1. Physics Question: This question is about a falling stone.

The speed time graph shows the motion of a stone dropped from the side of the cliff. The graph shows
the speed from when the stone was released, until immediately before impact.

a) Determine the speed after a time of 3.5 s. Show this point on the graph.

d) If the cliff was significantly higher (so the stone would fall for a very long time) the shape of the
speed time curve would differ.
i.

Sketch the shape of the expected speed time curve on the axes below.

2. Physics Question: This question is about the motion of a toy car.

The distance time graph indicates that the toy car travels at a constant velocity before slowing down and
coming to rest.

m

a) Calculate the velocity the speed of the car in the first 8 s of its motion.

3. Physics Question: Circular Motion.

A mass is swung in a circle horizontally as shown below. The ball steadily completes 1 revolution each
second. It is swung in a clockwise direction.

a) Mateus says that the ball is travelling at a constant speed. Jim says that Mateus is wrong.
Explain why Jim is correct.

b) Consider the event of the string breaking. The ball will continue to move. Circle the correct answer
showing the direction of the path it will travel.

4. Experimental Methodology.
An experiment is going to be conducted where a simple pendulum (mass suspended from a string) is
pulled to one side and released. The experimenter wishes to investigate how the length of the string
affects the time taken for one back and forth motion (which is called the Period).

ii.

iv.
v.

Apparatus is assembled with the first desired length

The mass is held to the side and released
The time taken for ten (10) periods is recorded with a stop watch
The Period time is determined from the measurement
The experiment is repeated an appropriate number of times

a) The experimenter wishes to use 5 values of length in the experiment. State a range of feasible values
and the increment between them which are suitable for a lab / classroom set up.

and then determined the period from this.
