Thisspreadsheetprovidesaneasyandsimpleapproachto(2/3phaseandvertical/horizontal)separatorsizing.
Formulaeandreferencesarealsoprovidedforprocessengineerstoedit/duplicatethiswork(fileisNOT
passwordprotected).
Thereisasmuchartasthereissciencetoproperlydesignaseparator.Threemainfactorsshouldbe
consideredinseparatorsizing:1)
vaporcapacity,2)Liquidcapacity,and3)operability.The
vaporcapacitywilldeterminethecrosssectionalareanecessaryforgravitationalforcestoremovetheliquid
fromthevapor.Theliquidcapacityis
typicallysetbydeterminingthevolumerequiredtoprovideadequateresidencetimetodegastheliquidor
allowimmiscibleliquidphasestoseparate.Operabilityissuesincludetheseparatorsabilitytodeal
withsolidsifpresent,unsteadyflow/liquidslugs,turndown,etc.Finally,theoptimaldesignwillusuallyresultin
anaspectratiothatsatisfiestheserequirementsinavesselofreasonablecost.Thesefactorsoftenresultinan
iterativeapproachtothecalculations.
