If Tombstones Could Talk... Cemetery Walk

Offered June 5 at Maple Hill Cemetery
The 6th annual cemetery walk, "If Tombstones Could Talk..." will take place Sunday, June 5, from 5-7 p.m.
(rain date is Sunday, June 12, 5-7 p.m.). The walk will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery, located on S. Hyatt
St. in Tipp City.
Catherine Bohlender Kessler will be portrayed by her granddaughter, Kay Kessler Vaughn. Catherine was a
beloved Tipp City librarian who raised five sons on her own. Jackie Wells Wahl and great-grandson Phillip Wells
will narrate the Ora Wells family story dating back to pioneer days. Garwood Faunce will give a history of the
I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges. Scott and Elaine Hoover will portray "Harve" Wilson and his daughter, Helen
Dodds. He was involved in real estate and community organizations and she was a Tippecanoe High School
English teacher. Great-granddaughter Karol Kerr McCarthy will portray Esther "Etta" Tenney Kerr, wife of Ellis
Hamilton Kerr. The Kerr family was known by their many land holdings and Miami Co. attorneys.
This event is sponsored by the Tippecanoe Historical Society. All ages are encouraged to stroll from site to
site to hear the interesting stories of people from the past who called Tippecanoe/Tipp City their home. Take time
to check out the very unusual stones, many of which tell their own stories. Explain to your families the special
markers and the sacrifice and service they represent. Talk to them about the many people you remember through
school and community associations.
If its too difficult for you to navigate the cemetery grounds you are welcome to drive from site to site. The
Township Trustees do ask that you park in such a way that you dont block the drive as there might be those who
are there to visit a particular site and not take part in the cemetery walk. The Society appreciates the work done
by the cemetery staff to prepare the cemetery for this activity. There will be people from the Society at the
entrances to provide maps of the walk.
For further information, call Gordon at 667-3051 or Susie at 698-6798.

Anyone interested in genealogy or historical research will appreciate

the newest addition at the Milton-Union Public Library a ScanPro
1100 microfilm scanner from World Micrographics. The acquisition
of this new equipment is made possible by grants from the Miami
County Foundation and the Ohio History Connection and replaces
the librarys defunct microfilm reader.
The new scanner is brighter, lighter, and comes with extras like
optical zoom lens 7-54X magnification, SuperSpeed interface, and
printing capabilities. Library
staff will be available to walk
patrons through many of the
additional features on the scanner.
The library was one of only 14
recipients out of 63 applicants
for
the
Ohio
History
Connections History Fund and
the only library. The History
Fund is a competitive matching
grant program administered by
the Ohio History Connections
Local History Services department. Ninety-nine percent of the
fund comes through the tax
check-off when Ohioans
donate a portion of the state
income tax refund to the Ohio
History Fund using their state tax
return. The remaining one percent is funded by Ohio History
mastodon license sales and
through direct donations.
The History Fund grant covered $3,000 of the reader, computer, and stand. The remaining
$4,035 was provided by the
Miami County Foundation
(MCF) through a grant request
by the New Friends of the
Milton-Union Public Library.
MCFs mission statement is
People Helping People, and
refers to itself as a savings
account for the community,
where the funds raised are
invested within the county and
the income is used to meet the
current and future needs of the
community.
The library appreciates the
support from the New Friends of
the Milton-Union Public Library,
the Miami County Foundation,
and
the
Ohio
History
Connection.
The library is located at 560
S. Main St., West Milton, and is
open Monday thru Thursday 10
a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and
Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Valley Echoes

Outdoor Movie Night

Scheduled June 10
At P-Hill Library

by Gary Godfrey

Times Are Changing

Bradford High School held its annual Alumni Banquet on Saturday, May 21st, in the
high schools auditorium. I was asked to serve as the master of ceremonies.
Honored at the reunion were members of the classes that graduated 50, 25, and 10 years
ago. Each of those in attendance was presented with a certificate and lapel pin.
As I announced the recipients, the 50-year class had 25 students in attendance. There are
eight deceased out of their class of 33. That was indeed a great turn out for their
reunion.
The 25-year class had approximately 12 graduates in attendance. The 10-year class had
just four attending.

Join us for our kick-off to

summer with the awesome
movie, Kung Fu Panda 3 at
the Oakes-Beitman Memorial
Library on Friday, June 10.
This film is rated PG and runs
for one hour and 35 minutes.
The movie will begin at
sunset (approximately 9 p.m.)
in the library parking lot, 12 N.
Main St. Bring lawn chairs or
blankets.
In case of rain, the movie
will be shown in the Newton
School junior high gym.

I commented after the event that unless we find a way to get the younger generations
involved, our alumni would soon die.
Just so you know, the following are the names of generations since 1900:
GI Generations 1900-1926
Mature/Silent 1927-1945
Baby Boomers 1946-1964
Generation X 1965-1980
Generation Y/Millennium 1981-2000
Generation Z/Boomlets Born after 2001
Ive come to the conclusion that the older we get, the more we realize what is important
and what is not. A reunion of classmates after 50 years is more important than sitting at
home in front of the television.
Its really fun to remember the good old days when we were wild and mischievous and
to talk to classmates we havent seen since the day we graduated.
In 2006 there were a record number of births in the US and 49% of those born were
Hispanic. This will change the American melting pot in terms of behavior and culture.
The number of births in 2006 far outnumbered the start of the baby boomer generation,
and they will easily be a larger generation.
Since the early 1700s the most common last name in the US was Smith but not anymore, now it is Rodriguez.
I think you now get the picture.
With the advent of computers and web based learning, children leave behind toys at a
younger and younger age. Its called KGOY-kids growing older younger, and many
companies have suffered because of it.
Most recognizable is Mattel, the maker of Barbie dolls. In the 1990s, the average age
of a child in their target market was 10 years old, and in 2000 it dropped to 3 years old.
As children reach the age of four and five (old enough to play on the computer), they
become less interested in toys and begin to desire electronics such as cell phones and
video games.
I also think youll agree that we now live in a society with everyone living their lives
with their heads down.
This weeks bottom line: If we can find a way to abolish the cell phone, we just might
save our country. Even though I carry one, I would be first in line to mandate its
destruction. Im also sure that Apple wouldnt go along with this idea . . .
In fiscal year 2011, Apple sold 72 million phones.
