The Little Emperors

Traditionally, Chinese families had lots of children. Everyone
looked up to and obeyed the father. But Chinese family have changed.
In 1979, the Chisene government took a decision which had a big
impact on society. It was a time when tyhe government was worried
about the population increase. Now Chinese families cant have more
than one child. Most of the teenagers in the big cities are only children.
Teenagers who have no brothers or sisters can feel lonely. If
tou feel annoyed with your friends, you cant fall out with them
because nobody else to talk to at home, says one girl. I broke up with
my boyfriend, but I had nobody to go with, so we made made up
again. In many cities there are few sports centers or places where
teenagers can get together. Boys spend the evening in internet cafes,
instead of socialising. The cafes have broadband connections which are
fast and cheap, and addiction to online gaming is a problem.
On the other hand, many Chinese teenagers say they feel
independent and self-confident. They dont let other people, including
their parents, take decisions for them. Only children get lots of
attention from their parents and their grandparents. Each child has six
adults looking after them! They get the best food and clothes. Most of

them go to extra classes after scholl. Parents who have only one child
usually have more money to spend on these things. The education and
success are important in Chinese society. In fact, these only children
are called little emperors because now, in Chinese families, they are
the people who everybody must obey and respect.

Dear Aldi,
How are you? I miss you. It has been a year since you moved to
Medan. You know, I have a new hobby, going to the cinema.
Whenever I have spare time, I go. I have already watched twenty films.
I watch all kinds of films drama, horror and crime.

One night, after a movies, I left the cinema hurriedly. My watched

showed 11:30 p.m as I got to my bicycle. I pedalled hard and sped
home. My thoughts returned to one scenes that I had just seen. It was a
very scary movie. I could clearly remember a woman screaming, as she
was being attacked by a monster. That frightful scene stayed on my
mind.
I think thats all for now. Write to me soon, okay.
