1.Purpose:
The purpose of this procedure is for supervision of all excavation works & to ensure that
the proper quality control is exercised at site.
2. Scope:
This Procedure covers the work method, supervision & method of record keeping for all
excavation works in foundations & trenches in stations.
2. Reference:
Tender specification no. PL/E&C/CONTR/CIVIL/SSPL/ML/2002-03/20 Volume II of IV.
AFC Drawings.
3.Equipment :
Excavator, JCB, Manual excavations tools, Dewatering Pump - as per site requirement.
4. Method
4.1 Prepatory works:4.1.1
Before taking up any work,spot levels with pre determined grids are to be jointl

4.1.2 Traverse survey pillars and intermediate grid pillars will be errected with
reference to co-ordinates from the existing reference pillars checked by IOCL.
In case under ground live cables/ pipes/ drains are crossing the excavation

Area of construction shall be cleared of all materials including


bushes,trees,vegetation,obstruction and rubbish disposed off to a suitable
place as per the provision of contract & instructions of IOCL.
4.3 Excavation(soft/loose/hard/dense soil & mud):Excavation for foundations and other sub structures shall be done as per
4.3.1 drawing with sufficient working space working space all around as per site
requirement.

Suitable shoring & strutting shall be adopted where ever required to withhold
the face of earth or cutting shall be done in slope as per site requirements and
instruction of IOCL.

Excavation shall be carried out upto the required formation level as specified
in the " IFC " drawing maintaining line and dimension.

If the excavation has gone deeper than the required level, it shall be brought
back to the required level by sand filling or PCC as per the instructions of
IOCL.
If earth work involves mass excavation,the same will be carried out in a well p

4.4 Excavation (soft/disintegrated/weathered rock):If loose rock is met with in excavation, it shall be removed with rock breaker/other suitable tools.
Excavation for foundations and other sub-structures shall be done as per
drawing with sufficient working space as per site requirement.
The sides of excavation may be cut in suitable slope to hold the face of earth.

Excavation shall be carried out upto the required formation level as specified
in IFC drawing maintaining the line & dimension.

4.4.5

If the excavation has gone deeper than the required level, it shall be brought
to the level in the manner described in Cl. 3.3.4 of this procedure.
If earth work involves mass excavation,the same will be carried out in a well p

Surplus earth and soil from excavation shall be removed from construction
site to suitable area as per the provision of contract & instruction of IOCL.
4.5 Excavation(hard rock):4.4.1
If hard rock is met with in excavation, it shall be removed with rock breaker/other suitable tools.

If the excavation is in the hard rock which requires blasting operations
approval of the Engineer-in-charge shall be obtained.

Licence shall be obtained from the Competent Authorities for storing the
explosive & blasting operations as per explosives latest prevailing Acts/Rules.

All blasting materials such as explosive, fuses, detonators etc. shall be


procured from a licensed dealer. All items shall be kept separately in safe
custody. EIC can check the store of explosives and its account any time he
desires.

All required safety measures shall be taken to avoid any accident to workmen,
public or property damage due to blasting operations.

4.5.7

If the excavation has gone deeper than the required level, it shall be brought
to the level in the manner described in Cl. 3.3.4 of this procedure.

4.5.8

Excavated rock shall be removed from construction site to suitable area as


per the provision of contract & instruction of IOCL.

description The contract specification shall be refered. In case of any dispute
between this procedure and contract specification, the later shall prevail.
