Summer Block Party

Outreach:
Begins next Thursday, June 2nd and runs
every Thursday in June and July on
the front lawn and side parking lot of
ESUMC, beginning at 6:00 pm. Our goal
is to reach out and meet our neighbors in
this community through food and fellowship, all in the name of
Jesus Christ.
If you are interested in supporting this outreach ministry, we
need cases of water and soda, bags of chips/pretzels/etc. and
monetary donations for hamburgers and hot dogs. If you are
writing a check to support this ministry just write Summer Block
Party on the memo line and drop it in the offering plate on
Sunday morning.
Thank you for your support!!

Pastors Corner
Its hard to believe that already it is time for our summer Block Parties to begin again! This
was something we tried last summer for the first time, and it was such a success, we
knew we wanted to do it again. So starting this Thursday and for the next eight
Thursdays, well gather in the front of the church property and offer radical hospitality to
all who come our way. We greet everyone as friends, not strangers, and we extend the
love of Jesus Christ to all, because Jesus first loved us.
We have some exciting new changes for this years series of Block Parties. First, were
moving the time slightly earlier to start at 6:00 pm, not 6:30 pm. Second, well cut down a little on the total
time but still allow plenty of time for fellowship around the tables in the parking lot. Third, the reason were
cutting down slightly on the time outside is to allow for time inside. Specifically, a time to worship in our
Sanctuary. We aim to make this a brief but uplifting time of worship, praise, testimony, and brief preaching.
It will be relentlessly upbeat, and will serve to introduce the concept of worship to those who have never
experienced it or who have not been in worship in a long time. Of course, any of our members and
longtime friends are welcome, too. Worship begins at 7:30 pm, and will end no later than 8:00 pm and
probably a little earlier.
Preaching this summer will have a fun element to it, and I want to take a moment to tell you about it.
Movies and television (not to mention all forms of entertainment) have a profound influence in our lives.
The images and narratives we see influence our identity, spirituality, and the values that guide our decision
making. This can be both positive and negative, depending on our point of view, maturity, and choices.
(Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1)

Because of the influence of the visual arts in our world, on Sunday, June
26, I will begin a sermon series called, Jesus goes to Hollywood. Each
week, I will use a film to illustrate a biblical truth. Let me be quick to say
that the film will not be in place of Scripture or even the main part of the
sermon, but will be used for illustration purposes only.
Heres the kicker: this is an interactive sermon series. I want all of you to
be involved and to help me put the sermon together. The way it will work
is that on the Sunday evening prior to the sermon in which I mention a
particular movie, we will show the movie in Oberholtzer Hall. Depending
on the length of the movie, there may be time for brief discussion after
each film. Participants will be invited to go home and think about the
important themes (both positive and negative) they observed in the film.
They will then be encouraged to email me during the week with
observations and parts of the movie which they believe are worth
mentioning in my sermon the following Sunday. In this way, we will work
on the message together.
You may not be a movie lover, and I understand that. I promise to not be
overbearing with film references in the sermons. However, I believe the
stories we see in movies and TV present life dilemmas and cause us to
think and ponder how we might respond in similar circumstances. When
we ponder from a faith point of view with a biblical understanding
together with faithful Christian friends with whom to share ideas, we can
come to new understandings about God.
Our first film, in honor of Fathers Day, will be Field of Dreams, starring
Kevin Costner. It will be shown on Fathers Day evening, and then the
sermon using material from the film will be given on June 26. I want you
to suggest other movies we can use this summer, and please invite
friends!

Read the Bible in a Year

As we finish reading the four Gospels, I want to

share a thought that strikes me. I believe all are
important, but the Gospel of John presents a
unique focus. It is here that we get a different view
of Jesus life and His ministry. In Matthew, Mark and Luke we learn so
much about what it means to follow Jesus; but John stresses the
importance of the relationship with Jesus that is critical to our faith.
Case in point: The word and concept of God as father is mentioned 42
times in in the first three Gospels. In John it is spoken over a 100 times.
And I love the way John starts the gospel, beginning all the way back to
Genesis where God speaks and creation happens. He shows us that
God is the source and the reason behind everything that exists; then he
connects the dots linking Jesus to the beginning words of the creation
story. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God (John 1:1).
So the central theme of Johns Gospel is that God has come in human
form, to reveal himself to us. This is the truth that sets Christianity apart
from nearly every other religion: that God came to us in the person of
Jesus Christ, to redeem us by His saving grace.
And I believe this means that when we look at Jesus, who is the
perfect revelation of God, we can see the heart and the character of God.
This is the way we come to know who God is and what God is all about.
So my friends be encouraged and read on!

Stephen Ministry

Wholeness in Christ!

The Stephen Ministry logo

consists of a cross and a circle,
together with a broken person and a
whole person. The broken person
stands behind the cross symbolizing
the brokenness in our lives as a result
of our sin. The whole person stands
in front of the cross because it is
through the cross of Jesus that we are
made whole. The circle symbolizes
both the wholeness we receive
through Christ and Gods unending
love for us.
