BREAD AND SCRIPTURE

1 Corinthians 10:17
"Because there is one bread, we who are many are
one body, for we all partake of the one bread."

"One bread, one body" is a common saying throughout

the Catholic Church. We can connect the bread to the
church as a whole. We are all connected and support
one another as the bread is one body.

WINE
Represents the blood of
Christ
Significant meaning of the
Old Covenant
Sharing of joyful
anticipation of the coming
of Christ in Jerusalem

WINE IN THE SCRIPTURE

1 Timothy 5:23
"Drink no longer water but use a little wine for the
stomachs sake and thine often infirmities."
This verse shows how wine, or the blood of Christ,
acts as a cleanse of our body and soul. When we
drink the blood of Christ we are washing away our
sins and cleaning ourselves of our iniquities.

OIL
Oil is the seal of the Holy
Spirit
Oil is a symbol of being
accepted, inducted, brought
into something
Oil is a sign of healing ,
strengthening, and the
presence of the Holy Spirit

OIL IN SCRIPTURE
Luke 10:34
"He approached the victim, poured oil and wine
over his wounds and bandaged them

Oil of the sick: blessed olive oil used in

the Sacrament of Anointing the Sick to
anoint the forehead and hands of people
who are seriously ill or near death.

FIRE
Represents the Holy Spirit, the light of
Christ
Symbol of prayer
Light also represents the direction and
guidance of God. Psalm 119:105 says,
"God's Word is a lamp to the feet and a
light to our path."
Another example: 2 Samuel 22 says," the
Lord is a lamp, turning darkness into light."
Remembrance of the dead and how their
soul lives on thru the light

FIRE IN THE SCRIPTURE

Exodus 3:2
The angel of the Lord appeared to him in the blazing fire
from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the
bush was burning like fire, yet the bush was not consumed.
Fire and flames are a very important symbol in the Catholic faith.
Many times, angels and the Holy Spirit appeared to us on earth
by some form of flames or fire. The candles in the church are also
important. There is always a flame burning at the tabernacle with
the holy Eucharist resting inside it. The candles carried by the
altar servers also symbolize the flame of the Holy Spirit.
