Fish Red Snapper! I got the fish with
white rice and her fabulous cabbage. The
best of all is her cornbread, fragrant and
full of rich spices, moist and tender!
Michelle also has four- or five-layer
cakes that she bakes every week and the
carrot cake is divine! I know that if I take
Linda here, I will have to tell Michelle to
spice up her meal, since my sister has a
love of hot and spicy food. I made CLiff
spice up my Brown Pork Stew and I just
about died! I hiccuped after every bite, but
it was worth it!
You definitely have to cool off your
mouth after these wonderfully spiced
dishes, and here is a little treat that I
know my sister will love because it combines two of her favorite things, strawberries and rhubarb. It is very easy to make
and you can make it will all kinds of fruit,
so keep it in mind for the rest of summers
bounty!

Strawberry Rhubarb Panna Cotta

1 1/2 tsp. unflavored gelatin
1 pound strawberries, trimmed and
quartered
4 stalks rhubarb, thinly sliced (no
leavesthey are poisonous)
1/4 tsp. finely minced fresh ginger
1/2 cup sugar

1 1/2 cups heavy cream

1 tsp. lemon juice
Sliced strawberries, blueberries or
raspberries, for serving

Fill a small bowl with 2 tablespoons of

cold water. Sprinkle the gelatin over top
and let stand for 5 minutes.
In a small saucepan, combine the
strawberries, rhubarb, ginger and sugar
and cook over medium heat, pressing the
fruit with the back of a spoon and stirring
frequently, until it has broken down and
the juices are syrupy, about 10 minutes.
Using an immersion blender, blend the
fruit until smooth. (If you do not have an
immersion blender, wait for the mixture
to cool, then transfer it to a blender and
puree.)
Bring the berry puree back to a low
simmer, add the gelatin mixture, and stir
until completely dissolved. Remove from
heat. Add the cream and lemon juice and
stir to combine. Divide mixture evenly
among six 4-oz. ramekins and cover with
plastic wrap. Chill until firm, at least 4
hours or overnight.
Top with fresh berries and serve. I

Awarded Clean Communities
Grants

The DEP is awarding more than $21.1

million to eligible municipalities, and an
additional $2.6 million to all 21 counties.
Clean Communities grants to municipalities and counties in 2015 totaled $20.8 million. Simple initiatives such as litter control go a long way to making our communities healthier, stronger, and more sustainable, said Mark Pedersen, assistant
commissioner for Site Remediation and
Waste Management. This years increase
in Clean Communities grants will allow
New Jersey to continue fostering environmental stewardship at the local level as
means to a more sustainable future."
As established by law, the nonprofit
New Jersey Clean Communities Council
oversees the reporting requirements for
the program. Grants are funded by a legislated user-fee on manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors that produce littergenerating products. Disbursements to
municipalities are based on the number of
housing units and miles of municipally
owned roadways within each municipality.
Municipalities receiving the largest
grants include Vineland (Cumberland
County) $152,185; Camden (Camden
County) $145,152; and Gloucester
Township (Camden County) $143,342.
The counties receiving the largest grant
awards are: Ocean, $244,853, Cumberland,
$213,520, Burlington, $199,728, Bergen,
$174,015 and Gloucester, $160,944.
Litter comes from a variety of sources,
such as pedestrians, motorists, overflow-

ing household garbage, construction sites

and uncovered trucks. Litter is often
blown by the wind until it is trapped
somewhere, such as along a fence, or in a
ditch or gully. People tend to litter when
an area is already littered, and when they
lack a sense of ownership or pride in
their community. In addition to being
unsightly, litter is unhealthy and may create a negative public image. Activities
funded by Clean Communities grants
include cleanups of stormwater systems
that can disperse trash into streams,
rivers and bays; volunteer cleanups of
public properties; adoption and enforcement of local anti-littering ordinances;
beach cleanups; public information and
education programs; and purchases of litter collection equipment such as receptacles, recycling bins, anti-litter signs and
graffiti removal supplies.

county grant awards, visit njclean.org
