Piano Plus
Piano Plus, a concert performed by students from Yong Siew Toh
Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) was held in YSTCM concert hall on
Tuesday, 13 November 2013 at 7.30 p.m. From the title of the concert,
people may guess that most of the pieces that were performed by the
students

instrument(s). In this concert, Students performed works of art that were

composed by the renowned composers throughout the history of music.
These composers are Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Haydn, Poulenc,
Menotti, Ravel and Reinecke. Beethoven Piano Trio No. 1 in E-flat major,
Op. 1 made me excited to attend the concert. I expected that the students
from YSTCM could excite the emotion of the piece by their playing so that
the audience could feel the beauty of the sound expressed from the piece.
So glad that YSTCM concert hall has a magnificent acoustic environment
which improves the concert experience.

The Piano Trio No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op 1 has four movements: Allegro,
Adagio cantabile (A flat major), Scherzo: Allegro assai (E flat major, with a
trio in A flat major) and Finale: Presto. In this concert, only the first
movement were performed by the YSTCM students. The first movement
has a tuneful, and clear melody which is similar to the characteristic of the
classical music in general. The first movements dynamic range from
pianissimo to fortissimo. The dynamic gradually change throughout the
movement and sometimes it changes in sudden which creates a contrast

of mood. Listening to the piano playing arpeggios and Alberti bass on the
left hand alternately in each phrase, one may say that the piece has a
flexibility in rhythm which is the characteristic of the music in the classical
period. The cheerful and joyous recurring theme makes the movement
easy to remember (the themes melody was playing in my head when I
wrote this report). I could say that it is worth to spend your time listening
to this piece because, for me, it could refresh your mood instantly.

Before attended the concert, I had thought that students could not
perform as high quality as the professionals in terms of techniques and
expression. After the concert has ended, I knew that I was wrong. It was
an astonishing performance, it was as high quality as the professionals
and I would like to watch them play again. I learned that, whether a music
played by the professional or students, the music will sound awesome as
long as it is played by people who have passion and strong believe in the
music. As a conclusion, I was glad I had attended the performance.
