Lesson Aims:
* creating interest in the topic of the lesson;
* allowing Ss to express ideas freely in the topic;
* raising expectations and creating involvement in a reading task and reading for gist;
* raising expectations and creating involvement in a listening task and listening for gist;
* fostering fluency.
Activity 1. Warming up
Aim: T to check if Ss have done their homework correctly.
Procedure:
T ST; 5 min
* T asks Ss to read their paragraph about a favourite school teacher (Anecdote/110).
Activity 2. Lexis. Matching
Aim: practising using collocations about school life.
Procedure:
PW; 5 min
* T asks Ss to match the two halves of the expressions to make some questions about
education (Ex. 1/111);
* Ss work in pairs to form questions;
* T checks answers.
Activity 3. Asking and answering questions
Aim: developing speaking skills.
Procedure:
* Ss ask each other the questions in 1, working in pairs;
* T helps when necessary.
Activity 4. Reading stories of people who proved their teachers were wrong

Aim: developing reading skills.


Procedure:
IW, PW; 18 min
* T goes through the questions with the class before they read the text;
* Ss read more stories of people who proved their teachers were wrong, silently, then
answer the questions (Ex. 3/111);
* T directs Ss attention to the expressions in bold in 1 and asks them to read the text
again and find which 2 are not used (Ex. 4/111);
* Scanning. Ss scan the texts to find matching expressions, working in pairs (Ex. 5/112);
* T goes through the predictions one by one with the class asking Ss to complete them
and then discuss whether they will happen in their country and, if so, when. Ss work in
pairs 9Ex. 6/112);
* T helps when necessary.
Activity 5. Listening
Aim: developing listening and speaking skills.
Procedure:
PW; 7 min
* Working in groups, Ss discuss the questions. T sees if there is agreement across the
class about the ages in a (Ex. 1/112);
* Before Ss listen to the recording, T asks them to read the information about the
education system in Britain on the worksheets. T reads the summary sentences with the
class before she plays the recording. Ss listen to Mr. and Mrs. Barrington talking about
their daughter Saffron. T asks Ss to decide which of the sentences best summarises their
feelings about Saffrons future plans (Ex. 2/112);
* T reads the expressions in the box with the class then plays the recording again. Ss put
the correct phrases in the sentences completing the worksheets (Ex. 3/112);
* Pairwork. Ss discuss the statements and say what they think their parents opinions
would be.
Activity 6. Homework.
Aim: developing Ss skills in writing a paragraph.
Procedure:
T ST; 2 min
*T asks Ss to write a paragraph making at least three predictions about the future of
education in their country, giving arguments.

Here are some facts about the education system in Britain:


The school leaving age in Britain is 16. At this age students can leave to get a job. Most
take exams called GCSEs first. However, many students stay on after their GCSEs, either
at school or at a sixth form college, for a further two years and specialize in three, or
sometimes four, subjects. At the end of the two years they take A-level (Advanced level)
exams. If they get good enough grades in their A-levels, they can go on to university.

Ex. 2/112 Listen to Mr and Mrs Barrington talking about their eighteen-year-old
daughter, Saffron. Decide which of the following sentences best summarises their
feelings about Saffrons future.
